Ian stepped out of the shower and ran for the phone. “Hello?”
October 4, 2011 Philadelphia, PA
“Ian, its David.”
“Hello. What’s up?”
“Hi. Um, you’re going to want to get on a plane today. Chris has been admitted and they’re scheduling the c-section for tomorrow as soon as you can get here.”
“Oh my god. Is Chris okay?”
“Yes, she’s fine but her blood pressure is a little elevated. The babies are fine but Chris is past the thirty two week mark and they don’t want Chris to go into labor. Take a deep breath.”
“Whew. Okay. You’re sure Chris is okay?”
“Yes, Ian I wouldn’t lie to you about this. She’s a little worn out but all the babies look great. They did a sonogram twenty minutes ago. Chris said they already have a strong kick and you’d better be ready to donate a kidney to her.”
Laughing, Ian shook his head. “Hell, I’ll do that in a heartbeat. Okay. Um. I’ve got to call Michael and the charter company and get Michael’s parents on the road. I’ll call you in a couple of hours and let you know when we’ll be there. You’re at Queen Charlotte’s?”
“Yes. Do you have something to write on? I can give you the number at the reception desk.”
&&
Running down the stairs, Ian dialed Debbie’s phone number once he got to the foyer.
“Callahan’s”
“Ryan? It’s Ian. We’re having babies tomorrow!”
“Finally! I’ll get Debbie and our bags. Want me to call Fred and Jackie? We’re all driving up together.”
“Thanks. We’ll see you in a couple of hours. Do you have the directions?”
“Yes, we all have copies. See you there!”
Ian hit one of his shortcut buttons and connected to the PT desk at the hospital.
“Children’s Hospital Physical Therapy, Anne speaking.”
“Hi Anne, its Ian. Is Michael available?”
“Oh hi Ian. He’s just finishing up with a session. Do you want to wait for a sec?”
“Yes please.”
Ian was put on hold and used the time to bang on the basement door before opening it and yelling down the stairs. “Grant! Grant wake up!”
“Uh Ian? I’m sitting right here at the kitchen table and I’ve been told I’m pretty hard to miss.”
Whirling around, Ian saw Grant sitting just where he said he was sitting and simultaneously heard Michael pick up the phone. He held a finger up to Grant.
“Hey Baby. Are you calling to invite me to lunch?”
“No I’m calling because we’re having babies tomorrow!” Ian had the great satisfaction of seeing Grant spit out all the coffee he’d just tried to swallow.
“Babies! Tomorrow! Oh my god!”
“That’s what I said! How quickly can you get home or do you want me to pick you up?”
“I’ll come home. Are you going to get Chloe or should I do it?”
“I’ll do it. I’ll see you in half an hour?”
“Yes. Did you call my parents?”
“Already done. Ryan’s taking care of getting them moving.”
“Okay. Love you!”
“I love you too.”
&&
Ian pulled his car into the parent’s parking space and hurried into the building, waving hello to one of the classes heading to the gym and stopping at the administration office.
“Hi Ian.”
“Hi Delores. I’m here to pick up Chloe. We’re having babies tomorrow!”
“Congratulations!” Delores used the paging system and called Chloe to the office. She reached behind her and handed Ian a packet in a manila envelope. “Here’s Chloe’s homework for the next two weeks; if you’re there longer just call and I’ll fax you more.”
“Delores, if I hadn’t met Michael first I’d marry you in a heartbeat!”
“Oh you flirt.”
“Papa!”
“Chloe! We’re having babies tomorrow!”
“Yippee!”
&&
“You know what’s weird?”
“Um? What?”
“How well my parents get along now.” Michael nodded down the aisle at the older foursome who were passing time by playing pinochle.
“Did they fight a lot even after the divorce?”
“No, they were really civil to each other. Sort of too civil.”
“Ah. They were playing nice but you could tell that they were still pissed at each other.”
“Uh huh. Did you know they play cards together every week?”
“Um. I guess I did. Where is this going?”
“No where. It’s just so weird.”
“You’re fighting the urge to get up and pace, aren’t you?”
“Yeah except the bulkhead is too short so I’m not even going to try. Where’d Chloe get to?”
“She’s over there on the floor doing her homework with your laptop.”
“Homework?”
“Yes. Delores gave me all her stuff for the next two weeks and Chloe wanted to get started on it.”
“Oh. That was sweet of Delores and very industrious of Chloe.
“I’ve already made a note to pick up postcards for Delores.”
&&
“Mr. Thorpe, Mr. Phelps? We’re landing in twenty minutes.”
Michael woke up and nudged Ian. “Thank you. What time is it in England?”
“Almost four AM.”
“Oh. Thanks.” Michael reset his watch and nudged Ian again.
“Wha?”
“We’re landing in twenty minutes.”
“Erch.”
“I’m going to check on Chloe and use the bathroom. I’ll be right back.”
Michael returned a few minutes later and handed Ian a cup of coffee. “Its decaf but I figured you didn’t need the caffeine at this point.”
“Thank you love. I’m amazed I was able to sleep.”
“Me too but we aren’t going to get much over the next couple of months, knock wood.
“Aren’t you superstitious?”
“Hey, I’m not the one refuses to put together the babies’ cribs.”
“That would be bad luck.”
“Uh huh.”

October 5, 2011 London, England
“Hey Chris. How are you feeling?” Ian asked as he leaned down and gave her a kiss.
“Relieved that you made it in time. Did you stop in earlier?”
“Yes. You were supposed to be sleeping.”
“Oh, I’ll sleep later. Where’s Michael?”
“He’s out talking to our solicitor but he’ll be here in a minute.”
“Is there a problem?”
“No, they’re just making sure we’ve got all the paperwork. The guy from the Australian Embassy is also out there so you know how that goes.”
“Does he still want to be in the room?”
“We’ll both be there. Michael’s going to tell me when to look.”
“You’d better not faint.”
“I’m going to try not too but Michael said he’d make sure I didn’t fall on you either way.”
Chris laughed a little then winced. “Ow! I don’t know which one is always kicking me when I laugh but he’s not getting any birthday presents from Auntie Chris, that’s for sure.”
“He?”
“Figure of speech.” Chris said quickly.
They both turned to the door when it opened and Michael peeked in. “Hey, can I come in?”
“Come on.” Chris said with a wave.
“Uh. Wow. You’re really big.”
“And hello to you too.”
“Sorry but wow. How are you feeling?”
“Like a Christmas cracker. If one of you took my hands and the other my feet, I’d pop.”
“They were talking outside that they’re almost ready in the operating room.”
“Michael, don’t say the ‘O’ word.”
“Which ‘O’ word? Oreo? Olive? Orgasm?”
“Hey! Are you talking about sex in front of my wife?” David asked as he came in.
“No!” Ian and Chris said together.
