When Night Falls(Pt28)
After the repeated attempts of banging on the metal door, yelling through it, trying to get Armand to bring him something, Sav had resorted to taking his own blood to sustain him. He slowly licked the blood from his wrist, then dropped his arm down in his lap. He lost count of how many times he had taken his own blood to calm the gnawing hunger, but it gave him little strength. Taking a deep breath, he let his head rest against wall. The roughness of the brick’s biting into his bare back. Pulling his knees to his chest, Sav propped his elbows on his knees, then thrust his fingers in his hair.
He tried to think of what else Armand had planned for them, what his next move was. Through the fogginess of his memory, he recalled Joe saying something about a trade. ‘A trade for who or what? Surely he wasn’t talking about Amber. No, Joe would never do that, not even for me. He has something else planned…I know he does…and so does Nick. They are working together, to put an end to this, without killing anyone else in this mess, other than Armand.’
Taking another deep breath, he forced it from his lungs. ‘How much longer?’ He asked himself again. ‘I’m not even sure how long I’ve been here anymore. When was the last time Armand came down here? To fucking long.’ His stomach growled in response.
“At least I had Nick to pester me every day. Even Marcus’ company right now would be better than this…nothing. Nothing but a very dark room and no one to talk to…only myself.” Sav grumbled, as he pushed himself from the floor. Dizziness swam through his head, placing his hand on the wall to steady himself, waiting for it to pass. Once it was gone, he made his way over to the metal door. He banged on it several times, calling out for Armand to open it. He knew that it was useless to do so, but continued to do it.
His throat raw and scratchy from the constant yelling, his fist numb from banging. When he finally heard the metal lock turn, he moved to the side and waited for Armand to step inside the room, ready to attack him. Sav watched him stop some ten feet from him before he rushed forward.
Armand spun around, his arm swung up, catching Sav in the jaw. The force of the blow sent him spinning several feet away. Armand came at him, pushing him to the wall.
“Such foolishness will get you killed.” Armand hissed in his face.
“You’re going to kill me anyway.”
“You don’t want to die before you see your beloved Mr. Elliott again do you?”
“Are you taking me home?”
“Of course!” Armand smiled.
“Then what?”
Armand slammed him backwards again. Blackness danced at the edge of Sav’s vision from the force of his head hitting stone. “For your sake, you better hope that Mr. Elliott behaves himself and not cause any problems. His actions could prove…as they say...fatal.”
“For who?”
“I haven’t decided yet. Could be you…could be everyone.”
Ignoring the dizziness, Sav tried to focus on his face in the dark. “Why are you doing this? Revenge…for what we did to you all those years ago. Killing my family will not change that, nor will it change your idea of the grand scheme of things you are after. Doing this will not get you back in as head of the Elders. You brought it on yourself by feeling that you are superior to everyone around you.”
“I am superior to everyone!” Armand growled inches from his face. “No more talking. Now put this on.”
“Why do I need the blindfold if you’re taking me home?”
“No more questions.”
Sav reluctantly took the blindfold and tied it around his head. “Am I to assume that you are going to parade me outside in just these shorts? People might see the blood, bruises...call the police.”
Armand pinned him to the wall with his body. “You assume correctly. Shame we don’t have time for one more fuck. And there is no one around to see you.” He came down hard on his mouth and jabbed the needle deep in his thigh. Pulling back slightly when Sav twisted his head away from him. “Just a little something to make you a little more cooperative.”
“I don’t think that will be a problem. You haven’t brought me anything to eat since you killed Dylan. Why did you kill him?”
”That was an accident.”
“Nothing has been an accident since you started this insane plot to kill all of us.” Sav stumbled up the steps scraping his shin as Armand pushed him forward a few minutes later. “I can’t see a goddamn thing with this blindfold on.”
“To bad.” Armand shoved him again. “Keep moving.”
Gathering what little strength the had, Sav spun around, ignoring the dizziness that came with the fast movement. He brought his leg up, intending to kick Armand down the stairs, it met air.
A low chuckle was his reward for missing. “Nice try. Seems that superior strength has failed you once again.”
“Stop giving me those drugs and you will see it.” Sav replied as he yanked the blind fold off, just as the fist connected to his jaw, sending him down hard on the concrete steps. Another harsh blow to his back stilled any more attempts to fight back. Moments later he felt the soft material of the blind fold land by his hand.
“Put it back on.”
With shaking hands, Sav slipped it back on and pushed himself to stand, ignoring the searing pain in his back. He know if Armand hit him there again, he would be paralyzed. He welcomed the slight numbing effects of drugs as it rapidly spread through him, but it made him repeatedly stumble. Sav threw his arms out in front of him, feeling for anything he might run into as Armand gave him directions through the house. Sav smelled the fresh air, then felt the coolness on his skin as they stepped outside.
