Chapter 3

One week had passed with Madison avoiding Justin at all costs. She made sure that she was wrapped up in meetings during the guys’ breaks. Maddie only took her breaks when the boys were in rehearsals. However, today was the day when the N’SYNC tour hit the roads, dragging Madison along for the ride.
Maddie headed towards the tour bus area and searched for Mark. “Maddie! OVER HERE!”, she heard him call. Unfortunately for her, he was standing with the guys.
“Man! You pack light compared to this Prima Donna over there!”, Chris said as he pointed towards Lance. Thinking he was just joking, Madison glanced at Lance and saw the five or so suitcases behind him! She began to grin at the blushing Lance but as she looked towards Justin, she instantaneously stopped. He was laughing but something in his eyes made her feel uneasy.
Silently, Madison hoped Justin knew that she was coming. “Okay people, here’s how its gonna go: Justin, Chris and Joe, you’re on bus #1, J.C. and Lance are on bus #2, Maddie, you and me are on bus #3. Is everyone okay with that? Good! Now get on your buses!”, Mark shouted out before allowing anyone to protest.
From behind, she heard the guys mumble, “Sure, I get stuck with stinky the eighth dwarf!”, Joey complained, while J.C. shouted after Lance, “...and remember, NO COFFEE AFTER CONCERTS! We don’t want a repeat of what happened last time!”.
Smiling, Maddie lugged her bags towards her bus when she felt a hand grab hold of her elbow.
“Justin!”, Madison said startled.
“Relax, I’m just gonna help with your bags.”, he said cockily with a smirk.
“No, thanks. I got it.”, Maddie huffed. She was clearly struggling with the load.
“Yea, whatever.”, Justin mumbled as he grabbed one suitcase from her hand.
“Look, Justin. I don’t want to be here but Mark said he needed me. I think it would be better for everyone if we avoided each other.”, Madison tried to convince.
“First of all, you’re here because Chris begged Mark to let you come, and ...”, Justin stated as Maddie mumbled, “ ... great! Remind me to thank him!”.
Leaning into Madison, Justin roughly whispered, “...second, why would I want to avoid you? We had so fun much last week.”. Shocked to hear what Justin had just said, Madison remained silent until they reached her bus.
Placing her bags beside a bunk, Madison began, “Justin, what happened that night won’t EVER happen again. It was disgusting and it made me feel awful about myself. I realize that we both made a mistake and we should just leave the past where it belongs. In the PAST. I don’t want you and you don’t want me.”.
Justin narrowed his eyes and spoke strongly, “I already told you that I want you. I told you all those years ago and now I’m telling you again. Maddie, my feelings for you haven’t changed. If anything, they’ve become stronger.”. His expression then softened, “If you would just give it a chance! You’ve got nothing to lose. We could be happy together like it was back then.”.
Madison looked up with tears in her eyes, “We weren’t happy together, Justin. So don’t bring up the past. If we were ‘meant to be’ then you would have met me first instead of Michelle! God! It’s been four years since I’ve talked to her! I tried to call her but she still hates me! Do you know how that makes me feel? AND, to make matters worse, you’re here telling me that we could still have a future together?”.
Justin’s voice grew louder, “Now who’s bringing up the past? Do you know how utterly frustrating you are?”.
Madison inhaled a deep breath to calm her overwhelming urge to slap the selfishness right out of Justin. She firmly shut her eyes and when they opened, she spoke softly, “Look, I don’t want to fight with you. I just want to do my job and that’s it. Please don’t make this any harder than it already is.”.
Justin looked into her chocolaty eyes and saw them pleading.
The noise of the tour bus door was heard. Mark reached the two and said, “Hey Justin! Hey roomie!”. Madison put on a bright smile as she turned her attention away from Justin and towards Mark.
He grinned excitedly, “You’re gonna have so much fun! We’re all like family here, eh Justin?! Besides, Maddie, you look like you need to loosen up a little!”. Mark continued on while Madison muttered in her mind.
The bus ride to the first venue in Virginia was long and exhausting. The schedule was to spend four days there; two for concerts and two days off. During the ride, Maddie and Mark talked about their lives and their experiences. She had no choice but to open up to him, not that she minded. Mark was so energetic, funny and great to talk to. He was like the brother Maddie always wanted. Maddie learned to be her self. All of her troubling thoughts concerning Justin seemed to have been erased. The key word was ‘seemed’ and everyone knows that what seems to be true isn’t always.
