Chapter 3
“Welcome back to The Bob and Tom Show. Goooood morning,” Bob Kevoian says as the radio show comes back from commercial.
“Good morning. Thanks for joining us,” Tom Griswald adds. “Over there is Kristi Lee at the news desk. Chick McGee is over at sports control. Right now we’re joined by actor Orlando Bloom.” Tom turns his attention to Orlando sitting on the other side of the consol. “Orlando welcome to the show.”
Orlando shifts on his stool and crosses one foot over the other knee. “Thank you. Thanks for having me,” he replies in his usual cordial way with a big smile.

Over the top of her glasses Vicki wat Jes Jessica pace back and forth in the greenroom down the hall from the on-air studio. She could tell that her friend’s mind was working on what she would say when she was invited into the studio. “Would you sit down? You’re starting to make me dizzy!” Vicki finally says.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” Jessica apologizes and quickly sits down on the couch next to Vicki. She nervously begins to bounce her knees. “It’s just that …all this waiting around is driving me insane!” They had been told that she would be asked into the studio during the next commercial break, which was only a few minutes away.
Vicki doesn’t look up from the magazine on her lap as she says, “Just relax and be yourself. You’ll be fine.”
“Yeah. I know. I know,” Jessica replies. She starts to nervously twirl the engagement ring that she still wore on her left hand.
As Jessica tries to wait patiently in the greenroom she listens to Orlando’s interview coming from the on-air speaker on the wall. She hears Tom say, “Well, we’re going to take a short break but afterwards we will meet Jessica O’Malley, the young lady who is the reason that Orlando is on the show this morning. This is the Bob and Tom Show.” Her heart starts to race for she knew that meant that she would be called in to the studio any minute.
“Jessica?” says a voice from just inside the door of the greenroom. Jessica looks toward the direction of the voice and sees Dean Metcalf, the producer of The Bob and Tom Show, standing in the doorway. He motions for her to come to the door saying, “They’re ready for you.”
Jessica slowly stands up, smoothes her skirt, and takes a deep breath. She starts to walk toward the door when Vicki stops her by saying, “Hey!”
Jessica looks down at her friend. “Good luck,” Vicki says with a big smile holding up her hand.
Jessica smiles and squeezes Vicki’s hand. “Thanks,” she replies softly.

Orlando’s attention is drawn to the studio door where he sees a thin, petite woman walk into the room. She is dressed all in black except for a short, red shirt under her jacket. Even the headband gently holding back her long, curly, red hair is black. He stands up and she looks in his direction to her right. A big, warm smile slowly stretches across her pretty face. Something about her intoxicating smile makes him smile in return. She seems to say a quick ‘Hi’ with her big, green eyes as his eyes meet hers for a brief moment. He returns the greeting before her eyes are torn away to greet the others in the studio. He watches her wave ‘Good morning’ to Chick McGee and Kristi Lee at their respective news desks.
~*~*~
After greeting the rest of The Bob and Tom Show cast, Jessica turns her attention to Orlando. He is wearing a white button-down shirt tucked into tight, black jeans. He leans forward slightly to position an empty stool to his left for her to sit on. She sees that the top couple buttons of his shirt are open giving her a glimpse of the muscular chest that lies underneath. As she approaches she is unsure of the proper greeting. She greeted everyone else in the room with just a wave or a handshake but she knew that when she greeted him it had to be special. She cat his his big, brown eyes with her own and gives him a warm smile. He returns the smile and extends his hands toward her. She tries to keep her hands from trembling as she places them in his and steps closer. When she is just on the other side of the stool from him he leans toward her and lightly brushes his right cheek against her right cheek saying, “It’s very nice to meet you … Jessica.”
Jessica closes her eyes as the feel of his warm breath against her ear sends a shiver down her spine. She inhales sharply and detects a hint of Aspen. She tries to keep her voice from wavering as she says, “Thank you. It’s very nice to meet you, too … Orlando.”
“You can call me Orli, if you’d like,” he replies quickly, standing back up straight. “Most of my friends call me Orli. I guess it’s just easier than Or-lan-do.” He emphasizes the length of his name with his hand.
