Confrontations(Pt7)
“Rebecca.” Phil softly called her name, while gently shaking her awake.
“Humm….”
“You should get up.”
Rebecca rolled away from Joe, who was dead asleep beside her. “Why?”
Phil nodded his head indicating Joe. “I don’t think he has woken up beside a warm body yet and may not think twice about who you are.”
She came fully awake and sat up. “Oh, I didn’t think about that.” She swung her legs over the side of the bed, keeping the sheet covering her nude body from Phil’s eyes. He grabbed her robe from the foot of the bed and handed it to her, then turned away.
“They brought in something to eat for us. The kids have already eaten.”
“Thank you Phil. What time is it anyway?”
“Um…just after 5p.m according to the time here.”
“Where ever here may be. We don’t even know what country we’re in.”
“No one will tell us either.”
Phil and Rebecca went out into the main room. She was the last one to get up other than Joe. Mal poured her a cup of coffee and handed it to her.
“Thanks Malvin.” Taking the mug, blowing on the hot contents and then taking a sip.
“Anybody want to talk about yesterday?” Mal asked the group.
“No, I’m all talked out.” Vivian was the first to reply.
“Same here. What else is there to talk about?” Rick told them rubbing the stubble on his face.
“I think we’re all clear on what they asked us.” Phil commented pouring another cup of coffee. All heads nodded in unison.
“Where are the children?” Rebecca asked, finally noticing that they weren’t in the room.
“Oh, Ethan came by a couple of hours ago and took them to the play room. Sorry I forgot to mention it.”
Malvin picked up another crescent roll and placed a dab of jam on it, “Amber trusts Ethan, guess her instincts are better than ours.”
“Could be she knows he won’t hurt them.”
“Well if something does happen to the kids, there will be some very pissed uncles in their faces.”
“A father too.” Rebecca put in. “Speaking of…has anyone seen Sav since he left yesterday?”
“He hasn’t came back yet.” Mal told them.
“You don’t suppose anything happened to him do you?” the worry slowly creeping into her voice.
“No….I’m sure he’s fine. Sav can take care of himself.” Mal told her pouring more orange juice from the cart of food. “After what Nick put him through all those years, he can handle anything.”
“Except when Joe tells him to get out of his life.” Phil added softly.
“Well maybe anything. How did any of us miss that, how Sav felt for Joe?” Mal finally wanted to know.
“He hid it very well. I noticed a few things over the years that seemed strange, but never thought of it in that way.”
“Same here Rick.” Phil started. “The quick glances, sometimes the way Sav touched him was almost intimate in a way.” Rick was nodding his head, remembering all of what Phil was saying.
“You know, thinking of it now…all those times that Sav would lean over Joe when they were working out some lyrics for a song, would have to be the most noticeable.”
“I thought that was the way they always wrote songs together.” Vivian commented.
“Most of the time, but Joe would also lean over him.”
“I can’t imagine hiding something like that for so long.” Vivian said thoughtfully.
“Not to change the subject…well yes, the way you guys are analyzing their relationship would make them both uncomfortable. But…has anybody seen Nick since he left yesterday or how ever long ago it was?” Rebecca wanted to get their minds off Joe and Sav by changing the subject.
“Now that you mention it….I haven’t.” Phil told her.
“They left the door unlocked, so when Phil and I walked around earlier, only person we saw was Ethan. This place is massive, we almost got lost coming back.” Rick told them.
“The hall and rooms go on forever. If Nick was in one of them we didn’t hear him.”
They sat around in silence for a little while, not much else to do. All deep in their own thoughts about what was going on and how long they were going to be there. And what was happening to Sav and Nick.

Joe came stumbling from the bedroom. Rebecca rose to greet him with a hug and Joe held up his hand to stop her. She didn’t understand until she saw the gold flaking in his eyes and knew the vampire was close to the surface. Joe grabbed the bottle on the cart. Not bothering with a glass, he upended it, drank half before he could push the vampire back down inside himself.
“Is it safe now?” Rebecca asked him.
Joe merely nodded. She came over and wrapped her arms around his neck whispering good morning in his ear.
“How do you feel Joe?” Malvin asked.
“I’m fine now. Did Sav come back yet?”
”No, we haven’t seen him or Nick.” Phil replied.
“You can’t feel him?’ Rebecca touched his cheek and met his eyes, then watched the green depths for any recognition that he could.
“No…not since…but there has been a nagging feeling…..” Joe looked away from her around the room. “…since…it’s um…goes…” a frown creased his face and his eyes glazed over as if he were staring at something on the wall.
“Joe what is it?” Phil asked coming over to stand beside him. When he didn’t get a response Phil touched his arm. “Joe.”
Joe spun his head at Phil. “I…um…feel…something’s wrong….” His voice trailed off, taking a few steps toward the door, his strides grew longer the closer he got. Gripping the knob expecting it to be locked he swung it open, it banged loudly against the wall. Stepping into the hall he stopped, looking both ways, then disappeared to the left.
“Where is he going?” Rick asked.
“I don’t know.” Phil replied and followed him. “Stay here.”
“What’s going on now?” Rick said a little whinny.
“We’ll know when they get back.” Rebecca told them.

