Georg faces Tom in the hotel room, staring down at the younger actor. Years ago, those words of reciprocated emotion would have had him jumping for joy but coming this long after the break-up they have no use except to remind Georg of how horribly it all ended.
“Well, don’t you think it’s a little too late to be telling me this? You already screwed things up, Tom.”
“I know that,” Tom confesses. “And that’s why I’m here. I want to try and unscrew things. I want to see you again, Georg. I’ve missed you, man.”
“Oh, really?” Georg scoffs. “If you missed me so much then why didn’t you ever contact me, huh? How hard would it have been to dial a phone or pick up a pen and paper? Even a simple email would have sufficed. You just dropped off the face of the earth and if I hadn’t read those goddamn trashy gossip magazines I wouldn’t have even known if you were alive or dead!”
“I wanted to contact you, believe me,” Tom jumps in. “But I just...couldn’t.”
“And why not?” Georg drawls sardonically. “Were you feeling guilty over dumping me like a piece of trash?”
Tom casts his gaze downwards. He murmurs bitterly, “You have no idea how much guilt I’ve been living with.”
“Yeah, well, you should feel bad,” the other man replies accusingly. “You didn’t want me then so why do you want me now?”
“Georg, I didn’t dump you because I didn’t want you anymore.” Tom’s voice is pleading, as is his face. “After we slept together, I wanted to keep seeing you, except the next morning I got a phone call. From Billinda. She said-”
“Here we go with the sob story,” Georg interjects with a roll of his eyes, taking an impatient drag on his cigarette and talking through a mouthful of smoke. “You know, I really don’t have the time for-”
“Hey, I’m talking here!” Tom slices into Georg’s rant. “You wanna know what happened? Well, I’m trying to tell you so the least you can do is shut the fuck up and listen to me, all right?”
After that little scolding, Georg realises he’s being an unmitigated asshole so he closes his mouth and lets Tom speak.
“As I was saying,” Tom continues with a glower, “I got a call from Bill. She told me she’d been to the doctor. She’d been losing her voice and was having difficulty swallowing. The doctor found a cyst in her throat. It turned out to be cancerous.”
Tom allows that to sink in. Georg’s expression changes, turns to one of shock. His cigarette dangles in his limp fingers, forgotten.
“When she came to be with me on the set that last time, it was just before her operation. She was petrified. I spoke to Gustav and was able to be there in the hospital before she went in and when she came out of surgery.”
Thinking back, Georg remembers that Tom had been absent for a few days during the final part of the shoot. He thought Tom was sick but now he knows the real reason. Bill was having the cancerous cyst removed from her throat.
“They took out the lump and some surrounding tissue, hopeful that they got it all. Then she had to go through six months of chemotherapy and radiation therapy but by then shooting was over and I was back home so I could be there to help her with that.” Tom looks up at Georg with remorse. “I wanted to be with you, Georg, I really did, but I couldn’t just abandon her. She didn’t know if she was going to live or die. She was scared and she needed me. I’m so sorry for leaving you but I had to be there for Bill.”
“My God,” Georg breathes, sitting down on the bed, finally understanding why Tom left him the way he did. It wasn’t about him being afraid of committing to a relationship with Georg. It wasn’t about Tom being a coward at all. The kid had to look after his cancer-stricken girlfriend, to support Bill in her time of need - going with her to the hospital for treatment, holding her hand when she got needles stuck into her veins, sitting and talking to her as she lolled in bed too sick and drained to move, wiping her face when she was curled up on the bathroom floor cramped with excruciating pain and constantly throwing up. That’s the bravest thing Tom could have done. To take care of Bill. To be by her side. That’s dedication. That’s commitment. And here Georg was being a self-centered prick and thinking only about himself.
“How is Bill now? Is she okay?” Georg asks in concern, butting out the cigarette which has lost its taste and appeal.
“She’s fine,” Tom replies. “She got through all the chemo and radiation therapy and she’s completely cancer-free today. She still has her voice too so she’s really lucky. She didn’t care about her hair falling out or dropping weight until she looked like a skeleton – she just wanted to keep her voice.” He smiles with admiration. “She was so fucking determined to beat it. When Bill wants something, she’ll do anything to get it and so she put up with all the needles and the pain and the puking because she wanted to get better. Now she is.”
