Winds of Destiny(P26)
The turbulent ocean waters and gale force winds continued to toss Obsession around like a toy boat well into the next day. Lightening danced in the dark gray clouds all around them as heavy rain mixed with the sea water. The yacht’s powerful 2 main engines strained to climb twelve to sixteen foot waves that pounded the sides or washed over the deck, soaking the occupants that braved the weather to keep the yacht from capsizing and sinking in the violent storm.
Sav had finally wondered on deck against Joe’s protest, in hopes of the harsh weather to calm his stomach and aching head. He now gripped the railing on the stern for dear life, not wanting to be thrown overboard in the cold water. The bow dipped deep in the water, then sprang back up as it reached the bottom of the wave, only to roll over the next one. Sav hunched his shoulder as water splashed over him, even under the bright yellow rain slicker that he wore, his clothes were soaked. He quickly reached up to push his wet hair from his face.
Nick glanced at him from his place at the wheel and shouted above the noise of the storm. “Richard go down below, you’re looking a litt…!”
“It’s not any better down there!” Sav grumbled loudly, staring daggers at him. “Just let me get off this boat!”
“For the hundredth time Richard, this is a yacht, not a boat!”
“Same damn thing, you put it in the water, it floats…a boat. A yacht doesn’t have sails Nick!” Sav yelled, then screwed his face up as the churning in his stomach grew worse. He flipped around to hang over the side and stayed there.
Joe scurried back on deck, bracing himself from the winds and rain, a bottle of blood wine clasped tightly in his hand. Holding onto the safety rope that Travis strung from the cabin door to the stern, he made his way back to Nick and held out the bottle.
“Take the wheel a minute!” Nick yelled.
Feeling a little apprehensive about doing what he asked, Joe clipped his safety rope on and stepped in his place.
Nick moved to the side, but stayed within reaching distance of the wheel. He quickly drank half the bottle and checked the controls, keeping a mental note on the compass heading. Draining the rest of the bottle he tossed it overboard just as a large wave hit the starboard side. Nick was thrown down, landing on his stomach and slid across the slick deck when the yacht rolled. He banged against the seat just below where Sav was sitting. Shaking the water from his face, he looked up to see Joe spinning the wheel to port to help bring the yacht upright.
“Not too far!” Nick shouted and sprang to his feet, rushing over to him and took the wheel back.
Joe punched him in the shoulder. “Don’t make me do that again asshole unless you want to swim to Africa!”
“You did the right thing Joe, it’s alright!” Nick smiled and glanced around him. “Where is Rick!?”
Joe turned to where Sav was supposed to be. “Oh shit…” He lunged to the side and leaned over the rail to see him dangling down the side by his safety rope. “Rick!” The yacht rolled and he went under water for a few seconds. Joe leaned further over the side, his own safety rope growing taunt around his waist. He grabbed Sav’s wrist to pull him up and over the railing. Both men tumbled to the deck, with Sav landing on top of Joe. Water swirled around them as they both caught their breath.
“Are you alright!?” Nick yelled glancing down at them.
Joe waved his hand to let him know that they were. “Trying to go for a swim baby?”
Sav clenched the rain slicker on Joe’s shoulders. “No you nitwit. I wasn’t excepting that wave to knock me off!”
“You are going below and don’t argue with me.”
“Get me off this boat.” Sav replied and dropped his head on Joe’s chest.
Joe smiled and struggled to get both of them to a standing position, Sav held on to the safety rope, waiting for Joe to unhook their harness.
“I’ll be back soon.” Joe yelled to Nick.
“No, you stay down there and take care of him. Travis and I can handle this!”
“You will let me know if you need any help.”
Nick waved him off, returning his attention to the yacht and storm.
Carefully making their way down the stairway, he shut the door tightly behind them. Joe quickly shed his slicker, then helped Sav with his.
Leading him to the aft bathroom, Sav leaned heavily against the sink, while Joe grabbed some towels from the cabinet. “Get out of those wet clothes and I’ll dry you off.”