“Right. Anyway, the doctor said they’ll be taking you down in twenty minutes. Guys, we’re supposed to go down and get scrubbed up and your parents want to come in for a quick peek.”
Michael leaned down and gave Chris a peck on the forehead. “We’ll see you in a few minutes unless you’d like to run away with me to Scotland.”
“Ha. Ooh. Like David and Ian wouldn’t hunt us down.”
“Chris, love you big sister.”
“I love you too little brother.”
Ian and Michael left so Chris and David could have a private moment, stopping in to see their parents and the children for a moment before joining David down the hall where a nurse led them into a room and started instructing them on how to scrub up. Michael just nodded and went to it, dealing with the gown and mask without assistance.
%%
Ian couldn’t help peeking when it sounded like things were getting interesting and was transfixed by the sight of a squirmy squalling thing being lifted up by the doctor.
“Looks like we’ve got a boy here. How are you doing, Chris?”
“Just fine. He’s a big one isn’t he?”
“He is indeed. Congratulations Ian and Michael. You have a son.”
“Ian, you can look now.”
“I’m looking. I’m looking. Does he look okay?”
Michael answer was interrupted by the doctor holding up another squirmy squalling thing. “And it’s another boy. Oh, he’s a mad one too.”
“Ian, are you watching this?”
“Yes. Oh look at his little legs go.” Ian’s eyes were glued onto the baby as the umbilical cord was cut and he was handed off to a nurse only to whip his head around when the doctor spoke again.
“Here comes baby number three and its boy number three. He’s a fine strapping lad too.”
Ian was a bit worried when this baby wasn’t squalling as it came out but after a little chest rub from the doctor, the baby was soon displaying another fine set of lungs.
A minute later the fourth baby appeared and at this point, Ian didn’t need the doctor to tell him it was another boy who was screaming the loudest of all.
“Chris, I think this one was your little tap dancer. He was squished up on the bottom. This is boy number four.”
“Oh my god. We have four little boys. Ian, did you see this?”
“I saw and I can’t believe it. Do you know what this means?”
“That Australia’s a shoo-in for the men’s relay races in 2030?”
“Michael!”
“Oh, I’m only joking.” Michael said as he slid his arm around Ian’s waist. “They’re beautiful and we’re incredibly lucky.”
“Chris, how are you doing?” Ian asked anxiously.
“Good. Guys, they are beautiful and I’m extremely glad they’re all yours.” Chris said with a snicker.
“Oh. Um. Ian. You need to turn away now.” Michael said, noticing that the doctor was getting ready to put in sutures.
“What? Oh. Oh. Needle.”
“Why don’t we just stroll over here and look at the babies? Chris, we’ll be back.”
“Don’t forget to go out and tell the parents. They’re probably ready to break in.” David said.
“Oh. Right. Ian, do you want to stay or tell?”
“Are they going to let us hold the babies?”
“Probably not for a couple of minutes.”
Ian cast a quick glance over his shoulder. “Then I’ll tell. You’ll let me know if the babies do anything exciting, won’t you?”
“I promise.”
Ian gave Michael a quick kiss and a goose before heading out to the waiting room after stripping off his gloves and removing the face mask. He was halfway down the hall when he spotted his father pacing at the end.
“Dad!”
“Ian! How did it go?” Ken asked anxiously.
“We’ve got four babies! Chris is fine. The babies are very upset with the whole situation.”
“And?”
“Boys.”
“All of them?”
“Uh huh. Where is everyone else?”
“Down that way.” Ken pointed to the left then walking along with Ian. “All of them are boys?”
“Yep!” Ian said with a big smile as he found the large waiting room then paused. “Oh. I hope Chloe didn’t have her heart set on a sister.”
“Ian?” Margaret asked, sticking her head out the door. “Oh. I did hear you. Is everything okay?”
“Yes mum. Everything is fantastic. Four babies!” Ian said, giving her a hug and noticing the rest of their family crowding behind the door. “Four babies!”
“How’s Chris?”
“She’s fine. Where’s Chloe?”
“I’m right here, Papa!” Chloe said, trying to squirm in between Fred and Ryan.
“Everyone, let’s move inside a bit.” Ken suggested. “It’s a hospital after all.”
Ian sat down and helped Chloe climb into his lap as everyone else sat down around them.
“Is Aunt Chris really okay? Are the babies okay?”
“Yes, everyone is fine. Chloe, how do you feel about little brothers?”
“Amanda has a little brother.”
“I know and now you have four little brothers.” Ian could hear the parents all talking excitedly but kept his focus on Chloe.
“They’re all boys?”
“Uh huh.”
“I still don’t have to change diapers?”
“Not if you don’t want to.”
“Okay. Can I maybe get a little sister later?”
“Daddy and I will talk about it but I’m not going to promise.”
“Okay.”
“Ian, all boys?” Ryan asked.
“All boys.”
“And?” Debbie prompted.
“They were crying to beat the band.”
“And? Lengths, weights, names?”
“Oh. Um. They were still doing all the stuff.”
The doors opened and Michael came in with a bounce. “Hi! Ian, they’re moving the babies over to our room and Chris is being moved back to her room. Hold out your wrist.”
Ian did so and Michael snapped the first of four plastic bracelets on it. “There, now you can get into the room with the babies. Hi Chloe. Did Papa tell you?”
“Uh huh.” Chloe nodded her head.
“Do you want to see them? I have all the details on the camera. Here, give me your wrist sweetie.” Michael said, snapping another bracelet on her wrist.
“Michael, can we go in and see Chris or the babies?”
“Chris in twenty or thirty minutes and if one of you gets in there before us, she really wants a coffee. The doctor said she could have one. Ian, Chloe and I can go see the babies in ten or fifteen minutes but there’s a window so we can show them off. They said other family can go in later this afternoon. Oh. I’m babbling.”
&&
The room they were to use during their stay was large and spacious, with a couch that turned into a bed, a cot for Chloe and several rocking chairs. Ian didn’t notice any of it as his attention was fixed on the four little bodies in open incubators. The boys were now clean but still making a lot of noise.
“My god. Look at all the little fingers.” Ian said in a hushed voice.
“Would you like to hold one?” The nurse asked. “They’re fussing because they’re getting a bit hungry.”
“Already?”
“Well they don’t have a built in feeding tube anymore and they’re big little boys. Go on and pick them up.”
“Can I hold one?” Chloe asked.
“Of course you can but let your dads pick up one of the babies for you. You’re a bit short to safely lift them out.”
Michael, noting that Ian was a little hesitant, went over and picked up the quietest of the babies very carefully making sure to support his head. “Wow. Boy, he’s heavy.”
Ian shook his head and stepped forward, picking up the baby who was making the most noise just as expertly as Michael had. “Oh. No need to fuss. Papa’s here and he’ll make it all better.”
