Darren’s eyes were wide, his mouth open as jumbled memories mulled around inside his brain. He suddenly felt very cold, some unknown fear clenching at his heart.
“Wh-what was that?” Daniel was the first to speak, confused and disturbed by the final images he had seen on the screen.
“All will be made clear in due time, you must be patient, Daniel.” The angel replied stiffly, seemingly unaffected by the disconcerting images they had just seen.
“A-Are you saying that I-I was murdered?” Darren stammered frightenedly, “Wh-why would someone….is that why we’re all here? W-were we all murdered? Was it by the same person? I-I don’t understand, please, you’ve got to tell me…please…” Darren begged, desperate to find out what had happened to him, racking his brain for any other memories of his last night on earth, both longing to know what happened and desperate to forget the piercing scream he had heard inside his head only moments earlier, his own terrified voice echoing inside his brain.
“Fuck this” the second, still un-named man exclaimed, “You mean to tell me that some sick nut-job offed us all?! No way! That’s not fair…why would someone do that? Darren here didn’t deserve to die, none of us did! This isn’t fair!” The second man was angry, and frightened. Daniel was silent as he listened to the other man, digesting what he said; dread clutching at his own stomach. The angel was silent for a moment, waiting to see if anyone else wanted to add anything before they continued with the “trial.”
“Let us continue, shall we?” the angel prompted after no one spoke. “Steven Burns, we shall view your history now, followed by the night in question, are you prepared?” It took the second man a moment to realize that the angel was addressing him, his own name sounded strange to him.
“Yes….I-I’m ready, let’s get this show on the road, right?” He seemed nervous, afraid of what he might see, but unwilling to put it off any further. Darren was trembling slightly, still confused and disturbed by the images in his own mind. Daniel quickly crossed the short distance of the room to where his lover sat, embracing the smaller man tightly, doing what little he could in order to console him, Daniel’s own heart-strings tugging in remorse for the angel in his arms.
The wall once again became a screen; the movie that began playing was one of a much more dark nature. Steven’s entire childhood seemed to have been spent in a cramped dark room, locked away from the outside world. At the age of twelve he had learned how to avoid his drunken father, hiding away from his overly religious mother. One day that was particularly vivid on the screen a young version of Steven had found a kitten in an alleyway near his house. It was small and white, but covered in dirt and a little too skinny, the poor thing couldn’t have been more than a month old. It was cold and frightened. The image of young Steven cradled the poor thing in his arms gently, petting it, scratching behind its ears, causing it to purr happily.
The boy took the kitten back home, hiding him away in his room, feeding the animal scraps from the kitchen and a saucer of milk. He watched the cat play, pet it, loved it, let it love him….
The next morning the boy brought another saucer of milk up to his room in order to feed the kitten. He pet it gently, causing it to purr once more, licking the boys face lovingly. Steven hugged the kitten tightly, squeezing it to his chest. The kitten let out a soft mew of discomfort, but Steven just smiled, squeezing the kitten harder. The kitten tried to get away but the boy easily held onto it. His eyes were blank and unfeeling as he took the kitten by its neck, crushing its throat in his hand, smiling softly to himself as the kitten mewled in distress. In a matter of moments the kitten was still, its desperate mewling had been silenced, and its lifeless body dangled from Steven’s grasp. The boy laughed, taking the kitten’s body outside, and stuffing it in the trash can to the side of his house.
The three men gasped as they saw the sadistic brutality in the young child’s eyes, the way he discarded the kitten’s body so carelessly, after showing it such tenderness before.
“No…I couldn’t have, I wouldn’t have.” The second man shook his head in disbelief, looking to the angel, “This isn’t my life, please, it can’t be….”
“It is most definitely your life, Steven…you remember it don’t you?”
“N-no…I-I don’t want to…p-please….I don’t want to remember what I did!” Steven begged, shutting his eyes to block out the images that were pouring into his mind…all the animals he killed….all the pain he felt, consuming him…the girls who laughed at him…how pretty they looked as they begged….All of his victims over the years blurring together on the screen, their anguished cries echoing inside his mind.
“NOOOO!!” Steven screamed, ripping at his hair, thrashing on the floor of the room, as the memories tormented him. Darren watched with an expression of horror on his face, the flash of blood and skin that was in his own memories paling in comparison with what they watched on screen now. Daniel tightened his grip on his lover, a feeling of dread filling him as the images on the screen finally died away, leaving the inhabitants of the room thoroughly shaken.
“Very well..., you remember what you’ve done…we shall move on to more important matters.” The angel spoke stiffly, wrinkling his nose in dignified disgust at the images that had just passed over the screen. Steven sobbing whimperings had quieted down…. His body was still trembling….but outburst seemed to have taken a lot out of him….When he finally looked up again, Darren and Daniel did not recognize the man that they had met earlier….he seemed changed…frighteningly so, as he stared up at the angel, gesturing to continue with the show, smiling dreamily.
The screen lit up again, showing a rainy afternoon in the city. People were rushing up and down the streets, desperate to get somewhere warm and dry, hurrying along the congested sidewalks. The streets were glittering from the light rain fall, clouds blocking out the sun, giving the day a very maudlin feel indeed. The images on the screen were as if the inhabitants of the room were looking through Steven’s eyes, as opposed to watching a movie like they had been doing previously.
Stevens’s vision jumped from person to person as he walked down the busy sidewalk, cold sullen faces met his own, briefly as they hurried to find shelter from the steadily growing downpour of rain. Steven was in no hurry, much to the annoyance of those around him who began shoving past him aggravatedly.
In the shuffle of people around him, Steven lost his balance, tumbling to the wet pavement, dropping his satchel, its contents spilling out onto the ground. He scrambled to retrieve his ruined belongings as the crowd around him began to dissipate with the growing rain.
As he was collecting his belongings, a voice caught his attention, followed by the most beautiful laughter he had ever heard. His vision moved swiftly to find the owner of the laughter eyes settling on young man with long dark hair framing his face, dripping wet from the rain,
Daniel’s grip around his lover tightened even further as the pale angel appeared on the screen. Darren was laughing, spinning around playfully in the rain, in no rush to make it inside, urging Daniel to come out from his hiding place under the entrance way of a tall building and join him in the rain.
“Come on Danny!” He shouted, dragging the taller man out into the rain, laughing as Daniel scowled, immediately becoming as soaked as his blue-eyed lover. “I love it when it rains!” He exclaimed, “The streets all look so pretty, dontcha think?!”
“Mhhmm….sure Dozer.” Was Daniel’s sarcastic reply, though he was smiling as his lover swatted him in mock annoyance.
The vision was transfixed on Darren. His every movement, his childlike playfulness, the way the area around him seemed to sparkle with some kind of happiness that Steven was not a part of. Steven wanted to partake in that bliss, to be a part of the angel’s world. Darren squealed as Daniel grabbed him around his waist, spinning him around in the rain. The two shared a kiss before walking off together, Darren relenting to letting Daniel cover them both with a large umbrella. The angel did not even notice Steven watching him, did not bother to even take note of the unhappy man’s existence. Steven growled to himself in displeasure as he slung his bag back over his shoulder. He would make the beautiful man know he existed…He would be part of the angel’s world.
