Later that night, about ten, Steve, Dave, and I retreated back into our room. Since I was a new arrival, Dr. Reynolds had decided to follow the tradition of the institute and let us celebrate with a movie. It wasn’t much of a celebration though, since he had gotten to pick out the movie and had chosen ‘The Wizard Of Oz’. He even picked the black and white version instead of the color one. It was more unnerving than anything. Since the incident, I have found myself believing that Reynolds is a bastard.
During that time, I had met a few of the other boys in the institution besides Dave and Steve. Jon was the first one that I met. He was a very odd boy, one that I could not see myself carrying on a conversation with at all. Maybe it was because he was talking to himself or maybe it was because I found it a little creepy that he already knew my full name, age, and birth date and recited them to me while I shook his hand. As I looked at him, he laughed and gave me an answer. “The nurses like to gossip.”
I had then met Lenny, a rather small and meek boy who was afraid of everything. Because of him, before we started the movie, the nurse had asked whether we would like the light on or off. Everyone agreed on off. It was then that he screamed and screamed for it to come back on. He then wanted it off, saying that he was frightened of the light. This went on for a while before the nurse left the light on.
The one that was the most interesting was Aaron. The moment that we had walked into the lounge, he was surrounding Dave with attention. Steve and I watched as he tried to hug, snuggle, and even grope him. Dave told him to leave him alone and to stop numerous times but the boy simply didn’t listen. Finally he resorted to pushing the boy away from him. When that didn’t work, he looked around to see that the nurses weren’t looking then punched him in the stomach. That seemed to do the trick for Aaron walked off degradingly.
“That boy has had it bad for Dave since he got here.” Steve crowed out while laughing and trying to stay quiet at the same time. “Man, look at him over there!” I looked over toward Aaron to see him making crude gestures at Dave. “He never gives up. Stupid bastard never gives up.”
“It’s not funny.” Dave hissed at us while glaring at Steve. “I hate you.” He muttered before turning back to the black and white screen. Dorothy was currently trotting down the yellow brick road which, because of the doctor’s choice in movies, was currently grey.
“Oh Dave, you don’t mean that. You know that you love me.”
“I’ve changed my opinion. I hate you.”
I laughed at the small exchange of words. I guess I was glad that they were my roommates as much as Steve was glad I was theirs. They seemed to be the most normal ones here. Meeting people that were normal, like me, was good. Again, I must tell you that I am not crazy!
After the movie, we retreated back to the room. I moved to my new bed, finding it in between Steve’s and the boy I had yet to meet. I noticed that the view our window gave us was very nice. It over looked the front of the institute and was currently letting in the moonlight. The bed itself was semi-comfortable but nothing like the soft mattress I had at home. Looking over, I noticed that both Steve and Dave had gotten out theirs and were currently writing in them. I pulled mine out of my own bedside table drawer, making a face at the way the front held the emblem of the institute. They were small notebook yet they were thick with paper.
“You might want to write in that tonight.” Steve’s voice broke me from my investigation of the notebook. “That asshole Reynolds’s gets pissed if you don’t write something in it everyday.”
“Just what am I supposed to write about?”
“Well, anything really. I’m writing about how I thought it was crap that we had to watch the black and white version of ‘Wizard of Oz’ instead of the colored one. I know Dave is writing about how excited he is that Aaron was trying to pick up on him yet again.” I noticed the glare that held certain h foh for Steve if he didn’t shut up soon coming from Dave. He laughed but still continued. “It’s okay, Dave. We know your just being coy and leading him on.”
“Fuck off ass.” Dave told him as he shifted to a new position on his bed. “I’m pretty sure he’ll tire of me soon and move onto new and lesser people.”
“Hmmm. You think he’d like me? I mean, I am a lot taller than you. He might have a hard time looking into my eyes.” He laughed at the other glare that was sent his way. “No seriously though. Just write about anything. It doesn’t matter what.”
I looked down at the little notebook in my hand and opened it up. Luckily it was spiral, I always hated writing in hardback notebooks. It was too hard to write with the pages crammed.
I am new here today. I wrote down not know what else to write. I have met two of my roommates and I guess I could write down that they are my friends now. They are great people and normal too. It is good to see that considering that this is an institution. Their names are Steve and Dave. Dave is more reserved while Steve speaks out loud. I have not met my third roommate for I have heard that he had gotten in trouble. I can only hope that he is as nice as these two and hopefully normal. I admit also that he is lucky that he got the window bed.
The words took up about a full page. After reading it over, I hastily added , This mattress is real uncomfortable. I smiled as I shut it, cingcing that my two roommates were currently changing into their night clothes.
“You have night clothes?” Dave asked me.
Yes as you can guess, confusion reign supreme as to why he had asked that question. “I have a pair of night pants, yes.”
“Good. It’s a lot safer to wear them to bed that it is to go to bed in boxers.”
I pulled out my flannel sleeping pants after looking through the drawers of my dresser. My mother had given them to me for my birthday. They were both comfortable and thin, the perfect combination for sleep. Turning away from them, I began to dress all the while asking the question that everyone probably asked one time or another. “Why?”
When he didn’t answer my question I looked over to notice that he was already in bed, his back turned toward the opposite wall. Steve looked over at him for a moment. “Since your new here, I’m going to warn you. Don’t go out to the bathroom until morning or with another person. It’s not safe either.”
“Why?”
Looking at the door, Steve made to talk, then paused. I noticed him looking around the room, his brown eyes scanning every square inch that they could see. Finally, he stepped closer toward me while throwing a sweatshirt over his head at the same time. “The nurses.” He all but whispered. “Some of them…. well, some of them should be in here instead of us. Some of them take liberties with the patients.”
“That’s illegal.”
“I know but for some reason Reynolds overlooks it.”
“Why hasn’t anyone ever reported anything?”
Steve snorted and let out a chuckle. “Man, besides the reception office and Reynolds office himself, there are no phones.”
“What about previous patients who have made a full recovery.”
He looked at me incredulously. “How the hell am I supposed to know? I know what goes down in here. I have no idea about what goes down out there.” Noticing my expression, he sighed softly. “Just watch out, okay. There are a lot of things in this place that are kept under wraps. You don’t want to be in the middle of them.”
I nodded at him, knowing that he did not want to talk on the subject anymore. Again, I was dumbfounded by their words. They were telling me to be careful, yet, they would not inform me what of. A nurse walked into our room and smiled at us. I smiled at her, although it was forced. She then instructed us to get into bed. We followed her orders and before she left, she turned off the light. I laid in my bed for a while, looking through the bar covered window at the moon, thinking about what my new friends had told me.
‘Seriously though, watch out around here. There’s a lot of shit that goes down that is not cool. If your not careful you might find yourself in some of it.’
I frowned as I remembered the words.
‘Some of them take liberties with the patients.’
If only I could know what they meant.
‘Just watch out, okay. There are a lot of things in this place that are kept under wraps. You don’t want to be in the middle of them.’
Frustrated, I turned away from the window, laying on my back and staring at the ceiling. This was my first night here and I already hated the place. Looking over at my roommates, I noticed that Dave and Steve seemed to be already asleep. I couldn’t see Dave in the darkness but I could hear the snores and snorts coming from Steve as well as his large open mouth in the moonlight. Finally I turned over, burying deep into the white sheets that were on my bed. Better to get sleep than spending all night thinking about something I knew barely anything about.