On the other side of the house Sav moaned in his sleep. He mind was floating in a sea of images. Men, women and children in filthy rags for clothes, their skin splotchy blisters…blackened and decaying... men at battle in another time and place, bodies littered the ground, same missing legs, arms, ragged holes torn into their flesh, blood soaking into the ground.. birds chirping in the nearby forest... the snapping of a dry twig from an unseen weight... a loud splash in the clear blue lake. The massive stone structure loomed toward the cloudless sky. Rushing forward on the wind, a tortured cry…darkness… his chest rose rapidly from his heavy breathing, his mind reached out in the darkness. The flare of harsh light, his mind spiraled toward the light and the figure within. Blood… pain everywhere…hunger…burning pain…movement… the softest of whispers… Rick…
“NOOO!!” Sav's scream ripped from his throat as he bolted upright from the bed. His breath coming deep and halting, then out in a rush. “Uuu…” Swallowing around the thickness in his throat, he glanced around the dimly light room. Sav rubbed his eyes and ran his fingers through his sweat-dampened hair. “Shit.” Drawing his legs to his chest and resting his head down on them. He tried to push the images out of his mind. The desperate voice still echoing his name.
Soft fingers ran across his shoulders. “Rick, what is it?” Rachel asked then brushed the hair away so she could see his face.
Sav raised his head, rubbing his face again. “It’s noth…just a bad….” he looked at her. The concern in her eyes, while his darted back and forth between the two deep brown pools.
His sudden movement startled her when he sprang from the bed, searching franticly for his jeans. Snatching them from the floor, he shoved his legs in, zipping them up as he headed for the door.
“Rick what is it…where are you going?” Rachel called after him.
Sav was almost running down the halls, concentrating on each room that he passed. He rounded a corner and ran right into Armand.
“Mr. Savage, how are you this evening? You must slow dow…” Armand was cut off when Sav slammed him to the wall, his forearm tight against his throat.
“Where is he?” Sav spat inches from his face.
“How dare you…”
“Where!” Sav yelled.
Joe ran down the hall toward them, Phil right on his heels. “Sav what are you doing?”
Rachel came from the other direction and took in the scene. “Rick….”
Sav whipped his head around at the sound of her voice. He released Armand and flew at her. Rachel’s startled scream echoed down the hall. Her chin was in the crook of his arm, one swift twist and he would break her neck.
“Tell me where he is or I’ll snap her neck.” Sav hissed at him.
“You dare to attack one of The Elders.”
”Yes and any other ‘Elder’ that gets in my way.” Sav shot back. “I think a fair trade off would be best in this situation.” Sav looked sideways down at Rachel then back to Armand. “Isn’t that right… Daddy?”
Armand glanced at Rachel, then back to Sav. Joe and Phil stared in disbelief at what he was doing and wondered what…if any trouble this may cause them.
“What is it that the Code tells us…it’s forbidden to bring children across?”
”She is not a child.”
“I find that a virgin of 17 is a child.”
Armand’s face grew hard from his words.
“Sav you didn’t.”
“I’m sorry daddy.” Rachel choked out.
Sav chuckled. “How sweet…even after 2000 yrs she still calls you daddy.”
“You would kill my mortal child who I have protected from all the evils of the world, to save the life of someone that has brought you nothing but pain and misery?”
“Yes.” Sav hissed.
Silence stretched in the air as they stood there glaring at each other. Armand held his daughters eyes. “Very well, I’ll show you to him.”
Sav released his grip on Rachel, but held onto her arm. Armand spun on his heel. Sav pushed Rachel forward and grabbed Joe’s arm on the way by, who in turn grabbed Phil.
Winding their way down long halls, Joe moved up behind Sav and whispered in his ear. “I hope you know what your doing?”
Sav didn’t answer him and kept his eyes on Armand. He led them to a dimly lit narrow stairway, curving halfway down. Armand stopped at heavy oak door and pulled out a set of keys. He opened the door and held it for them.
“Go.” Sav told him. “And leave the door open.”
Moving down the stone passageway, he turned down another longer one and stopped in front of another door. Taking the keys he inserted it in the lock and opened the door, then stepped aside.
“You first.” Sav motioned.
Armand leaned inside the room, flipping on the light and went in, followed by Rachel and Sav. Joe and Phil came in last and looked around the long narrow room, their eyes were drawn to the light that shone down in the back.
“Oh shit..” Phil said just above a whisper.
Joe couldn’t take his eyes from the figure that hung from the ceiling in chains. All he could see was his back and it was a mass of torn flesh. The open cuts crossed over heeling wounds, blood and sweat had ran down his back to soak into his jeans. There were even cuts on his arms and rips in the jeans.
Rachel was shoved in his chest, jarring him back into awareness. “Hold her Joe and don’t either one of you move from the doorway.” Sav told him then caught his eyes. “If Armand tries anything… kill her.”
Joe stared back at him in shock, but he knew he would do it if he had too.
Sav quickly went over to Nick. He tried not to look at his torn and tattered body while fighting the rage that was building up inside him. Sav raised his head to look at his face. It to was badly beaten.
“Keys!” Sav yelled at Armand.
He came forward, reaching up to unlock the cuffs around Nick’s wrist. Sav wrapped his arms around his waist so he wouldn’t fall to the floor. Once both cuffs were unlocked, Sav bent at the waist and hoisted him on his shoulder.
“Lets go, you stay in front Armand.”
Joe and Phil moved aside, then followed behind Sav.
