Kate walked into the living room, cocking her head when she found Ashley sitting with Jill on the sofa, "You're back?"
"Yea," Ashley nodded.
"Since when?"
"About twenty minutes ago...what were you doing?"
"I was listening to some stuff on my computer; I had my earphones in," she shook her head. "Where's Kelly? Is she ok?"
"She's in her room, and not really."
Kate turned to walk to the short Texan's room.
Ashley jumped up, hurrying to stop her, "Whoa."
"She's upset...why are you just sitting there, doing nothing?" she asked, confused.
"Because I'm her best friend, and I know her," Ashley put her arm out as Kate took a step closer to the door.
Kate's eyes widened, at the soft sound coming from the room, "She's crying."
"I know."
"Well, move your arm," Kate tried to push her away.
"Would you shush," Ashley took her arm, pulling her back. "She's on the phone with her mom right now. She doesn't want to be bothered. The door's locked, so you wouldn't be able to get in if I moved, anyway."
Kate looked back and forth between her and the door.
"Just give her a little while, ok?"
"She's crying?" Kate asked softly.
"She's gonna be ok," Ashley replied, letting her arm go.
Kate chewed on her bottom lip.
"She's talking to her mom," Ashley explained, her voice turning gentle. "That's who she needs to be talking to right now. When she needs you, she'll let you know."
Kate nodded, leaning back against the hall wall behind her.
Ashley's head turned at the sound of the door unlocking behind her.
Kate looked at her curiously.
"That's your cue."
"My cue?"
Ashley nodded, "Trust me...it's you she wants right now."
Kate stood up straight, taking a deep breath as Ashley moved out of her way. She walked to the door to Kelly's room, opening it carefully before walking it inside. She closed it, turning to find Kelly sitting indian style on her bed, as she wiped the tears off her cheeks. Kate slowly walked to the bed watching her carefully, "Can I..."
Kelly nodded, looking up as Kate climbed onto the bed.
"Hey," she greeted softly, sitting in front of her.
"Hey," Kelly's voice cracked.
Kate fought back her own tears, "What happened?"
Kelly bit her lip, her head falling.
Kate reached out, raising her face so that she could look at her.
"I fired Jeff..."
Kate nodded.
"It's been all over the media the past couple days..."
"What has?"
"Some comment he made about Clive telling me to shut up and sing."
"He doesn't understand you at all, does he?"
She shook her head, sniffing, "I was right a while back...when I thought Jeff was the one that started this whole mess with the album."
Kate smoothed her thumb over her cheek, brushing the tears away, "I'm glad you fired him."
Kelly's jaw tensed as even more tears formed.
"Kelly, what's wrong?" Kate asked worriedly. "What happened?"
"He, um...I-I found out how he got the label to move up the album."
"How?" Kate questioned, not sure that she wanted to know the answer from how upset the other girl seemed.
"He kinda blackmailed the label."
"With what?"
"My coming out..."
"He what?" her jaw dropped. "Oh my God...did they know?"
"A couple did," Kelly nodded. "After he found out for sure last summer, Jeff thought it was a good idea that they knew."
"That's not his choice," Kate shook her head. "I can't believe he'd out you to them, and then threaten them with it. How could he use that as a bargaining chip?"
Kelly shrugged, struggling to keep from crying harder.
"Oh, Kelly, I'm sorry," Kate reached out, pulling her onto her lap. "I didn't mean to rub it in or anything..."
Kelly shook her head, burying her face in the backup singer's neck as she hugged her tightly.
Kate rubbed her back soothingly, "I'm sorry that this happened, and I'm sorry that he did this to you, and I'm so sorry that he broke your trust like this. I know that me apologizing isn't really going to help, but I'm so so sorry that you're having to go through this."
"I don't know what to do," Kelly whispered, her voice shaky. "There's so much stuff going on...the album...the tour...I need a manager..."
"You're gonna find one," Kate assured. "But don't let the album and tour mess with you...just take your time with this, ok?"
She nodded.