“And that’s why she was so thin at the premiere,” Georg says slowly, everything making sense now. “That’s why she was wearing a scarf. She’d lost her hair, hadn’t she?”
Tom nods. “It was only just starting to grow back.”
“Oh, man.” Georg groans and drops his face into his palms, disgustingly ashamed of himself. “I’ve been pissed off with you for the last five years for all the wrong reasons. Why didn’t you tell me she had cancer?”
“She didn’t want anyone to know. I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you but I had to respect her wishes.”
Georg nods, putting his elbows on his thighs and his fists under his chin, waiting for Tom to continue. The younger actor absently twirls a piece of his beard in his fingers and focuses on a spot on the carpet as he talks.
“So, one night after Bill recovered, we had an all-night talk about death, life, our relationship, everything. We told each other all our secrets.” He pauses. “I even told her I liked other guys.”
“How’d she react to that?”
“She said she knew and was waiting for me to come out and tell her, when I was ready. I was an idiot to think she wouldn’t figure it out. Bill’s a smart cookie.” Tom’s eyes lift to Georg. “Since we were being so honest, I told her about you.”
“What, all of it?”
“All of it. Everything we did. Everything we said. The whole lot.”
Georg’s brows rise. “And she didn’t kill you?”
Tom’s mouth twists in agreement. “Yeah, any other girl would have hired a hitman to take me out but she wasn’t mad at me.”
“Was she mad at ME?” Georg winces, anticipating most of the blame since he was the older party in the affair and should have known better.
“Nope. Bill already sensed that there was something going on between us, especially when you came to our gig that night.”
“So, she WAS hinting at it,” Georg mutters softly to himself, remembering the things she said about how much Georg meant to Tom and how Tom was sulking over the fight, something Bill mentioned he never did with any other male friends.
“Bill understood completely, saying that a person’s heart doesn’t recognize gender, or what society thinks is right or wrong; it only recognizes love.” Tom smiles fondly. “She’s always been the kindest person I’ve known and nearly dying from that disease made her even more empathic and accepting than ever. She asked if I missed you and I told her that I did. She said life was too short to be unhappy so she wanted me to go get you back and be with you. Bill gave me her blessing.”
“Wow. That’s unbelievably generous of her! What an amazing woman,” Georg remarks, wondering how Bill could be so unselfish and kind as to let her boyfriend go straight after she’d battled throat cancer. Instead of accusing Tom of cheating and betrayal, she actually encouraged him to start the affair up again!
“Yeah, Bill’s fucking incredible,” Tom seconds. “After everything she’d been through, she just wanted me to be happy. That’s the kind of chick she is.”
A thought strikes Georg. “Hang on a minute - If Bill gave you her blessing then why did it take you so long to come find me, Tom? It’s been years.”
“I dunno. I thought you wouldn’t want me anymore. I thought you’d hate me by now. Most of all, I thought you were with Hannah,” Tom mumbles. After he broke up with Georg, Tom knew that the older man would get together with the red-headed actress they’d been working with. He knew that Georg would turn to her for solace and that she would happily give it. Tom vowed once that Hannah would never get to have Georg but that’s precisely what happened. She got him.
“I was so jealous when you started dating her,” Tom confides with a self-conscious laugh. “But I couldn’t do anything about it. Drove me nuts. I truly thought you were gonna marry her.”
“I nearly did,” Georg professes.
“So why didn’t you?”
“Hannah ended the engagement, saying I didn’t seem enthusiastic enough. She said I just wasn’t as excited or happy about it as she was. And she was right,” Georg concludes with a shrug of his shoulders.
A look of confusion settles on Tom’s countenance. “But what happened? I saw all the photos of you two together in the magazines and it sure looked like you loved her.”
“I did,” Georg reveals. “Very much.”
“Then why weren’t you happy?”
Flashing a patient look at Tom, Georg says, “I’ll give you one guess.”
Tom takes an optimistic stab. “Me?”
“Yeah, you,” Georg confirms. “I still had feelings for you. Strong ones. Try as I might, I couldn’t get over you, kiddo.”
