Anyone perfect must be lying; anything easy has its cost
Anyone plain can be lovely, anyone loved can be lost
What if I lost my direction? What if I lost sense of time?
What if I nursed this infection? Maybe the worst is behind
It feels just like I'm falling for the first time
Champagne and Kisses
It was snowing heavily now. A perfect Christmas Eve. We stepped out of the cab in front of the Hilton. I smiled dazedly at the surreal world which enveloped me. I was so engrossed in my reverie that I forgot about trying to act sophisticated to impress my celebrity escort, and nearly broke my face when I tripped on the curb. He laughed. I scooped up some snow flung it halfheartedly towards him.
“It’s not nice to laugh at the misfortunes of others.” I chided.
“Well then,” He dodged my snowball easily. “Maybe you should refrain from having misfortunes in front of those who might laugh at you.” I watched him. He lounged casually back against a marble pillar, flashing that damned attractive smile. I could feel myself start to blush, so I looked up. The snow floated down gently, glistening in the streetlights.
“It’s perfect, isn’t it, like living in a giant snow globe.”
“A cold snow globe.”
I laughed. “A damned cold snow globe.”
He glanced towards the revolving glass doors to the Hilton’s lobby.
“Shall we?”
We were in the elevator. Rising slowly higher and higher. I looked at the woman to my left. Her cheeks were flushed, and her eyes glittered like vibrant green gems. So pure, radiating a peaceful sort of innocence. Involuntarily I glanced towards her lips. God how I wanted to kiss them, taste them, here them moan my name. I swallowed hard. A soft chime reverberated somewhere deep within my passion-drugged brain. She smiled.
“Well, I guess this is my stop…”
I looked up; the little numerals above indicated that we were on the fourth floor. I sighed.
She blushed, meeting my gaze. There was something in their sea green depths that caught my attention, a kind of questioning look, as though she was searching for some validation that I might offer. It was then I realized that she was stalling, searching for any excuse to avoid getting off the elevator and possibly walking out of my life forever. I was touched. She must have picked up on this, because her eyes suddenly lit up.
“Pictures!” She blurted.
I stared.
“The ones of Chris…wouou lou like to see them?” Her eyes were huge and pleading; she looked as though she might keel over if I didn’t accept.
I had to fight to suppress my laughter. I grinned, nodding.
There was a pause.
“Well then,” I said lightly “We’d better get off.”
She looked up, confused.
I jerked my head towards the open elevator door.
“Oh!” Her blush deepened and she looked away. “Um, right…off.”
I walked purposefully down the hall, tuning the room key over in shaky hands. Johnny Depp was following me into my hotel room.
To look at pictures, I reminded myself.
Right, Chris Westra with a lampshade on his head. We’d have a laugh, and then he’d go.
That was the plan. That’s what would happen.
I slipped the small metal implement into its slot. With a soft “click” I felt the bolt slide into place. The door opened easily. I was already a few steps inside when I realized that Johnny had stopped following me. He stood in the doorway looking uneasy.
“Well, come on in then.”
He stayed put.
“I can’t”
I looked at him incredulously. “Here, I’ll guide you through it. First, transfer the weight from you’re left foot to you’re right, then raise that foot and step-“
“No. It would be….I couldn’t…it would be unfortunate if anything were to…happen.”
His voice trailed of and I was surprised to see him blush faintly.
“I’m not a leper!” I snapped, a little more harshly then I’d intended to.
He looked up, shocked. “No…that’s not what I….I’ve been warned to keep my distance.”
My jaw dropped. “By who?”
“Well, tactfully by Maggie, less tactfully by one of your uncles, and profoundly by Willy. I believe his actual words were: ‘Unless ye plan on marryin’ her, kip yer hands off th’ kid or I’ll break yer back.’”
“Of all the…Christ! You’d think they’d have realized by now that I’m not a child!”
Johnny cocked his head to one side. “I don’t know… you do have a dewy, untouched look about you.”
I grinned in spite of myself. “Besides, all we’re doing is looking at pictures, right?” I raised an eyebrow, doing my best to look seductive.
He let out a snort of laughter, shutting the door as he entered the room.
“Right.”
I kicked off my shoes, somewhat unceremoniously, Johnny followed my lead. He sat down on the edge of the king-sized bed, as I rummaged in my suitcase for my album.
“They don’t treat you half badly, do they?”
“Well, they’re family; I suppose it’s what they do best.”
He laughed. “I meant the hotel.”