While Michael was showing Chloe how to hold and feed the baby in her arms, Ian took the bottle from the nurse and sat down. Michael started to pick another baby up then realized they were a person short for all the babies to feed at once.
“Nurse, would it be okay for one of our parents to come in? He nodded to the window where all six were looking on.
“Of course but I’m not going out there and picking one.”
Michael grinned and stuck his head out the door. “We need an extra set of hands.”
“Ken, you go. You didn’t get to hold Ian until he was three days old.” Margaret suggested. The other parents all nodded.
“But I won’t remember-.”
“I’ll show you. Come on Ken.”
Ian’s father was soon ensconced in a rocker with a baby and a bottle. “So, have you thought about names?”
“We’ve discussed it but nothing’s in stone.”
Michael looked up. “I thought we were going with John, Paul, George and Ringo?”
Ken laughed at the look on Ian’s face. “That’s a great idea.”
“Dad!”
&&
Later that evening, Ian and Michael were standing with their arms around each other watching the babies sleep. They knew this state wasn’t going to last long so they were enjoying it while they could. The other grandparents had all had their time with the babies and Chloe had decided to stay at the hotel with them instead of at the hospital.
“We really do need to come up with some names, baby. I thought you had it all worked out?”
“Well I’ve reconsidered the matter. I really wasn’t expecting all boys.”
“Identical boys. No wonder Chris didn’t want to do the reduction.” Michael remarked.
“I can’t believe she and David knew we were having boys all along and never let it slip.”
“I can’t believe she wants to go home already.”
“Well, she’s stubborn and she misses Iona and Daniel. Thank goodness Dr. Baum said she had to stay a few days.”
“This brings us back to the names.”
“Hey, did someone call Grant and Pieter?”
“I have no idea. Um. I guess I’d better call just in case.” Michael went over to the phone and after reading the instructions, dialed out.
“Hello.”
“Pieter?”
“Michael! How is it going? Do you have babies yet?”
“Yes we do. Four beautiful little boys.”
“Relay team!”
“That’s what I said.”
“How is Chris?”
“She’s fine and wants to go home.”
“After a c-section?”
“They’re not going to let her.”
“I’d hope not. So tell me all the details.”
“Baby A is five pounds and two ounces, twenty and a quarter inches long. Baby B is five pounds four ounces, twenty one inches long even. Baby C is five pounds four ounces and twenty and a half inches long. Baby D was the bruiser; five and a half pounds and twenty two inches. He was the one on the bottom too. They were born between nine ten and nine twenty am.”
“Wow. Big babies for a multiple birth but then you’re both big guys. No names?”
“Not yet. They’re identical by the way.”
“They’re all breathing okay?”
“Yes. Breathing well and eating well so far. Ms. Patterson said we might be able to take them home next Saturday.”
“Excellent news. I can’t believe Chris went so long into the pregnancy. She’s incredible.”
“I know. David brought her in earlier and she was complaining about having to use a wheelchair.”
“You think she’s putting on a good show so Ian doesn’t worry?”
“I don’t know. She did eat a full meal and she even got a shower.”
“Not alone?”
“No. They have a doula staff here.”
One of the babies started fussing and Pieter chuckled. “I think you’re being paged. Don’t forget to send us some pictures.”
“We will. Talk to you later.”
Ian was already dealing with one of the babies and Michael took the next one who started crying which gave Ian just enough time to grab the third baby and Michael to get the fourth. Then they changed diapers.
As they collapsed onto the couch, Ian sighed. “Oh my god.”
“Now will you consider hiring some additional help? I know your parents will be there during the day and I’ll be there at night but that’s a lot of mouths to feed and bottoms to wipe.”
“I don’t think I really have a choice as much as it pains me to admit it.”
“I have some name suggestions if you’re up to it.”
“Oh. Go on.”
“Robert Christopher for one who started crying first. William Kenneth for the one with the most hair. Henry Evan for the little guy and James Frederick for the big guy.”
“Hm. You really want to use James Frederick?”
“Yeah, I know it started as a joke but it’s a good name.”
“It is a good name. Robbie, Liam, Harry and Jamey?”
“Uh huh. Robert for Bob Bowman, Christopher for Christine. William for Williams and Kenneth for your dad. Henry Evan is sort of for Grant and Pieter.”
“Henry starts with ‘H’ like Hackett and Evan for van den Hoogenband and another ‘H’. Oh. I like it. Maybe we should sleep on it though just to be sure. Oh. Henry Evan Thorpe. HET. Maybe we should just stick with Van? Henry Van Thorpe. Henry Vanden Thorpe. Hee!”
“Okay I think you’re getting a bit giddy. Think we could manage to get the bed pulled out and get a little sleep?”

October 14, 2011 London, England
Michael carefully belted in the fourth infant carrier and tested it thoroughly before Debbie set Harry down and strapped him in. Michael yawned as he stood and hurried to get a bottle as Debbie sat down and handled her own seat belt.
Ian was doing a last minute check that they had everything and everyone and joined Michael at the galley kitchen. “I think we’re good.”
“Okay. The pilot said we were going to take off in a while.” Michael said through another yawn. “I hope the kids do okay once we’re in the air.”
“That’s what the bottles are for.”
Michael nodded and tested one of the bottles on his wrist. “I really need a nap.”
“I know.” Ian said, rubbing his back. “Thank you for taking care of the babies last night.”
“Hey, I figure that one of us needs to be awake for this. Sorry you got the short straw.”
“We didn’t draw- oh!” Ian said, catching sight of Michael’s grin. “Here let me take over the bottle duty. Can you get your laptop going for me?”
“Sure. Oh. I guess I should check my email.”
“You probably should. I haven’t checked mine either.”
“I’ll get right on it before I take care of one little thing.”
“What’s that?”
Michael tilted his head forward and captured Ian’s lips with his. After a very satisfying kiss, Michael stepped back. “I love you.”
“I love you.”
&&
The bottle trick worked pretty well when the altitude change made the babies very fussy and the parents seemed to have things well in hand so Ian felt safe spending a few minutes on the computer. He wasn’t surprised that it took a couple of minutes to download his email since he hadn’t it checked since before the boys were born but three hundred and twenty two messages? What the heck?
Ah, the family email list had gotten the news about the babies and had gone crazy. First there were thirty messages with name suggestions then forty seven messages pro or con the names they’d chosen and the rest were good wishes or advice on raising the boys. Ian sighed and checked his other email account which he used for school and friends and found another hundred messages.
After getting up and checking the babies, he grabbed the camera and downloaded one of the group photos, composed a quick message and sent it off almost everyone in his address book.
He took a break to change two diapers, burp Liam and help Chloe with a math problem then returned to the computer to find twelve more emails responding to his email. He shook his head and shut down the mail program to do the things he really wanted the laptop for. He typed in the address for the University of Michigan’s alumna website and happily updated his bio. Ha! Father of five and he wasn’t even twenty nine. Oh. Ian checked the date on the computer then the date on his watch.
