Taylor normally liked to sit by the pool on nights when she had trouble falling asleep. She might prefer lounging on the roof on a bright, sunny, cloudless day, but the pool was her go-to stargazing spot when it got dark. Tori’s room overlooked that pool, so when she saw Taylor through the window, she would go and keep her company. Taylor saw the beautiful California native approaching her out of the corner of her eye.
“You remember we have our guild tomorrow?”
“Of course,” Tori said as she sat down beside Taylor. “I’m excited.”
Taylor smirked, “Lucky you never seem to get anxiety after sex.”
“Why do you always assume I just had sex every time I see you here?”
“I don’t need to assume. I have a 100% accurate way of knowing.”
“Do you?”
Taylor nodded, “You wanna know what it is?”
Tori shrugged, “Sure.”
“It’s a day ending in ‘y’.”
Tori couldn’t quite hold in a laugh. Taylor patted her on the back.
“Thought so.”
“Hold on,” Tori straightened up and wondered aloud, “you get post-coital tristesse?”
“Ooh, someone borrowed Jenna’s psychology books. Anyway, no, I don’t get that. But I’ve heard of a few people who did.”
“Oh, speaking of Jenna, I don’t know how I never thought to ask this. Is Jenna still good in bed?”
Jenna had been retired from porn for several years, using some of that time to take psychology classes. Taylor looked at Tori with an expression of surprise, like Tori asked if Gal Gadot was Israeli.
“Are you kidding? Captain wishes he could be as good as her.”
“Better than Captain?!”
“Let me put it this way. Remember that one time I went down on you and you called his name? Yeah, if Jenna did that, you wouldn’t even remember his name.”
Tori chuckled, “Funny you should say it like that.”
“What do you mean?”
“That happened with me and Captain today. He asked me to name everyone in my guild. I gave your name and Hayley’s name, but then he started going really fast and I damn near forgot Dorothy’s name.”
“What about Jenna’s name?”
Tori slapped her forehead, “Fuck, that’s what I meant. Jenna’s name.”
“Damn, I knew he was good, but I didn’t think he was ‘Jenna’ good.”
“He is,” Tori affirmed.
Taylor didn’t need to bring up the fact that Tori was legitimately blushing. Tori had made it clear to her before that she had affection bordering on love for Captain. Taylor wrapped a friendly arm around Tori.
“Does this mean you’re gonna stop singing Dear No One?”
Dear No One is a song by Tori, a love song to a future soulmate that the singer has yet to meet.
“You think I would retire a fan favorite that easily? It's not like Misery Business where there's one kind of problematic lyric.”
“At the very least, you could change that ‘it’ll be worth the wait’ line now that Captain kind of made it invalid.”
“For the last time, Taylor, it’s not about saving myself for marriage.”
“Well, I’m gonna keep pretending it is, like how I pretend that Sky Full of Song is actually about alcohol poisoning.”
Taylor liked writing songs that were open to interpretation, hence some of her lyrics having a Cobain-like quality to them. Taylor would also approach other artists’ songs with that same perspective. She knows artists sometimes write songs that are meant to be about something specific, but everything short of that was fair game as far as she was concerned.
Tori pondered aloud, “Is it?”
“Florence said it could be.”
Taylor and Tori kept hanging out there for a little while longer. After struggling to keep their eyelids open, the two women finally headed back to their rooms.
