When Night Falls(Pt29)language
Joe was standing on the back patio by the pool, staring off in the darkness. The sparkling bluish water in the pool reflecting off the untouched glass of blood wine in his hand. Rustling of leaves and snapping twig brought Joe’s gaze to the nearby trees. The soft yellow undertone came into sharp focus as the night animal that shared his world of darkness, looked for its next meal. Watching the animal a few minutes, Joe turned his gaze back to the landscape before him.
‘Two days he would bring Sav home, that’s what he told me…it’s been so many weeks, I don’t even keep count anymore. My hopes were riding high when those two days came to pass, only to be crushed as the full moon began to dim the stars the third night. I let myself believe that he would keep his word. Why did I believe him after everything he has put us through? Do you still have morals left Armand? Obviously not. Is this how it’s going to be until we are all dead…the waiting to see who’s next?’
‘Never for one moment, think that Richard has left your world.’
Joe spun around, looking for the source of her voice, knowing that he wouldn’t see her. “Rebecca.” He called out in the cool soft breeze that danced around him, sensed her strong presents within. Joe felt it tug at his inside, pulling him toward the rose garden. The glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the stones beneath his feet. Making his way across the lawn, he stopped in the center of the fragrant smell of the roses.
“Rebecca.” Joe called out again.
‘Richard is calling out to you, it’s imperative that you find your way to him quickly."
“But I…I can’t...haven’t felt him in…”
‘You must try harder Joseph…’
“I have tried.”
‘…he grows weaker every passing minute.’
“How?” Joe pleading to the empty space around him.
‘Think of him, only him, the love you have for each other, knows no boundaries. That love will help guide you.’
“Show me the way.” His voice choked with emotion, as he looked around the landscape for her.
‘I cannot.’ Rebecca desperately wanted to reach out and touch him. ‘He’s in a dark, dreary place, alone, waiting for you. You must go to him Joe, before he chooses the wrong path.’
“Why? What path Rebecca, I don...”
‘We’ve broken the rules by coming to you.’
“What rules? I don’t understand.”
‘Steve is with him, helping him. You have to find him Joe, but you must hurry before it’s too late.’
“To late for what?”
‘Find him…now…hurry..’
“O..OK…” Joe was dumbfounded by her close presents, confused about what she was telling him. He could clearly hear the urgency in her voice, felt it in the air around him.
‘You must hurry.’
Joe felt her slipping away. “Rebecca wait! W..why did you wait so long…”
‘Hurry.’ Her fading voice called back.
Joe let out the breath he didn’t realize he was holding. Taking a much deeper one to help him relax and closed his eyes, gathering his thoughts. ‘I have to concentrate on Rick…nothing else…concentrate…forget about Rebecca…everything around me…only Rick…’ Sounds and smells faded in the background. Joe slowly turned in a circle, trying to pinpoint anything remotely connected to him, kept repeating his name in his mind.
Andre skidding to a halt beside him several minutes later, puzzled at his behavior and mumbling to himself now, where moments ago he was yelling out his deceased wife’s name.
“Joe.” He reached out and grabbed his shoulder.
“AAHHH!!” Joe nearly leapt off the ground from his touch. “Why did you do that Andre? I had him…I was so close…fuck!” Joe roughly shoved him back. “Get away!”
Andre held his hands up to stop Joe’s advance. “I though you were in trouble, heard you yelling. Who did you have Joe?”
“Rick, he was…” Joe’s voice faded as he turned a little and pointed to the northwest.
Andre glanced in the direction he pointed, then at the house. “Rick is in the house.”
“Not that one you idiot…the other Rick…Sav!”
“But I thought…”
“Go away! I have to find him again!”
“Alright.” He backed away, then caught movement off to the side.
Nick and Phil were heading toward them, Andre held up his hand to stop them. He glanced at Joe to see him shake off the anger and turned his back to them. Slowly making his way to where Nick and Phil were standing to wait to see if Joe could make that slim connection again.
Joe faced the way he was, when he felt that small vibration from Sav, he turned slightly one way then the other. …it wasn’t there. As the seconds ticked by that they didn’t have, Joe began to get frustrated. Nick felt that in their bond and gently eased further into Joe’s mind. Phil took a step forward, Nick immediately stopped him.
“No…he’s found him again. Get a car.”
Phil glanced at Joe, then back to Nick.
“Richard is to far away and weak to fly.” Nick never took his eyes from Joe. “And he can’t be carried back from that distance.”
“I..I..I can feel him now, he’s tha…I’ll get the car.” Phil dashed to the house, grabbed a set of car keys and ran to the garage, yelling out what was going as he went.
Joe spun around, his eyes glazed over with a slight yellow hue. Moving out of the rose garden, his strides grew quick as he headed toward the front of the house. By the time he got there, Phil brought the car to a skidding halt in the driveway. Nick landed softly beside the car when Joe yanked opened the drivers side door, nearly sitting on Phil before he could scoot to the passenger side. He was about to get out when Nick stopped him again.
“You go with him. I’ll stay here with the others. Watch your back, we don’t know where Armand is or his men.”
Phil nodded his reply. Joe stomped on the gas pedal and the car shot out of the driveway, tires squealing on the pavement.
Standing a few feet behind Nick, Rebecca, Vivian, Thomas, Brenda and Tracy linked their arms around each other.
‘I though you told me we couldn’t interfere with what happens in the mortal world.’ Thomas looked to his mother.
Rebecca exchanged a glance with Brenda and Vivian. ‘It’s forbidden for us to, but this is one time we all agreed that it should be.’
‘Why didn’t you stop my death Mother?’ Thomas tore is eyes from the rapidly fading red tail lights of the car. ‘I miss my wife and children; the grandchildren I’ll never get to hold or my father. What about Tracy? She does too.’
‘Oh Tommy...’ Rebecca reached up and softly caressed his cheek. ‘...we wanted too so very much.’
‘If we had done that, Armand would still come after all of you.’ Vivian started. ‘Whether it be now or in the future. He had to make the first move before we could do anything.’
‘Why didn’t you kill him before this all started?’
‘We can do a lot of things, but killing someone…’ Brenda wrapped her arm around Thomas waist. ‘...human or immortal, we can’t do.’
‘It’s still not fair.’ Thomas grumbled watching Nick go inside. ‘Dad will get to live a very long time, while I’m…here.’
‘That remains to be seen.’ Vivian said.
‘What does that mean?’ Tracy spoke up.
‘We altered the future. We’re not sure what is going to happen now.’ Vivian told them.
Brenda sighed heavily. “We may not even be able to see this through.”
“Why?” Again Tracy inquired.
“We broke so many rules. We are in so much trouble.”
“But rules are meant to be broken.” Tracy informed them.
Rebecca smiled warmly at her. “That young adventurous spirit is what drew Lily to you, she trusted you to keep your promise about her family secret.”
“A secret that cost me dearly.” Tracy sadly replied.
Rebecca pulled her close, lightly kissing the top of her head, then reached for Thomas. “It cost us all.”