"And I mean, you knew that you were getting ready to fire him, and I know you're a smart girl. I'm sure you've already started looking into a new manager."
She nodded again.
"See? That's good. So at least you have some idea of who you're looking at. And this isn't the first time you've changed management, right? You've done this before."
"Yea," she sniffed, her breath coming in short gasps as her tears started to subside.
"Good, so you know what to do. You know what to look for this time. Take your time and think it all out. I just don't want you rushing into anything with someone just because things are crazy right now...you don't want to have another ass in control of your career."
Kelly nuzzled into her neck.
"You're going to be just fine," Kate said softly as she continued to rub her back.
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"Being patient."
"Ashley had to pull me away from the door. I wanted to bust it down when I heard you crying--that's not very patient."
"I meant once you were in here...you wanted to bust the door down?"
"The thought crossed my mind, yes."
"Why didn't you?"
"Ashley can hurt me...and she said that you were on the phone with your mom and that was who you needed at the moment, and I remembered you saying how close you and your mom are..."
"You're patient," Kelly nodded. "You're just still learning."
Kate wrapped her arms around her, holding her close, feeling the Texan relax in her arms, "You're out to your mom?"
"She's the first person I told."
"Really?"
"Yep."
"I thought Ashley would've been the first."
"Remember how I called my mom after I slept with Graham?"
"Yea..."
"Well, I went visit her after I slept with Claire. I was so scared...I needed my momma."
Kate's heart melted. She tilted her head down, kissing Kelly's hair.
"I needed this too," Kelly admitted, taking a deep breath.
"Yea?"
She nodded, snuggling into her neck even more.
"You talked to Ashley, though, right?"
"Yea."
"And your mom?"
"Yea."
"And you still needed this?"
"Yea...this is different."
"How?"
"I was still crying after talking to Ash and my mom," Kelly pointed out. "But now I'm not."
Kate smiled softly, kissing the top of her head, "Well, I'm glad I was here, then."
"Me too," she nodded. "I get why you wanted to stay like this earlier...it's nice."
"Yea."
"Can we stay like this a little longer?"
"As long as you want," Kate replied, leaning back against the pillows on the bed.
+++++++++++++
"And after we sang for the class, everybody came up to us telling us how ridiculous our voices sounded together and that we should sing together more often," Kate explained, finishing the story of how she and Jill became a duo as she leaned back against the pillows with Kelly curled up on her lap, her head resting against her shoulder.
"How does the writing work?" Kelly asked curiously. "Like do y'all write together?"
"Sometimes. Most of the time though, one of us will come up with the idea of a song and get like the basics of it before bringing it to the other. An easy way to tell who's song it was is by who sings the first verse."
"Whoever sings the first verse came up with the song?"
"Most of the time, but not always. If it's something we wrote together, like the whole thing, then Jill usually takes the first verse."
"Why?"
"Her voice is stronger."
"Her voice is louder," Kelly corrected. "Louder and stronger are two different things."
Kate shook her head.
"I love your voice--it's very soothing."
"So, in other words, I put you to sleep?"
"Sometimes, but not in a bad way," she laughed softly. "It's just very...it's sweet and comfortable and tender and kinda vulnerable and I don't know...it definitely fits you well; I really like it."
"Well, thank you. A comment like that, coming from you, has to be like the ultimate for a singer, right?"
"I don't see why. I sing well...that doesn't mean I have like magical ears or anything."
"Who wouldn't want to get a compliment from the best?"
"I'm not the best," Kelly rolled her eyes.
"You are if I say you are, so shush."
She giggled, playing with the hem of Kate's sleeve.
Kate smiled.
"You know, any other job, you'd so be fired for telling your boss to shush."
"Any other job, I'd probably sue my boss for being on me like this."
Kelly stiffened.
Kate wrapped her arms around her, keeping her from getting up, "It was a joke."
"I know," she frowned.
"Don't," Kate replied. "Don't get like that. It was a joke, and it was stupid, and I'm sorry."
Kelly sighed, resting her head back on her shoulder.
