Chapter 28
Thanksgiving
**************
“James,” his mother said as the door opened to reveal an elderly woman dressed in a grey woollen skirt, starched white blouse and navy blue cardigan.
“Mother,” James replied.
She stepped aside to allow him to enter.
“You’re looking well,” he added with a smile.
She tilted her head and he bent to kiss her cheek. His lips had barely brushed her cheek when she turned her head away. She clearly had no intention of returning the greeting.
“I brought you these,” he said handing his mother a large bouquet. “I hope you…”
“Oh,” she said, dismissively. “They’re yellow.”
James had spent ages choosing the flowers. He should have known she’d find something wrong with them whatever his selection. His mother had never managed to perfect the art of accepting a gift graciously - especially when it was from him - but she hadn’t ever shown any dislike of yellow before. How was he to know?
“New car?” she asked glancing toward the street.
He followed her gaze to the Blazer he’d parked outside. He knew she’d complain if he parked it on the driveway. It seemed parking it in the street wasn’t going to escape comment either.
“An extravagant choice if I might say so.”
Who’d dare try and stop her?
“I hope you’re not expecting me to help with the repayments.”
“No, Mother. It’s rented. I got a free upgrade,” he explained.
Shit! Why did he have to justify everything? And when had he ever asked to borrow money from her?
“I flew up. Didn’t have enough time to drive all the way. I was working until late.”
It was just a white lie. He hoped she wouldn’t see through it.
“Hmph!” she grunted as he closed the door and dropped his bag in the hall.
Fortunately he was saved from further conversation by his niece who bounded down the stairs and leaped into his arms.
“Uncle James!” she yelled as he pulled her off the ground and spun her around.
“And how’s my favourite niece?” he asked as she beamed up at him.

“So how long have you been living together?” Bo asked.
“Since the end of last week,” David replied.
“Oh, Davy!” she exclaimed. “And you abandoned him. How could you? I mean you’re like newly-weds. Poor James!”
“I tried to persuade him to come but he didn’t want to disappoint his mother,” David explained. “It’s the only time he ever sees her.”
“Oh, that’s awful,” Bo said. “Why didn’t you go with him then? Mom and Dad would have understood.”
“I suggested that too… but his mother doesn’t know abos…” s…”
“Ah!”
“He says she wouldn’t understand. I think he doesn’t want to upset her. She’s very religious.”
“But if he loves you…” Bo began. “He does, doesn’t he? Love you, I mean.”
David could feel himself blushing.
“Yeah,” he mumbled. “He does. I’m sure of that.”
“Oh, Davy, I’m so happy for you,” she said, pulling him into a hug.
*****************
“But you used to have such lovely hair,” James’ mother said. “Why did you have to spoil it?”
Was there a compliment hidden in there somewhere?
“It wasn’t my choice, Mother. I have to wear it like this for the role.”
“It makes you look like a drug addict,” she added. “When we go out, you’ll wear a hat.”
James looked up as his sister entered the room.
“I like it,” she mouthed behind their mother’s back. “It’s sexy!”
“And isn’t it time you got a real job, James? You’ll be thirty six next year. You can’t keep play acting forever. You should be settled by now in a steady job with a reliable income, like your brother… Simon has his own company now. Did he tell you he’s planning to open another office in New York?”
Would she never let up?
“And, anyway, if you were going to make the grade as an actor you’d have done so by now. Gregory Peck and James Stewart had both been nominated for Academy Awards by their early thirties…”
“Oh, that’s not fair, Mother,” James’ sister said in his defence. “You can’t compare the movidustdustry of the thirties and forties with today… James is very talented. There just aren’t the big breaks…”
“Yes, but television… and a teen soap at that… What if one of my friends saw the show? I’d die of embarrassment. Is that what you want, James?”
Sometimes he just wanted to scream at her…
*****************
“Are you sure this is what you want, Darling?” David’s mother asked him. “It won’t be easy for either of you but if it’s what you want you know you’ll have our full support.”
“Yes, Mom, it is. I’m sure. Very sure,” David replied.
She smiled at him and he pulled her into a hug.
“Thanks, Mom.”
*****************
“Simon,” James said, jumping to his feet to extend his hand to his brother as he joined the family in the drawing room.
Simon ignored the proffered hand. James let it fall to his side and stood awkwardly, gazing at the balding man in the pin-stripe suit.
“Sarah,” he said, nodding to his brother’s wife as she appeared in the doorway.
“James? Goodness, I almost didn’t recognise you,” Simon guffawed. “What have you done to yourself? You look like a fag.”
Sarah giggled.
James started for the door. He was tempted to leave now but he didn’t want to give his mother an excuse to blame him for ruining her Thanksgiving.
“Excuse me,” he said to his mother as he passed her in the hall. “I… er… need to wash up before we eat.”
*****************
“Are you sure you’re okay with this, Dad?” David asked as they rode across the meadow approaching the house. He didn’t have the opportunity or the time to ride these days and he’d forgotten how much he enjoyed it.
“Of course I am, Son,” his father replied. “I can’t pretend I wasn’t surprised at first - although your mother tells me she’d had her suspicions for some time - but it’s your choice and I respect that. I don’t understand it - not when you could have any woman you wanted - but I respect it. You know you have my full support, don’t you, David?”
“Yeah, Dad, Mom told me. Thanks. You’ve been great about it. I couldn’t wish for better parents.”
“So, when am I going to meet this young man? You know your mother had her heart set on having him join us for the holiday.”
