As soon as Rebecca had walked back out to the ballroom where everyone was seated being served their meal, she felt the familiar rush of sickness that came whenever she was forced to do any form of public speaking. She walked backstage and headed to the nearest restroom. She quickly rushed in, emptying the sparse contents of her stomach, hating her nerves when it came to public speaking. She heard a light tapping on the door and frowned. She didn’t want anyone to see her like this, but she also knew that if she kept silent, the person would come in regardless.
“Yes?”
Rebecca didn’t turn as she heard the door open and someone walk in. It was only when she felt someone pull her hair back from her face that she turned to look and see who it was. She smiled as she saw that it was Spencer. Although the movement brought on another wave of sickness. She quickly turned and proceeded to empty what little had been left in her stomach into the toilet. She hated the idea of getting sick in front of someone, but didn’t see how to avoid it at the moment. She took the offered rag and wiped her face, giving Spencer a weary grin in thanks.
“Thanks, Spence. Sorry you had to sort of walk in on me getting sick.”
“No problem, Becca. I had come back here to grab something and heard someone in her sick, so I thought I would see if they needed any help. Are you okay?”
“Yeah, just the blasted public speaking nonsense.”
“Well, it didn’t look like you were nervous.”
“I wasn’t nervous. It’s just a reflex thing, when I have to speak in front of people, I get sick. I can’t explain why, I just know I hate it.”
“Sorry to hear that. Are you okay to head back out there to eat or do you need to just sit for a little bit?”
“I think I’m okay. Care to escort a lady to her dinner?”
Rebecca laughed lightly, feeling a little better, and giggled as Spencer hopped up, holding out his arm to help her up.
“Of course. I would love to escort such a pretty lady to her meal. Shall we?”
Rebecca stood slowly and let Spencer take her arm, as she was still a little woozy from having just emptied her entire stomach. She was thankful that she hadn’t fainted like she sometimes did when sick from the public speaking. That would certainly be graceful, not. She caught a glimpse of her reflection in the mirror before heading out of the bathroom and groaned at how pale she looked. Spencer looked down at her worriedly, mistaking the groan for something worse.
“You sure you’re okay, Becca?”
“Yeah, I just saw how pale I looked, which is never a good thing.”
Rebecca knew that, like the rest of her family, she had been given a naturally tan skintone, so whenever she was pale, that generally meant something bad. Especially when it involved having just emptied all her food. Because now she knew that she would have to eat, aside from the fact that she absolutely hated anything that they might serve at the meal tonight, and doubted that any more than two of the courses would be vegetarian.
“Well come on and we’ll get you some food. That will hopefully make you feel better.”
She smiled up at Spencer, still leaning lightly on him, as her legs were still a little shaky. God, she hated the reactions. As soon as they reached the ballroom again, she saw the worried glance that her brother gave her, knowing from experience what the paleness meant.
“One lovely damsel in distress, delivered in as best health as could be managed. IM or call me when you get home to let me know that you’re not deathly ill, Becca.”
Rebecca smiled at the friendly kiss on her cheek, nodding as Spencer went back over to the table where he was seated. She turned back to the others at the table, smiling at the concern she saw in their faces.
“I’m fine guys. Just the normal post public speaking nerves. Thankfully I had a friendly wandering knight to help.”
She laughed as she joked about Spencer being a knight. The others laughed as well, the joke seeming to dispel some of the nervous tension in the air. Patrick wrapped an arm around the back of her chair, leaving a light kiss on her cheek.
“Glad to know that my beautiful girlfriend had help from a noble knight. I shall find a way to show my gratitude to Sir Knight, after I am assured that milady is back in full health again.”
“Well it’s good to know that you two finally came to your senses and decided to make it official.”
Rebecca laughed at Ryan’s response. She shook her head playfully, a smirk on her face.
“You’re not too bright when it comes to relationships either, Ry. I remember having to help you into dating a certain girl.”
“Yes but at least I wasn’t as pig-headed as you two have been. It certainly didn’t take as many people with me as it has taken you. I believe you might have had most of the guys trying to get you two to see common sense before the end.”
Rebecca laughed and shrugged as she delicately took a sip of the soup that had been placed before her, after being assured that it was a vegetarian dish. The liquid slid down her throat and settled easily in her stomach. Well that was certainly a good sign, she hoped. She noticed a slightly bothered look on Pete’s face and reached out patting him on the arm, fighting not to laugh as he jumped.
“What’s wrong, Petey?”
“Nothing. I just had something on my mind. And listen, Beckanne, I’m sorry that you got sick because of the public speaking. I shouldn’t have asked you. I know that it makes you sick.”
“Petey, it’s okay. Really. I didn’t die, or even faint. I’m okay, so don’t worry about it. Now, who has some good juicy news to share?”
