"Hey, hey, Mr. Underwood," Kelly grinned from where she sat on the edge of the bottom row of bleachers. She motioned to the ground next to her. "Prime seating right here."
"Hey Kelly," Stephen smiled, adjusting his wheel chair to sit next to her. "How's our girl?"
"She seemed a little nervous when I was talking to her before the game," Kelly admitted. "But she looks good right now during warm ups."
"She'll be fine," he nodded. "So how have you been? I haven't seen you around in a while."
"Yea, I've been meaning to come visit to tell you hi, but I've just been really busy, and I don't want to cause any more tension or anything."
"Tension? What tension? I thought lunch went off perfectly the other day."
Kelly giggled, "What lunch were you at? Oh, I got your tickets for the play. I gave them to Carrie."
"Good," Stephen replied. "I can't wait."
"Oh, it's starting," Kelly's eyes lit up as she watched Carrie jog onto the field. "Go Carrie! Woo!!"
"That's my baby!" Stephen cheered loudly.
Kelly laughed, "You can see her blushing all the way from over here."

"You can't win 'em all All-star," Kelly shook her head, wrapping an arm around Carrie's shoulder.
"Or at least you can't win them all by yourself," Stephen smiled. "No offense Care Bear, but your team's not too good."
Carrie blushed as Kelly turned to her, mouthing 'Care Bear' with an amused expression.
"But hey, who's up for ice cream back home?"
"Sounds good, Dad," Carrie smiled. "We'll meet you there."
"See you in a few," he waved.
"It's driven by hand," Carrie explained as she and Kelly walked away.
"I was wondering," Kelly nodded. "But didn't want to ask..."
"Always feel free to ask," Carrie assured her as they got to her car.
"Ok," Kelly smiled as they got inside. "So...Care Bear, huh?"
"Ugh," Carrie groaned, rolling her eyes. "That's so not even cool."
"It's sweet," Kelly giggled. "And totally cute, which fits you perfectly."
"I hope no one else heard," Carrie shook her head.
"Nah, I don't think so."
"So, um, did my mom show up by any chance?"
"Well, no, not that I saw, but I mean, we were sitting in the front, and totally watching the game the whole time, so she might have, and we just missed her."
Carrie frowned, "It's ok. She didn't come."
"She might've," Kelly offered.
But Carrie shook her head, keeping her eyes on the road.
"That's what you were upset about this morning?" Kelly asked carefully.
"Yea, we got into this morning about her not coming to the game and some other stuff."
"Other stuff?"
"I told her she was full of shit."
Kelly choked back a laugh, "You what?"
"She made a comment about being the only one supporting the family, and I told her she was full of shit."
"Something tells me she didn't take that too well."
"Nope."
"Um, Care...your mom...I mean, she didn't like...she doesn't hit you or anything, right?"
"What? No. Oh gosh, no, Kell," Carrie shook her head. "Trust me, it's nothing like that."
"Ok," Kelly nodded. "Just making sure."
Carrie reached out, squeezing her knee gently.
"So what did she say when you told her that?" Kelly asked curiously.
"I don't know--something stupid."
"Must've been pretty stupid to have you as upset as you were this morning."
"I wasn't that upset."
"You kissed me, and told me I was good at being a friend," Kelly reminded with a smile.
"Well you are."
"You were upset."
Carrie frowned.
"Are you gonna tell me why, or do I have to force it out of you? I swear I'll tickle you...where the heck are we?" Kelly asked, looking around at the field they had parked in.
Carrie sighed, "You frustrate me sometimes, you know that?"
"I do?" Kelly asked, slightly hurt as Carrie turned in her seat to face her.
"You do," she nodded. "You don't know how to let things go."
"Care, I'm sorry. I just don't like it when you're upset."
"Ever think that the reason I'm upset is because of you?"
"Because I frustrate you," Kelly's eyes fell.
"Yes. Because you frustrate me. Because you're so dang nice, and caring, and generous, and funny, and just such a sweetheart, and my mom can't see that, and I don't understand why. I don't understand why she says the things she says about you, and I don't understand why she doesn't like you when everybody else seems to love you, and that frustrates the hell out of me. And it frustrates me even more because you don't deserve any of it, and you always forgive her for it, when I have no idea how you do it because I have trouble forgiving her for it."
"So, I take it she said something about me this morning," Kelly replied cautiously.
