Everlasting Love(Pt28)
Sav was struggling to stay awake from the medication that Mal had given him, long enough to hear Joe’s answer. All the hope that he had when he awoke yesterday, to find Joe by his side, began to fade with each minute that ticked by. Sav watched as he played with the glass in his hand, then caught the glint of light reflect off of the silver band.
“If you’re not sure why you are here, then why do you still wear the ring that I gave you?”
Joe twisted his hand around to stare down at the ring. “I…uh…”
“What about the way you kissed me last night or the way you held me in your arms while we slept.....for that matter, just moments ago?”
“It was just reflex, that’s all.” Joe quickly replied looking at him. He saw the last burning embers of hope fade from his eyes.
“Reflex?” Sav’s brow knitted briefly. He dropped his eyes from Joe, so he couldn’t see the tears that suddenly sprang to them. He realized that Joe wasn’t ready to forgive him or want him back in his life….ever. Sav slid down in the bed, pulling the sheet over his shoulder. “Go home, go back to your family.”
Joe sat his glass on the mantle. Long strides, quick strides had him by the bed in seconds. He eased down to sit beside him, grasping his shoulder, Joe turned him over. “You are family Sav and I’m staying as long it takes for you to get well, so you can go home with me.”
“There’s nothing there for me. You said yourself it’s over between us.”
“I didn’t say that, just that I wasn’t sure. There are too many unresolved issues between us.” Joe reached up and brushed the tear away that slid from the corner of Sav’s eye. “I do love you, and want you in my life, where you belong…forever.”
“Stop it…!” Sav yelled and slapped his hand away. “You’re confusing me. One minute you don’t want me an…and the next, your spouting you do, like nothing happened.” Sav turned his back on him, grabbing the pillow to cover his head. “Get out, leave me alone.”
Joe touched his shoulder, but Sav jerked away from him.
Mal stood up then and went over to them, taking Joe’s arms to pull him up and out of the room. “Let him rest, come back later.”
Mal let go of Joe and closed the door, still facing it. “I’ll take that job back now.” He spun to face Joe then, eyes glowing amber and fangs peeking from behind his lip. “I may still be smaller than you Joe, but I’m a lot stronger now.”
“A munchkin vampire...you’re very cute Mal.” Joe giggled as he spoke.
Mal’s eyes became dark amber, he swung his fist up, catching him in the jaw. Joe, unprepared for it, stumbled back and fell flat on his ass.
“What the hell was that for?” Joe whined as he rubbed his jaw.
“Something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time and for being such a pigheaded ass to Sav.”
“Me!” Joe exclaimed. “What about all…”
Mal gripped his shirt front and hauled him to his feet. “The times he did the same to you? You were never on the verge of death like he…”
”Yes I was.” Joe shot back as Mal shoved him down the passage way.
“You were screwing with his head in there Joe.” Mal smacked his face. “This game you are playing with his mind, could set us back for weeks.” Smack! “Don’t forget that he saved your daughter from death…” Smack! “…at the risk of his own life.”
”You slap me again Malvin and you’re fired.” Joe said angrily and dodged another swipe of Mal’s hand as he stepped backwards, with Mal following closely.
Smack! “He did you a favor Joe by bringing Amber across, and how do you repay him?...” Mal punched him in the chest with his fist. “Once again you tell him it’s over between you two.” Mal shoved him harder.
“Cut it out Mal, I’m warning you.” Joe backed up a few more steps.
Mal’s left hand balled into a fist and swung up, hitting Joe in the mouth, sending him stumbling backwards to land on his ass again. Mal stood above him and reached for his shirt. Joe flinched slightly, thinking that he was going to hit him again
“Don’t ever warn me about anything Joseph.” Mal sneered, his fangs flashing. “Go ahead, leave if you want to, but know this. If you leave now and come back later when you’ve figured out want you want. Sav will not be here, your leaving will kill him this time.” He shoved Joe back and stood up, glaring at his stunned and angry face a moment before he spun on his heel and stalked down the passage.
Joe caught sight of Nick coming closer and stopped in front of Sav’s door. Mal spoke to him a few seconds and disappeared into the room across from his. Nick glanced down the passage way at Joe, as he pulled himself from the cold stone floor. Without a word Nick turned away and went inside.
Joe stood there staring down the empty hall, stunned at what Malvin had done. Torn between what to do now, Joe slumped against the stone wall, leaning his head back and closing his eyes.
