Chapter 3:Everything goes wrong.
“Wake up, sleepyhead. We have to be on set in one hour.” Reluctantly Orlando pushed away the sheets and got up. Still heavy with sleep he walked to the kitchen and took place at the table.
“I baked you an egg,” Sean said when he arrived with a pan in his hands. Orlando held up a plate to receive his breakfast.
“We have a big scene coming up today.” Sean let the egg slide on Orlando’s plate. Floating on a layer of melted butter, the egg fell off the plate on Orlando’s trousers. Orlando jumped up screaming: “You fool! Watch what you’re doing!”
“Sorry, I used too much butter.”
Using too much sliding stuff is one of you’re bad habits!”
“You never complained before!” With an angry look Orlando left the table and entered the bathroom. Sean cleaned up the mess.
“Aaaaaaah!”
“What’s wrong?” Sean asked terrified.
“There’s no hot water,” yelled Orlando from under the shower. A smile played around Sean’s lips.
“Just what that hothead needed,” he whispered. Sean went into the bedroom and got dressed. When he was almost ready, Orlando entered half naked and shivering. Sean smiled: “Cooled down?” Orlando gave him an angry look: “Not funny.”
“I find it very funny.” The smile on Sean’s face suddenly changed in an expression of pain when he just bumped his foot against a leg of the bed. Orlando laughed: “Now that is funny.”
“Why you ...” Sean cursed.
“Come on, softy,” said Orlando, “It’s not the end of the world.”
“But it hurts like hell!” Orlando knew that Sean was best left alone when he was angry. Or cursing. Silently they both got ready and left the hotel. The way to the set calmed them both as they enjoyed the landschape. When they arrived, it was very busy. People ran back and forth, director Wolfgang Petersen was shouting and giving instructions. As Sean and Orlando arrived, Eric came to them.
“Trouble,” he said.
“What kind of trouble?”
“The set isn’t in order. Some say it will take all day.”
“As long as they don’t keep me here for hours, I don’t mind,” answered Sean as he looked at the crew. The three men joined the other actors and soon they were laughing and making jokes. An hour later Wolfgang came to them.
“I’m sorry guys but it can take quite some time. I have arranged a bus and guide for you so whoever wants to visit the island can do so. Victor will be here in fifteen minutes.”
“Victor,” Sean said looking at Orlando, remembering their trip to Gozo.
It was a small bus that took them across the island. Luckily not many actors wanted to visit Malta. They were in eight: Orlando, Eric, Brad, Garett, Diane, Saffron, Rose and himself.
“And were are you taking us today?” he asked Victor. The bus driver smiled: “First I will take you to Valletta. Then I will show you San Anton palace and gardens, Popeye Village, and to finish Mdina.
“Are these places as nice as what you shown us on Gozo?”
“Of course. And there are many more on Malta.” Sean relaxed hearing this good news.

The bus stopped.
“Welcome to Valletta, the capital of Malta.” Victor cut off the engine of the little bus. One by one , the actors and actresses got out. They followed their guide till under the main gate. There, some artists were selling their works.
“The main street is called Republic Street and runs all the way through Valletta until Fort St. Elmo. On this street you find the most important public buildings, shops and the best cafés. So there’s something for everybody. We’ll meet here at 1 o’clock so make sure you had lunch. Have fun.” The actors saw how Victor went back to the bus and took off.
“So, what shall we do?” Sean asked.
“Let us stay together,” Diane answered.
“I’d like to see things on my own,” Brad responded.
“Why don’t we look for a place to eat and take it from there.” Everyone agreed on Erics proposal and they took off.
“Oh, yes. Burgerking.”
“Garett, not everyone likes that greasy food.
“I’m sorry,” Garett responded, “I forgot that you have to maintain you fake muscles.” Brad gave the young man an angry look.
“We didn’t come here to fight,” interrupted Rose.
“Look, Brad. It’s your little girlfriend who comes to the rescue.”
“I’m not his little girlfriend. It’s just a job that pays well.”
“You know how many women would like to be my girlfriend?” Brad said.
“Well I’m not one of them.”
“People, please. Stop arguing,” Saffron came between them. After some time Eric pointed at a place: “There, Café Cordina. Seems good.” Everybody agreed.
“Good, let’s split up and come back here at noon.”
“We’re going to see the fort,” Sean said.
“And we’re going shopping,” Rose responded.
“I’ll join you,” answered Eric.
“Well, I’m going on my own.”
“Can’t I come with you, Brad?” The man sighed: “Ok, then.”
“Fine, have fun everyone. The group split up.
“Diane,” Orlando said, “I thought you went shopping?”
“I can shop at home so I thought: Maybe I can come with you two?”
“You have no idea how happy you just made us,” Sean answered sarcastically.
“Great,” smiled Diane and went on.
“She didn’t get it,” Orlando whispered to his friend.
“I know.”

