Orlando practically skipped out of the building. Fergi had looked at him like he was crazy, but he didn’t care. He had just had a wonderful and relaxing time with a woman. A woman who didn’t’ have an agenda. His hands still felt warm from touching her. He got into his car and looked at the piece of paper with her numbers on it. Her hands had been shaking. Orlando smiled thinking about how shy and nervous she was. Kellie Parks was someone who wouldn’t beg to be in the spotlight. She wouldn’t insist he take her to previews and parties. No, she would just be happy to be with him. As he drove he planned on when to call her. He would wait a few days, maybe. Then he would call and see what her plans were for the weekend. Elijah was having a party next weekend at his home. Orlando thought it would be a perfect date and a way to get to know her better. Not to mention her ankle would be much better and she could meet some people. Now if he could just avoid the temptation not to call her as soon as he got home. Sidi met him at the door when he got in. He was very happy to see his master. “Hey, did you miss me? I bet you’re hungry.” At that Sidi turned and lunged towards the kitchen. When the dog hit the linoleum he slid and crashed into his food dishes. Orlando cringed “I would think you would learn not to do that by now.” Sidi just stood there panting. Orlando fed him and then went into the living room. He sat on the couch in front of the TV. It was on, but Orlando’s mind was on Kellie. He didn’t move until Sidi crawled onto the couch next to him, demanding to be petted. “I have someone for you to meet. I hope you like her as much as I do.” He said as he scratched Sidi’s chin.
Orlando controlled himself and didn’t call Kellie until Monday. He waited until mid afternoon and then called her home number. It rang four times before the machine picked up. “Hello! You’ve reached Kellie Parks. I’m not home right now so please leave a brief message and I’ll get back to you. Have a nice day!” It was a short and cheerful message, but Orlando didn’t wait for the beep he just hung up. He looked at Sidi laying at his feet. “She must be out, I’ll try her cell.” Again he dialed and it rang four times before her voice mail picked up. The message was more brief, “It’s Kellie leave me a message!” Exasperated Orlando hung up the phone. This routine continued until Thursday. Orlando finally decided to go over to Kellie’s apartment.
Kellie had been spending the week taking long walks along the beach. She was pushing her ankle to get stronger. It hadn’t ever once occurred to her to take her cell phone. Nobody ever called her and she hadn’t expected to hear from Orlando. Truth was she was a little disappointed that he hadn’t called. She was deep in thought about this as she walked through the surf on Thursday afternoon. Kellie was wearing cutoff jean shorts and a t-shirt. Her hair was twisted into a bun. She had her head down and didn’t see the figure coming towards her.
Orlando had tried her apartment and after noone answered the door he had decided to take a walk on the beach. He had removed his shoes and rolled up his jeans before he noticed a figure in the distance. As he got closer he realized it was Kellie. Orlando didn’t say anything until he got right behind Kellie. “Hey.” He said quietly. “Yikes! Oh my gosh!” Kellie spun around and turned bright red when she realized it was Orlando.
“You’re a hard person to get a hold of.”
“I am? I haven’t gone anywhere, but here all week.”
“I’ve called everyday, but I haven’t left any messages.”
“Well there’s your problem, if you would have left a message I could have called you back!”
Kellie smiled triumphantly. She would have called him back immediately.
“You should carry your cell phone.” Orlando smiled as she blushed. “I forgot about that.”
“No problem, I just decided to come over and now I’ve found you!”
“Was there something you wanted to talk to me about?” Kellie asked as she began to walk back towards the building. “As a matter of fact yes. A friend of mine is having a party on Saturday. I was wondering if you’d like to come with me?” Orlando asked. Kellie looked up quickly. She was unsure of what to say at that moment, so she continued to walk. When they got to the back door of the building, Kellie punched in her key code. “What kind of party is it?” She finally asked. Orlando held the door for her and then followed her inside. “It’s just a regular party, casual dress, that sort of thing.” He followed her into the elevator. “Who is this friend?”
Kellie asked again. “It’s Elijah Wood, he throws a party every other weekend. I thought you might enjoy it and get to meet some new people.” Kellie’s face had paled as soon as he mentioned Elijah’s name. Kellie walked out of the elevator and unlocked her door. Orlando followed her into the apartment. She didn’t say anything to him until she had pulled a Pepsi out of the fridge and returned to the living room.
“You want to take me to a party at Elijah Wood’s house?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t know that I would fit in.”
“Why not?”
“Well....to begin with I’m not an actor or a model.”
“I’m missing your point I guess.”
“I don’t think I’d fit in. I have nothing in common with these people.”
Orlando laughed at the last statement. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Obviously she had a self esteem issue and he was about to address it.
“You will fit in perfectly. Just say yes and be ready at seven.”
“Ok, fine I’ll go, but if anyone makes fun of me or picks on me I’m leaving.”
“Agreed, now are you hungry?”
Kellie laughed at his abrupt change in subject. They ended up ordering a pizza and watching some TV. Kellie kicked Orlando out at midnight. She needed to mentally prepare herself for Saturday and it was going to take the next two days.
The next two days were spent in a frenzy of preparation. Kellie found a salon nearby where she got her hair trimmed and highlighted. She then got her legs and bikini line waxed. Her next endeavor was a fake tan professionally sprayed on. When it was all said and done she looked quite good. Her next mission was clothes. Orlando had said casual, but did he mean it. Would her favorite jeans do? Kellie decided that they would. She did by a few new tops though. All of which were thrown aside by six thirty. When Orlando range her door bell Kellie had decided on a pair of faded low rise Levis with a snug fitted pink polo shirt. She had also decided on her favorite pair of flip flops. She left her hair down and minimal make-up. She knew she had done well when Orlando’s face lit up at the sight of her. Orlando had indeed meant casual. He himself was wearing faded Levis and a t-shirt. Nothing special. Kellie had almost sighed out loud with relief.
“You look great!”
“Thanks, so do you.”
“You’re going to have fun.”
“I hope so.”