“I see you’ve met our resident little Welsh man.” Juliann said as she slipped from the shadows.
Joe nearly jumped out of his skin at her voice.
“I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to startle you.”
”I’ve known Malvin a very long time, but rarely saw that side of him.”
“He’s right, you know...about what he said to you. I overheard the argument.”
”You don’t now anything about us.” Joe snapped. “So how could you possibly know what he was talking about?”
Juliann stepped closer. “I’ve been taking care of Rick since the moment he arrived. I think I know him quite well.”
“How could you, he wasn’t even awake or coherent enough to talk, or you’ve taken his blood?”
“I’ve done both.”
“But…” Joe started.
“Why don’t you come to my room and we can talk.”
Joe glanced toward Sav’s room.
“He’ll be fine Joe.”
“But it…its…he’s restless and Nick is…is in there. But that’s not why he can’t sleep.” Joe looked at the floor.
“Come on.” Juliann gentle pulled him from the wall and lead him down a little ways before she stepped inside another small room.
Joe glanced around and figured that this was a room that had been drilled out by the people that lived here. The room was sparsely furnished, with a single bed covered in a yellow flowered spread. A mid-sized natural stained armoire stood opposite the bed, its light coloring giving a little brightness to the other wise dark room.
“Would you like something to drink?” Juliann asked as she poured two glasses of blood wine.
Joe looked at her blankly. “um…no thank you. I...I’ve changed my mind.” He started and backed out of the room. “I’d rather be alone right now.”
Juliann didn’t stop him as he left her room.

Sav felt the mattress dip behind him as someone sat on the bed, then a gentle hand ran up his arm to ease the pillow off that covered his head. Sav knew it wasn’t Joe as he turned weary red puffy eyes to see Nick sitting there.
“Even now, painfully thin, you are still breath taking to gaze upon.”
”Yeah right…don’t make me laugh Nick, it hurts to laugh.”
“I speak the truth Richard.” Nick placed his finger on Sav’s chin to turn his head back to gaze at him.
“Breath taking eh…that sounded really stupid, you hardly breath as it is.”
“For lack of better words.” Nick rubbed his thumb over the wet tracks of tears that had run down to soak in Sav’s hair. “Things did not go well between you and Joseph. Is that why you have been crying?”
“If you must know, they did not.” Sav looked away from him. “Joe doesn’t know what he wants…he’s not sure he wants me back, but yet he does.” Sav frowned in confusion. “If he doesn’t, I bet that would make you very happy. I’ll be all yours again.”
“Nothing would make me happier to have you all to myself, but I have to be realistic. That will never happen, without Joe, you would rather die. I know you too well Rick.”
”Maybe not as well as you think. Maybe I don’t want to die…I mean, Joe isn’t the only one I love, there are other people in my life.” Sav stopped twisting the sheet in his fingers to look up at Nick. “I could be happy with you again.”
Nick smiled and glanced down at his hands. “I would like that very much, but I’ve…I’ve decided, once you are completely recovered, that I will give you back your freedom. Something you have always wanted, you will be free of me for eternity. Our paths may cross again at some point in the future, but I will never seek your companionship again.”
Sav struggled to sit up, the thought of sleep and how tired he was quickly vanishing. “Why…why are you telling me this now? I’ve lost Joe and now I’m losing you too.”
”It’s time that I say my goodbyes to you and ask for your forgiveness in everything I’ve put you through over the years. Time for me to move on.”
“I did that years ago Nick, if I didn’t, I wouldn’t have kept going back to you, meeting you whenever you called.”
”The last time I demanded that you go away with me, you defied me and look where it got you. It’s for the best that I move on....without you.” Nick started to get up, Sav’s hand shot out to grab his to pull him back down.
“Wait…I…I don’t want you to go.”
”You need your rest.” Nick told him. “I’ll just be down the hall.”
“No, you don’t understand, that’s not what I meant. I don’t want you to leave me…not ever.”
“That is the sickness talking, you don’t know…”
Sav suddenly pulled Nick to his chest, wrapping his arms around his neck and waist. “No its not, I swear. I don’t want you to move on Nick, you have to stay with me…please.”
Nick closed his eyes, fighting emotions that threatened to overtake him from Sav’s pleas to stay in his life.
“I may never get Joe back, but I’ll always have you. That is worth living for, knowing that you will be there for me.” Sav pulled back and captured his lips.