“Me either,” Tom responds, lowering his eyes. “No matter how busy I was, I still kept thinking of you, G. You were the one drug I never could get out of my system.”
“So, you broke up with Billinda and just stayed friends?” Georg recalls the boy saying how much Bill’s friendship meant to him. They must get along wonderfully to be able to work closely together in the band like they do, as platonic partners instead of romantic ones.
“Oh, no. We’re still a couple,” Tom states. “In fact, we’re engaged.”
Georg shakes his head in bewilderment. “I...I don’t understand.”
Tom realises how confusing this all must be for Georg, so he tries to explain the situation as best he can.
“After almost losing her to cancer, I realised that I couldn’t live without Bill. She’s my best friend in the whole world, like my twin. I told her that I couldn’t leave her, not for anyone, no matter how strongly I felt about them, no matter what my sexuality was. I gave her a diamond ring to prove how serious I was about her. She tried everything she could to help with my needs, including roleplaying as a dude with a strap-on dick,” Tom reveals. “She even let me be with other guys, as long as I told her all about it and what we did.”
“Really?” Georg questions in astonishment, wondering why he’s never met a woman like that.
Tom nods. “Sometimes, Bill watched us and occasionally joined in, if the other guy was cool about it. All this really put the spice back in our sex-life and brought us much closer together. But there was one thing I could never bring myself to do and that was let another guy fuck me. I had no problems fucking them but I couldn’t go the other way. And it wasn’t because I was scared. After Bill using the strap-on with me, I wasn’t afraid of having a cock inside me anymore.”
“Then what was it?” Georg asks, wondering why the kid didn’t just go all the way with his male lovers if he had fully embraced his bisexuality. Even Georg has let himself be fucked a few times over the years, when he finds a man he fancies, although it has never been as amazing as it was with Tom. That wasn’t fucking, though – what he did with Tom on that last night had been lovemaking and Georg has never experienced anything so incredible or fulfilling since then. It takes a lot of trusting and openness to share that kind of emotional intimacy with somebody.
“I just haven’t been able to trust any other guys the way I trusted you, G,” Tom confesses, apparently thinking along the same lines. “If it wasn’t you taking my virginity, it wouldn’t be what I really wanted and so nobody got to do it. Except for Bill, but even she acknowledges that a fake dick is no substitute. So today, after I told her I had coffee with you and that you still seemed into me, she proposed a possible solution. She didn’t want me missing out or living with regret for the rest of my life so she suggested us getting together - you, me and her. Only more of a long-term thing, not a one-nighter. You know, only if you were interested.”
Seeing Georg’s utter disbelief, Tom adds, “Bill knows I’m here with you right now. In fact, she’s in a room down the hall, in case you say yes.”
“You’re talking about a polyamorous relationship? Like, a full-on relationship between three people?”
Tom nods. “Bill said that since I cared for you so much, she was willing to share me with you. She has plenty of love to go around. And this way we don’t have to keep any secrets so nobody gets hurt. This way you can come to our place and stay, whenever you like. Our bed is big enough for all of us.”
Georg’s eyebrows are lifted so high, they’ve almost merged with his hairline. He exclaims, “She wants to sleep with me too?”
Tom shrugs affirmatively. “Yeah. Don’t you think she’s attractive?”
Almost laughing at the absurdity of the question, Georg replies, “Of course she is. She’s simply stunning. I just never imagined that she’d want to be involved with me in that way.”
“Well, she does,” the bearded male states without any envy. “She’s always had a thing for you, Georg, way before you two even met on the set that day. You were one of her celebrity crushes and meeting you in person and seeing for herself how down-to-earth and humble you are just made Bill admire you more. And everything I’ve told her about you, like how well you treated me and how romantic and sensitive you are...she would really like to know you better. Even if you don’t want to sleep with her, she hopes you two can be close friends one day.”
Georg blinks, unsure what to say.
“I know it’s a huge thing to ask, and I realise it would be a totally unconventional relationship, but would you at least consider it?” Tom asks with hope in his voice. “We can finally be together, G, and nothing would be in our way. Bill is encouraging this. Hell, it was HER idea. If you still have feelings for me, if you still care for me, please think seriously about saying yes.”
