LAST TIME:
“She already had two ready. That’s what I usually eat but I’m not that hungry today.” She explained to him.
They started eating. “So you were gonna tell me about why you sing to the stars.”
CHAPTER 3:
“When I was little I like to stay with my grandma over the summer at her farm—”
He interrupted her, “There ain’t no farms in this area Tai.”
She rolled her eyes and gave him a look that said ‘let me finish’. “We use to live in Kansas.”
“You’re not in Kansas anymore Toto.” He stated with a grin.
Tai threw some of the chips that came with their lunch at him. “You’re such a dork Marshall.”
He laughed.
“Anyway, we would go out every night and sing songs to the stars before bedtime.” She finished.
“What kinds of songs?”
She took a sip of her coke before speaking, “Oh all kinds, really.”
“Give me an example.”
She thought for a second, “We sang some Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, and whoever else was out at the time.”
“Who are they?”e="me="mso-spacerun: yes" He asked with a straight face.
Tai chocked on her drink. “You’re not seriously suggesting that you never heard of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald!”
He grinned.
“You ass! I could have so totally died on my soda!” She yelled at him but the effect was ruined from her smile. “What would you have done then?” She gasped, “You could have had to ride a bus to the studio!”
Marshall laughed, “I would have given you mouth to mouth.”
Tai rolled her eyes.
“So…what happened?” He asked.
She looked at her sandwich for a second, “Nana passed away and we had nothing keeping us in Kansas, so we moved out here and started a restaurant.” She shrugged, “It was a long time ago.” Tai paused, “I haven’t been back since…but I’d like to go back to see the farm again.”
“I only ever sang songs when I was visiting her…but now I do it so I don’t forget her.”
“What happened to the farm?”
“Nobody bought it, so it just went to ruin.”
There was a short comfortable silence.
“Do you want some ice cream?” She asked him.
“Yeah sure.” He watched her walk over to the small fridge. “What is this room?”
Tai opened the freezer and pulled out a carton of Neapolitan. “This ok?”
“Yeah.”
She put it on the counter. “This room,” Tai opened it and got two bowls and spoons, “was going to be the break room.” She tried to dish it out but it wasn’t soft enough, “But it’s too small, so I use it for things like this.” She gestured to him.
“So are you saying that you bring stars here often?” Marshall smiled at her.
“Hey! I’ve only ever done it once before!” She grinned at him and left the carton open on the counter to soften.
His brow furrowed. “Really? Who?”
She went to the kitchen door. “I don’t think you really want to know.”
“Why? Who was it? A pop star?” He grinned back.
“Five, actually.”
“You’re serious?” He was a little stunned. He had thought she was kidding.
“Nope. Brownie?” He nodded and she opened the door to yell for two warm ones.
Tai walked over to the far wall and took down a picture. “Here.”
“How the fuck did you manage that.” It was NSYNC standing with her and a little girl in the room they were in now.
She took the picture back and looked at it. “I won two tickets to their show and I took my little sister. We went to the meet and greet. They came and spent the afternoon with me and her in this room.” She shrugged and put the photo back on the wall.
The kitchen door opened and Bobby came in with their two warm brownies with vanilla ice cream on top.
Tai rolled her eyes, “We have ice cream Bobby.”
Bobby placed the plates in front of them, “Oh I know but that freezer is fucked up. It makes the ice cream hard.” She put the carton back in the freezer.
“Thanks Bobby.” Tai called as she left.
“How do they get this food out here so fast?”
“Oh it’s because they have a VIP guest.” She took a bite. “They want to impress her.”
“Don’t you mean ‘he’?”style="msocerucerun: yes"> Marshall asked.
“No. I’m not a male.” She paused. “Oh! Did you think I was talking about you?!” Tai exclaimed.
He laughs. “I like you Tai.
“Well I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t.”
They finished their ice cream and said goodbye to her parents.
“Well I enjoyed that.” He commented as they got in her car.
“Yeah, we should do it again sometime.” She smiled at him and he grinned back. Tai started the car. “You’ll have to direct me, I don’t know where the studio is.”
