Carrie could barely hear the knocking on the door as all she could focus on was the feeling of Kelly’s body pressed against hers and her heart practically beating out of her chest. That lasted a few more seconds as the knocking became increasingly louder until Matt started yelling through the door.
“CARRIE! COME ON! GOTTA GO,” he kept pounding the door. “YOU HAVE A SHOW TO FINISH!”
Kelly pulled back, laughing. “He’s right, babe. You go finish and we can continue this when you get back,” she winked.
Carrie smiled, trying her best to catch her breath. “Uh, well, it won’t be immediately,” she took Kelly’s hands. “Steph is leaving tonight and I promised I’d see her to the airport since I have a day off tomorrow.”
“Oh,” Kelly pulled back, getting nervous. “So, does that mean…”
Carrie nodded. “Yep. She is still here. You can meet her if you want to,” she trailed off, clearly picking up on her girlfriend’s ambivalence.
“Well, I want to…” she smiled. “Come on,” she tugged on Carrie’s hand. “We gotta get you out there before Matt kills me and bans me from coming back here.”
Carrie laughed opening the door. “Yeah, well, I’m the boss. He can’t do that,” she giggled.
“FINALLY,” he sounded annoyed as he guided them back to the stage and handed Carrie her mic.
“Thank you all so much,” Carrie spoke to the audience as she walked on stage. “We hope you enjoyed the show and be safe.” She turned to the band as they started Paradise City.
Kelly took a discreet spot next to Matt, making sure to stay out of sight from the audience. “Thanks,” she smiled at him.
“What for,” he asked leaning closer to hear her over the band.
“Taking care of her,” she nodded towards Carrie.
“It’s my job,” he shrugged.
“No, seriously, thanks for keeping my secret and taking me backstage, even though I made y’all late.”
“It’s was fun,” Matt smiled. “She’s been so hyper today waiting for you to get here. It was kinda funny,” he laughed recalling the fact that the blonde would mention Kelly practically every 5 minutes.
Kelly sighed, almost blushing. “Sorry,” she laughed.
“Please,” Matt shook his head. “She’s like a sister, seeing her happy is great, ” he motioned to the stage. Carrie gave Kelly a huge smile as caught her eye walking back from the catwalk to the stage.
“She’s not the only one,” she waved slightly as she wrapped an arm around Matt, bobbing her head in time with the beat.
========
“Great show,” Kelly greeted her as she came right off the stage.
“Thanks,” Carrie smiled, taking the towel Matt handed her and dabbing her face. “I can’t wait to take this off,” she motioned to her makeup and drenched outfit.
Kelly smiled mischievously. “I can help with that…” she leaned and whispered.
“Um,” Carrie froze. “You are mean,” she pouted. “Steph, remember,” she lifted her eyebrows.
“Aw, boo,” Kelly frowned. “Ok. So, where is she?”
“Come,” Carrie guided them. “She’s in my dressing room, I think.”
The girls walked to the door of the dressing room, and sure enough, Stephanie was sitting on the couch when Carrie opened the door. Kelly trailed behind her as they walked into the room.
“Hey,” Stephanie greeted her.
“Hey,” Carrie walked up to grab a water bottle. “Did you get to watch the show?”
“Yeah,” Stephanie nodded, looking at Kelly who was quietly standing behind Carrie.
Carrie noticed, so she stepped to the side and brought her hand behind her, reaching for Kelly. “This,” she spoke bringing the Texan to her side, “is Kelly.”
“Hi,” Kelly smiled, shyly. She stood there doing her best to try to read Carrie’s sister, but she wasn’t sure what to think.
“Hello,” Stephanie nodded. “So,” she stood, “you’re the one,” she questioned.
“Steph,” Carrie shook her head. “Don’t start,” she warned.
“It’s ok, Care,” Kelly turned to Carrie, smiling as she felt the blonde wrapping a protective arm around her. “I know you don’t approve,” she sighed. “I understand that. But I care about your sister very much and I will do anything to make her happy.”
Stephanie sighed. “This is wrong. Do you know the risk you are taking?”
Kelly frowned. “Believe me. I know we are both putting ourselves at great risk, but I love Carrie. And I don’t want to spend the rest of my life wondering what could’ve been, but wasn’t because I was afraid of what people would say.”
