After her interview was over she went back to the marquee to find her band, and found them all sat with their buddies Slipknot spread across four couches, with Jamie on a single chair just a little way back under a blanket Remi had provided. She needed to go back to the hotel to sleep in a proper bed, and where was her father to come and do just that like he had promised? Still AWOL.
‘I think you should drink this’ she suddenly heard Jim say behind her. She turned to see him dunk a shot glass of baileys and Jameson’s straight into a pint of Guinness. It had been years since she’d done an IRA car bomb, and took it from her friend with a smile.
‘Am I to down it in one?’ she asked, licking a bit of the foam off the head of the Guinness, not knowing how much of a cold yet pleasant shiver had run through Jim as he’d watched her do it.
‘Absofuckinglutely’ replied Jim, folding his arms and watching as she shrugged and began to sink the drink, finishing it in about six gulps and catching the shot glass impressively between her teeth at the end, making her friends clap and cheer.
‘You’re too talented with that mouth of yours Barry’ said Jim quietly in her ear, resting a hand on her shoulder as he took the glass from her and then walked past. She closed her eyes and took a breath for a moment, feeling her cheeks flush and her heart rate quicken before rubbing her thumb over her wedding ring, reminding herself of the word ‘No’ firmly. But time had done nothing but make that man even sexier than when she had first met him, and she really couldn’t help but notice it. Stefan was gorgeous, but looking at him didn’t make her heart hammer off her ribcage like it just had then.
An hour later, and finally Stefan showed up. Meaning she could finally begin drinking as the vodka red bull Corey had given her that morning and the IRA car bomb were all she had drank that day.
‘Where the fuck have you been all fucking day?’ Jade fumed, getting up out of her seat between Jo and Corey and taking Stefan’s hand to lead him away to a quiet corner.
‘I was with my friends, what’s wrong with that?’ said Stefan with a shrug.
‘What’s wrong with that? Your daughter needed to go to bed about an hour ago and you said you’d be back to take her. Unless you didn’t notice too you have the fucking hotel room keys on you so I couldn’t even take her back, so go now Stefan’ said Jade firmly.
‘I’m staying with my friends, you go’ he said, looking her right in the eye in challenge.
‘We agreed Stefan, I’ve got friends here I haven’t seen for years, and the people you are hanging out with you saw less than three months ago when we were in Norway so quit being so goddamned selfish and take Jamie back to the hotel’ said Jade, storming off over to where Jamie was lay and scooping her up gently into her arms.
‘Here, I believe they call this responsibility. Spend some time with her for the first fucking time today Stefan. Sid’s seen more of her than you have’ said Jade, kissing a sleeping Jamie atop her head and passing her into Stefan’s arms, glaring at her husband as she walked back over to her friends and continued to enjoy herself long after he had left.
‘Have this’ Corey said, ambling over with yet another plastic pint glass filled with vodka redbull.
‘Dude how much vodka is in these exactly? I’m starting to taste less redbull with everyone you give me!’ said Jade as she gulped back her drink.
‘Well between you, me and Craig we’ve finished about three bottles’ said Corey with a smile before sitting back down again next to Jo and continuing to harass her about her new boyfriend, Stefan’s fellow Nordic friend and tattoo artist Jan Solberg who had recently moved to London to set up his new tattoo shop. Jade smiled, suddenly figuring why her legs felt a little wobbly. She decided to go off by herself and find a quiet spot to smoke a joint and ended up sat on top of a hill still in the back stage area watching her godfather’s set in the dark to enjoy a bit of alone time. Pretty soon, she found someone tall, dark and handsome arrive at her side and then take the joint from her, but his presence was a welcome one.
‘I can’t believe you went for a smoke and didn’t bring me with you. I’m hurt’ he said, sticking his bottom lip out and then smiling at her.
‘I just fancied some alone time, but I don’t mind you crashing that at all so sit’ said Jade, noticing Jim wobble slightly and then sit down with a bump. He was still under the influence of a lot of alcohol, and as he sat and watched her in the darkness, her beautiful face illuminated by the stage lights there were a million things he wanted to say passing through his mind, but he just settled on one.
‘You know when I told you you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen, well that still stands you know. You look amazing’ he said, passing her the joint back as he idly picked a stray strand of material on the long combat shorts he wore.
‘Thank you, you look pretty good yourself you know. Anyway I meant to ask you earlier, what happened to your girl? I saw her storm off the bus this morning and that was the last I saw of her’ said Jade, taking a puff on her joint and holding it in her lungs while she waited for a reply.
‘Well let’s just say it really was the last you will see of her. I finished it earlier on, she’s been annoying the shit out of me for months now and today I just knew I really couldn’t stand any more of it. Some say it might be harsh to finish with her and expect her to make her way back to Iowa by herself, but I say she should have thought of that before she turned from a nice girl into a paranoid idiot I couldn’t deal with anymore’ said Jim with a shrug. Jade nodded.
‘Well, as long as you’re happy big guy’ he said, giving his arm a squeeze.
‘I’m definitely happier to be a single man again; which is how I’m staying for a long time’ Jim confessed. They then sat silently, passing a joint to and fro between them, Jade rolling another as they watched Ozzy and his band belt out ‘Crazy Train’, quietly singing along and feeling a little sad it was the last time Ozzy would be playing there. Well, that’s what he was saying for now, she laughed quietly as she thought back to how many times Sabbath had broken up over the years only to reform then split again.