“Okay … Orli,” Jessica replies with a shy smile. She reluctantly releases his strong, warm hands and sits down turning her attention to Bob and Tom sitting on the other side of the consol. Realizing that the part that she dreaded most was over she tries to relax. She follows Bob’s instructions to put on the headphones that sat on the counter in front of her and pull her stool up to the microphone.
As she puts on her headphones, Dean places a Bob and Tom Show mug of water on the counter in front of her. She thanks him and turns her attention back to Tom who briefs her on what to expect when they return from commercial. “I’m assuming this is your first time on the radio?” he asks with a smile. With wide eyes she gives him a quick nod as she adjusts her headphones. “Well, I’ll just let you know what’s gonna happen when we go back on the air so there’s no surprises. I’ll say that we’re now joined by you, Jessica O’Malley. Then I’ll say who you are for the people who may not have been listening that morning when I read the letter. Then I’ll just ask you some qionsions about the letter and about ‘Jake’s Bar and Grille’. Kristi & Chick will be doing the news on and off throughout the show. So, what do you think? You ready?”
Jessica exhales loudly and folds her hands on her lap. “Ready as I’ll ever be, I guess,” she says with a little nervous laugh and glances over at Orlando. He gives her a big reassuring smile.
~*~*~
“Hello! This is The Bob and Tom Show. Good morning,” Bob says as the radio show comes back from commercial.
“Good morning. Thanks very much for joining us. We need to get into some headlines with Kristi Lee but first lets meet our next guest.” Tom says and turns his attention to Jessica and Orlando sitting on the other side of the consol. “We’re joined now by Jessica O’Malley. Jessie welcome to the show.”
“Thank you, Tom. It’s wonderful to be here!” Jessica replies with a big smile.
“Now, for those of you who may not remember, Jessica’s friend Vicki wrote us a very interesting letter a few weeks ago,” Tom says and reaches for the letter in front of him. ”Vicki says in the letter … well, why don’t I just read the letter again. Dear Bob and Tom,” he adds as he begins to read the letter. “… if you could invite Jessie to meet her favorite actor, Orlando Bloom, in your studio on your show.” As Jessica hears the line read aloud for the second time she feels herself blush. She could feel Orlando’s eyes on her as she tilts her head down to try to hide her embarrassment. “So … Jessie,” Tom says after he finishes reading the letter.
Jessica snaps her head back up saying, “Yes?” She tries to forget about her embarrassment and give Tom her full attention.
“Now, I gotta ask … who’s idea was this? Was this Vicki’s idea or yours? Because this is a very unusual letter,” Tom asks with a little laugh. Everyone in the studio adds his or her own comment in agreement.
Jessica shakes her head slightly. “No. No. It wasn’t mine,” she replies with a laugh. “It was all Vicki’s doing. I had no idea that she was planning this.”
“Where did she get the idea? I mean … to collect money to donate to charity?” Tom asks.
“She probably got it from me,” Jessica replies and feels herself finally starting to relax. “I’ve been donating some money to local charities around Cleveland for a couple years now. Like the Cleveland Food Bank and the Salvation Army and the United Way. She probably did it because she knew I wouldn’t get mad at her for it.” While she spoke she glanced around at everyone in the studio.
“Are you originally from Cleveland?” Tom asks.
“No, actually I grew up right down the road here in Greenfield,” Jessica replies, pointing her thumb back over her shoulder.
“What made you move to Cleveland?” Bob asks.
“School. I went to Cleveland State for Business Management,” Jessica replies.
“Is that where you met Jake?istiisti asks from across the room.
“No. We didn’t go to school together. He was five years older than me. I met him while I was working at a bank while going to school,” Jessica replies.
“Okay … well … we’re going to ask Jessie a little bit about ‘Jake’s Bar and Grill’ in Cleveland but first we have to grab a couple news stories. Kristi, what have you got over there?” Tom says turning his attention to Kristi Lee sitting across the room at her news desk.
