Chapter 27
At breakfast Margaret giggled a bit when Gerry tried to explain, with little detail, what he and Ann had done the night before. “Oh Gerry,” she said, “don’t forget that today is Emma’s birthday. Your brother’s are coming over tonight to celebrate.”
“Shit!” Gerry exclaimed.
“Gerard,” his mother scolded, “watch your language.”
“Well it’s a good thing he was going to take me to Glasgow today,” Ann said laughing.
“You two better get going,” Margaret said shooing them away from the table. “Dinner is at 6:30.”
While they were on their way to go shopping, Gerry looked deep in thought. “What’s wrong?” Ann asked.
“I don’t know how to shop for a four year old. How am I supposed to know what she likes?”
“Lucky for you I was her age once. Leave everything to me.”
Their first stop was a show store. Ann bought a pair of sparkly ballet flats. “Why do you need another pair of shoes?” Gerry asked.
“You’ll see. I just hope I have enough time.”
“Enough time for what?”
“Stop asking questions. We still have to go to the toy store and a craft or office supply store.”
While at the toy store, Ann helped Gerry pick out two of the cutest Barbies ever. Ann also managed to find the softest teddy bear in the entire store. When they got to the craft store, Ann bought colored paper, glue, scissors, and markers.
“What’s all that for?” Margaret asked when she walked into Gerry’s room to find Ann on the floor with everything spread out in front of her.
“I would love to tell you,” Ann replied, “but I am running out of time. Could you do me a little favor?”
“Sure sweetie.”
“Could you make sure that no one comes up here? I need to hurry and it is easier if Gerry is busy doing something else.”
“Say no more dear. Gerry doesn’t know it yet but he is going to help me put the decorations up. So, like I said before, dinner is at 6:30 and everyone will be here around 6:00. Margaret smiled as she walked out of the room. Before the door was shut Ann could hear Gerry being scolded for leaving his sock in the hallway.
By the time Ann had finished he gift and wrapped Gerry’s, it was a quarter after five. She rushed to shower, do her hair, and get dressed. She walked down the stairs just when everyone was walking in the door. Emma couldn’t have been more excited. “Is all this for me?” she asked.
“Well of course it is love,” Gerry said giving her a hug. Just then Margaret came out of the kitchen to announce that dinner was ready. That night dinner was a more casual affair. It consisted of grilled cheese sandwiches and Hawaiian Punch, Emma’s favorites. When the cake was brought out, “Happy Birthday” was sung and candles blown out.
“Mummy, look!” Emma said after all the candles were out. “I blew them out all by myself. I didn’t need any help.”
“I know,” Nancy relpied, “and I am very proud of you.”
“Is it time for presents?” Emma asked when everyone had finished their cake.
“Why yes it is my dear,” Douglas replied hugging her. Emma jumped up and ran into the living room like it was a race. “Well I guess we better hurry,” he said as everyone laughed and followed her.
All of the adults laughed even more when Emma tore through the wrapping paper of her presents. From her grandma she received a hand knitted sweater, a doll, and a book about penguins. Her mum and dad got her the Little Mermaid on DVD, some clothes, and a trip to London. From Adrian, she got a paint set and some coloring books. “Uncle Gerwe” got her a beautiful Barbie with a wide array of clothes.
When Emma had thanked everyone for their gifts, Ann got up and said, “I almost forgot. I left your present upstairs.” She ran up the stairs and returned with what looked like a shoe box. “Emma, do you remember yesterday when I told you about the houses I would make for my Barbie’s?” Emma nodded that she did. “Well I made you one. Happy birthday, Emma.” She opened the box to reveal a simply decorated room with a bunch of smaller pieces on the bottom. “I made a few different rugs and pictures for you to hang on the walls. I also included the pattern for new wall paper.”
“This is the best present ever,” Emma said as she ran to hug Ann.
“Ann,” Nancy said pulling her aside, “you didn’t have to do that. I mean it must have taken you hours.”
“It was my pleasure. Really I did it for you and Doug. If she makes a bunch of those, you two will never have to buy her a Barbie Dream House.”
“Thank God. Those things are huge.”
“Plus they aren’t as cool as I remember them being. I had a friend that had one that had an elevator in it.”
After a few hours of playing with all her new toys, Emma began to get tired. Doug and Nancy decided it was time to leave. Adrian, Ann, and Gerry were having too much fun talking so Gerry said he would drive Adrian home later. After Margaret went to bed, Adrian and Ann broke out a bottle of scotch. “Gerry, come play poker with us and since you're not drinking, you have to strip,” Ann said with a smirk. The look on Gerry's face was priceless. Ann knew he was a horrible card player. Apparently so was Adrian. Not more than an hour after they began playing, all the scotch was gone because of Adrian and his lack of card playing skills. The boys were so bad that soon after the liquor was gone, they were both necked. “I guess it’s time to call it a night,” Ann said basking in her ability to win at cards.