Ian got up and sat down across from his mother who was burping Robbie. “Mum, what’s today?”
“I think it’s Thursday, dear.”
“And?”
“And what?”
“It’s my birthday.”
“It is? Today’s the thirteenth? Oh, Ian. I totally forgot.”
“It’s okay so did I. I just can’t believe Michael forgot it. Not that we do big celebrations but he normally does give me a card.”
“I didn’t forget. Check your Palm.” Michael said from across the aisle.
“I thought you were asleep?”
“I heard you maligning my good name and instantly woke up. Well not really. The seat is a little too short.”
“Ah. Why don’t you use the floor? There’s space in the back and you could really stretch out without anyone tripping over you.”
“I knew there was a reason I married you.” Michael said, getting up and dragging his blanket and pillow down the aisle after dropping a kiss on Ian’s head. Ian got up and found his Palm Pilot and opened it up to find an envelope.
He opened the card and read the sweet message the Michael had written then opened the smaller envelope that Michael had tucked inside it. He unfolded the paper and read it three times before getting up and sitting down on the floor by Michael.
“How much did this cost you?”
“Would you believe it didn’t cost a cent?”
“An eight bedroom townhouse in TriBeCa?”
“Speedo wants to rent it for us so I don’t worry about you and the kids. I haven’t said yes yet because we do have reservations on the cruise ship.”
“You didn’t say yes? Are you crazy?”
“Well I looked it up on the map and it seemed like it would be convenient but I wanted to check with you.”
“But a townhouse in New York is so much better and if the cross streets are correct, it’s right off the West Side Highway. We can all stay there including Grant and Pieter and the parents and Chris and David if they want to come. There’s even an elevator!”
“So you want me call Gwen and accept?”
“Yes. Do you have her number?”
“Um. It’s in my book. Can I call her when we get home?”
“Oh. You need your sleep. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay.” Michael accepted the kiss of apology that turned into something a little more interesting before they both realized where they were and one of the babies started fussing.
Ian chuckled and rested his forehead against Michael’s. “I guess I’d better go find out what’s wrong. Can I have a rain check?”
“Anytime baby.”
Ian got up and went to find out why Harry was crying. Ah. He stopped when he saw that Debbie was already changing his diaper and sat down again across from his mom. He quietly told her what Michael had come up with and wasn’t surprised when his mother gave him a look.
“What?”
“Michael spoils you horribly.”
“Yes he does.”
&&
Landing in Philadelphia was the same routine with the bottles although none of the boys were particularly hungry and included having a customs agent meet their plane before they were all loaded into two limousines and driven out to the long term parking area.
They had a quick discussion at their cars and Michael, Ian and Chloe and the babies remained in their limo while Ken, Fred and Margaret took their car and luggage back to the house.
“Do I have to go to school tomorrow?”
“Hm. Well you have been working very hard on your homework and its Friday. Michael, what do you think?”
“I think you’re staying home tomorrow but you’ll have to go to school on Monday.”
“Awesome. Can Amanda come over and see my brothers?”
“How about you invite her over on Sunday? That will give us a couple of days to get settled in.”
“Okay. She might be at her dad’s this weekend anyway.”
“Then she can come over on Monday if her mom says its okay.”
“Cool.”
&&
The back door opened as soon as the limo pulled up and Grant and Pieter hurried out to the car and opened the door once the car stopped moving.
“Oh. Babies!” Pieter exclaimed. “Let me hold one!”
“I’m going to do better than that. You get to take Robbie inside.” Ian said as he unbuckled a car seat.
“Grant, did you hear that?”
“Yes I did and I’d better get a baby too or I’m going to pout.”
“You can take Harry inside. Chloe love, do you have your backpack?”
“Yes Papa and I’ll get the diaper bag.” Chloe said as she slipped out of the car, stopping to get kisses from her uncles.
“Thank you. Michael, do you have Jamey?”
“Yep. Here, pass Harry up.”
Ian took the carrier and handed it out to Grant who immediately but carefully went into the house followed by Pieter carrying Robbie.
Ian got out and took both Jamey and Liam then handed Jamey off to Michael. The limo driver said he’d take care of putting any stuff they had in the car inside the house and waved off Michael’s attempt to tip him.
Inside, Grant and Pieter had set their baby carriers on the coffee table so the dogs could get a few sniffs of the new residents. The other boys were set down next to them and Ian and Michael sat down gratefully.
“Oh, it’s good to be home. Where’d Chloe go?” Michael said, putting his feet up.
“Upstairs to call all her girlfriends. I told her she could use the phone in your room because there’s going to be a lot of squealing.”
“Thank you. The dogs seem to be doing okay.” Ian noted. “I wonder where our parents got to.”
“Oh, they called and said they were going to stop for groceries. We weren’t sure what kind of formula to get or the type of diapers you wanted so there aren’t any here. Debs called and asked if we needed anything so I told her.”
“Thanks Grant. What do you think of them?”
“They’re very cute. How do you tell them apart?” Pieter asked.
“They still have their bracelets on but Harry cries at a higher pitch. Robbie cries the loudest and he’s always hungry first. Liam has more hair and he’s kind of laid back. Jamey’s still the biggest because he’s gained weight the fastest.” Ian said. “We also tied different colored strings on their ankles just in case. Harry is yellow, Robbie is red, Liam is blue and Jamey is green.”
“So when in doubt, check the ankle. By the way, we put the cribs together. We figured you’d need them now.”
“Pieter! Thank you. We have the bassinets but we’ll need the changing surface. How long did it take you?”
“It took us two days then Jake came over and got them done in two hours.” Grant said wryly. “Why do they make those things so difficult?”
“Jake? Melinda’s Jake?” Ian asked.
“Yeah. He and Melinda came over with Kylie and we all had dinner. She’s due on the twenty third and we figured they could use the break. Besides she wanted to see the baby pictures you sent.”
“I’ll have to call her tomorrow. Mum found a really nice baby gift for them. Michael, are you awake enough to go to the pool?”
“Huh? Oh. I guess. Wait, you want me to leave?”
“No I don’t want you to leave but you’ve only gotten in six hours of training in the last week.”
“But.”
“No buts. The parents will be here soon and we have an agreement.”
“Aw. Dammit.”
“Michael, I’ll be happy to go to the pool with you.” Grant volunteered.
“Thanks.” Michael said as he stood up with a sigh. “I’ll probably need you to make sure I don’t fall asleep in the water.”
&&
Michael and Grant returned four hours later with their arms full of Chinese food and sushi and made a special effort to be very quiet when they came in. The caution wasn’t necessary because all the babies were awake and being fed in the kitchen by Pieter, Margaret, Ken and Chloe.
“Oh, you angel! We’re all starving.” Margaret exclaimed.