"I wish the whole work thing wouldn't bother you so much."
"Why?" Kelly asked curiously.
"Because then I'd be able to tease you about it," she shrugged.
Kelly laughed softly, "Maybe I'll get there one day."
"I'll make sure to write down all my jokes so I remember them come that day."
Kelly smiled, "You know, I actually got the strangest satisfaction from you shushing me just now."
"You're totally a freak in the bedroom, aren't you?"
"Not like that," Kelly laughed loudly.
Kate grinned at the warmth in it.
"I meant--and I know I'm gonna sound like a stuckup ass by saying this--but I meant the fact that I'm Kelly Clarkson. I'm a world famous singer. I have sold millions of albums. Nobody shushes me."
"Yea, well, I'm Kate Rapier, and I really don't give a damn how many albums you've sold because I'll shush you whenever I darn well please."
Kelly's smile grew, "I know."
"Hence the satisfaction?"
"Hence the satisfaction," she nodded.
"You know, you've got to be one of the strangest superstars out there. I mean, not that I know any others, but still...you've got to be up there on the strange list."
"Why do you think we get along so well? We're like two peas in a pod."
Kate giggled, "Whatever."
"Whatever," Kelly mocked, playfully.
"Mature...real mature..."
"Hey, mature is one thing I never claimed to be."
"True."
"Besides, where's the fun in being mature, anyway?"
"I have no clue. When I was five I determined I wasn't going to get any older," Kate replied. "I didn't want to leave kindergarten after I found out you didn't have naps in first grade."
Kelly laughed, "What is with that, right? I mean, who made the decision that all of a sudden because you're six years old you don't need a nap anymore? Hell, I still need naps, or I get cranky."
"That's because according to Ashley you don't sleep well."
"I don't," Kelly admitted.
"You never get up when I sleep with you," Kate noted.
"I wake up, I just don't get up and move around and waste time playing games on my computer and stuff."
"Why not?"
She shrugged, "I don't know. Because I like laying next to you? And I guess since I just lay there and don't get up, it's easier for me to fall right back to sleep."
"You said my voice puts you to sleep sometimes..."
"Yea, when I'm having trouble falling asleep, I'll put some noise on. If I'm out on the road, I'll put this CD I have of like thunderstorm sounds because it reminds me of Texas. Or sometimes I'll listen to certain songs to help me calm me down a bit."
"So you listen to our stuff to help you fall asleep?"
"Like I said: your voice is soothing."
"You're sweet."
"You're cute."
"Haven't we talked about this compliment thing? You don't even register compliments, I swear. You just spit one out right back without sitting back and soaking it in like you should."
Kelly laughed softly, "Sorry."
"It's ok. Now let's try this again...you're sweet."
Kelly sat in silence, giving a moment for the compliment to soak in.
"There you go," Kate smiled.
"You're cute."
"Ugh..." she groaned.
Kelly grinned, "What? I gave it time like you said. I appreciated it very much. I just still thought you were cute and that you should know that."
"You're hopeless."
She shrugged, wrapping her arms around her.
"That? That you'll accept, but you won't accept a compliment?"
Kelly nuzzled her neck softly.
Kate smiled, "Getting tired?"
"A little."
"It's been a long day."
"Yea..."
"You want to lay down with me?"
Kelly nodded.
"Ok," Kate kept an arm around her, pulling the blankets out from under them with her other hand before laying down, taking the Texan with her. She could feel her squirming on top of her, getting comfortable.
"I'm not squishing you, am I?" Kelly asked, as Kate pulled the blankets back up around them before wrapping both of her arms around her once more.
"Not even close," Kate assured, kissing the top of her head.
"Kate?" Kelly asked after a moment of silence.
"Yea?"
"Do you think...would you sing for me to help me fall asleep?" she asked, almost shyly. "It's just that it's been a long day, and I have a lot on my mind--"
"I'd be happy to sing for you," Kate cut her off, kissing the top of her head again. "Just close your eyes and relax. And don't worry about any of that mess from today. It'll still be there for you to deal with later. Right now you can just relax. I got you tonight, ok?"