“All I have to say,” Adrian said getting up to put his clothes back on, “is thank God we weren’t playing for money.”
“If that were the case,” Gerry said as he put his shirt back on, “not only would we still be playing, but I think Ms. Poker Queen would have eventually cleaned us out.”
After the boys got dressed, Gerry took Ann up to bed. Ann was a lot drunker than anyone had realized, so luckily she just passed out. “Adrian,” Gerry began as he looked at his watch, “it is almost three in the morning, so I think you should just stay her ans sleep on the couch or something.”
“Good idea little brother. You know what else is a good idea?”
“I’m sure I have no idea what you mean.”
“Keep a good hold on that one. She’s a keeper.”
“Good night,” Gerry said as his face turned red and he walked up the stairs.
The next morning Margaret got quite a shock when she woke up and not only found her son passed out on the couch, but also two empty bottles of scotch in the kitchen. ‘So this is what I’ve missed having an empty house?’ she thought.
That day, Gerr showed Ann all the sights including where he had filmed Dear Frankie and where he went to collage. They also drove up to see where Braveheart was filmed. Before they had left the house, Ann had packed a picnic lunch for them. As they were driving to Robert the Bruce’s castle, they passed a small lake. “Why don’t we eat here?” Gerry suggested.
“Great idea,” Ann replied as Gerry pulled the car off the road. “My tummy was kinda rumbling a bit back there.”
“So was mine.”
It was typical Scottish weather, a bit on the chilly side and cloudy. As Ann began to throw out the blanket and set up the food, Gerry grabbed her and laid a soft romantic kiss on her. Just at that moment, a ray of sunshine broke through the clouds and shown right on them. When the kiss was over, Gerry spoke. “Until now I thought Scotland was the most beautiful thing on earth. Now I realize it pales in comparison to you.”
“I could live here forever,” Ann said as a tear ran down her cheek.
As they ate their lunch, Gerry told Ann more about him growing up and all the crazy things he did. “Tell me more about the ‘Glasgow Kiss’. I keep seeing it on your fan sites,” Ann asked. Gerry proceeded to tell her about that and about his band. “How come you never told me you were in a band?”
“You never asked.”
“Well that’s because you don’t strike me as a guy who would be in a band.”
“At one point I was just the back-up singer. Then the chick left and I took over the vocals. After that It got so crazy we had to hire security for a few of the gigs.”
“Goodness. I had no idea.”
As they were packing up the car to head back to Margaret’s for dinner, they noticed a small house behind some trees. They got into the car and as they were passing it, Gerry pulled into the driveway. “What’s wrong?” Ann asked.
“I gotta pee. I’ll be right back.” Gerry walked up to the door and knocked.
An old man came to the door. “May I help you?” he asked.
“Yes actually. I was wondering if I could use your restroom.”
“Why of course lady.”
“My girlfriend and I were just picnicking down by the water.”
“I noticed.”
“Oh I didn’t know that was part of you land.”
“It’s okay. It’s nice to see young people in love. Well here it is.”
Gerry did his business. When he got out he walked into the front room to thanks the old man. “I had a question, do you know of any property in this area for sale?”
“No, but I have been thinking about selling this and moving in with my daughter. She has been after me ever since my wife died a few years back.”
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.”
Finally, after what seemed like forever, Ann saw Gerry come out of the little cottage. He shook the man’s hand and had the most ridiculous grin on his face. “What was all that about?”
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
“You know I have no patience.”
“Yes and that is why I love you. Well that and your cute little bum.”
For the next four days, Gerry and Ann traveled around Scotland. He took her to get a hand woven scarf of her family’s tartan. They also stayed at a tiny bed and breakfast way up in the highlands. There were a few places they went that even Gerry had never seen before. Every dinner that Margaret cooked was better than the one before.
By the night before they were to leave for London, Emma was acting like it was the end of the world. “But you can't leave,” she kept saying.
“Emma, don’t worry,” Ann said. “I’ll come back.”
“Darling,” Gerry said, “I have a feeling we will be spending a lot more time here.”
Ann looked at him and saw that smirk she had seen at the cottage plastered across his face. “What are you talking about?” she asked.
“You’ll see.” Ann saw the same look on everyone else’s face.
‘What the hell is he doing?’ Ann thought as they went to bed that night. “Remind me what I decided to schedule our flight at six in the morning.”
“Because you wanted to see the sun rise over London.”
“Oh yeah. Now I remember.”