The two men followed Diane, hoping to find a way to dump her. The road went steeply downwards. Sean and Orlando took big paces. Diane tried to keep up.
“Guys. Guys! Wait up. I can’t follow.”
“We know,” answered Sean softly so that she couldn’t hear it.
“I’ve got an idea,” Orlando whispered, “Once inside we split up. The one who gets stuck with her must dump her somewhere. The other follows so that we don’t lose each other.”
“Deal.” They reached the entrance.
“Two tickets, please.” Sean paid and gave one to Orlando.
“Where’s my ticket?” Diane asked when she arrived.
“Everybody buys his own ticket,” Orlando answered. Sean suppressed a laugh. Diane bought a ticket. She turned round and saw no one.
“Sean? Orlando?” She saw the two men entering and went after them. When she reached the big square inside the fort, she saw Orlando going up a stair but Sean had disappeared. Diane followed the young man. He quickened his pace and climbed another stair. When Diane arrived, she saw a new, smaller square than the first one but the view was breathtaking. In front of her lay the sea. Suddenly Diane realised that she was alone. Orlando was gone. At the end of the square there was a little building where some people came out; she entered and her eyes had to adjust to the lessened amount of light; she walked towards a small window and took a peek. With a sigh she turned round and saw the face of someone she knew.
“Orlando?” The man wanted to leave but Diane took him by his arm.
“Wait.”
“Diane, …” struggled the young man, “There is something you should know.” Orlando sighed and gave the woman a chance to speak.
“On set we are lovers. Let us also be lovers behind the cameras.” Diane pushed herself into Orlando’s arms. The man hesitated, not knowing what to do in this unexpected situation. She kissed him, then looked him in the eyes, hopeful.
“Diane, …”
“Yes?” Orlando thought about the words he would say.
“I can never give you what you want.” Disappointed she went outside. Orlando followed her: “Diane!” He saw how she ran down the stairs.
Slowly he walked between the deserted buildings. No one was here. Most tourists stood at the great walls of the fort, overlooking the blue Mediterranean. In a bit of shade he took a brake. He closed his eyes and inhaled the warm sea breeze. A cooling wind touched his face. He opened his eyes and saw a woman standing very close.
“Diane,” Sean said in surprise and with a mischievous look on his face. The woman gave him a quick kiss.
“We need to talk,” Diane smiled.
“There’s nothing to talk about.” Sean got up but found his way locked.
“I can open an entire new world to you.”
“I doubt it,” Sean responded.
“We could be so good together.”
“I don’t think so.”
“We could try.”
“No.” Sean walked away.
“Are you afraid to tell me you are gay,” Diane attacked.
“I’m not gay,” smiled Sean.
“Is that why all your wives left you?” With an angry look Sean departed.
“Wait,” Diane said following Sean, “What I meant is that you can prove it.” The man stopped.
“What do you think about it, you and me.”
“No,” answered Sean.
“A threesome then.”
“Sorry, you’ll have to keep dreaming ‘cause more you won’t get.” Sean left. When he reached the gate, he saw Orlando waiting.
“Let’s go.”