Kelly nodded, closing her eyes, feeling her body relaxing as Kate's soft voice filled the air around them.
++++++++++
"Hey," Kelly whispered, brushing Kate's bangs out of her face.
Kate's eyes opened groggily, "Hey..."
"Mornin'."
Kate smiled at her accent, "Did you sleep well?"
"I slept great. You?"
She nodded.
"Good," she smiled, tracing a finger along her jaw.
"Why are you up so early?"
"We're going to Nashville."
"Right now?"
"The plane leaves in two hours."
"Why?"
"I need to get outta L.A."
"Why not Texas?"
"Because I have some work to do, and it'll be easier to get it done in Nashville than in Texas."
Kate nodded, her eyes moving over Kelly's face. She pouted.
"What's wrong?"
"You just got here."
"I know, and I already feel like I've been here too long."
Kate's pout deepened.
"You're cute when you're tired," Kelly soothed her thumb across the blonde's chin, right below her bottom lip.
"Where are you gonna stay?"
"We're gonna stay in a hotel."
"But you don't like hotels."
"I know. I already have Jay looking for an apartment for until I can find a more permanant place."
"And you have to leave this morning? You can't wait until this afternoon?"
"Why? Do you have something you need to do before we go?" Kelly smiled, wondering how long it was going to take for her to catch on.
"No, well, I mean, I was thinking maybe we could have another guitar session."
"Well, your guitar is welcome to come to Nashville too."
"How is that going to do me any good?"
"Kate..." Kelly said gently.
"Yea?"
"I'm inviting you to come with us to Nashville."
"Oh..."
"Oh," Kelly nodded, laughing softly.
"What about Jill?"
"Ashley went with her back to y'alls apartment. They're packing a bag for each of you."
"They're packing a bag for me?"
"Yea."
"What if I had said I didn't want to go?"
"And break my heart? Never."
Kate giggled, "It wouldn't break your heart."
"It would," Kelly nodded, sliding their hands together. "And I don't think it would ever recover from the pain of it."
Kate smiled, stroking her cheek softly, "Have I ever told you how happy you make me?"
"Hopefully extremely happy, because I really would love for you to come with us."
"Well, I guess you're lucky that you make me extremely happy, then."
Kelly grinned, bringing her hand to her lips and kissing it, "Do you wanna help me pack?"
"Lazy."
"No, I just suck at it, and Ashley always fusses because my clothes end up all wrinkled."
"Well, I'll gladly help you if it keeps you safe from the wrath of Ashley."
"Cool," Kelly smiled, rolling off of her and hopping off the bed before turning to help her down as well.
++++++++++
"So how sneaky do you think you are?" Ashley asked, walking into Kelly's hotel room from hers through the adjoining door.
Kelly smiled innocently, as she sat in the middle of the king-sized bed flipping through the television channels.
"Where is she?"
"Who?"
"Kate."
"Fixing her stuff in the bathroom. I told her she might as well get her stuff settled. Jay booked the rooms for at least two weeks, I think, so even if we have to go somewhere, we'll just come back here after. So why am I sneaky?"
"You get Jill and I a room with two full sized beds that's connected to you and Kate's to try and make us think that your room is the same?"
Kelly grinned, "It worked long enough to get y'all to agree to the room assignments."
"And Kate doesn't have a problem sharing a bed with you for the next two weeks or so?"
"She hasn't complained yet."
"Yes, but those have all been short time spans."
Kelly shrugged it off, "She didn't even react to the bed."
"And why should I?" Kate asked, walking into the bedroom.
Kelly smiled at her, "Got everything settled?"
"Yep, what's next?"
"Well, I need to call into a station to do a radio interview real quick, but after I think we're all gonna go walk around a bit and see where we're at?" Kelly looked at Ashley for confirmation.
Ashley nodded, "Yea, and I could definitely use some lunch since we skipped breakfast, so we're gonna see if we can find a good restaurant around here."
"Sounds good," Kate nodded, crawling onto the bed beside Kelly.