“It was Grant’s idea. He figured no one would be up to cooking. Are my parents all still here?”
“Yes, they are.” Fred said as he walked in the room. “How was your swim, son?”
“Fine. I thought you guys were going home?”
“Your mom and Jackie are helping Ian get everything ready upstairs. Ryan and I are putting together the high chairs.”
“Are you guys staying the night? Because you’re more than welcome. Chloe hon? Do you want me to take over for you there? I got you egg rolls and sashimi.”
Michael handed off food for a baby just in time to have to burp him. He’d learned his lesson early and grabbed a dishtowel for his shoulder, handing one to Pieter and pacing a bit while he rubbed a tiny back.
“Pieter, that’s Jamey and you’ll need to walk him if you want him to burp.”
“Ah I was wondering.” Pieter said as he stole a bite of Grant’s shrimp lo-mien then got up to pace. “A bouncy step or just walk?”
“A little bouncy.” Michael hit the main intercom button with his elbow. “Moms? Ian? Ryan? We’ve got food downstairs.”
Ryan appeared first and got a plate and was soon followed by Debbie, Jackie and Ian, Ian exclaiming happily when he saw his favorite sushi. The babies got shifted around as everyone ate and were finally put in their bassinets in the family room as everyone sat down.
“It’s amazing how four little bodies can be so exhausting.” Grant said quietly as he lounged on the floor. “Chloe, what do you think of your little brothers?”
“They’re sort of boring.”
Michael smiled from his seat at Ian’s feet. “Wait until they start crawling.”
“Speaking of crawling, I think I’m going to bed. It’s almost one in London and I’m knackered.” Ken announced, heading for the first floor suite. Margaret yawned and got up to join him, pausing only to ruffle Ian’s hair and kiss Chloe good night.
“Chloe, I know it’s early but why don’t you head on up and get your shower? Daddy and I will be up to tuck you in by seven.”
Chloe got up and went around the room saying good night before going quietly up the stairs much to everyone’s surprise.
“Hm. Do you think she’s out growing the running everywhere phase?” Ian asked.
“No, I think she doesn’t want to wake up the babies.” Michael replied.
“Speaking of the babies, Jackie and I would like you to consider having us stay on for a couple of weeks. Just until you get a schedule going. We know you’re going to hire some extra hands and Margaret and Ken are here but you’ll need a little time to find the right person.”
Michael was surprised and looked at his dad and Ryan. “Are you guys okay with this?”
“It was your dad’s suggestion. We’ll go home on the weekends since Michael, Grant and Pieter will be here during the day.” Jackie explained, patting Fred’s knee.
Turning around to look at Ian, Michael raised his eyebrows. Ian chewed his lip for a minute then nodded. “Yes, I think we’d like that. Thank you, Fred for the great idea. Thank you Debbie and Jackie for agreeing to step into the madhouse and thank you Ryan for giving up your wife.”
“Oh, don’t worry about it. Fred and I are going fishing next week anyway.”

October 24, 2011 Philadelphia, PA
Michael parked his car and got out, grabbing his messenger bag, a shopping bag and coat before locking the door and heading into the hospital for his first day back in the ‘real world’ feeling a little torn. He loved learning and interacting with patients but he was missing things at home. Not just the babies but watching Ian with the babies.
He was sure that Ian didn’t realize it but Ian held these little conversations with each baby. Michael loved Ian’s voice anyway but hearing him croon and hum and ask them what them what they thought of things as if he was expecting them to answer was so cute. And sexy. Ahem. Michael was grateful that he had bags in his hands when the elevator door opened on his floor.
“Michael!” Anne said as he walked out. “How are the babies and did you bring pictures?”
“Ah. I see. You’re happy to see me but only if I bring baby news.”
“Get used to it.”
Michael grinned and put his bag and coat down. “First off, here’s something for the break room.” Michael handed over the bag of bagels then opened his bag. “And here’s the baby album.”
“Oh gimme.” Anne dropped the bagels on her desk and snatched it up. “Oh. Look at them. Michael, they’re beautiful.”
“Uh. Thanks. Do I have any appointments?”
“Huh?” Anne asked as she finally looked up. “Oh. You have Greg Fellers in ten minutes and Danica Cooper right after.”
“Thanks. Do you want to hold on to that?”
“Yes. I promise not to lose it.”
“Thanks again.” Michael shook his head and took the bagels back to the break room. On the way back, he ran into two other colleagues who left quickly when Michael told them Anne had the pictures.
Five minutes later he greeted eleven year old Greg and Greg’s mom in one of the therapy rooms. “Hey, Greg. How have you been?”
“I’m okay Mike. Dr. Tragger said I could start going to practices next week.”
“Excellent. You’re ahead of schedule so I know you’ve been doing your strength moves while I was gone. Now, what are you going to do at practice next week?”
“Not get on the court until I warm up?”
“Good answer. You want to run through your warm up routine?”
“Okay Mike!”
&&
An hour and a half later, he said good bye to the Fellers and changed into his swim trunks to meet Danica and her dad in the therapy pool room.
“Hey Danica, hey Roger.”
“Hi Mike! I’m already to go!” Fourteen year old Danica said from her wheelchair already wearing her swimsuit and floatation device.
“I see. Are you feeling up to getting in the sling yourself today or are we going to be your footmen?”
“Can you hold the sling for me?”
“Yep.”
Danica got herself into the sling with just a little help, a big difference from when Michael first started working with her. Once they were in the pool, Michael turned the controls on for a gentle wave and helped support Danica as she got into position to do her exercises. Her legs were still weak but her arms were strong now and she easily got through her first sets.
The next sets were a little harder, since Danica hated trying to move her legs in isolation but she gritted her teeth and made it through with lots of support from her dad and Michael.
“Alright, Danica. Here’s the part you really hate.”
“Aw, Mike. Do I have to?”
“I’m afraid so.” Michael kept a hand on her and turned off the pool, reaching up to get the bar for Danica to hold and helping her stand in the water. Once he was sure she was standing upright and her feet were flat, he stepped back.
“How long?”
“Want to try for three minutes and go for your personal best?”
“Three minutes?” Danica wailed.
“Um. Want me to tell you about the babies?”
“Yes!”
As Michael spoke he kept an eye on the clock and stopped abruptly. “Well that’s it for now.”
“That was three minutes?”
“Nope. It was five!”
“Five? I did five whole minutes? Dad! I did five minutes.”
Michael gave them some time to celebrate then told Danica they were going to try something different. She looked a little hesitant when Michael took off her float but was soon semi-relaxed as she floated on her back, Michael’s hand supporting her.
“Okay, Danica. What’s the last song you heard before you came in here today?”
“Dad listens to the oldies channel, like eighties stuff.”
“Ouch. Okay, it doesn’t matter what song it was. Just fix it in your mind and play it over and over again.”
