We left the hospital about 4 a.m. to avoid the press that we were sure would be hot on our tail. Vin and I were going to try our best to keep our babies out of the limelight for as long as possible. They had circumcised our son a few hours before we left the hospital and had arranged for a nurse to come over later on the same day just to make sure everything was running smoothly. Arriving home we laid the babies between us in the bed.
"They're just perfect," I said, so proud of myself for not falling apart.
"They are perfect and they both look like you." He said.
“When they took you away, were you scared?” I asked curiously.
“No, I wasn’t scared. I knew you would be fine because I prayed for you.” He replied.
“I was scared.” I admitted willingly.
“Yeah, I lying. I was so beyond afraid. All I could think about was losing you and what I would do without you in my life.” He said. “I don’t think I ever prayed so quickly and plentiful for anything in my life, as I did for you today.” He continued.
“I love you! You know?” I said.
“You better.” He said looking over at me endearingly.
"What are we going to name them?" I asked picking up our son. "We have been so busy with everything, and we never discussed it."
"Well what do you think?" He asked.
"I don't know. What did you call them when you were singing to them while I was asleep?" I asked adjusting the baby in the crock of my arm. He just balled up further and grunted.
"Well I called our little boy Mark." He smiled seeming a little unsure.
"I like that, Mark.” I said looking down at his little baby face. “What about little Mama?" I asked
"Well after talking to the doctor, I think I would like to call her Miracle." He answered.
"Miracle, wow that's a great name and very sweet." I replied.
He began to smile from ear to ear. "I named both of my babies," he said. "What would you do without me?"
"Hey don't get too cocky," I said shooting him the eye. "And we can call her Miri for short."
"Miri," he repeated. "I like that."
We only had one bassinet so we had no choice but to put one of the babies in the crib. I barely slept a wink, getting up every five minutes to check on them. When I finally did ge sle sleep, Vin was waking me to prepare for the nurse’s arrival. We went out for about an hour to pick up a couple much need things for the babies.
We made it home just in time. The nurse was on her way back to her car. Vin helped me in with the babies and the nurse began her examination, she even had a little scale. Her name was Mrs. Cornhorn and the kid inside me couldn't help but giggle. She told me that the babies had lost a few ounces since they left the hospital but it was normal so not to worry about it. After we talk a little more, she told me to keep a close eye on Miracle, who was only a few ounces bigger than a premature baby at birth, now five pounds, she was at a higher risk for crib death. She suggested breast-feeding Miracle in the football hold position because of her size and told me what to do about Mark's developing cradle cap and his circumcision. I felt so much more secure when she left.
I went upstairs into the baby's room and there Vin trying to figure out how to work the sleep-and-play we'd brought for Marky today. He wouldn’t let my lift it and barely touch it so I had to give him detailed directions of what to do. I almost laughed myself into a coma watching him. Once we were done Vin promptly put me back in bed. I picked up the telephone and called my parents, I hadn't talk to them since yesterday when the babies were first born. Starting to dial the phone I hear Marky whining up to a scream, just as I pressed the talk button to cut the phone off, Vin comes in with a hungry baby rooting for breast milk. He laid the fat little boy, who weighted in at 8 pounds into my arms, then he hurried out of the room.
Holding him there in my arms, his head buried into my chest, I began to examine him. He's a little pale, his skin is very soft and his hair is a nice shade of light brown like his Daddy's. Looking down at his ears and back he was one hairy little monsta. I am praying it will thin out because I don’t want to have to take a razor to my infant son. I pick the phone back up and call my parents. They were doing just fine, a little anxious to see their grand babies, but they knew we would be there soon enough. My Dad told me he was rebuilding the shed in the backyard. He told me to tell Vin to come up and help him. I told him that Vin had his hands full right now building babies. He just laughed and laughed and told me not to give him such a hard time. He told me a story about when I was first born and how lost he was, "I couldn't do anything right." He said. "Your Mom laughed so hard the first time she left me alone with you, she came home and I had your diaper on backward." He continued.
I laughed so hard my sides were beginning to hurt, Vin came in with Miracle and told me dinner was ready.
"Okay Daddy, it time for Mommy duty, I will talk to ya later." I said. "Goodnight baby doll." He said. My Mom was at church so I didn't get to speak with her.
“After feeding Miracle, I cleaned, dressed them both and put them down for the night. Going downstairs I see Vin has candles lit and the smell of food filled the room and my nose.
"You ordered out?" I asked with a smile as he came in and pulled out my chair.
He brought in a plethora of great dishes and replied, "Sure."
I could only laugh. We sat and ate by candlelight. The entire time discussing the cute little things, the babies had done. He was so engulfed in the idea of having a son but is amazed at the way Miri melts his heart, remarking that "he knows why my father is so crazy about me now."
"I love you so much," I say watching him from across the table. The excitement in his eyes told me that he was more then happy about being a Dad and our lives together.