“Well, speaking of Cleveland,” Kristi begins and reads a crazy news story about a ‘robbery gone awry’ at a bank in Cleveland.
Jessica was amazed at how comfortable she felt being in a room full of people whom she had just met for the first time only moments before. She had laughed along with everyone on the Bob and Tom Show for so many years that she felt like she already knew them.
As they all laughed and joked about the story she would look over at Orlando sitting next to her. He always had a big, warm smile when their eyes met. Although she felt like she knew everything there was to know about him from magazines and interviews, she tried hard to forget about all that. She didn’t want him to think that she was just some crazed fan who knew that his favorite color is yellow and that he had a dog named Maude. Vicki’s words of advice kept going through her head: “Just be yourself.”
“We have to take a quick break but we’ll be right back with Jessica O’Malley and Orlando Bloom. This is the Bob and Tom Show,m sam says as the show goes to commercial.
~*~*~
“Now that wasn’t so bad, was it?” Orlando asks as Jessica folds her arms on the counter in front of her and rests her forehead on them exhaling loudly. She shakes her head and lets out a little groan, followed by a laugh.
Jessica snaps her head back up and stretches her arms out in front of her. “No,” she replies with a yawn and a smile. “Actually it wasn’t.” She removes her headphones and places them on the counter in front of her. She watches Orlando as he removes his headphones and runs his fingers through his hair.
He watches her reach for the mug in front of her. “Jessica?” he asks softly as she takes a drink of water from the mug.
“Hum?” Jessica replies and swallows. She sets the mug back down on the counter and turns toward him, flipping her hair back off her shoulder.
“Would you like to have dinner … with me … tonight?” Orlando asks as he watches her wipe a drop of water from the corner of her mouth with her thumb. He watches her facial expression change as her smile fades. His smile fades too as he raises his eyebrows with wide eyes. She lowers her chin to look at her hands folded in her lap. He begins to wonder if he’d said something wrong as he searches her face for some kind of sign. As she raises her head back up to look at him a sweet smile returns to her face.
“I would love to,” Jessica finally replies softly, looking straight into his chocolate brown eyes.
“Great,” Orlando says as his smile returns. He stretches his hands out on the tops of his thighs as he pushes himself back up straight on his stool. He didn’t even realize that he had leaned forward toward her as he awaited her response. He laughs to himself and scratches behind his right ear saying, “Boy, you kinda had me worried there for a minute.”
“Oh. I’m sorry,” Jessica apologizes. “It just … caught me off guard … I guess. It was … ah expeexpected.” She smiles as she feels herself starting to blush.
“Aw. Come on! I bet you get asked out all the time?” Orlando teases.
“No. Not really, “ Jessica replies.
“Get out!” Orlando exclaims.
“No. Really. I guess some guys just don’t want to get involved with a ‘workaholic bartender chick’ like me!” Jessica replies with a laugh.
Someone saying, “We’re back in 60!” interrupts their conversation. They each reach for their own headphones.
“Here we go again,” Orlando mumbles and rolls his eyes putting his headphones back on. He smiles and waits for Jessica’s reaction. She smiles and lets out a little giggle while putting her headphones back on.

“Welcome back. This is The Bob and Tom Show. Good morning.” Bob says as the radio show comes back from commercial.
“Good morning. Thanks for joining us. Once again we’re joined by Jessica O’Malley and actor Orlando Bloom,” Tom adds and turns his attention back to Jessica and Orlando. “So, Jessie, how long have you lived in Cleveland?”
“Well, I moved there right after high school so …” Jessica replies and thinks for a moment. “Eight … nine years, I guess.”
“So, that would make you … what … twenty-seven?” Bob asks.
“Yeah, I just turned twenty-seven in May, “ Jessica replies.
“Wow! So, you’re not even thirty and you own a bar?” Chick exclaims.
"Yep,” Jessica replies with a nod. "Actually I was only twenty-five when Jake first mme ame a co-owner.”
“Oh, so you’ve only been an owner for a couple years then?” Tom asks.