It took her a little while to get the hang of it but Michael let her figure it out and once she was in the zone, he stepped back and just let the sound of the lapping water fill the room.
He brought her back gently, rubbing her hand a little. “How do you feel?”
“All floaty and relaxed.”
“Doesn’t it feel good?”
“Uh huh.”
“Good.” Michael said, noting that she was moving her legs slightly like she wasn’t even thinking about it and her father was watching it too. “You ready to get out now?”
“Okay.”
Roger helped get the sling in place and Danica was soon wrapped in a cushy robe and back in her chair with a towel wrapped around her more or less bald head.
“Hey Danica, you did great today and I have a present because I think you’re going to need it soon.” Michael got out a swim cap with NYC 2012 and the Olympic rings emblazoned on the sides. Danica took it ecstatically and immediately put it on.
“How does it look?”
“You look like a champ! And here’s Margery to help you change. I’ll see you on Thursday, right?”
Danica nodded happily and waved as she was wheeled out. Roger stayed behind for a moment, looking really happy himself.
“Michael, I’m glad you’re back. She was miserable last week with Stephanie.”
“Ah, well Stephanie’s a great PT.”
“I agree but Danica really likes you. How much do I owe you for the cap?”
“Huh? Oh. No. Um. My sponsor donated a case of them when we went up last year to tour the facility.”
Roger chuckled. “You know, I keep forgetting you’re this famous swim guy.”
“Hey, that’s the nicest thing anyone’s said to me all day.” Michael said with a grin.
&&
“Michael? Do you have a minute?”
Michael stopped as he passed Dr. Tyree’s office and ducked in. “Sure. What can I do for you?”
“I just haven’t had a chance to see you since you got back. How are you doing?”
“I got a full night’s sleep last night so I’m doing okay. My moms are staying with us along with Ian’s parents so we’ve got lots of help.”
“The babies are sleeping through the night?”
“No, not yet. Ian made me sleep in my office so I’d be okay today.” Michael said, looking faintly aggrieved. “But he promised me it’s only on Sunday nights. He gets to sleep on Saturdays. We tag team them the other nights.”
“And when do I get to see the boys?” She asked with a smile.
“We’re bringing them in the second week of November to see Dr. Callabresi. Do you want me to bring them up here?”
“No, I’ll come down because I’m sure I’ll hear that you’re here. Anyway, on to business. I know you’re going to take a break after graduation so you can continue your training but we’d like to offer you a semi-full time job starting in October of next year.”
“Semi-full time?”
“Well, you mentioned before that you want to spend time with your kids. What we had in mind was having you take patients from ten to four Monday through Friday except for when we get new interns. You’ll be doing the orientation for them so you’d have to work full time for two weeks twice a year. The money isn’t much but you’d get full health benefits and liberal leave. This is dependent on your passing the licensing exam but I don’t think that will be a problem for you. You could probably take it now and pass.”
“Wow.”
“I don’t need an answer now. I know you’ll want to talk it over with Ian and think it over yourself. Just let us know by the time you graduate. I know you’ll have many offers but hopefully you like working here enough to consider ours.”
“Many offers?”
“You’re graduating at the top of your class. The top grads always get several offers.”
“Oh. Okay. I’ll let you know as soon as possible.”
“Good and it’s good to have you back.”
&&
Michael was still in a daze when he stopped to pick up Chloe at school that afternoon but managed to engage enough to listen as she chattered about her day.
“Daddy, can I spend Friday night at Beth’s?”
“Beth? Which one is Beth?”
“She’s in my history class. She’s having a slumber party and she invited me.”
“How many girls will be there?
“Five. Beth, Dakota, Nora, Caitlyn and me. We want to try out for the field hockey team next year.”
“Oh. They’re fourth graders. What about Amanda?”
“She’s staying at her dad’s house and he already said no.”
“I thought she was at her dad’s last weekend?”
“She was. Her dad gets her every weekend now because he doesn’t have a girlfriend anymore.” Chloe said nonchalantly.
“Oh. Is Amanda okay with that?”
“She didn’t like Barbara.”
“Tell me about the other girls.”
“Beth is really good at history; her mom is a professor and her other mom is works at a museum. Dakota’s dad works at the mall and her mom works in New Jersey. Nora’s mom and dad are divorced. Her dad lives in Seattle and Nora goes there every summer but she says it’s no fun. Caitlyn lives with her dad and her step mom. She likes her step mom better than her real mom.”
“Uh huh. Will Beth’s moms be home for the slumber party?”
“Uh huh. We’re going to play games and watch a movie. Beth’s mom said we were going to have pizza for dinner and if you say it’s okay, we’re going to the mall on Saturday but I’ll be home by two.”
“Let me talk it over with Papa. Do you have Beth’s phone number so I can call her moms?”
“Uh huh. Daddy, where are we going?”
“Huh? Oh. I drove right by the house. Sorry about that.”

November 8, 2011 Philadelphia, PA
“Do we have everything?”
“Babies are freshly fed, burped and changed; we have the baby bags, stroller, parking pass, you and me. I think we’re good. Am I driving or are you driving?”
“You drive there and I’ll drive back.”
“Good enough.”
Ian got in the back seat and buckled in leaving Michael to take the wheel and carefully navigate their way to the hospital. They only had to pull over once so Ian could unbuckle and check why Jamey was fussing but after a blanket fix, they were soon pulling into the parking garage at Children’s Hospital.
“Ah, Robbie’s got the fuss now.” Ian said as they unloaded the stroller and put the two baby bags in the bin before snapping in the seats. Next Michael climbed inside and unbuckled each boy, handing him out to Ian. It only took eight minutes by Ian’s watch but it was quite a production.
“There’s got to be a better way.” Michael said as he held Robbie for a moment and tried to calm him down.
“The way I look at it, we have two options. Let’s out of this stuffy garage.” Ian said as he unlocked the stroller brakes and pushed it towards the elevator.
“Which are?” Michael asked, already adept at talking over baby fussing sounds.
“We either buy or rent a bigger vehicle or hire a limousine type service when we all go out. Don’t forget, we’re going to also have a nanny-type person in tow.”
“You want to travel in a limo?”
“No, they have other types of vehicles like mini-buses. Some even have lavatories on board which would be handy and with a driver both of us would have our hands free for the babies. A bigger vehicle for us would be a fifteen passenger van. We can’t even take all the kids in one of the SUVs right now. Chloe can’t ride in the front seat yet and we can’t expect her to take care of the babies.”
“Those fifteen passenger vans have a roll over problem.” Michael commented as he pushed the elevator call button. “And they’re ugly. Aw, Robbie. What’s the matter?”
“Give him your pinky.”
“But my hands are dirty. Can you reach a baby wipe?”