“I can dry myself.” Sav told him and removed his clothes.
Joe did the same and took a few more towels, draping one around Sav’s shoulders as he wrapped the other around his waist.
“Come on, we can snuggle in bed.”
Sav nodded in agreement and Joe led him from the bathroom. Chelsea was making her way through the sitting area as they approached. Joe told Sav to go ahead and he would be there soon, he wanted to speak with Chelsea and check on Crystal first.
Fifteen minutes later Joe stepped into the master cabin, Sav was already in bed curled up on his side. Pulling some silk boxer’s from his drawer, Joe slide them on and climbed in bed beside him. Taking the strap from the beside, he stretched it over them, latching it to the bed. Effectivly keeping them from rolling off again as the yacht rolled over the steep waves. Joe grabbed the light blanket to cover them as he scooting over to spoon Sav from behind. Easing his arm under Sav’s head, he draped the other one over his waist, to twine his fingers through his. After they had gotten comfortable, Joe felt Sav began to relax in his arms.
“Try to get some sleep.” Joe whispered in his ear.
“I’m exhausted but don’t think I can sleep.” Sav mumbled back. “My stomach is painful knots.”
Joe leaned forward more, trailing his lips over the back of Sav’s neck and shoulder. He felt him shudder, but didn’t know if it was from what he was doing or the sick feeling.
“I’m sorry baby, I wish there was more I could do for you.”
Sav pulled Joe’s arm tighter around him, letting their minds mingle together. Sav inwardly smiled when Joe started thinking about being on stage, a sea of people pumping their fist in the air with the music. He let the music flow, the thump of his bass coming from the speakers, feeling the energy from the crowd, Joe’s soft voice in his ear...
***
Late night, the fourth day of the storm, Joe snapped his eyes open, he titled his head to listen. It took him a few minutes to realize what woke him so suddenly…the quiet and gentle sway of the yacht. Closing his eyes, he breathed a sigh of relief that they were finally clear of the storm. Dropping his head back down, he felt Sav move a bit in front of him, he was still tucked safely within his arms. Dipping his head down, Joe breathed deeply of his scent that wasn’t masked by the ocean water and rain.
“This is how we are supposed to wake up every night, wrapped around each other, not thousands of miles apart. I came so close to really losing you this time, because of my own selfishness, hatred, unbearable grief that almost cost me everything.”
Joe’s soft voice pulled him from his light slumber, Sav slowly opened his eyes, blinking several times to clear his vision. He waited for Joe to say something more and didn’t have long to wait.
“Thomas made me see how wrong I was, to keep thinking his death was your fault…that you didn’t try hard enough to save him.” Joe squeezed his eyes tightly shut against the tears. “I fought it in my dreams, I didn’t want to see what happened that day in his office. But I had to accept it, there was no escaping it, had to face his death, if not, I would have gone insane from fighting it, so I let it…gave in and let it happen.”
Sav squeezed his hand that was still intertwined with his, encouraging him to continue, that he was listening.
“I…I understand now, better than I did before, why you kept everything from me, although I think Thomas did too…the worse parts anyway. I don’t think I want to see or know about those...he showed me enough. When I hugged him, I felt the warmth radiate from him, the powerful love in that room…from every…one…I know it was just a dream, but it felt so real.”
“It was real to me.” Sav spoke softly.
Joe had sensed that he was already awake shortly after he gave voice to his thoughts of his dreams. He tightened his arms around Sav and breathed into his hair. “I know.”
“You have to understand why I didn’t at the time, I couldn’t. You were already dealing with enough as it were, knowing what happened that day would have only compounded the problems, cloud your mind more.”
“I believe you are right about that, it would have clouded my judgment on how to deal with the situation, how to get you home safely. I know what happened in his office now, what you did to try and save him, what you went through when you couldn’t.”
Sav shifted his position, rolling over so they were face to face, he reached up to brush the tears away with his thumb. “I would do it all over again, but with a very different ending.”
“I know.” Joe replied softly.
