Life Goes On(Pt28)
Alex bounded up the steps the next morning after breakfast. A new book in his hands and game gear stuffed in his pocket. When he couldn't find Eveyln in the huge house he settled on fixing himself cereal. He happily bounced through the door to Joe's room, cheerfully greeting a sleeping Joe. It took mere seconds for him to realize that Sav was lying on the bed with Joe.
“Uncle Sav.” He squealed and ran to the bed just in time to fly into Sav's arms to catch him. “Your home.” Questions poured out of his mouth.
“I’ve missed you too Alex.” Sav held him tight. “Shhh you’re going to wake up grandpa.”
Alex glanced around Sav to where Joe lay on the bed. “He’s…his eyes are closed does…does that mean….”
”He’s sleeping.”
“I knew if you came home, grandpa would be ok. Where have you been?”
“Never mind about that. Look how much you’ve grown.”
“I’m 9.”
”Almost 10.” Sav countered smiling, tweaking his nose. “And so big.”
Alex climbed on the bed and kissed Joe. “Morning grandpa,” he glanced back at Sav. “Is he really going to be alright?”
”Yes. In no time grandpa will be playing football with you again.”
Alex stretched across the bed and grabbed the book. “I read to him every morning. I have a new book to read today.”
“Why don’t you go have breakfast first and then come back? You can read to both of us. How does that sound?”
“I already had breakfast.”
Sav smiled, "Alright, then go find Evelyn." "I already looked for her, then fixed my own breakfast."
Sav reached over and tickled the boy, "You didn't look hard enough. She is outside in the gradens. I can't go out there, so can you go get her for me please."
"Ok." Alex readily agreed and ran from the room.
Sav lay back down close to Joe and stared at his sleep form. His fingers felt each rib protruding from his skin, then the drop to his stomach. ‘I have to get you to eat.’ Sav bit into his wrist and held it against Joe lips, he had to pry his mouth open so that the blood would drip in. Sav rubbed his throat to make him swallow. He felt the weak tugs on his wrist a few minutes later, then Joe’s fangs pierced his skin. Sav reached for a bottle of uncut blood and finished it and drank another. Joe’s teeth slipped from his arm, Sav licked the blood away then wiped Joe’s mouth. By the time he was finished, Alex came back into the room. Sav told him to sit on the other side of the bed so he could read to them.
Evelyn quietly came into the room after spending the morning in the gardens. Alex came running out to inform her of Sav's arrival, to which she told him, she already knew about. Alex pulled her back into the house, telling her that Sav wanted her.
“He’s sleeping.” Evelyn said with surprise.
Sav turned over and looked at her. “Yes and I managed to get him to feed as well.”
“Thank goodness.” Her relief was short lived however and she was overcome by anger that she had held inside since last night “Where the hell have you been Sav? It’s your fault that Joe is like this, because you wouldn’t come home. This isn’t the first time this has happened. Joe would fall into a de….”
”Save it for later Evelyn.” Sav cut her off. “Alex I'm sure this in your time to be with grandpa, but could you come back later today so that Evelyn and I can talk?”
“Ok.” he huffed and once again kissed Joe. “Are you going to fix lunch for me?”
“Yes I will when its time for lunch.” Evelyn replied and watched him leave the room.
"Alright, you can answer my questions now."
Sav regarded her a moment before looking back down at Joe, "You can leave now and close the door on your way out."
"You aren't going to answer those questions?"
Looking back up at her with a hard stare he replied, "No."
Not understanding the tone or his body language, Evelyn didn't say another word and left the room, closing the door behind her.
Once they were gone Sav repeated feeding Joe, then curled up next to him. He would not let Evelyn’s words of fault get to him and he focused his thoughts back to Joe. Letting his mind meld back to him. Joe stirred a bit and grew still. Sav smoothed his hair, giving what comfort he could while Joe slept. Weather it was through their minds or the gentle touches on his face and neck.
Sav lay there for hours with him until Alex came back. He apologized for not coming sooner but Evelyn wouldn’t let him, spouting that they needed their rest. Alex picked up his book and started reading were he left off that morning. Evelyn came in and joined them for while, watching Sav interact with Joe. His touch was the same as she remembered, soft, gentle and loving. She saw Joe respond once to his attention and the prick of tears burned her eyes.
But all to soon she had to leave and put Alex to bed. Alex and Evelyn followed the same ritual that they had done from the beginning. Kissing and telling Joe goodnight. Sav was able to get him to feed again before he rose and walked around the room to chase away sleep. He stopped at the window, leaning against the frame he shoved his hand in his pocket and stared out at the moonless night.
“So the long lost lover returns.”
The deep voice startled Sav, he spun his head and saw Nick leaning over Joe caressing his cheek.
“Get away from him Nick.”
Nick remained where he was, “You’ve managed to bring back from the edge of death.”
Sav flew across the room and grabbed the collar on the back of his shirt. “I said, get away from him.” he tossed him across the room.
Nick regained his balance and smirked at him. “Little late to be possessive of him isn’t it?”
“You’re not going to goad me into a fight.”
“I’m not doing anything.”
“You continue to live and screw up my life.”
”Come now, you don’t believe that. You did that all on your own.”
“Did I?” Sav shot back. “Just like this so called relationship you have with Amber. How big of a fool do you take me for Nick.”
“You’ve always been a fool Richard, so that’s nothing new.”
Sav rushed him, pinning Nick to the wall, inches from his face. “I may be a fool in your eyes Nick, but you’re a bigger one. This ‘fool’ knew what you were up to.”