“Yes.” Ian ducked down and pulled a wipe out, swiping Michael’s finger off then tucking it in the side pocket of the bag as the doors opened and several people stepped out including a guy on crutches who paused as he went by.
“Michael?”
“Kevin? Dude! How have you been?” Michael said.
“Well, I broke my leg waterskiing in Florida. I’d shake your hand but we’re both a little busy. Is that your kid?”
“Yeah, one of them. Kevin, this is my husband Ian Thorpe. Ian, this is Kevin Morrissey; we used to hang out together in high school.” Ian nodded with a smile then shook the hand Kevin managed to free. “And this is Robbie. The other three are Harry, Jamey and Liam.”
“Dude, I can’t believe you have four kids.”
“Um. Five actually. We have a daughter who is almost ten. I heard you got married a couple of years ago?”
“Yeah, Cheryl’s upstairs actually. We just had a baby yesterday, a little girl named Morgan Renee.”
“Congratulations, dude. Is Cheryl up on seven?”
“Uh yeah. How did-?”
“I work here in the PT department. Is Cheryl up for visitors and are you coming back?”
“I’ll be back in an hour or so, I’m just going to get Cheryl some things she forgot to pack.”
“We’ll try to stop by after our appointment. Sorry to take off on you but the babies’ doctor has a tight schedule. If we miss each other, just ask one of the nurses for the phone number of the PT unit and leave me your phone number.”
Ian who had been patiently holding the elevator waved as the doors closed and exchanged a look with Michael. “You didn’t invite him to the wedding?”
“I did but he and Cheryl were in Hawaii. He’s okay but Cheryl didn’t really like me much so we lost touch.”
“Ah.” Ian said as they arrived on the third floor. “Did you know he was living here?”
“I’d heard he was in the area but I haven’t really had a chance to look him up. It’s down the next corridor on the left.”
“Robbie seems a little calmer. Do you want to put him down and get Liam or should we switch off?” Ian asked as Michael opened the door for him.
“I’ll get him. Hey Claudia.”
“Hi Michael. And you must be Ian.” The receptionist said as she stood up and leaned over the counter. “Oh, look at them. They’re even cuter than the pictures.”
“Thank you and nice to meet you. Do we need to sign in?” Ian asked as Michael put Robbie down then picked up Liam.
Claudia nodded and handed over a clipboard. “Michael already filled out the paperwork.”
“Hey babe, can you hand me the quick change bag? Liam needs a pit stop.”
“Got it.” Ian signed, retrieved the bag and handed it off.
“Thanks.” Michael disappeared into the bathroom as Claudia came around the counter to admire the babies.
Dr. Callabresi was happy to see the babies and had nothing but good things to say about the boys’ health then called in a nurse to do their immunizations.
“Doctor, we think we’ve worked out a system for this so just bear with us.” Michael said as he picked up Harry and Ian took the other boys out in the stroller. “Ian can’t bear to see them get shots and if they’re all in the room when the first one gets a shot, they’ll get very squirmy. Ready to go?”
“You’re the boss here.” Dr. Callabresi said genially as he gently swabbed Harry’s arm. The shot took only a second and Harry seemed more shocked than in pain, wailing just a little bit as Michael soothed him.
“Give me a minute than I’ll bring Robbie.”
By the time all four babies had their shots, there were several of Michael’s colleagues in the reception area including Dr. Tyree who was holding Harry.
&&
Michael pushed the button for the seventh floor and waited as the elevator rose and the doors opened. The receptionist for the floor looked up then smiled when he recognized Michael.
“Hey, I didn’t know you were working today.”
“I’m not. Ian and I brought the boys in for their first appointment. Is there a Cheryl Morrissey here?”
“Yes, in suite 14.”
“I went to high school with her and her husband. I just want to stick my head in and say hi.”
“She’s in there but don’t stay too long.”
Michael walked down the hall and knocked on the door, hearing a woman’s voice tell him to enter. He literally did stick his head in the door, “Hi Cheryl.”
“Oh. Michael Phelps. What are you doing here?” Cheryl asked with an expression like she’d just stepped in something unpleasant.
Michael resisted the urge to roll his eyes, some things never changed. “I work here and I was bringing my boys in for their well baby appointment. I ran into Kevin downstairs and told him I’d pop in and say congratulations.”
“I guess you’d better come in.” Cheryl said with a limited amount of grace.
“No, it’s okay. You had a big day yesterday and I’m not supposed to stay long. Just tell Kevin I’ll catch up with him later.” Michael gave her a cheery wave and stepped back outside.
Michael stopped at the reception desk to leave his contact information for Kevin to find one of the nurses manning the desk.
“Hey Aileen, what happened to Charlie?”
“He told me he wanted a quick break but now I know why. He’s probably down on three looking at your babies. The dirty rat didn’t even tell me you were here.”
“We’ll be back next month. Hey, can you give this note to Kevin Morrissey, he’s Cheryl’s husband. She’s in 14.”
“Oh sure. Friends of yours?”
“I went to high school with them. Um. Don’t take the message into Cheryl; I don’t want to disturb her.”
“No problem.”
&&
Michael got back on the third floor to find that even more people were crowded around the babies and Ian was looking a little frantic.
“Hey guys. We’ve got to get the boys home. Put down the children and step away from the strollers.”
Amid the laughter, the babies were reluctantly returned and strapped in and Michael could see the little line ease between Ian’s eyes.
After a round of congratulations, they were allowed to get in the elevator and swiftly found themselves back at the car. Ian didn’t waste any time getting the boys in their infant carriers and Michael barely at time to get his own seat belt on as Ian started the car and pulled out.
“What happened?”
“I’ll tell you at home.”
“I guess we’re not going to the grocery store?” Michael asked a minute or two later.
“No.”
“Okay. Baby, pull over.”
Ian found a spot and did so. “Who’s fussy?”
“You are.” Michael unbuckled and got in the front passenger seat. “Ian, you’re upset about something, you’re tired and the babies are all asleep. Why don’t you sit with them and take a couple of minutes? I know we’ll talk when we get home but you need a break.”
“Am I driving unsafely? Is that what you’re saying?”
“No, you always drive safely but your eyebrow is twitching.” Michael said, reaching a hand out and gently running his fingers over the spot. Ian grimaced then sighed.
“You’re right. I feel like I need a nap.”
“A nap sounds good but burping you is totally out of the question.”
Ian chuckled ruefully as he got up and moved into the second row of seats. “They are sleeping rather well, aren’t they?”
“I think they like the car.”
Michael drove them straight home and as they were unloading the boys, he convinced Ian to go for a swim.
“But the boys-?”
“The moms and Ken are here. We have a pool in the back yard and you haven’t been swimming in almost a month. No wonder you’re so cranky, you’re having withdrawal pains.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. Now go see if you can find your swimsuit or if it’s been turned into dust.”
“Ha ha.”