Tom gives Georg some thinking time, staying quiet so the older actor can sort through his own thoughts and reply when he’s ready.
“So, you and Bill are engaged.” Georg sounds musing. “Then, you obviously still love her?”
“Yes, I do. But I’m in love with you as well,” Tom admits, lifting his lashes and shyly meeting the other man’s eyes. This is the first time Tom has said it out loud.
Hearing that stuns Georg into silence again. He’s almost afraid to believe it, afraid of being wounded again.
As if knowing what Georg is thinking, Tom crawls over, kneels on the floor in front of Georg and takes the second male’s fingers, linking them together with his own tattooed ones, seriousness written all over his features.
“Georg, I’m so sorry that I caused you pain. I’m so sorry that I couldn’t tell you the truth. If you give me one more final chance, I’ll never hurt you again as long as I live, I swear it,” Tom says softly. “I couldn’t say this five years ago but I loved you back then. And I still love you now.”
Receiving those words, Georg’s broken heart immediately heals up and glows with sweet, radiant emotion, spilling into his chest and bringing a lump to his throat. He closes his eyes and whispers, “Thank you, Tom. I needed to hear that. For so long I thought I imagined everything between us.”
“Well, it was real,” the bearded actor confirms. His eyes hold a glimmer of optimism. “So, is that a yes?”
“I...don’t know.” Georg falters, knowing that this whole proposal solves all the problems they had in the past but that it could also create new ones in the future. “What if this thing...what if it doesn’t work out? I couldn’t bear to lose you twice.”
“You won’t,” Tom answers with surety. “We lost each other once, but you won’t lose me again, I promise. I need you in my life and I’m not letting you go this time.”
Georg pulls Tom close in a tight hug. “I need you too, kid. So, so much.”
Tom receives the hug with a sigh, melting into Georg’s well-muscled form and reveling in the handsome man’s strength and warmth, feeling safe and sheltered back in Georg’s arms.
“I like the idea of us all being partners,” Georg admits. “But what if Bill gets jealous when she sees you and me together?”
Tom replies with certainty, “She won’t. Bill is not the jealous type at all - she can’t wait to see us together. In fact, the thought of you and me in bed turns her on like you wouldn’t believe. She thinks it’s super-hot and asks me to tell her about stuff we did all the time.”
“Okay, that’s good,” Georg grants, imagining other potential issues that may arise from him joining a love triangle. “But what about when you guys get married?”
“Nothing will change. You can come with us on our honeymoon. There’s this place in the Maldives that we’ve booked – it’s awesome and private and really relaxing,” the talented guitarist enthuses. “You’ll have a great time with us, guaranteed.”
Trying to visualize past the honeymoon stage, Georg asks, “What if Bill wants kids with you one day?”
“She may not be able to have any,” Tom admits, “not after the chemo and radiation therapy. However, she did freeze some of her eggs, just in case. If a kid ever happens, then you can be Uncle G.”
The older man blinks, trying to imagine some toddler with brown eyes calling him that. One of his sisters has two children so he’s already an uncle but it would be weird to be called that by a kid that’s not actually related to him. Then again, he could probably get used to it. Kids do seem to like him for some reason.
“Don’t worry, Georg,” comes Tom’s assured response, “we’ve thought about all of this already and we won’t suddenly unfriend you, not for any reason. We want you to be a part of our lives. All of it – the good, the bad, the crazy.”
After a pondering pause, the more mature male asks, “Will you tell your friends and family about me?”
Firmly, Tom shakes his head. “No. They’ll be told that you’re a good friend but nobody needs to know any intimate details. It’s nobody’s business but ours what we do when we’re alone.”
Voicing another concern of Georg’s, Tom pre-empts, “And if you ever meet someone else, Georg, or if you ever want out of the arrangement, just say so and you can leave. We won’t make you stay if you’re uncomfortable. We won’t force you to do anything you don’t want to do. We just want to share our love with you, that’s all.”
Still considering the pros and cons of entering a three-way romance, Georg remains quiet but Tom keeps talking, trying his hardest to convince his previous co-worker that this is the best solution for everybody.