”This I’d like to hear.”
“You knew how I felt about Amber long before. And in your quest to make sure that I never find total happiness, you stepped in and took her for yourself. Then knew that it would come out and cause me problems with Joe. You said so a long time ago that you would never let me be happy and that just proves it.”
“Instead of staying here and facing the problems you ran, just like you always do. See what it did this time.” Nick indicated toward Joe.
“You’re not going to blame this on me Nick.”
”Who better to blame, you’re the one that left, not me. Whenever it gets to rough, you run like the fool you are.”
“Fuck you Nick.” Sav hissed and shoved him harder into the wall.
“The truth hurts doesn’t it.”
”No the truth of the mat….”
”Rick.” Joe’s weak voice snapped Sav’s head around.
Sav moved quickly, he shoved Nick out the door, slamming him to the wall on the opposite side. “My main concern right now is Joe. Not you or Amber or anybody. Now get out and stay out.” Sav pushed him down the hall. “And that includes everybody.” He went back in the room and slammed the door shut and locked it. Sav knew that it wouldn’t keep Nick from busting it down, but he would deal with that later.
Sav went over and lay on the bed beside him. “I’m here Joe.” Caressing his cheek with the back of his fingers. Joe slowly opened his eyes and they focused on him. Tears pooled below the green and spilled over.
Sav gathered him in his arms. “No…no…no don’t cry. You need your strength to get better. I’m here now, it’s alright.”
”Why…where….you…?”
“Shh…don’t talk.” Sav tried not to crush him to his chest. He felt how painfully thin Joe still is. “Here you need to feed again.” Sav tilted his head exposing his neck. Joe nuzzled around, his fangs scraped above the vein, then went in. Sav let him take as much as he wanted. Knowing that he would, Sav drank many bottles of uncut blood through out the day. Gathering more strength for when Joe was hungry. Sav closed his eyes and gave his all to him. Even in his weakened state, his frail body against him, he could still stir his blood. Joe withdrew his fangs, his head remained on Sav’s shoulder.
“I…missed…you.” Joe said in a muffled tone.
Sav laid him down again and pulled away. Joe was looking up at him.
“I missed you.” Sav replied then kissed him. “Rest now. I’ll be right here.”
Sav settled beside him again and pulled him close. Joe took a deep breath and let it out slowly and went back to sleep. Sav lay awake hours later when someone knocked on the door. He heard Amber’s voice filter through. He glanced at Joe to make sure the noise didn’t wake him. Getting out of bed, Sav went over and opened the door, his foot held it in place from going to far.
“What do you want?”
Amber was taken back by the harsh tone in his voice. “I want to see Daddy. Make sure he’s alright.”
“He’s going to be fine. Now go away.” Sav slammed and locked the door.
The handle jiggled. “Sav, you can’t keep me from seeing him. Open the door right now.” Amber stared up at the ceiling. “Open this door!” She yelled with more force.
The door opened and her eyes met Sav’s angry one’s. “Joe is sleeping. I’m feeding him.” He leaned forward a bit. “Now go away.” It slammed shut again…locked.
“Damn you Sav.” Amber yelled.
Sav rejoined Joe, he was still sleeping and wasn’t disturbed by the noise. Instead of lying back down he sat in the chair by the window. Some time later he watched the car come down the long drive and pull up in front of the house. Sav parted the curtains to see who it was. Phil and Rick stepped out of the limo and glanced toward the window. Sav let the curtain fall and leaned back in the chair.
**
Two days later, Phil came downstairs and joined everyone in the living room. Taking a seat next to Amber. “He still won’t let me in.”
“He won’t let anyone in. Not even Alex now.”
“Why don’t we just bust the door down?” Rick asked looking at the group.
“No, that’s a bad idea.” Nick calmly informed them.
“Why?” Amber shot back.
“Sav is protecting what belongs to him. And if you go up there and bust the door down, then he’ll take it as a threat.”
“He already did.” Phil dragged his hand over his face. “He said the next person that came up there seeking entry. He would take Joe and disappear.”
”He can’t do that. Can he?” Amber looked at Nick with worry.
”Yes he can. In the middle of the night when we are asleep.” Rick said.
Nick went to pour a drink for himself. “I can understand were Sav is coming from. For I have done the same as he is doing now. Protecting that, which is mine.”
“How can you…” Amber started
“That's right.” Phil blurted. “I remember now. Marcus and…and…”
”Dominic.” Rick finished.
“That’s him.”
“Your memory precedes you Mr. Collen, Mr. Allen.” Nick tilted his head slightly in recognition of them.
“I’m lost. What are you talking about?” Amber said looking from one to the other.
“You were just a baby then Amber, no more than three. You were there, seen some horrible things. Don’t try and search your memory for them, because I took them away.” Nick paused. “Marcus went against my warnings and took your father and Sav. For his own enjoyment. There for, I took it as a threat and killed Dominic, Sav had already taken care of Marcus.”
”But we're not a threat to Joe.” Rick said.
“You know that and I know that. But Sav doesn’t. Right now he is blind to everything and everyone around him. His main focus is Joe and he will protect him while he’s weak and can’t do it himself.” Nick looked at all of them. “Let me warn all of you now. Stay away from the door, don’t try to get in again. Sav’s mind in a state of protection…Joe and himself. He may forget who you are and kill you next time.”
“How do you know this?” Phil asked.
“Our bond Mr. Collen, its weak, but still there. What I’m feeling from him now is very strong…and a little frightening even for me. So until they emerge from that room…together…we will leave them alone.”