Jessica only has time to nod a reply before Bob asks, “So, what kind of place is it? Is it just a ‘shot and a beer’ kind of place or …”
“Oh, no! Not anymore it isn’t!” Jessica replies with a laugh. “When I first met Jake when I was in college it was such a 'dive'. They were on the verge of bankruptcy. But, when Jake found out that I was a Business major he started asking me what I think he should do to the place to improve business. So, I invested what little I had into the place and we expanded into the space next to us and made a full dining room.”
“Wow. Sounds like a nice place. Now that’s located … where … downtown?” Tom asks.
“No. We’re actually about half an hour out of downtown. We’re in Eastgate Shopping Center on Som Center Road in Mayfield Heights,” Jessica replies.
“O-kay. So … if you’re listening from Cleveland this morning stop in to ‘Jake’s Bar and Grille’ next week and say ‘Hi’ to Jessie,” Tom says. “We have to take another break but first let’s grab a quick news story.”
“Well, although the apocalyptic thriller ‘The Third Day’ doesn’t open until the end of the month,” Kristi Lee reads, “it already has people asking each other ‘What would you do if the world was going to end in three days?’”
Everyone in the studio, except Jessica and Orlando, take turns giving his or her own answers. Chick McGee has to be the ‘funny guy’ that he always is and says something about spending his last night alive with Julia Roberts. Jessica can’t resist the urge to tease and says, “Not to disappoint you or anything, C, bu, but I don’t think spending her last night on this Earth with you is at the top of Julia’s ‘To do’ list!”
Half way through her response Orlando could see where she was going with it and he had to hold back a laugh. “Yeah, Chick,” he adds, after Jessica finished, “I don’t think Julia’s in Europe or wherever shooting a movie thinking, ‘Ya know, before I die, I want to snog Chick McGee’!” Just hearing Orlando say the word ‘snog’ in his British accent makes everyone laugh hysterically.
“What about you, Jessie. What would you do?” Kristi asks from across the room.
“Oh, jeeze. Lemme think,” Jessie replies, “I would have to say … if I knew that the world was gonna end in three days … I think I would just come home to be with my family. They’re the most important think to me right now.”
“Yeah. I like that, too,” Orlando says looking over at Jessica. “I think I would fly home from wherever I’m at just to be with my mum and my sister.”
There was a pause before Chick exclaims, “Oh, bor-ing! You mean to tell me you’d spend the last days of your life just hanging out with your family?!”
“Yes! Those of us who enjoy being with our families …” Jessica says before being cut off by Chick.
“I’m not saying that I don’t enjoy being with my family …” Chick says, trying to plead his case.
“No. You’re just saying that you’d rather be off shagging Julia Roberts somewhere than spending your last days with them, that’s all,” Orlando climes in with a laugh.
“Well, I think we better take a break before things get really ugly in here!” Tom says with a laugh. “But before we do that we have to ask Orlando the big question. Thanks to Jessie and Vicki, you have $1000 to donate to a charity of your choosing. What charity would you like to donate the money to?”
“Oh, man!” Orlando replies, scratching his head. “Ya know, I hadn’t even thought about it.” He pauses for a moment and finally says, “Tell ya what. Is there a particular charity that you lot donate to often?
“Well, there’s a bunch of local ones that we donate to regularly,” Tom replies.
Orlando rubs his chin thoughtfully and says, “Tell ya what I’m gonna do. I’m gonna give the $1000 to you lot to donate to whoever you want … and I’m gonna throw in another $1000 … from myself … because you all have been so great to me this morning. How’s that sound?”
“Oh, that’s wonderful!” Jessica exclaims, lightly touching his arm. He looks down at her hand then looks up at her with a smile. Everyone else in the studio gives his or her own reply of surprise.
“Well … I would just like to thank Jessie and Orlando for joining us in the studio this morning. Come back anytime, you guys. We’d love to have you again,” Tom says.
Jessica and Orlando both say, “Thank you. Thanks for having me,” almost in unison.
“We have to take a quick break. This is the Bob and Tom show,” Tom says as the show goes to commercial.