“Next stop, San Anton Gardens.” The passengers stepped out of the bus and entered the gardens, bordered with an old wall. They saw strange trees and beautiful flowers. The shade was welcoming on this hot day. The little group grew thinner as a each actor went his own way through the web of paths in the gardens. On his left, Orlando saw a path that left the main garden and entered into a small, hidden garden. He went in. In the middle there was a fountain, surrounded by trees with big pink flowers. Orlando went closer and saw thick, pointy thorns on the stem.
“Dangerous tree.” He turned round. Sean stood in front of him.
“There’s no one here,” he said and kissed Orlando. It was a deep and intense kiss. The two men held each other tight. To make the kiss more passionate, Sean pushed Orlando against the tree. Immediately, the young man pushed him away.
“Are you crazy?!” he yelled at Sean.
“What do you mean?” With an angry look Orlando pointed at the tree.
“Ouch, mean tree,” answered Sean with a painful face. He checked Orli’s back.
“You’re lucky. No blood.”
“But it hurts like hell.”
“I’ll be more careful next time.”
“There won’t be a next time, because I’m never going to stand so close to that tree again.” Sean picked a flower from the tree and put it behind Orlando’s ear.
“To ease the pain,” he smiled. The wounded man threw away the flower and left with a sore face.
“Something’s bothering you?” Sean saw Eric next to him.
“It’s … nothing.”
“You can’t lie to me, Sean.” He didn’t answer.
“Trouble with Orlando?” Eric tried.
“An accident. I mean …” Sean looked worried, he betrayed his secret.
“I’ve known it for quite some time,” smiled Eric, “But don’t worry. You’re secret is safe with me.” For a second Sean smiled. He was relieved but also annoyed. If Eric knew, how many more would know it. He and Orlando always were careful. No one noticed anything when they filmed ‘Rings’. Maybe that was the problem. They took it for granted that nobody saw their love.
“Don’t worry. He loves you too much. Let him be for a while. He’ll come crawling back.” Eric laid his hand on Sean’s shoulder and left.

With big steps he made his way through the Gardens. When he reached a pond, filled with ducks, he stopped and took place on one of the benches. Behind the pond, Orlando saw parts of a palace coming through the thick leafage that separated the palace from the pond. Lost in his thoughts, the angry feelings disappeared and made room for the quietness that dominated the Gardens. Among the twisted branches of old trees, birds sang their song. The ducks floated above the calm water. Endless it went on, time was no more.
“Orlando?” He looked up, still trapped in his thoughts.
“We must go.”
“I’m coming.” Orlando got up and followed Garett, leading him to the gate. He turned round once and with a last look he said goodbye to this haven of tranquillity.

“Unbelievable,” Diane laughed, “Popeye was my favourite film and now I’m standing on the set of it.”
“I know,” Brad euphorically joined Diane.
“It was a good decision to maintain the set of the film. Many tourists come here,” explained Victor, “But today it’s quite calm.” On their own rhythms, the actors explored the little village. They entered houses – some still completely decorated –, took pictures or climbed the steep stairs that ended on top of the wooden houses. Sean took a deep breath from the sea air that floated the shores of Anchor Bay, home of Popeye Village. The view was spectacular. Standing on one of the roofs, he saw the entire set. People, like ants, made their way through the cosy streets.
“Fascinating, isn’t it.” Sean turned round.
“Sorry that I overreacted.”
“I’m sorry too,” Sean said.
“We can’t continue like this.”
“You’re right. Are we going to try again?” Sean asked. For a moment it was silent.
“Yes,” Orlando said, “Let’s begin again. But differently.”
“Differently, how?”
“We’re always hurting each other.”
“Do you mean sex without relation?” Sean asked wondered.
“I’m sick of relationships. Let’s just have fun and nothing more. For now.” Sean agreed. They both needed a brake, but the sex was good. Too good.
“Let’s play a game,” Sean proposed, “We go each our way and when we meet …”
“Sure.” Orlando left. Sean saw him walking through the streets and entering a house. When Orlando disappeared, Sean took the stair down. First he looked for Orlando, but could not find him. Instead, he enjoyed his visit to this unique place. The colourful wooden houses, the funny cardboards where you can put your head in and take a picture, the detailed decoration of the house he just entered, …It was silent inside. His fingers slid over the objects, the table, a chair, a small vase. Sean felt like walking into a memory, a mirror of what once was. The mirror. He saw his own reflection and the room around him, the door and a person. Sean turned. The young man came nearer. His soft lips touched Sean’s. They looked each other in the eyes. Orlando kissed him again. This time it was an intense kiss, warm, passionate, wet. Their arms wrapped around their bodies. Their fingers caressed their backs. Sean pressed the young man against him. He stopped the kiss and continued it in Orli’s neck. His hand grabbed Orlando’s bottom. The young man loved it. It had been a hard day, but now they would both be able to release the aching feeling inside them. Orlando opened his eyes and say the mirror.
“Do you know that you’re getting a bold spot here?” Sean immediately released him.
“What?”
“Well, you’re getting …” Orlando started, pointing the place on his own head.
“I heard you the first time,” interrupted Sean him indignantly. Without saying another word, Sean made his way for the door, leaving Orlando behind who was begging him to stay. The young man stared at his friend and remained only with the silence of the room.
Orlando left the house. He wanted to forget. To forget this horrible day. Everything between him and Sean went wrong. And the day wasn’t over yet.
“Who knows what’ll happen next,” Orlando said to himself. He heard a laughter. It was a woman’s laughter. Too shrill for his taste. It was Diane. Orlando saw her standing with someone, a man, …Sean. He had his arm around Diane’s shoulders, Orlando negatively nodded. This couldn’t be true. Sean would never cheat on him. But then, they weren’t together anymore. A twitch in his stomach made Orlando come back to reality and he realised that what he had with Sean could be over. For good. He turned and left. Behind him Sean’s laughter filled the air.

