Chapter 28:
Notes: So this has nothing to do with the story, but it made me laugh and figured y’all would enjoy the humor. So my best friend knows about my love for Kelly and Carrie. (I get constantly teased for it…) I guess I should mention that my voicemail greeting is actually Kelly saying to leave a message. Anyway. Last night my BFF leaves me this message: “Hi Kelly Clarkson, this is Carrie Underwood. Will you have sex with me? We can tape it and send it to [me].” It happened as I was working on this story! LOL. So, is there some sort of 12 step program I should look into? SO! Back to the story…

Kelly made a mad dash from the bathroom as she could hear her phone going off. She jumped on the bed, her towel falling, as she stretched to reach her phone on the nightstand.
“Hi,” she panted.
“Well, hello,” Carrie laughed. “You alright,” she asked hearing the heavy breathing.
“Oh, yeah. Sorry,” Kelly sat up. “I had to run from the shower.”
“So,” the blonde whispered. “You mean to tell me…”
Kelly laughed. “Yes. I’m naked,” she drawled, knowing it would make her girlfriend giggle.
Carrie’s eyes widened. “Oooh. Not fair,” she whined as her mind drifted to the last time they’d been together.
“A week to go, babe,” Kelly could tell where her mind had wandered. Truth was, she had the same thought. “ Anyway,” she cleared her throat. “How was your show?”
“Oh, it was good,” Carrie readjusted her pillow as she leaned back in her bed. “We brought a little girl up to sing with me.”
“Aww,” Kelly gushed. “I bet that was cute.”
Carrie chuckled. “The audience thought so. She was shy, though. But I can’t blame her. Heck, I still get nervous.” She always had a fear of tripping or buttons coming undone, but her biggest fear was forgetting her words.
“I know. But you know, you’ve got nothing to worry about. They’re all there to support you. I mean, they came to see you. I guarantee you can talk about anything and no one would mind.”
Carrie sighed. “I guess. Sometimes, I feel kinda self-conscious, though.”
“Aw. Nonsense,” Kelly reassured her. “If you mess up, just laugh…they’ll just think you’re funny and laugh with you.”
“I love you,” Carrie whispered. “You always know how to make me feel better.”
Kelly walked up to grab her towel. “I love you too, Care. And I’m just here for ya.”
“Yeah, so 6 more days?”
Kelly smiled. “Yep. And I’m counting every hour until I can see you.”
“Me too,” she smiled.
“So, how’s your sister?”
“Oh,” Carrie’s tone changed. “Well, um, funny you should ask.”
“Yeah,” the Texan could sense something was up as she felt her girlfriend’s mood turn slightly serious.
“I told her,” Carrie breathed.
“Uh, you mean,” Kelly asked surprised. She wasn’t upset, but she surely didn’t expect Carrie to go and tell a family member that suddenly. “Details please.”
“Ok,” Carrie chuckled knowing by Kelly’s tone that she was in shock. “I really wasn’t planning on it, babe. I mean, you called and she was sitting next to me. I guess, she could read from my actions that I was on the phone with someone pretty special…”
Kelly sighed at her cuteness. “Uh huh.”
“And when I hung up, she asked. I thought about putting it off, but I know my sister. She would’ve kept on asking until I told her. Besides, if I hadn’t said anything, it would’ve made it seem like I’m ashamed or something. And I’m definitely not. I love you, Kel, and I want the people I care about to know that.”
“Aw! Care…are you sure? I mean, I haven’t even told Alyssa or Mom yet. As much as I would love for our relationship to not be a huge deal, it kinda is.”
Carrie laughed. “Yes, it is a big deal. But I love you. That’s all I need to know. I mean, I’m not saying I want to hold a press conference and announce it or anything.”
Kelly giggled. “Aw, no People cover,” she joked.
“Kel,” Carrie shook her head, laughing. “Funny, but no. Granted, we’ll have to deal with that at some point, but not yet. In the meantime, I just want to share you and my happiness with my family. I mean, is that ok?” She grew slightly nervous as it hit her that she could be suddenly making assumptions about where they stood.
“Babe, you know it is. I’m behind you a hundred percent. For the record, I do want to tell my mom and sister soon. I just figure that I can do that after the tour. Once we can have a sit down talk and be together as a family. I don’t wanna be all over the phone, ‘Oh, I’m dating Carrie…yes, Carrie Underwood. Ok, gotta go sing now. Love ya.’ You know?”
Carrie reached for her pillow. “I know, babe. I trust your judgment of when the right time to tell them will be. Honestly, I’m not planning on telling anyone else yet. I just hate lying and she asked.”
“Honey, don’t apologize. You have every right to share.”
“Thanks,” her voice softened.
“So, like, how did she react,” Kelly finally asked the question that had been on her mind. “Should I get another bodyguard?”
Carrie smiled. “Well, no. I mean, she thinks it’s wrong. Which, I’m not surprised. We come from a small town. People don’t think about stuff like this cause it doesn’t happen.”
Kelly frowned. “What, people don’t fall in love in Oklahoma?”