"You wanna stay for the interview?" Kelly asked.
"If that's ok with you."
"Yea, of course. Just no talking, ok?"
"Ok," she smiled.
"Ash?" Kelly turned to her.
Ashley smirked, "I'll just wait with Jill."
"Ok," Kelly nodded, watching her carefully, her eyes narrowing at her when she mouthed the word 'sneaky' as soon as Kate looked away before walking back into her hotel room.
"So y'all were talking about me?" Kate raised an eyebrow.
"Yea," Kelly laughed softly. "About our sleeping arrangements."
"They don't think that even if we had a room with two beds, we'd still end up sharing one?"
Kelly grinned mischievously.
"Shush," Kate laughed, pushing her playfully. "I meant to like talk and stuff. We talk a lot at night, and it's easier to do that when I'm right next to you."
"And that's the only reason you like sleeping in the same bed as me?" Kelly smirked.
Kate blushed softly, "Well, you are really adorable when you sleep, and that's fun waking up to...and you're a really good cuddler."
"Mmhmm."
"Kelly," Kate fussed, giggling.
"What? I know you like sleeping in the same bed as me because it gives you an excuse to touch me...you don't have to be ashamed to admit it."
Kate rolled her eyes as her cheeks turned a darker shade of pink.
"I'm right, aren't I?" Kelly asked, playing with Kate's fingers that were resting against the bed between them. "You know how tired I get, so you figured you'd just take advantage of me at my weakest...you should be ashamed."
"You act like you would be totally opposed to me taking advantage of you," Kate laughed.
"I would not be opposed in the least bit," her fingers crawled up the taller girl's arm. "I just wanna hear you admit it."
"Admit it?"
"Admittance is the first step to recovery," she nodded.
"Who said I wanted to recover?"
Kelly's heart stopped.
Kate smiled, moving her hand to the other side of Kelly as she leaned to her, whispering in her ear, "You think you're the only one who knows how to play this game?"
Kelly's jaw twitched, "Well so far, I'm the only one that's been playing."
"That's just what I want you to believe."
"God, I love when you get fiesty."
Kate giggled next to her ear.
Kelly bit her bottom lip hard, "You so don't play fair."
"Me?" Kate laughed, pulling her closer and straddling her lap. "Let's not forget who's favorite position this is."
Kelly smiled, "How is that not fair?"
"No, my bad," Kate wrapped an arm around her, laying her back on the bed. "This is your favorite position."
Kelly licked her lips as Kate hovered over her, "Again...how is that not fair?"
"This doesn't bother you?"
"Bother isn't really the right word...I mean, unless you mean hot and bothered, then yes, this makes me all hot and bothered, " she looked her in the eye, fighting back another smirk. "But I'm gay...what's your excuse?"
"I...don't have one."
Kelly's smile softened as she wrapped her arms around her, carefully flipping them over, "So that means, this is totally fair game, then."
Kate bit her lip softly.
"Are you ok?"
"Yea," she nodded as Kelly stroked her cheek gently.
"You second guess yourself too much, did you know that?"
"That was actually my New Year's resolution this year--to not second guess myself."
"I know it's a bit late, but I'll help you if you want."
"Yea?"
Kelly nodded, "If ever you feel like you're second guessing something, just come to me, and I'll talk you out of it."
Kate smiled, "Thanks."
Kelly shrugged, "So...we've gotta stop meeting up like this..."
Kate giggled.
Kelly leaned down, kissing her forehead.
"You've gotta make that phone call," Kate realized, her hand smoothing down one of Kelly's arms.
Kelly nodded.
"Ok," Kate replied, sitting up as Kelly rolled off of her before sitting beside her. "No talking?"
"No talking," Kelly smiled as they scooted further up the bed to lean back against the headboard.
"And if I make it through the whole interview without talking, what do I get?"
"An ice cream cone."
"Deal," Kate nodded, bouncing beside her excitedly.
Kelly laughed softly as she dialed the station's number Jason had written down for her earlier.
