The following year, 1582
The baroness had already given girth to her second child, another son. She named him Daniel. He was and adorable child of four months. Hugh was not happy with this change. He was seven years old now, and had enjoyed being an only child. Daniel didn’t look a thing like Hugh, though he too, was a strangely beautiful child. His eyes were a bright green and his hair, though he had little, was a soft bloolorolor. He was his mother’s precious jewel. Surely, she loved Hugh, but Daniel was extra special. He was like her little doll, though he would someday grow into a handsome young man, and find love. She held him dear now, as he was only a tiny infant. He was a wonderfully behaved child, not much of a crier.

That same week
June Hayes stared blankly at her husband. Had he not heard her? She tried again.
“Robert, I am with child,” she said, looking at him expectantly.
“I heard you my love,” he stammered.
“Then what is the matter?”
“Nothing, darling. I’m just trying to let it sink in,” he said, blinking. Suddenly it hit him; he was going to be a father. He rushed at his wife and enveloped her in a tight embrace. “This is wonderful!” He shouted dancing in circles with his astonished wife. She had never seen him behave in this manner. She rather enjoyed it.
“Of course it Now Now we just have to wait,” she said, looking slightly crestfallen.
“You may no longer work in the garden or at the stand,” he said, concern edging in his voice.
“But Darling, how will we earn our money?”
“I’ll find other work. I do not want you to endanger yourself or our child,” he said flatly.
“Robert, be reasonable. At least allow me to continue to work the stand. There’s no harm in it,” she argued, pouting.
“Oh all right. But only the stand. Nothing else. And I’m making you a chair to sit on. I won’t have you running about,” he stated. She knew there was no arguing this one.
“All right, dear,” she said, thankful he allowed her what he did. “We’ve got to tell the baroness,” she said, realizing that there was a binding agreement.
“First thing tomorrow,” he said, yawning. She followed him to their tiny bedroom.

The next morning
The baroness awoke to screams. They were unlike any sound she had heard in a while. She raced to the crib where her infant son slept. He looked like Daniel, but he sure didn’t sound like him. She lifted the tiny child from his crib and rocked him, in an effort to console him. After many long moments, the child’s tears had subsided. At this same moment, there was a knock on the door. It was a soft knock, probably a child. She went to answer the door and found herself face to face with a face she had hoped never to see at her door. Thasanasant man accompanied by a young woman. Probably his wife.
“May I help you,” she said sharply.
“Well, my lady we’ve come to bring you good news. My wife June, here is with child. So we wanted to remind you of your debt to me for saving your life,” the peasant man said. Christine slammed the door in their faces. “I gather that you aren’t happy to see us,” came the peasant man. Christine composed herself. How could she have been soe? e? After all, she did owe her life to this man. She reopened the door.
“Forgive me, I wasn’t expecting company,” Christine said awkwardly, with a forced smile.
“It’s quite alright my lady,” Robert said, as she ushered them into her home. The baroness led them into the parlor. Hugh ran in and saw that there was company.
“Are you new servants?” Hugh asked with naïveté only a seven year old could possess.
“Oh, no, dear, we’re here to talk to your mother,” June replied smiling at her future son in law.
“Okay,” he said and sat on the floor to play with his wooden soldiers. The baroness entered the room carrying an infant.
“Hugh, go play in your room,” she said sternly.
“No!” he shouted at her.
“Hugh,” she repeated.
“Only if you come see my new pony,” he said.
“But Hugh, I have the baby,”
“Let them hold him, they already look like servants,” Daniel began screaming. Christine looked at the couple apologetically.
“It’s all right,” June said, motioning for the screaming child.
“Okay, but he’s been very fussy today, I must warn you,” Christine said handing the baby to June. Instantaneously, the crying ceased. Christine looked incredulously at June, who half smiled half smirked back.