Carrie sighed sadly. “You know what I mean, babe. All I can ask her is to deal and try to accept it. And she is trying. After the show, she asked about you. I shared our ritual of nightly calls. I told her how much I love you, how you make me feel. It was so nice to share that…”
“I’m glad, babe.”
“And I think the more she hears about us, the better things will get. I told her she’ll like you when she meets you.”
“Wow, no pressure there,” Kelly teased.
“It’ll be fine.”
“So, is she still gonna be with you when I get there?”
Carrie frowned. “You know, I’m not sure. I mean, she’s staying for a few days, but I know she’s gotta get back to her kids. They’re with Mom.”
“Ah. Well, tell her I look forward to meeting her.”
“You will,” Carrie yawned.
“Do I need to let you go,” Kelly asked yawning herself.
“But…”
“Care, you had a long day. We’ll talk tomorrow, ok?”
“Of course. I’ll call you over breakfast. I love you.”
Kelly smiled. “I love you too…and I will see you soon.”
=========
“When is she supposed to be here,” Carrie asked as she adjusted the mic pack on her waistband, bouncing on her toes.
“Relax, would you,” Matt answered playfully.
“Pre-show jitters. You know how it is. I was sort of hoping she would be here to make them go away.”
Matt shook his head. “Sorry. Jason texted me earlier. They had some bad weather leaving, but they’ll be here as soon as they can. I guess they will get here by the time the show’s over.”
“Good,” Carrie smiled. “Ok. Let’s get this show on the road!”
She opened the door to her dressing room as her band walked in for their pre-show prayer. Everyone joined hands and formed a circle in the middle of the room. “God,” Carrie spoke up as they bowed their heads. “Guide us tonight and bless us and everyone in this arena. Help us give everyone a good show and make sure to watch over us when we leave. Amen.”
“Let’s go,” her tour manager yelled.
Carrie stood in the riser, she could hear the crowd cheering louder as the countdown flashed on the screen. When it finally reached zero, the band kicked in and began the opening chords to Flat on The Floor. She took a deep breath as the riser lifted her onto the stage. That moment always gave her goose bumps.
She began the song and started scanning the audience. She moved all over the stage and walkway, waving as she made eye contact with the audience. As she finished the song, she glanced over to the sound board. Matt would always sit there and smile as he was the familiar face in the crowd she always asked for. She couldn’t hide the smiled that formed as she looked next to Matt.
There she was. Kelly had snuck into the arena to surprise her. She shook her head knowingly as Kelly smiled at her and waved.
Carrie chuckled quietly at how appropriate it was that the band began playing Some Hearts. As she started to sing, she stared right at Kelly before moving around on the stage. She did make sure to hold her gaze, singing. “Some hearts just get lucky sometimes...”
Kelly couldn’t help the huge smile plastered all over her face as she stared at her girlfriend taking such command of the stage. She continued watching the show as Carrie dazzled the crowd with her amazing vocals.
“So, we’re gonna do something a little different,” Carrie spoke to the audience. “My band and I have been rehearsing a song I haven’t done live before….” The cheering grew louder as she continued. “Tonight seems like a great night for it,” she quickly glanced at Kelly. “I hope y’all enjoy some Jo De Messina. For you kids in the audience, this one’s called Because You Love Me.”
The Texan brought a hand to her face as she shook her head. “What is this,” she asked Matt.
“Oh,” he shrugged. “See, this is why she kept insisting in knowing exactly where you were and if you’d be here in time for the show.”
Kelly’s jaw dropped, as she didn’t know what to say.
Matt just smiled. “Surprise.”
Kelly stood there, her eyes glued to Carrie. There may have been thousands of people sharing that moment, but it didn’t matter. She knew Carrie was singing to her and it only made her smile.
The blonde kept her eyes directly on Kelly as she sang:
“And now that you’re in my life…Oh, I’m so glad I’m alive…cause you showed me the way…And I know now how good it can be…Because you love me…”
As the song ended, the crowd erupted into huge screams and applause. She stood smiling and waving for a few seconds as the band geared up for the next song.
“That’s the last song before the encore,” Matt spoke in Kelly’s ear. “Do you want to stay for that?”
She peeled her eyes from Carrie and turned to Matt. “Is she still doing Paradise City?”
He laughed. “Of course.”
“Oh, then I’m staying. We can leave before the last song, right?”
“Yeah,” he answered unclipping his two-way. “Just, we should get out quickly after that.”
“Deal,” she smiled, turning back to Carrie as she finished her song and the lights dimmed. Once the song ended, Kelly zipped up her hoodie and pulled her baseball cap even lower, hoping to go unnoticed.
“Come on,” Matt guided her as a security guard cleared the way for them.
Kelly beamed as she finally made her way backstage and into Carrie’s dressing room. She knocked nervously, dying to finally hug her.
“Oh, my god, Care,” she wrapped her arms around her as soon as she saw her. “That was amazing,” she smiled.
“Thanks,” she pulled back as she noticed that Matt had closed the door to give them some privacy.
“You know,” Kelly reached her hand to Carrie’s cheek, sighing as she was finally able to touch her. “I’ve missed you like crazy,” she whispered as she closed the distance between them, capturing Carrie’s lips with hers.