Nick was taken back by its gentleness, in his mind he felt Sav’s probing and all the promises that it held for them in the future.
Nick broke away first and softly caressed his cheek, while gazing deep into the blue eyes that could make him walk to his death in the sun. The man that had captivated him so long ago and would give his life for.
“Say you’ll stay.” Sav whispered.

Joe wondered the passage ways of the vast underground cavern. He had no idea where he was going or where he was. He had detected a soft wind like sound and headed in that general direction, getting turned around several times before it started growing louder. Rounding yet another corner as he followed the sound he stopped in his tracks. Before him was an enormous room, this one was not man made, but a natural cavern that the earth had carved out over the eons.
Joe stepped closer to the crystal clear water of a pool, the soft rippling of the water deceived its depth. Turning away from the pool, Joe glanced around the room. The sound of the misty waterfall is what drew him here. Looking upward, Joe discovered that the source of the water came from a large hole in the wall of the cave. It cascade downward at least a hundred feet to the pool.
Lights had been placed in various spots around the room to reveal its natural beauty. It sparkled off of the waterfall and danced along the walls to enlighten the red, orange and a touch of light green that were embedded in the limestone rock.
Joe sat down at the edge of the pooled water and let the serenity of this place seep into his mind and body. ‘If Rick knew about this place and was able to get out of bed, this is where he would go to think or be alone.’ Joe thought. 'It’s a good place to do just that.' Reaching in his back pocket, he pulled out his wallet and flipped to the picture of Sav, tracing his finger lightly over plastic that covered it.
He though about all the years they were together, all the ups and downs of their relationship, all the times they had forgiven each for whatever reasons. ‘Can I do that this time?’ Joe asked himself. ‘He raped my daughter, someone he claims to love, put a wedge between us that we are still trying to get past. Why do I hold it against him, when Amber doesn’t? I have to take some blame for what happened. But can I stay in this existence without him?’
Joe sighed heavily and looked back out at the waterfall. “What am I going to do?” he asked the water, hoping it would give him answers.
“You can get out of my seat.” Came a little voice behind him.
Joe twisted around to see a little girl standing there with her hands on her hips, scowling at him. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know this was your seat.”
She stalked over and plopped down beside him and promptly stuck her feet in the water. “You can sit there just this once.”
“Ok.” Joe smiled at her. “Thank you.”
“Who are you?” she asked after a few minutes.
“I’m Joe.” He stuck his hand toward her. “And you are?”
”Miranda.” She slid her small hand into his.
“Nice to meet you Miranda, very pretty name. Can I ask how old you are?”
“8, I live here with my mom, but we’re not vampires like most.” She told him then noticed Joe’s wallet in his lap and the picture that it was turned to. “You know Rick?”
“Um…yes I do.”
Miranda smiled. “I like him, he’s nice. I talk to him a lot when he’s awake. Sometimes he reads with me.” She turned her large brown eyes to look up at Joe. “He’s was very sick when he first came here. Did you know that?”
”Yes I did, he was at my house when he became ill.”
Miranda frowned a bit and realizations showed on her face. “Oh, you’re Rick's Joe. He talks about you all the time.” She splashed her feet in the water, sprinkling Joe with small drops. “He cries for you a lot too, makes me sad that he does.”
Joe’s smile faded from her words about Sav, he glanced back at the picture of him.
“Did you come here to take Rick home when he gets better? He wants to go home, but Gabriel won’t let him, not until he’s better anyway.”
“I’m not sure.” Joe almost whispered.
“That’s what Rick said too.”
Joe looked at her. “You’ve spent a lot of time with Rick and you’re very talkative.”
”Rick lets me talk away, about anything. That’s why I came down here, I got in trouble for talking too much. Mom got tired of it and sent me to play. I was going to visit Rick, but somebody was already there and I couldn’t. So I came here.”
“And found me to talk too.”
Miranda smiled and wiggled her toes in the cool water. She pulled her feet from the water and stood up. “I have to go.”
”You just got here.”
“Mom will be worried, 'cause I didn’t tell her where I was going, it’s a big cave and lots of places to hide. She’ll be looking for me.” Miranda turned to leave.
“Miranda…” Joe called and stood up. “This is the first time I’ve been here and hum…well, I’m kinda lost. I don’t know my way back.”
“I’ll show you.” Miranda giggled and took Joe’s hand, pulling him through the passageways as she talked the whole time.
