Chapter 2
We finally reached his apartment, which was actually an old closed down warehouse. He unlocked the door, and as I stepped inside, I noticed screens divided the place. I could tell, that the back part of the enormous room was his private quarters, and the front was obviously for business. It was filled with training equipment of all kinds. And in a corner there was a large old desk with a computer and a phone in it. The wall behind it was filled with old books, some of which obviously had not been used for years, as they where covered in dust.
“ So…” I asked, as we stood in the middle of all the training gear, “where do we start?”
“ It’s up to you.” Kevin said, smiling at me, “ Do you want to start the physical training right away, or would you like to get to know what you’re up against first?” He gestured towards the corner with the desk as he said this.
After thinking about it for a while, I gave him my answer,
“ Well, it’s my birthday and I really don’t want to do anything physically demanding on my birthday, so I say we hit the books!” I smiled at him nicely, in the hopes that he would agree with me.
“ Whatever you say birthday girl!” he said laughing, but then he turned serious again, “but tomorrow we have to start the training!”
“ Yeah yeah, whatever you say!” I said, smiling, “after all, you’re the one who know what the heck is going on.”
“ That’s right!” he said as he started moving towards the large desk.
I followed him over, and as he took a seehinehind the desk, I pulled up a chair, to sit in front of him.
“ Now” he said, “ as you probably know, these last few months the city has been plagued by a series of mysterious murders.” He looked at me to get a confirmation.
“ Yeah I know, why do you think I have this damned pepper spray on me all the time!” I said, and pulled out the pepper spray for him to see.
“ The police don’t know where to start looking for the killer, and even if they did, they wouldn’t be able to do anything.” Kevin said, “ you see, the murderer or should I say murderers are all vampires” he looked at me to see my reaction, and as I didn’t look disturbed by the information he had just given me, he continued, “ I don’t know exactly who killed who, but I know they are all from the same coven, and I know who the leader of that coven is.” He said.
“ So who is it?” I asked, genuinely intrigued.
He turned around and pulled a book from thokshokshelf behind him. He started turning the pages and suddenly stopped. He laid the book down on the table and pushed it towards me.
“ Him.” He simply said, and pointed to a picture on one of the pages.
I looked at the picture, the picture of a young man about my age.
“ Him?” I asked not quite believing that the angel-faced man in the picture was a cold-blooded killer, a vampire no less. I looked at Kevin as he said,
“ Don’t let the innocent look fool you! He is as ruthless a killer as any there has ever been.”
“ But he can’t be more that what? 22, 23 tops!” I said laughing slightly at the idea of that man, that boy, being the leader of a vampire coven.
“ Try 400.” Said Kevin seriously.
“ 400 what? Years?” I asked looking at him with an amused look on my face.
“ Yes years!” Kevin stated getting angry, “ Angel, this is no laughing matter. If you don’t take this seriously, you’ll end up dead as any other human who has ever been in contact with this group!”
The reality, seriousness of the situation hit me like a train. I started shaking. Tears welled up in my eyes as I looked at Kevin. His face softened as he saw my wet eyes and trembling lips.
“ Angel…” he started, but he was cut off.
“ I can’t do this! I can’t fight them! I don’t want to die!” I started saying more to myself than to him.
“ Angel look at me!” he said, while at the same time forcing me to look into his eyes, “ You will not die! Not if you train, prepare to fight them. You have to study them, know their habit, know their weaknesses…don’t you see? Then you’ll have the upper hand! You can fight them! You will fight them! And you will triumph!”
I looked at him, and saw that he was sincere; he meant what he had just told me. The determined look on his face made me believe that I could do this. After all, I was the slayer. I smiled through tearstained cheeks and drying my eyes I said,
“ Alright, I believe you! But if you’re wrong, I swear to God I’ll come back and haunt you for the rest of your days!”
He laughed,
“ I know you will! But I wont let you die, I promise!”
I leaned over the table and hugged him, whispering a silent “Thank you” in his ear. He stroked my hair and said,
“ Don’t worry. It’ll be alright.” As he pulled he continued, “Now, you have some work to do. I want you to read thrt ort of this book that’s about our friend here,” he pointed to the picture, “and in the meantime, I’ll make us some dinner. You are hungry aren’t you?”
“ Famished!” I said, and he smiled before he headed toward the kitchen.
I turned the pages of the book and found where the chapter started.