“I hope you don’t expect me to fly.” He grumbled.
“Of course not.” Armand replied grabbing his arm. “We will be traveling by van. You will be in the back…alone.”
“Wonderful.” Sav mumbled as he climbed inside. The doors quickly slammed behind him. Getting as comfortable as he could, Sav leaned back on the cold metal side, letting his mind reach out to anyone that could possibly feel him.

The crisp evening air of Autumn settled over the lush, green sloping hills around the grounds. The light of the full moon illuminated the trees with their reds, golds and yellow leaves as they danced in the light breeze. Billions of stars twinkled overhead, much the same way as the waters of the bay.
Most years, Joe loved the changing of seasons, watching the landscape change, go dormant, only to burst to life in a few short months. But not this year as chaos around him ruled, he found it hard to enjoy without Sav by his side.
He lay back in the grass as he has done so many times in the past, enjoying the peace and serenity of his home. He was always drawn to this place, more so over the last few months, it helped to clear his mind or get his thoughts sorted. But tonight it wasn’t meant to be, too many question swirled around of a recent, over heard conversation.
“Is it true?”
“Clarify?”
Joe absent minded rubbed his chest, “What you talked about before, about old blood, vampires of old.”
“Yes.”
“A blood line you vowed to protect.”
“I did.”
“Were Anthony and Marissa the only ones with that blood line?”
“No.”
“How many before them?”
“Two.”
“Rick and I have that blood line?”
“Yes.”
“Protecting something doesn’t mean to beat, torture, threaten as you have done to Rick.”
When no reply came, Joe raised his head to gaze into the darkness of the trees. “Not going to answer that one?”
“No.”
Joe rolled his eyes and flopped his head back down. “Were you ever going to share that secret with us?”
“No.”
Pushing himself up Joe crossed his legs and began pick at the grass in front of him. “Do our children also carry that?”
“They do.”
“I don’t even understand this. How can a single blood line survive all this time? At some point it would get mixed with another, not be pure.”
“Perhaps.”
“Pure blood lines means incest. Where Anthony and Marissa brother and sister?”
“No.”
“Then how can it be pure?”
“Unclear.”
“Is mine and Rick’s pure?”
“Yes.”
Joe stared at his hands, trying to wrap his mind around what little Nick was giving away, to the point of almost giving him a headache.
“Not going to think about that anymore.”
"Wise choice."
Propping on his elbows Joe scanned the darkness. “What you doing out there?”
“Hunting golf balls.”
Laughter rumbled deep in Joe’s lungs until it rolled out across the land.
“I’m glad you found that amusing Joseph.”
Joe stifled his laughter, “I’m glad you responded with more then just one word.”
“It is nice to hear you laugh.” Nick replied as he finally emerged from the wooded area, making his way to where Joe was lounging back in the grass. Sitting down the basket of golf balls he sat beside him.
“Beautiful night...quiet now.”
Beside him, Joe snorted, “You were making plenty of noise out there.”
A comfortable silence settled between them, both men deep in their own thoughts while enjoying the company.
Joe finally broke the silence, “Armand is not going to let him go.”
“It would seem we are at another impasse.”
“We should’ve had Dylan followed, it would be over.”
“Perhaps. But that would have put Sav’s life in mortal danger.”
Joe flip the hair from his face and gazed up at the moon. “I just want him home Nick.”
“So do I.”
“I’ve never been so mentally and physical exhausted in my life. I don’t even know how I've managed not to fall into despair like I always do when Sav’s has...”
“You have the best family support systems, they are helping you stay focused, alert.”
“I had that before and it didn’t help. Why is it different this time.”
“I believe...” Nick started as he stood up. “...it has a lot to do with Sav being in danger this time. Before, you could feel him, sense him deep in your mind. You knew he would come home.”
“But I still fell into depression. This time, I’m not getting any of that, can’t feel him, can’t sense him, have no idea if he is ever coming home. So I should be so deep in depression, you could cut my arm off and I wouldn’t care.”
“But you are not. You fear if you do, you will not hear his call.” Nick glanced at the horizon as it brightened. “Come, time to go inside.”
Joe looked up at him, then his outstretch hand, ready to pull him up, he reluctantly took it.
Nick pulled him closer then was needed, glancing at his mouth, “Perhaps a hot bath, oil message will help you relax.”
Joe took a step back, the hint Nick was giving him hummed in the air around them. “UH...the hot bath will be enough.”
A suggestive smile touched his face, “As you…”
“I can run my own hot bath Nick, I don’t…” Joe started, then looked to the back deck as raised voices reached his ears. “What now?”