Pushing himself up, Sav leaned forward to kiss him. “I’m glad you finally told me about your dreams.”
“It seemed…the moment felt right, you weren’t sleeping that hard and I knew my voice would wake you.”
Tilting his head sideways, Sav stared down at him. “How do you feel now that you have let it all out?”
“I should be asking you that question.”
“I asked first.”
Joe shrugged his shoulder and rolled to his back. “Relief maybe…I don’t know…it doesn’t feel as heavy now, like the weight of the world has been on my shoulders for the past year and half.”
“You found that peaceful place Joe. Thomas helped you let go of all the hurt, hatred and anger.”
“Not all of the hatred, not yet anyway. I hate myself for the way I treated you. It’s like you told me years ago, demons aren’t so willing to forgive and forget.”
“In time, those too will go away.”
Tears filled his eyes again. “It was so wrong of me to treat you that way.”
Sav placed his finger over Joe’s lips. “sshh, I know you didn’t mean any of it. You lashed out at me and I understood, but that still doesn’t excuse my own behavior of running from the problems. So you see…I have a few of my own demons to wrestle with.”
“I guess that is fair enough.”
“I guess so.” Sav smiled. “We can wrestle them together.”
“Are we Rick?”
“Together, you mean?”
“Yes.”
Sav’s smile widen as he slid his body on top of him. “It’s where we are meant to be, where we have been for weeks now.”
Joe finally returned his smile and glanced at his mouth, anticipating his kiss when the door opened and both men turned their heads.
“Ah, you’re awake.” Nick announced as he strolled in. “And it seems I interrupted something.”
“Nothing we can’t finish later.” Joe informed him. “Or in front of you.”
“Indeed.” Nick knowingly smiled, then turned his gaze to Sav. “How are you feeling Richard?”
Sav rolled off Joe and sat up, pulling the sheet around his waist. “Better, now that the bo…yacht isn’t rocking so badly.”
“We cleared the storm ear;y this morning, made few repairs to the…boat and we are under way again.”
“Very funny.” Sav smirked at him for using boat. “How long was I asleep?”
“About 32 hours.” Joe told him.
“What?”
“32 hours, but you had help. We gave you something to help you sleep, it was for the best that you rode out the storm sleeping. You couldn’t hold anything down, refused tiny sips, that turned into…”
Sav held up his hands to stop Joe. “I don’t need a play by play. The sore muscles in my stomach are enough reminder.”
Sav looked at Joe then back to Nick. “I don’t know weather to thank you and yell at you.”
“Thank me.” Nick smiled and shed his damp clothes, then climbed on the bed with them. “I’m extremely tired and really need to get some sleep.”
“Did you get any during the storm Nick?” Joe asked as he swung his legs to the floor to retrieve the bottles he left in the basket for safe keeping.
“No.”
“And you call me a worry wart.” Joe grumbled, as he slid back under the sheet, giving one bottle to Sav. “I thought you said he didn’t want to join us Rick?”
“I’m here to sleep Joseph, nothing more.”
“What is wrong with the sail room?”
Nick sighed heavily. “Is it to much to ask for a little care and comfort from you once in a while?”
“Well…” Joe scratched his chin.
Nick huffed and threw back the sheet, intending to get up, but Sav grabbed his shoulder to hold him on the bed, then shot Joe a heated stare.
“I was only kidding Nick, all you had to do is ask.”
“He did ask Joe.”
“It sounded more like a statement to me, or was it a question…” Joe frowned and shook his head. “..anyway…he can stay as long as he wants to and do whatever he wants to.”
Nick snapped his eyes open, raising his head he looked over at Sav, then Joe. “I’m much too tired for that kind of activity.”
“You were invited and turned it down.” Joe reminded him.
“humph.” Nick grabbed the sheet and flipped to his side, facing away from them. “Go back to sleep Joseph.”
Joe giggled and scooted closer to Sav when he laid back down. “Lusty dreams Nick.” Sav punched him in the arm and told him to be quiet.