‘So, is everything with you and Stefan okay? I saw you having a bit of an altercation earlier before he took Jamie back’ said Jim suddenly after thinking on it for some time.
‘Yeah we’re good, he’s just thoughtless sometimes. He forgets that I still have so many more work commitments than he does, and yet I’m still the one who spends the most time with Jamie if the three of us go out like we did today. Don’t get me wrong he’s a wonderful father, but he just doesn’t understand I need time to myself, and time with my friends too. Plus you and Corey are here so he’s a bit pissed about that’ said Jade, lighting the freshly rolled joint in her hand and lying back on the grass, listening to the song ‘Walk on Water’ come filtering through the huge PA system.
‘And why would that be?’ said Jim, raising a single eyebrow as he lay back too, propping his head up on his hand as he leant on his elbow.
‘Because he knows you both watch him like a hawk for any sign of him slipping up so you can both can his ass about it’ said Jade with a little giggle. She thought it was pretty humorous her husband was a little scared of her friends.
‘I’d never lay a finger on the man; both boots and both fists if he ever hurt you maybe, but never a finger’ said Jim, stoned laughter echoing up from the pit of his stomach as he and Jade both had a few moments to snigger and giggle.
‘He knows how to handle himself, I mean he’s a big guy but he just hates the fact that there will always be people who are, on a certain level closer to me than he is. You amongst other friends are proof of that. I think he thinks I should be seeing less of everyone now we’re married’ then said Jade.
‘How is it being married? I always wondered if it would feel different’ said Jim.
‘It makes it a fuckside harder to walk away, that’s for sure’ said Jade with a slight sigh.
‘You thinking of leaving him then?’ asked Jim.
‘No, no of course I’m not. I’m referring to being able to get up and go off for a few days by yourself without having anyone to answer to’ said Jade, picking a strand of grass at her feet.
‘So he still makes you happy then? The thoughtless side not being taken into consideration?’ asked Jim, lighting a cigarette. The weed was making his beer washed stomach feel slightly sick so he decided to change to non class c smoking materials.
‘Everyone has their flaws, shit I know I can be hell on high heels sometimes. But yes, he makes me really happy, very loved’ replied Jade, blowing a cloud of bluish smoke into the darkness.
‘Yeah but you’re worth it though, and you aren’t as bad as you think you are either. Some of the things you’ve told me Stefan moans at you about in the past are things I’ve never even noticed’ said Jim as he sat up. Jade weighed up the odds in her drunken head of what she said next before she said it, not quite sure if she even should as the words came out of her mouth.
‘He just doesn’t know me like you do, and I don’t think he ever will’ she said honestly.
‘I agree, I know no one will ever know you like I do. Or care about you as much as I do either’ said Jim, reaching out and taking her hand. And there it was, the very words she’d needed to hear six years too late. And as he squeezed her hand Jade closed her eyes briefly and saw Rita on the porch telling her what Dime had kept to himself for so long, then saw her and him sat on the edge of that fountain in Prague, just looking at each other and smiling. She then saw herself standing at the altar to Stefan on their wedding day, and her hand let go of his as she stood up.
‘You’re wonderful, one day one lucky woman will know that too’ she said, kissing him atop his head and walking off back down the hill.
‘If she was listening she already knows’ he said quietly as he watched her run a hand through her long black hair and disappear beyond the hill. She walked along with her emotions doing a few somersaults, until finally arriving at the Kerrang! tent and just sitting outside it on the ground smoking a cigarette alone. Listening to the song ‘It’s been a while’ by Staind playing inside the tent Jade listened to the lyrics, and as much as she tried not to thought back on her time with Jim, and how she had felt at hearing what he said to her up on the hill. Lip syncing to the words Jade felt someone sit down on the other side of the tent and press their back to hers, the music playing louder...................
It's been a while
Since I could hold my head up high
and it's been a while
Since I first saw you
It's been a while
since I could stand on my own two feet again
and it's been a while
since I could call you
But everything I can't remember as fucked up as it may seem
the consequences that I've rendered
I've stretched myself beyond my means
It's been a while
since I could say that I wasn't addicted and
It's been a while
Since I could say I love myself as well and
It's been a while
Since I've gone and fucked things up just like I always do
It's been a while
But all that shit seems to disappear when I’m with you
But everything I can't remember as fucked up as it may seem
the consequences that I've rendered
I've gone and fucked things up again
Why must I feel this way?
just make this go away
just one more peaceful day
Its been awhile
Since I could look at myself straight
and it's been awhile
since I said I’m sorry
It's been awhile
Since I've seen the way the candles light your face
It's been awhile
But I can still remember just the way you taste
But everything I can't remember as fucked up as it may seem
I know it's me I cannot blame this on my father
he did the best he could for me
It's been a while
Since I could hold my head up high
and it's been a while since I said I’m sorry
Even though she couldn’t see, Jade knew Jim was sitting on the other side of the tent, and when she felt his hand reach under the bottom and stroke the back of her hand she just leant back into him a little more and held his hand, finally being the one to wonder ‘What if’ just like he had been for all those years.