“There has been tension between Kyle and Beth a few weeks now. She has expressed many times to go home.”
Joe whipped his eyes back to Nick. “She can’t, not yet. We don’t know where Armand is or will do.”
“Kyle has told her that many times.” Nick replied as he made his way to the arguing couple.
Beth sighed heavily as the same argument went no where.
“Babe please,” Kyle said as calmly as he could. “We must stay here until he is dealt with, it’s too dangerous right now to leave.”
“What danger Kyle? He hasn’t made contact in weeks. For all we know Rick is dead and they will not tell us the truth.”
“Mrs. Manning…”
Startled, Beth spun around at Nick’s voice.
“..I can assure you that Rick is very much alive.”
“How?” she shot back.
“The man standing behind me would be well on his way to join him if he were dead, as…” Nick turned to glance at Joe, “...as you can see, he is not.”
“That bond thing I keep hearing so much about.”
“Yes. It works much the same way as a mother and child in some mortals. They can feel or sense when a child is… well, I’m sure you have heard about that.”
“I have,” Beth began. “But how much longer are you going to wait, put your life on hold waiting for Armand to make contact?”
“For as long as we must.”
“Please Beth, we have to see this through, for however long it takes to bring Rick home or…”
Beth turned back to face her husband. “It doesn’t matter anymore, he probably isn’t coming back and I’m not staying here any longer.”
Kyle reached for her and she stepped away from him. “I’m going home Kyle, with or without you. Our flight is already booked for today.”
“That will not be necessary Mrs. Manning. I took it upon myself to cancel your reservations…”
Joe rolled his eyes and flopped down in the nearest chair, already knowing where the conversation was heading.
“What gives you the right to…” Beth took a step back as Nick quickly came forward a few steps.
“When it comes to protecting this family from danger, I have every right...and in this instants, your rights do not matter to me.”
“You can’t just demand…” Beth started and Joe cut her off.
“Yes he can and will.”
“Just hear me out please…”
“He said please. Nick doesn’t say that...ever...maybe twice since I’ve known him, he will get his way no matter what.”
Nick slowly cut a look to Joe to silence him. “Joseph.”
Joe held his hand up in surrender.
“Now, as I was going to say. You have the use of my private...
"Our." Joe corrected him, once again getting a 'shut up look'.
Nick continued, "...our private jet to take you and the children home. I have hired additional guards to over see your safety for however long this may take, even after, you may have them for life.”
“Are you sure Nick? Wouldn’t she be a target.”
“Rest assured Kyle, she will be safe.” Nick reached in his pocket and withdrew a cell phone. “My number is already programmed if you are in need of anything.”
Beth was stunned into silence at the lengths Nick was going to, but in her mind she already knew he would have done everything to protect her.
“One other thing,” Nick’s voice drew her attention. “I understand that you have a Masters Degree in architecture?”
“Yes, but I haven’t done designs for many years.”
Nick once again reached into his pocket, pulling out papers. “This is a power of attorney, on my behalf you will over see the completion of de Brabant Foundation building, whatever the cost.”
“But Nick, I don’t know…”
“He has every confidence in you Beth.” Joe smirked.
“It would be an honor if you could over see the building, it would free up my time for more...critical matters. You will do a splendid job.” Nick smiled. “Not sure if I will be available to see you off later today. Have a safe flight.” He quickly pecked her on the cheek. “Joseph, it is time to retire.”
Pushing his tired body from the chair, Joe stepped over to Beth, gently taking her in his arms to hug her. “He can be a nice asshole too. Don’t worry, everything will be alright. Nick will not let anything happen to Kyle while he stays here with us.”
Beth pulled away. “He let Rick be taken.”
“And the guilt that is eating him up inside for that is painful through our bond. I’ll leave you two alone, spend some needed time together before you leave.” Kissing her on the cheek, Joe followed Nick inside.
“Are you sure you want to do this Beth?”
“No...yes, I’m sure. I’m just not sure how Nick knew.”
Kyle chuckled behind her. “I stopped trying to figure that out years ago. But he does have excellent hearing and eyes. Eyes and ears every where in the guards that surround this place.”
“You’re right he does. Still doesn’t change that I want to go home, get on with our lives.” Beth suddenly turned to him. “You should come to. What about your practice, Daniel starts collage next year.”
Kyle dropped his gaze. “I can’t right now. I know you will not understand this, but something, a feeling, something is wanting me to stay here. I don’t know what it is myself, or what it means, just a feeling.”
Beth studied him a moment, seeing the slight confusion in his eyes, but the determination to find answers of what he was feeling. “OK, I may not like it, but I also know how bull headed you can be.”
Kyle gathered her in his arms. “It’s going to be alright. I’ll be home sooner then you think.”