“In case you’re worried about me fooling around with other guys, don’t be. I’ve done that and you’re the only guy I want now,” Tom pledges, hugging Georg tighter and breathing in the salty, musky scent of him. “Bill’s my girl but you’re my man. You always have been.”
“And you’ve always been my boy,” Georg answers, placing a kiss in the younger actor’s dark hair, feeling humbled and honoured that he’s been asked to join such a special relationship. “I’m yours, Tom. Yours and Bill’s, for as long as you both want me.”
“You’re saying yes?”
“Yes. I’m saying yes.” Georg smiles through the curtain of his long hair. “Being with the two of you is going to be a wild fucking ride but I can’t wait to try it.”
Tom grins and then breaks out into laughter, kissing Georg on the mouth over and over again in happiness, the reunited partners professing how much they love each other in between kisses. Ernie, still lying on the floor, gives a grumble as if he’s bored with all this syrupy sappiness and the pair of men glance his way. Georg rubs his dog’s belly with his foot.
“Sorry, Ernie. Forgot you were still here, buddy.”
Georg gives his pet’s belly one more rub and then focuses back on Tom. “Do you still have the bracelet I gave you?”
“Course I still have it,” Tom says, caressing Georg’s clean-shaven jaw line. “It’s in my bedroom drawer. I look at it sometimes. Bill thinks it’s awesome and wants you to make her one too. Actually, she wants you to make a fancy wooden ring for her nose.”
Georg chuckles. “I can do that.”
Tom smiles at his former co-star. “I missed your laugh. I missed everything about you, G.”
“I missed you too, kiddo. Although, with you being twenty-three years old now, I guess I can’t really call you that anymore.”
Touching one of Georg’s dimples with the pad of his thumb, Tom then traces around Georg’s sharply-sensual lips, wanting to be joined in passion with his older male lover, and his sweet Bill, the only two people he’ll ever need in his life from now on.
“You can call me whatever you like,” Tom grants, “as long as you kiss me again.”
Cradling Tom’s bearded face gently in his hands, Georg lowers his head and covers the musician’s pierced mouth with his own, this kiss soft and tender, promising to make up for all the kisses they’ve missed out on and more.
“Now,” Georg announces, flicking back his long, straight hair. “Let’s go see that wonderful, gorgeous girlfriend of yours and tell her the good news.”
“She’s gonna be your girlfriend too, Georg,” Tom reminds him.
“Yes, but she doesn’t know that yet.”
And so, after Georg pulls on a shirt and pair of pants, the two good-looking males leave Ernie to his doggy sleep, go out the door and walk down the hall. With a mixture of nerves and excitement, Tom leads Georg towards the hotel room where Billinda Kaulitz is waiting.
………
Bill is inside perched on the bed, hair now bleached a shade of blonde so pale it’s almost white. It’s clipped along the sides and longer on top, giving her something to play with and style in different ways. Her nose, ears and lips are full of silver rings and she has a lot of new tattoos. She still wears dark eye-makeup and shiny lip-gloss to enhance her feminine beauty and her skin is as soft and smooth as always. Her tall, slender figure is dressed in leather and lace, her top sheer enough to show off a bra filled with small, perfect breasts (one nipple pierced) and a large piece of colourful artwork inked across her chest. There is a tiny surgery scar on her throat, one you wouldn’t even know was there if you weren’t looking for it. Her voice is slightly deeper than it was before but that’s actually helped her singing become better. Since the cancer treatment ended, she has been working out in the gym and her once-fragile frame is strong and lithe with lean muscle, yet she has a few sexy curves left along her hips and butt. She’s sipping on a bottle of beer and tapping her booted foot impatiently.
“Come on, Tomi,” she mutters to herself. “Work your magic on him, baby.”
The doorknob eventually turns. Her lengthy black lashes lift and she glances up with anticipation. When she sees Tom and Georg standing in the doorway, Bill’s full pink mouth curves upwards, a chocolate beauty spot sitting just below that excited smile.
Eagerly, Bill springs to her feet and skips towards the two of them, her arms already opening for a warm, welcoming group hug.
Finally. Her men have arrived.