Carrie nodded.
"Can I ask what?"
"She said that I got my sudden attitude from hanging out with you, or more specifically from the charity case that I insist on bringing around."
Kelly nodded, turning back to look out the front window.
"Kelly, I'm sorry. That's why I didn't want to tell you."
"I'm not a charity case, you know?" she replied softly.
"I know," Carrie assured her.
Kelly's jaw clenched.
Carrie pushed her seat back, giving them more room as she reached over for the short Texan.
Kelly allowed her to pull her onto her lap and wrap her arms around her. "I'm sorry I frustrate you."
"You know I didn't mean it like that," Carrie replied, resting her forehead against the other girl's cheek. "I'm sorry my mom's such a witch."
Kelly sighed, turning her head to kiss the tip of Carrie's nose, "What have I said about apologizing for your parents?"
Carrie frowned, wrapping her arms around her tighter.
"Why don't you just come stay at my place?" Kelly offered gently. "You can just call your dad and tell him we'll take a rain check, ok?"
"Yea," she nodded.

"Hey, so where'd you disappear to yesterday?" Ashley asked as she joined Kelly on a bench in the courtyard after lunch.
"It was Carrie's game yesterday," Kelly reminded.
"What'd you do after?"
"She came stay at my place. We just goofed off. She was having a rough day, so I think she needed that."
"She had a bad game?"
"Nah, she had a great game. She's really good," Kelly smiled. "The rest of the team, however...well, you've seen them play."
"Yea," Ashley laughed shortly. "So, what are you doing today?"
"Working."
"Tomorrow?"
"Working."
"When do you have free time?"
"Um...Friday."
"You wanna do something?"
"Yea, sure. You wanna call Jebbie and all them and hang out?"
"Um, actually I was hoping it could just be us. I mean, we haven't really hung out since that stupid fight, so I thought we should."
"Yea, sure," Kelly shrugged, smiling as Carrie walked up to them. "Hey All-star. You got lost finding the bathroom?"
"Shut up," Carrie laughed. "There was a line."
"I told you not to go to the one by the cafeteria. You should've gone to the one by the auditorium, no one uses that one for lunch."
"I've never been to the auditorium," Carrie reminded, sitting on the ground in front of her.
"I'll have to show you next time," Kelly laughed, ruffling her hair.
Carrie grinned, leaning back on the short Texans' knees, looking up at her.
"You're such a nerd," Kelly teased, pushing her face playfully.

"So, you're excited about the play starting next week?" Carrie asked as they rode in her car.
"Fifty-fifty," Kelly nodded.
"You're gonna have to kiss him eventually," Carrie pointed out.
"Says who?"
"You're right, let's just end the scene before the kiss, that'll show the audience how in love y'all are."
"I wish he was you," she grumbled, crossing her arms.
Carrie choked, "You what?"
"Not like that," Kelly rolled her eyes. "I just meant that I'd already kissed you, so we're over the obstacle of the first kiss, so it wouldn't be quite as nerve racking."
"Ah..." Carrie nodded. "But still nerve racking?"
"Isn't every kiss nerve racking?"
"Hm, the first ones are," Carrie agreed. "And if the first one's good, then the rest are too, but in a good way."
Kelly smiled, "You've had a lot of good nerve racking kisses?"
"Not that many," she shrugged.
"Mine was the best, though, right?"
"Totally," Carrie grinned.
"I know," Kelly beamed.
Carrie laughed as she pulled into Ashley's driveway. "So, do you want me to stay within a five mile radius in case y'all get into another fight?"
"Um, nah, I think it'll be good. She's still been acting a little off, but she doesn't seem to be mad at me at least, but thanks for the offer."
Carrie nodded, "Alright, babe."
"Bye," Kelly smiled, getting out of the car.

Ashley looked up, surprised as Kelly walked into her room, "I was just about to come pick you up."
"Oh, I thought I was meeting you here."
"How'd you get here?"
"Carrie," Kelly shrugged, hopping on her bed.
"You two seem to be getting along really well."
"She's pretty cool," she agreed.
"So, y'all are over all those huge blow outs y'all had when she first moved here?" Ashley asked curiously.
"I wouldn't call them huge blow outs," Kelly laughed.
"I don't know, both of y'all were pretty upset."
"High school drama," she waved it off. "No big deal."