I mentally kicked myself. Smooth. Very smooth Finn.weenween this and the elevator escapade, I must have seemed like a complete moron. An excellent seduction tactic…first, lure your prey into thinking that you’re as dumb as a post…and then pounce. Fortunately, at that exact moment I found my scrapbook.
I let Johnny look through it as I searched fruitlessly for something to offer him. A drink maybe? Sure, but what…ah-huh! The mini-bar!
“Do you want anything?”
“Sure.” He answered, without looking up.
“I meant, from the Mini-bar.”
“So did I.”
“What would you like?”
“Surprise me.”
I grabbed a couple random bottles and sat down on the bed. I handed him the slightly larger one and set about trying to peel back the foil around the rim of mine. This proved to be a more challenging endeavor then it had initially appeared. When I’d finally finished, Johnny raised his drink.
“To…”
“To snow” I supplied.
“To snow”
I grinned at Finn, and finished my drink in one gulp. It was Gin. I wasn’t a huge fan of Gin. She tried to follow my lead, swinging back her head to down it all just as I had done. The strong stuff had barely touched her lips when she began to cough.
“Don’t drink much, do you?”
She giggled, biting her lip. “No, no not really…I haven’t had anything stronger than wine since someone spiked my punch in High School.”
“Really?”
She nodded.
“Well, maybe we’d best just stick to wine.”
She laughed, setting her bottle down on the nightstand. “What wine? I guess we could call room service…”
I picked up the phone and dialed the front desk, as it rang, it occurred to me that I was far from a wine connoisseur, and therefore would have no idea what to order. In the end I look a leaf out of Johnny’s book and told room service to “Surprise me.” Before hanging up. Minuets later there was a knock on my door. The man had bought chocolates, champagne and two long, slender glasses. After he’d left, I poured a glass for Johnny, and one for myself. I curled up beside him on the bed, and sipped champagne as he continued to leaf through my scrapbook. I pretended to be interested in the page in front of me, but my attention kept straying to the man on my left. We were barley touching, his arm brushing lightly against my shoulder, but the contact was enough to make my heart race and cause my hands to tremble. I downed the last of my glass, hoping the alcohol might calm this. I set my empty glass on the nightstand with a sigh. This caught Johnny’s attention. He looked at me sharply, those intense brown eyes boring into mine. I was sure he could tell what I was thinking. A steady heat rose to my cheeks, but I couldn’t bring myself to look away. He leaned foreword, closing the space between us in one movement. He reached across my body and…grabbed the empty champagne glass.
“More?” Johnny asked lightly, getting to his feet.
I exhaled, realizing that I’d been holding my breath. Did this man know what he was doing to me? The twinkle in his eye, and the way his lips were quirked into a seductive half-smile made me suspect that he did.
“I probably shouldn’t” I said grinning.
“Don’t worry so much about ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’…”
He handed me a fresh glass. “Just live in the moment.”
Two hours, a bottle of champagne, and many chocolate liquors later, Finn and I were sprawled across the giant King sized bed. I was contemplating the universe, life, love, and all that was in between. I looked across at Finn who appeared to be contemplating the wrapper of the last chocolate liquor.
“Can you actually get drunk on these? Or would the amount of chocolate you’d have to consume make you sick before you got to that point?”
I propped myself up on one elbow. “I don’t know…It would be an interesting experiment.” She laughed, rolling to one side and sanding.
“I’m going to grab a glass of water.”
I watched her go. God she was gorgeous. The slightly rumpled satiny green dress she wore clung to her body in all the right places…and what a body it was…small, curvy, and delicate. The kind of body one worried he might crush were he to hold it too tightly. Her skin was smooth and creamy, eyes glittering an almost aqua color in the dim light. I wanted to touch that skin, I realized. Run my fingers through that soft apricot colored hair, and taste those lips. I swallowed hard. No, I thought. Bad. She’s young and pure, so naive and innocent…probably still a virgin. You have no right to take that away.
I watched him over the rim of my glass. He was looking at me, waging a subconscious battle in his mind. Something about the look of his eyes excited me, made my pulse quicken, my cheeks flush, and my breathing almost stop. I took a large gulp of water, before setting it back down atop the Mini-bar. As I came closer to the bed, I tripped on the leg of the nightstand.
He had to catch me. It was either that or let me fall. But once he’d caught me, he didn’t have to kiss me. Heat raced from his lips through my body. His moustache tickled, it was soft, like a kitten’s tale and almost as active, adding a new dimension to a technique that already had quite a lot to recommend of it. He wrapped his arms tightly around my waste, deepening the kiss. ‘It’s a good thing he’s holding me up’ I though somewhat giddily ‘otherwise I’d fall…’
