Chapter Two
Something brushed the corner of Hayden’s mouth. In his sleep, he sighed. A few moments later, something velvety brushed over his cheek and then his forehead. A frown crossed his features and he swam to the surface. Groggy eyes opened to darkness. Fingers stroked through his hair, a hesitant, yet longing glide to them as if they knew they shouldn’t be doing this yet couldn’t help themselves.
Hayden shifted and his body ached at the movement, a muffled groan biting back the pain. Turning his head slightly, he looked up into Natalie’s solemn face glowing like alabaster in the moonlight.
“Hi,” she greeted, her voice quiet.
“Hi,” he returned, the sleepy smile causing her heart to flip over a few times.
“It’s late. I have to go.”
Hayden struggled to sit up in spite of Natalie’s hand attempting to hold him down. “No. Stay.” He demanded, his voice deep and drowsy.
“I can’t,” she murmured, fingers stroking down his cheek. “It’s near midnight and people will start looking for me.”
Meaning Matt, Hayden guessed. “So? Call and tell ‘someone’ you’re ok.”
“I can’t do that. Not to Matt. It wouldn’t be fair to be so c to to him. He’s not the one who’s changed his mind. I have.”
“You’re right,” Hayden nodded, a hand stroking up her arm. Leaning into her he kissed her, a slow, easy movement of his lips over hers. She was powerless to her immediate response, her body pummeled with a longing so sharp it made her head reel. All she wanted was to lie back down and discover him and how their bodies fit together all over again.
No! Her head hissed. Go! Before it gets too complicated!
His lips lifted from hers and moved to her cheek, the tender caress somehow comforting. In the moonlight Hayden’s eyes drift held hers, prolonging her rise from the bed.
“Don’t ever be sorry about this,” Hayden reminded, his eyes burning with a blue flame.
Natalie’s lips curved as she drew a finger down his nose. “I t EVt EVER be sorry about this. I told you I wouldn’t regret it.”
“I know,” he sighed, “but in the morning light things have a way of changing.”
Curving a hand around his neck she lifted her face to kiss him, her lips clinging, reluctant to let the moment go. When she finally pulled away, she squared her shoulders and forced herself out of bed.
In the dark Natalie dressed quickly and Hayden slid out of bed and pulled on his sweats.
“You should stay in bed,” Natalie chided, worry etching lines in her forehead.
“I can at least walk to the door without passing out,” Hayden commented dryly, unaware of Natalie staring at his sleepy eyes and tousled hair. He shrugged and her eyes fell to his shoulders, appreciating their width and strength. “Besides, it’s not as comfortable without you in it curled up beside me like a kitten.” The comment warmed Natalie’s cheeks, a new shyness overwhelming her.
Through the dark apartment they made their way to the door, Hayden’s intention to see her to her car. Anticipating it, she stopped at the door and laid a hand on his chest to halt his progress. She had to tilt her head back to look up at him and fixed him with a stern look.
“I refuse to let you walk me to my car,e sae said, wanting to kick herself for touching his warm skin.
“But…”
“No, Hayden,” she shook her head. “Stay. Please. Watch from the window if you want to make sure I’m safe, but let me do this my way. I have to or I’ll be afraid the rest of my life. And if you come with me it’s going to be that much harder to leave. It’s hard enough now as it is.”
A million reasons why he should argue with her filed through his mind, but he recognized the stubborn set to her jaw. “I don’t like it and it goes against my upbringing, but all right,” Hayden conceded. “Come here.”
Natalie glided into his arms resting her head below his chin. His arms held her close and they stayed in the embrace for long minutes. When she stirre loe loosened his hold, dropping his head to meet the lips seeking his. Fingers dug trails into his hair as her lips caressed his, opening to stroke his tongue, the now familiar flip of her stomach churning again.
“Thank you, Hayden,” Natalie whispered against his mouth. In the next moment she slid out the door, closing it with a decisive click.
Hayden blinked a second then padded to the living room window. A minute later she emerged from the building. At her car she looked up at his window, checked the back seat, climbed in and locked the doors. He stood there until her car disappeared from his view.
Making his way back to bed, he dropped his sweats and eased himself under the cover. Hands folded behind his head, he stared at the ceiling. He knew he hadn’t dreamt it. His body still ached in new places and it hardened wanting her all over again. A groan slipped passed his lips.
So where does this leave us now, Natalie? What do I say to you after all this? Hayden shook his head. You’ve completely blown me away and ruined me. A heavy sigh echoed around the room, the sound lost and lonely in the silence.
He lay there for a while then reached for the phone. On the first ring, she answered.
“Hello?”
“I just wanted to make sure you got home.”