Carrie locked eyes with Kelly, wiping a tear as she heard the honesty coming out of Kelly’s voice. “Steph, can’t you just try to understand? For me,” she pleaded.
Stephanie noticed the way Kelly clung to her sister, smiling and trying to soothe her. She took a deep breath, realizing that their connection was undeniable. She had been around Carrie’s past boyfriends, but there was something about the way her sister beamed that she hadn’t seen before. She couldn’t help but realize that her sister was in love, it was written all over her face. And while it wasn’t what she’d wanted for her, she couldn’t deny that she deserved to be happy. She walked wordlessly over to them. “You’re my baby sister, Care. I just want you to be happy.”
“I am,” Carrie smiled crookedly.
“Then, for you, I will.”
“Thanks,” Carrie whispered, moving from Kelly’s grasp to hug her sister.
“Do you guys want some time to talk,” Kelly asked quietly.
“No,” Stephanie answered as she took a step back. “It’s ok.”
“Yeah,” Carrie nodded in agreement.
“It’s good to meet part of Carrie’s family,” Kelly offered. “I know how much y’all mean to her.”
Carrie wrapped one arm around Kelly and the other one around Stephanie. “You both do,” her smile widened.
=========
“You got everything,” Carrie asked as they got out of the van at the airport.
“Yes,” Stephanie answered rolling her suitcase to the check-in line. “Seriously, Care,” she fussed looking at the large suitcase Kelly and Carrie were helping her bring along. “The kids don’t need all this stuff.”
“Aw, come on,” Carrie pouted. “What’s the point of all the traveling if I can’t get cool things for the kids?”
“You mean, other than the fact that it’s your job,” Stephanie laughed.
“Ok,” Carrie gave up. “I’ll give you that. No more spoiling of my nephews.”
Kelly laughed at the sisterly exchange. “It’s ok, Care, Alyssa gets the same way with me. I think it’s an older sister thing.”
“You know,” Stephanie chuckled. “She’s right,” she smiled slightly at Kelly. She was still having a hard time with thinking of her as her sister’s girlfriend, but she had to admit that Kelly was a pretty sweet girl, very friendly and funny.
Carrie caught the smile out of the corner of her eye and relaxed. Maybe Stephanie was starting to come around and things would get better. She thought they were making progress when her sister quizzed Kelly over dinner, just like she had every time she met anyone Carrie brought home.
“Well,” Stephanie spoke as she finished checking in her luggage. “That’s it. I guess I will see you for Thanksgiving,” she asked.
“Aren’t you guys coming to the Tulsa show,” Carrie frowned.
“Oh, right. Sorry I totally forgot. Yeah, Mom’s looking forward to it. We’ll all be there.”
“Good,” Carrie smiled. “There’s an off day in there, so I figured I could stay with Mom and Dad.”
Stephanie laughed. “They’ll love that.” The P.A. system announced that they were starting to board her flight. “Ok, sis, gotta get going. Have fun and be safe,” she hugged Carrie.
“I will,” the blonde chuckled. “See y’all in a few weeks.”
“Kelly,” Stephanie smiled. “It was good meeting you.”
“Thanks,” she returned the smile.
“Take care of her, would you? She works so hard sometimes,” Stephanie looked pointedly at Carrie.
The Texan laughed. “Well, I really can’t blame her ‘cause I’m the same way. But don’t worry,” she draped her arm over Carrie’s shoulder. “I’ll keep an eye on her for ya.”
“Hey,” Carrie poked her. “I’m right here…and I’m not a child.”
“No,” Stephanie chuckled. “But you are still my baby sister.”
“Oooh,” Kelly teased. “She told you.”
All three shared a laugh as Stephanie gave another quick hug and began walking to the security line.
“Bye,” she waved over her shoulder.
“So,” Carrie turned to Kelly. “Wanna head back to the tour bus?”
“What, no hotel?”
“No,” Carrie placed her arm around Kelly. “We’re leaving tonight.”
“Oh. So, tour bus, eh,” she wiggled her eyebrows.
Carrie laughed as they started walking back to their waiting van. “Yep,” she grinned innocently.
