Chapter Three
As James returned to the house that evening, he felt his insides twist. Though he hadn’t figured out what his big gesture was going to be yet, he had spent the afternoon trying to clear his head and was now psyched up to apologise to his boyfriend.
His heart sank as he walked into the living room to see Charlie sat alone. The remains of the coffee table had now been cleared up, and the younger man was sat watching TV. Swallowing back his nerves, James asked, “Where’s Matt?”
“He’s gone to see his parents for a bit. Said he needed some space.” Charlie looked up. “He didn’t say when he’d be back.”
James sighed. “I guess I deserve this.”
Charlie moved to switch off the TV. “Believe me, James; you’ll have more chance of him listening to you if you let him calm down. He was in no fit state to reason with when he left.”
“How do you mean?” James was instantly afraid for his boyfriend. “Is he…?”
“He’s upset, James. And he wants you to realise that you can’t let your private life spill over into everyday life.”
James sighed. “I don’t deserve him, Charlie. I can’t even think of something as simple as how to show him how sorry I am.”
Charlie noted the tears that laced the older man’s voice and moved closer. “You will, James. And you’ll have the benefit of a calmer Matt to apologise to.”
“I don’t know, I kinda feel like I deserve to have him yell at me some more.” James tried to fight the overwhelming urge to cry.
Charlie led his friend to the sofa and gently made him sit down. “That wouldn’t do either of you any good. You can’t get caught up in wanting to punish yourself for this, because you’ll only end up hurting Matt more.”
“I hate him being so mad at me.” James finally gave in to his tears. “I’ve treated him so badly, I realise it now, and I want to make it up to him. But I don’t know how.”
Charlie was about to reply when there was a knock at the door. The younger man went to open it, to be greeted by two police officers. A little concerned, Charlie asked, “How can I help you?”
“Can we come in?” the first asked. “We have something we need to tell you.”
“Um, sure.” Charlie felt his heart sink as he led the two officers into the living room.
James instantly stood as he saw their guests. “What’s happened?”
The second officer gave him a sympathetic look. “You might want to sit down. It’s about your friend, Matthew Jay.”
“Matt? But I thought…” James gave Charlie a questioning look.
Charlie shrugged. “He said he was going to his parents’.”
“Unfortunately, he didn’t make it that far.” The first officer sighed. “Your friend got into a fight with a gang near the station and is now in hospital, badly beaten.”
Charlie moved to catch James as the older man almost collapsed. In a whisper, James asked, “What have I done?”
“We were asked to come and inform you. His parents have already been called.” The second officer ventured forward a little. “Would you like a lift to the hospital?”
Charlie nodded, knowing he would have to take charge. “If it’s not too much trouble.”
James pulled away. “I…I can’t. Charlie, I…”
“James.” Charlie’s voice was stern. “This is your chance to show Matt what he means to you. If you let the argument stop you from being there for him when he really needs you, he’s never going to forgive you.”
James nodded, reluctantly moving forward again. “You’re right. I need to be with him.”
The first officer moved to shepherd him out of the house. “Come on. It won’t take us long to get there.”

As they arrived at the hospital, Charlie had to grab hold of James to stop him from searching the entire building. “Let’s do this the sensible way, James.”
James nodded, though clearly frantic with worry. He allowed Charlie to lead him to the reception desk, feeling as though none of this was quite real. Maybe it wasn’t his Mattie – but then how had the police known to come to them?
Through his concern, he heard the receptionist say, “We’ve been told not to let anyone in. The doctors want him to get plenty of rest.”
James’ anger flared at this. “We need to see him. I need to see him.”
“It’s okay, James.” Charlie placed a hand on James’ arm, both sympathetic and a means of holding his friend back. Turning back to the receptionist, he asked, “At the very least, let James through. It’s important.”
The receptionist let out an inconvenienced sigh. “Fine, he can go through. But don’t be long.”
Charlie turned to James. “I’ll be out here. And don’t worry – I doubt very much that he’ll turn you away now.”
James nodded, before asking, “Where is he?”
The receptionist gave him the name and number of the ward, and James walked off. He could feel his heart thumping as he walked, terrified of what he was about to see.
As he walked into the ward, he saw one bed curtained off and made his way over. Peeking through the curtain, he could see his boyfriend lying there, cuts and bruises covering his face. Swallowing back his fear, James slipped into the closed-off area. “Mattie?”
Matt looked up, looking warily pleased to see his boyfriend. “James…I’m sorry.”
James felt his heart twist at the weakness of Matt’s voice. Moving to sit on the chair by the bed, he replied, “You have nothing to be sorry for, Mattie. I’m the one who should be begging for forgiveness.”
“I should have ignored them…” Matt reached out his hand. “I was so afraid I’d never see you again.”
James gladly took the offered hand. “I’m so sorry, Mattie. I wish I knew how to show you how sorry I am. I’ve treated you so badly…”
“It doesn’t matter.” Tears laced Matt’s voice. “James, it doesn’t matter.”
“Don’t say that. It does matter, and I realise it now.” James gently brushed some hair from Matt’s face. “And I promise I’ll do better from now on.”
“It wasn’t all down to you. I should have said something. But it doesn’t matter.” The first tears rolled down Matt’s face. “What matters is that you’re here. I was so scared you wouldn’t come.”
“Charlie had to make me,” James confessed. “I was so scared that you’d still be angry with me, but he made me come anyway.”
“Where is he?”
James sighed. “The receptionist wouldn’t let him come up. She only let me up because we begged.”
“But you’re here now.” Matt’s voice trembled. “I love you so much, James.”
“I love you too, Mattie.” James felt his own eyes filling with tears. “I promise, I’ll treat you right from now on.”
“And I promise I’ll tell you if something’s bothering me.” Matt pulled James’ hand closer to him, forcing the other man to bend down so that Matt could kiss him.
James was about to speak when the curtain was pulled back and a nurse walked up to the bed. “How are you feeling, Mr Jay?”
Matt smiled a little. “Sore. But better.”
“Good.” The nurse turned to James. “We’re keeping him in overnight, just to make sure there are no serious injuries, but you should be able to take him home tomorrow.”
James nodded. “Thank you.” He stood up, squeezing Matt’s hand. “I’ll be back for you first thing.”