“I just picked up the phone to call you when it rang. I didn’t want you to worry.”
Silence engulfed them, both having nothing to say but not eager to break the connection. Natalie lay back against the pillows, the phone cradled to her ear. It amazed her that the silence was not uncomfortable in any way.
“I’d better let you get to sleep,” Hayden finally broke the silence.
“Ok,” Natalie sighed, loathe to hang up. “Hayden?”
“Hmm?”
“No regrets,” she reminded, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Not in a million years,” the smile in his voice brought a smile to her face. “Night, Natalie. Sweet dreams.”
“Good night, Hayden,” Natalie answered, saying his name just to hear herself say it. She hung up andled led onto her side, curling into a ball. Immediately, his voice rang in her thoughts, calling her his ‘kitten.’ When she fell asleep the smile still lit her face with a soft glow.
The morning sun crawlerossross Natalie’s bedroom, its bright fingers stretching their way to Natalie’s face. The heat seeped into her skin rudely waking her. Her eyelashes fluttered against the glare and she groaned at herself for forgetting to draw the curtains. Rolling over, she dragged a pillow over her head. Muscles protested the action and she frowned in confusion. Why was she so sore?
Everything crashed back at her, all the memories fighting for prominence: Matt, the assailant, Hayden saving her, Michelle, Hayden’s apartment, his bed…
THAT flipped her onto her back, her mouth opening in disbelief. She’d…he’d…they’d… Shaking fingers found her lips. What had she done? How was she going to face Hayden? And Matt! What was she going to tell him?
Hayden’s words flowed into her mind, a cool reminder that it had been her decision. What must he think of her? Natalie squeezed her eyes shut in hopes of blocking the images but they oozed through the tiniest cracks in min mind. The tempting, slow kisses; the first touch of his fingers on her breast; the dark light in his eyes as he stared into hers; the tenderness of his entry into her body for the first time, trying to spare her any pain… It had hurt, she admitted with a grimacut iut it had been short lived. It had dissolved, faded, replaced by…
Natalie’s body softened as the memories poured over her. Her eyes flew open expecting to find Hayden’s eyes devouring hers as they moved in tandem. All she saw was ceiling. But she could almost feel him moving in and out of her, her hips itching to move with him, against him…
In a state of anxious denial and arousal, Natalie kicked back the covers and bolted for the bathroom, in hopes the hot sting of the shower would settle her haywire emotions. The spray pelted her with soothing warmth, the rising steam enveloping her in a cocoon. Still, the thoughts permeated her hideout.
Leaning against the wall she stared at the water tumbling out of the spout. Questions hurled themselves at her, no room to dodge away. Was every girl’s first time that good? Did they really feel that close to the other person even if they were just friends? Would it be this way every timeouldould it be this overwhelming with someone else? Why did she do it? Out of gratitude? Because she just wanted him and hadn’t realized it until yesterday?
I wish he were here to help me sort this out!
Natalie’s eyes widened. HERE was the shower. A whole new set of images beat at her: Could they make love in the shower and it still be that soul destroying?
Soul destroying, she mused at her choice of words. He’d said she would probably feel differently in the ing.ing. She didn’t know how she felt! She still didn’t have the strong feelings for Matt she’d had twenty-four hours ago. Maybe if she slept with him it would be the same as it had been with…
“Oh, shut up, Natalie!” She yelled, the sound bouncing around the shower. A hand swiped the shampoo bottle off the shelf and tipped the contents into her hair. Fingers clawed and scrubbed so hard that tears stung her eyes. With her body sponge she scrubbed her skin until it was raw. But the pain could not take her mind off the subject. One moment she was cursing herself, the next was was yearning for what she could never have again.
Hayden tossed and turned his beaten body all night long. Only when sheer exhaustion reared its head did he sleep for a few hours. When he awoke he took a couple more pain relievers and headed into the shower.
Going through the mechanical motions he washed with a methodical pace while his mind dwelt on Natalie.
You knew she was in a highly emotional state. Why did you do it? Hayden grimaced and sighed.
Because you wanted her. She looked at you with those big brown eyes and you went right along with her. You even took over! He cranked the water off and ran a weary hand over his face.
I refuse to regret it. It was beautiful. It was intense. It was…well, it just was. And I’d do it again…and again…
“Get a grip,” he growled at himself, snatching up the towel. “It won’t happen again.” His body immediately disagreed. “Oh, shut up!”
The tangled covers received a baleful glare as he stalked into the bedroom. One hand jerked them down to straighten them and froze. Hayden’s lips parted and he sunk onto the edge of the bed and stared down, a finger reaching out. There, in the middle, a tiny red blotch stained the sheet, evidence of Natalie’s lost innocence.