&&
Forty minutes later, Ian was swimming along. It wasn’t a terrific pace and he certainly wasn’t setting any records but as the ‘laps’ passed he felt the tension ease from his body and once again, marveled that Michael always seemed to know what he needed. When Michael showed up an hour or so later with bottles of water and two sandwiches, Ian was feeling human again.
“Feeling better?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Move over so I can get it.” Michael said as he set down the tray, took of his robe and flip flops and slid in, turning on the spa jets before settling over by Ian. “Are you hungry?”
“Starving.”
“Then I have a turkey sandwich with two cheeses and spicy mustard on rock wheat bread all for the price of a kiss. No extra charge for the sprouts.”
Ian paid the fee with a grin. “Thank you love. You take good care of me.”
“I sort of fell down on the job today. I’m sorry I left you alone with all those people.”
“How did-?”
“I knew most of them but you didn’t and they were holding the babies. That was bound to give you the willies.”
“They were medical people and I’m sure it was okay but you’re right. I didn’t want to be rude but it made me uncomfortable.”
“Then repeat after me. ‘Its flu season and we don’t want a lot of people handling the babies.’”
“That will work?”
“Sure because it’s the truth and they are our boys. We don’t even have to give an excuse. What else happened?”
“I overheard something and it shouldn’t have bothered me but it did.”
“You found out about the raging affair I’m having with Pieter?”
Ian laughed appreciatively then sobered. “No, I heard a guy talking about how there are millions of real married couples who want babies and isn’t it a shame that those two fags have four.”
“Let me guess. It was a short overweight bald guy.”
“I couldn’t see who it was. Someone else told him to shut up or eat floor and I didn’t hear him anymore.”
“It had to be Alf Mason. He’s in dentistry. Did he add the part that gays should not be allowed to raise kids?”
“You know him?”
“He’ll get off elevators when I get on. He moves if I sit down less than three tables away from him in the cafeteria. We were at a mental health lecture and he asked the presenter if homosexuality was catching.”
“And you have to work with him?”
“He’s in a different department and although he’s a homophobic jerk, he’s entitled to his opinions. I try really hard to find him amusing and I’ll admit that I’ve even purposefully sat at the next table just to watch him skitter away like a rat. Eat your cheesecake.”
Ian picked up the fork and poked the red sauce on the dessert suspiciously. “Are those cherries?”
“Pomegranate.”
“I love pomegranates!” Ian exclaimed as he took a big bite.
“I know and no, I didn’t make it. Your parents had lunch downtown today and they stopped at the pastry shop on Walnut. They nabbed the last one.”
“Go parents!”
Michael waited for Ian to finish then pulled Ian over onto his lap. “How are you doing?”
“Now? I’m much better. I’m sorry I snapped at you.”
“It’s okay and I promise that when we’re out with the boys, I won’t leave you alone. We can run interference for each other.”
“Thank you and you weren’t gone that long. Was Matt not there?”
“You mean Kevin? No he wasn’t back yet and I wasn’t sticking around to talk to Cheryl.”
“What did you do to make her dislike you so much?”
“I dated her friend for a couple of weeks.”
“Sara?”
“No, Renee and I was sort of a jerk to her. Okay, I was really a jerk. I dumped her in the middle of the Spring Fling my senior year.”
“You cad!”
“I know and Renee did forgive me by graduation but Cheryl can hold a grudge.”
“Wait. The date forgave you but the date’s friend still has a problem?”
“Well, I also went to middle school with Cheryl and she’s never forgiven me for the Kool-Aid episode in fifth grade. Man, she was purple for three weeks.”
“What did you do?”
“Science Fair. She made one of those fake volcanoes. Kevin thought it would be funny to substitute Kool-Aid for the powder she was using to make it erupt. Well the tubing clogged and when she leaned in to see what was wrong- boom!”
“Hang on. Kevin did it?”
“Yeah but he said I did it and he liked her so I never ratted him out.”
“So she’s blamed you all these years yet she married the guy who actually did it.”
“I’m sure he told her.”
“But what if he didn’t?”
“Then we’ll just revel in the irony from a distance.”
“But she was mean to you.” Ian said, sliding his arms around Michael’s neck. “I don’t like people who are mean to you.”
“I can take it. Speaking of taking it. What do you think about Dr. Tyree’s job offer?
“Do you like working there?”
“Yeah, I do but the best part is that I don’t have to leave too early in morning and I’ll be home by four thirty every night.”
“Are you still interested in doing the day camp?”
“Yeah but we’ve all got to agree on where it’s going to be, find a piece of property and all that jazz. And for a subject change, why are you resisting the idea of a nanny?”
“I’m not.”
“You are. I know you are totally capable of taking care of the boys on your own but you’re exhausted. Your mom and dad are pitching in but they’re not young and they’re exhausted too. Having a nanny doesn’t mean you can’t do it, it just means you’ll have time to enjoy doing it instead of having it all pass in a haze.”
Ian hunched down and tucked his head into Michael’s neck. “I just want to be a good dad.”
“You’re a fantastic dad; the boys know your voice and you’re the only one who can get Jamey to take a bath without all the drama not to mention how much Chloe loves you.” Michael said as he stroked Ian’s back.
“She doesn’t love me right now.”
“Because you said no to her holding a slumber party? She doesn’t hate you, she’s just disappointed but there’s no way six little girls can be quiet enough for the babies not to mention your parents.
“But I didn’t even tell her I’d think it over or talk about it with you.”
“Do you really feel that bad about it?”
“You didn’t see her face.”
“Um. You know, Grant and Pieter are going to New York the weekend after Thanksgiving. I could ask them if the girls could camp out in their guest room once the boys are in bed; that should make sure everyone sleeps even if the girls don’t and I can sleep in Grant and Pieter’s room to make sure they don’t run off to Mexico on us.”
“Oh. That’s a great idea.”
“Good because Pieter and Grant already agreed and you can tell Chloe tonight.”
“Michael.”
“Ian.”
“I really love you.”
“That’s good to hear since I love you too.”
Ian sighed and snuggled up to Michael. “I’m sorry I haven’t been in the mood lately.”
“Well you’re taking care of the babies, Chloe, the house, your parents and me. Not that I don’t miss getting busy between the sheets with you but something has to give.”
“You do more for me than I do for you.”
“I think you’re wrong. Who makes sure all my school stuff makes it back in my briefcase and my laptop is charged? Who is that guy who puts snacks in my swim bag? And that must be a ghost who keeps track of my practices and does my entry paperwork and makes sure the electric blanket is on before I get in bed on a cold night?”
“That last part is purely self-preservation.”
“That may be true but you could just make me move my feet.”
“I’ve gotten used to the blocks of ice you call feet. I suppose a nanny wouldn’t be so bad. I miss you too.” Ian said, sharing a kiss with Michael before laying his head on Michael’s shoulder.