"And you and I...just high school drama?"
"Yea, of course. Oh, hey, the play starts next week, you're coming right?"
Ashley sighed, "Of course, wouldn't miss it."
"Cool," Kelly grinned. "You know, I don't think you've missed any of my performances. I'd be totally lost with out you."
"Yea," she agreed.
"So, what's the plans for tonight?"
"Oh, well, actually, I wanted to talk to you about something."
"Ok, cool, what's up?" Kelly asked, watching as Ashley sat down next to her. She turned so that they were facing each other.
"Kelly, you and I have been good friends for a while now, right?"
"Yep."
"And I mean, we--we tell each other everything."
"Sure."
"I like someone," Ashley said carefully.
"That's the big secret?" Kelly giggled. "Shoot, I thought you'd run over somebody or something."
Ashley frowned.
"Sorry, I'm sorry," she apologized. "So...who's the lucky guy?"
"You really are clueless, aren't you?"
"About what?"
"Kelly," Ashley took her hand.
"Yea?" she asked curiously, suddenly noticing the difference between her best friend's hand and Carrie's. Ashley's was bigger than her own, and it held hers tightly, keeping it there. Carrie's hand was the same size as her own, and it wasn't so much as one holding the other, more as the both of them connecting, kinda like a puzzle, and the Oklahoma native always held her hand securely, but never forced it to stay.
"Kelly," Ashley said firmly, interrupting her thoughts.
"Yea, sorry. I'm listening," she assured her.
"This person I like...you know them very well."
"Ash," Kelly smiled. "Come on, just tell me. What's the big deal? It's just a crush."
"You know what? Never mind," Ashley let her hand go, standing back up.
"What? What did I do?"
"Nothing, Kelly. As always, you're perfectly innocent."
"What does that mean?"
"You know, I'm really not feeling well. Maybe you should just go."
Kelly sighed, "Fine. Can I borrow your phone?"
Ashley pointed to the cordless phone in the corner of her room.
Kelly picked it up, dialing quickly.
"Hello?" the voice answered curiously.
"Hey Care."
"I'm turning around," Carrie replied, knowingly. "I'll be there in a few minutes."
"Thanks."
"Who was that?" Ashley asked as Kelly grabbed her bag, walking to the front of the house.
"Carrie. She's coming pick me up."
"Why'd you call her? I would've brought you."
"You just said you didn't want to hang out," Kelly replied, confused.
"You know that's not what I want."
"Well, then what do you want?"
"I want you to stop being so damn blind."
"What are you talking about? I swear, you're not making any sense at all today."
"Actually, no, you know what I want? I want you to stop hanging out with Carrie."
"What?" Kelly raised an eyebrow.
"I'm serious," Ashley replied firmly.
"You're gonna forbid me from hanging out with someone?" she asked, laughing in disbelief.
"Who's friendship is more important to you?"
"Ok, now you're just being ridiculous," Kelly looked out the window to see Carrie's car pulling up. "I'm just gonna go so you can get your head back on straight."
"No, Kelly, I mean it. If our friendship means anything to you, you're not gonna leave with her."
"What's so wrong with her?" Kelly asked. "She has been nothing but nice to you."
"I don't like her."
"Why not?"
"Because you're spending way too much time with her."
"Ok, I get that we haven't hung out as often as normal, but this jealousy thing has gotten out of hand."
"I am not jealous," Ashley replied firmly.
"You're sure as hell acting like it, when there's no reason for you to be. You're still my best friend, Ash."
"That's just it, Kelly. I don't want to be your friend!"
Kelly took a step back, the hurt evident in her eyes.
"No, that's not how I meant it," Ashley said quickly.
There was a knock on the door, before Carrie stepped inside, "Hey Baby, you ready to go?"
"I don't remember inviting you in," Ashley turned on her.
Carrie shrunk back.
"No," Kelly replied firmly, stepping between them. "I don't give a shit about whatever problem you have with me right now, but you are not going to be mean to her. I am not going to stand for this bull shit, Ash. Now, I'm leaving with Carrie, and when you get over whatever the hell kind of mood you've been in lately, let me know."
Carrie looked between them, completely lost.
"Come on, Care," Kelly gave her a smile, taking her hand and leading her out of the house.
Carrie gave her hand a gentle squeeze, causing her to relax a bit as they walked to the car.