He told her where to go and she pulled out. The car ride was eventless. They just talked about anything in the ten minutes that it took to get there.
She pulled in and pd. They got out of the car and walked into the building. Marshall led her over to the desk and got her an all access pass. “This is so you can gowherwhere with me.” She nodded and put it around her neck.
They got in the elevator and pushed theton ton for the fifth floor.
“So what is it you have to do here?” She asked when they stopped to pick up a man on the second floor. He pushed the button for floor eight.
“There is someone who’s gonna lay down some tracks.” He shrugged, “I like to be here for these things.” He smiled at her.
They walked out of the elevator when it reached their floor and went down the hall to the third door on the right. Inside was Proof, 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, and a kinda chunky biracial girl who was wearing blue jeans and a tight black shirt with Marshall’s face on it. Tai rolled her eyes.
“Marsh! You’re on time.” Proof said.
“Haha.” He replied dryly as he slapped hands with the men. “Curtis, what you doin here man?” He asked.
“Just thought I’d come down and see what was up.” He glanced at the dirt-covered girl that came in with him. “Who’s this?”
Tai looked at Marshall, “You really have no manners.an san She was referring to when he was on the phone with Proof at the restaurant.
The guys looked at her in surprise waiting for Marshal to lay into her. They were even more surprised when he just laughed put his left arm around her shoulders.
“Guys, this is Tai Clarkson. I met her today at her softball game.”
“Hi.” Tai said simply with a smile. She looked up at Marshall, “You’re gonna get dirty.” She stated.
He just shrugged.
Dre looked at Marshall, “You went to a softball game?”
“Well, I was only there for the last out of the game. I had beekingking a walk and the crowd drew me. I wanted to see what was goin on.” He shrugged.
“Right.” Proof stated with a grin. “Anyway, this is Marlee Michels.” He gesturedthe the girl who was glaring at Tai.
When Marlee heard her name she straightened up and said hello.
“Well, lets get started.”
Marlee had been in the booth for about twenty minutes now and had already made a bunch of mistakes. Every time she messed up she glared at Tai who she had been staring at. Marlee knew Tai from ball. They had been playing against each other with Tai pitching and Marlee up to bat. Tai had thrown a bad pitch hitting Marlee on her anklebone shattering it. That was the last game Marlee will ever play.
Tai had been staring at Marlee since she got in the booth trying to figure out where she knew her from. She eventually gave up figuring that it would come to her sooner or later.
“Marshall.” Tai whispered.
He looked down at her. “Yeah?”
“Remember at the restaurant when I said that I hadn’t met anyone who didn’t like me?” She asked.
“Yeah.”
“Well, I think I just met number one.”
“Who? Marlee?” He looked at the girl in the booth to see her glaring in their direction. He raised a brow and she stopped when she saw she had been caught.
“Yeah, she’s been giving me the eye since we got here.” Tai grinned suddenly. She looked over at him, “C’mere I wanna see if I can make her mess up again.”
“What—”
She cut him off with a kiss.
They broke it off and stared into each other’s eyes, “You’re a brave girl Ms. Clarkson.” He whispered breathlessly.
“You have to be when you’re standing thirty five feet from a batter on the mound.” She paused, “and don’t call me ‘Ms.’ it makes me feel older than my twenty five years.”
Tai’s kiss worked and Marlee messed up again. She gave a frustrated scream and said into the mic. “Can you tell that bitch to get the fuck out of here! She messing me up!”
Proof, 50, and Dre turned around to see Marshall with his left arm around Tai’s shoulders again. Tai had her brow lifted while Marshall looked like he was going to blow his top.
END CHAPTER THREE
When I say ‘35’ feet I’m talking from when the pitcher jumps off from a 40-foot pitcher’s mound. Because when we jump off, it’s at least five feet.
Anyway, if you have any questions about the game let me know because it’s gonna be in this story.
Well that’s all for this chapter. I just want to say thanks to Ruby—my only—reviewer. Come on guys give me something here. Even if it’s just to say write more. I know that you guys are reading this. Well I hope to get at least five. Probably won’t thoughfeelfeel so unloved.