It was a warm morning and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. Maddie put on her sunglasses as she stepped off the bus.
“Hey kiddo!”, she heard from behind, it was Mark.
“Yah?”, she yelled back as she began stretching.
“I need you to go into the hotel and get the keys to the rooms. Oh...and tell them we’re coming in through the back.”, he instructed.
Nodding, Maddie took the file he gave her and walked towards the lobby. She saw the other buses go around back. Maddie got her first errand completed without a hitch. As she walked towards the back entrance, she saw the sleepwalking guys enter in with their unshaven faces and wrinkled clothes.
“Here are the keys. We have the entire top floor so there won’t be any security problems.”, Madison informed. She could almost feel Justin’s eyes roaming her face and down her body as a flush of heat reached her head. The keys were then distributed and everyone made their way on to the elevators. Madison could still sense Justin staring at her which made her entire body tense up. She couldn’t understand why she was reacting this way.
When they reached the top, Mark announced, “Okay, to make things easy, everyone shares a room with the people they shared a bus with.”.
Madison saw Justin’s head perk up. There was no way that he was going to let Madison and Mark sleep together in the same room. As everyone dispersed, Justin grabbed Maddie’s wrist and led her into an empty hallway.
Before she could yell, Justin covered her mouth and said, “Shh! Don’t scream and I’ll let go.”.
She nodded her head and Justin moved his hand from her mouth to caress her warm cheek. “You’re not sharing a room with Mark and I’m not rooming with Lance and his God-awful snoring!”, he said in a hushed voice.
“But you heard Mark...”, Maddie didn’t get to finish, “Yeah, I heard but he wouldn’t dream of sharing a room with you if he knew that we’re together.”, Justin absurdly stated.
Madison wriggled away from his clutches and rightly questioned, “Are you crazy?”.
“Justin, Maddie? What are you guys doing?”. Mark called out.
“Well, actually...”, Justin began before Maddie answered, “Uh, Justin needed some help with his luggage and I was about to help him with it!”. She breathed a sigh of relief as Mark bought the explanation and Justin remained quiet. Even through his silence, Maddie could feel Justin’s anger radiating. Quickly, she lifted a suitcase and lugged it towards his room. Mark had taken their stuff into their room.
Justin watched Madison. The thought of her sleeping in any room other than his, made him angry and perhaps a bit jealous. During the entire bus ride, he contemplated how he could be closer to Maddie. They had been apart for so long and now that she was back he hardly saw her. As Justin thought, a plan began to emerge.
“Thanks.”, he stated as Maddie began to leave. She simply smiled with a questioning expression that was apparent in her eyes. Madison was then out the door, leaving Justin to formulate his sure-fire plan.
“Okay Kiddo, here’s where the real work begins. I need you to call the venue and make sure things are running smoothly then check with the stylists and see if everything got here safely. Oh, and come back soon, I got a whole lot more for you to do!”, Mark spoke in a professional tone.
Madison admired him for knowing how to draw the line between friend and employee. If only Justin would learn that quality. Maddie smiled as she remembered the times when she and Justin were just friends and love hadn’t gotten in the way. The truth was that she had actually enjoyed his company quite a bit. Her smile soon faded as she realized that things with Justin could never be normal. Trying to shake the feeling, Maddie decided to immerse herself in work.
After about an hour or so, Madison made her way back to her room.
“Hey! So how’d everything go?”. Mark questioned.
“Everything went great. Tonight should go smoothly. Do you need me for anything else right now?”, Maddie said.
Mark replied by shaking his head.
Madison then began to walk towards her room, “I’m gonna take a nap.”.
“Uh, Maddie...”, Mark began before Madison poked her head outside of the bed room and asked, “Mark, where’s all of my stuff?”.
Mark walked towards her and answered, “Well Justin told me everything and don’t worry! I’m cool with it. I just wish you would have told me sooner!”.
Madison’s heart began to race, “Uh, Mark...What are you talking about?”.
“He said that you two were together. So I thought...”, Mark was interrupted, “WHAT? But you don’t understand...”, Maddie began.
“Madison, I explained everything to Mark and he understands.”, suddenly Justin appeared.
“Oh God!”, Maddie mumbled. She felt like she was going to pass out!
What the heck was going on?