Not listening, Orlando sat next to Brad, who was making an entire statement over his marriage with his Jen. Sean stood solemn at the seven meter broad wall that had protected Mdina, the Silent City, for several centuries against invaders; Orlando joined him.
“Diane went to buy some drinks,” said Sean immediately.
“What are you doing?” Orlando asked quietly.
“Getting lain.” Orlando gave him a shocked look. Sean laughed.
“It’s not that we’re together.”
“I know. And I don’t mind. It’s just …”
“Just what?” Sean was irritated.
“It’s Diane.”
“So?”
“Things between us weren’t THAT bad.” Sean turned away.
“I’m old enough to make my own decisions.”
“Fine, do what you want,” Orlando answered calmly and left. He greeted Diane, who came back with some bottles of water, and rejoined Brad.
Orlando absorbed the serenity of the little city Mdina. The narrow streets were winding, leading the actor to new, undiscovered places. The labyrinth of streets was another defence system of this ancient city. It took Orlando some time before he found his way back to the main gate. He followed a street, entered another one and realised that he hadn’t been here before.
“Oh, great.”
“Lost your way?” It was Sean.
“Lost Diane?” Orlando asked sarcastically.
“I wanted to give you another chance.”
“So now you blame me for everything that happened?” Orlando was irritated, angry. Sean rubbed his chin, he seemed to be thinking about something. Then, when he made up his mind, he walked towards Orlando.
“Diane is nothing compared to you,” he whispered in Orli’s ear the moment he passed.
“Sean!” The man turned. Without saying anything, Orlando took Sean’s face between his hands and kissed him. It was a wild kiss, like Orlando had to prove something. For a few seconds, the world around them was no more. They both felt the aching inside again and wrapped their arms round their bodies. The wild kiss became deep, strong. Sean stepped backwards to find some support against a wall and pulled Orlando towards him. The older man felt something near his butt, yet did not get the time to think about it. A whole day did he longed for this and nothing would get in his way. The two men kissed each other eagerly, almost swallowing. They pressed themselves to the other and Orlando pressed Sean against the wall.
“Orlando,” murmured Sean.
“Not now.”
“Orlando!” The young man released.
“What?” He wasn’t happy and saw the same expression on Sean’s face.
“This bleedin’ door handle squeezed my butt!”
“I’ve had enough of this.” Orlando turned his back to Sean and left.

The night fell. After dinner with the entire cast, Orlando withdrew to his room. Hours he waited for Sean and while time passed he knew that Sean was visiting someone else, Diane. A knock on the door. Orlando opened, hoping it was Sean.
“Hey.” It was Eric. He got in.
Things aren’t going well between Sean and Orlando. They both spend the night with someone else. Will it ever become good between them? Find out in Chapter 4.
