She looked around the pretty packed venue to see maybe two hundred or so kids, mostly punk-rock ruffians, skulking in the corners of the relatively large room. She checked her watch, 9:30. Still a half hour until the first band comes on...she turned her head to find Marina right by her side, completely Gerard-less.
"Where's Gerard?" Luca asked trying to sound as disinterested as possible.
"Oh, he's friends with some guys here, he went to go talk to them i think." She smiled broadly. "So, what do you think of him?" she asked coyly.
"Of who?" Luca looked away, pretending to survey the crowd again.
"Don't give me that!" she mockinly shook her finger at Luca. "Gerard, of course!"
"Oh. He seems nice." she shrugged.
Marina gave her a blank stare. "Nice? That's all you can say, nice? Not, oh Marina he's cute, or he seems like an great catch, or are you two dating yet? Just N I C E?!"
Luca's breath caught in a lump in her throat. Are you two dating yet? SHE likes him? Oh God....she did say my GOOD FRIEND Gerard! That was a hint!
"Uh.....sorry Marina, I wasn't really thinking.....uh....so you, like, want to date him or something......you guys are like really close?" She did her best to hide the dissapointment in her voice. What is wrong with me! I just met the guy, and really it's not like that's even an issue anyway! It's not like he's a prime cut either......and there are plenty of guys back home that i could have.. ......OF COURSE Marina should like him, she found him. Right....? She knew she didn't really believe that for one second.......his eyes.......his smile.......NO!!! She mentally derailed that train of thought before it could go anywhere. No if's or but's; this was not something she was even considering, no matter how damn charming he seemed!
She then realized that Marina had been babbling on the whole time she had been having that internal conversation. ".....and I mean, I really like him. He's so sweet and smart, and he treats me so nicely....... Oh, Lu, he's just great!"
"So you guys are dating then?"
"I WISH!" Marina made a pouty face. "He broke up with his girlfriend like 6 months ago, and I don't think he's really over her yet....she was a total mental case, turned him spineless, insecure.....quite a number. And I think that he likes me. I mean, he's kind of shy around girls, but we do spend an awful lot of time together, and he calls me. And he's perfect! Great sense of humour, wonderful smile...." she sighed. "I can see it, totally...." She just rambled on, in her own little world entirely, almost as if Luca wasn't listening to her. But she was.
"Oh, yeah, that's nice Marina. He's seems...." she trailed off. Marina wasn't even listening anymore. The crowd had started cheering, and Marina's eyes were fixed on the stage, beaming smile, staring at something Luca was obviously unaware of. Luca turned her head to the stage, and realized that the first band was on. She looked around the crowd again, as they started to move towards the stage. No sign of Gerard anywhere. Where did he go.....?
"Hey Marina, speaking of Gerard, don't you think he should BE here somewhere?"
"Oh, don't worry, I know where he is!"
"Well-" Luca was interrupted by the band beginning to play. She had to yell to be heard over a strangled guitar riff. "Well, when's he coming back?"
"You'll see! Now let's enjoy the show!" Marina pointed to the stage and went into her own little dancing world. Luca shrugged and watched the show.
By the time the second band had finished their set, Luca had grown more and more anxious over the mysterious dissappearance of Gerard. Not that the bands hadn't been worth listening to, far from it. She was just...preoccupied. I'm not worried, she told herself, it's not like I want him to be here, but I'm sure Marina does.....she looked around the room for the umpteenth time, and sighed a little as, once again, there was no sign of him. She finally turned to Marina as the crowd started cheering for the band when they left the stage.
"So, what now?" Luca asked Marina.
"Well, we wait for the last band!" Marina smiled widely.
"What's this band's name again?"
"My Chemical Romance," she replied without skipping a beat.
"My what?" Luca asked skeptically.
"My Chem-ic-al Ro-ma-nce. Geez, you really have been gone for too long! They're local, pretty well known in the punk circuit. They also happen to be friends of mine. But they're really good. And I'm not just saying that!"
"Uh-huh," Luca replied. "So, any of them cute?" She asked, only half jokingly.
"Why? You looking for some action?" Luca just laughed.
"Couldn't hurt!" She replied and Marina laughed back.
"Well, the lead singer's cute, really cute - actually, they're all pretty cute. Just wait, you'll see!"
"Whoa, wait - you have a crush on the singer? Ooooh, won't Gerard get jealous?" Luca teased.
"No, I think he'd be okay with it.......you could say they're... well acquainted." She winked at Luca, and Luca just shook her head and laughed.
"What, did they, like, make out or something?" she laughed, and then stopped. "Wait, Gerard's not.......is he? Is he Gerard's boyfriend?" Marina faked a shocked look.
"NO! I didn't mean well acquainted! I just meant like good friends, like.....brothers or something."
"Oh, well, that's not as much fun." Marina just stuck her tongue out at Luca, and Luca stuck hers out right back. They both turned as the crowd started cheering again. The last band was about to come on stage.
"It's MOSH TIME!" Marina yelled, running towards the stage. Luca just laughed and followed, getting as close to the pit as she dared, not really wanting to get dragged into the sea of hardcore moshers. She looked up at the stage, waiting to see these cute boys that Marina had talked about. And finally they came on stage. Hmm.....that guys not bad, she thought of a small guy with a blonde and black mohawk who came on stage, weilding his guitar with the word PANSY on it in shiny silver letters. The other guitarist, a taller guy with a big mass of curly brown hair and LIPS! followed him out. Then came another taller guy carrying a bass, quite lanky, looks kind of like a vampire, she thought, noticing his black high collared jacket/red bandana combination, with a shorter guy behind him, blonde hair, pretty normal looking, who took his spot behind the drums. The band started to play an opening riff, prepping the crowd for the entrance of the singer. So where's this singer? She had just started to wonder when he appeared from the shadows behind the stage. Not too tall, a bit stocky, kinda looks like a vampire too, she chuckled to herself, only to almost choke on her laughter when she realized who it was.
"Gerard?!" she hadn't meant to say it out loud, or as loudly as she had, but what?!
The band continued their intro, and Gerard picked up a mic. "Hello, hello!" He yelled into the microphone waiting for the crowd to answer him, which they did in a strenuous pitch. Luca just stood their, stunned, as without further ado, they launched into a gut-busting mosh song, Gerard screeching fevered vocals into the tinny mic.
She searched out Marina in the front row, and grabbed her arm, yelling in her ear, "You didn't tell me he was IN the band! I thought maybe he was friends with them!"
Marina just smiled, bobbing up and down with the crowd, her black and blonde hair bouncing along with her. "I wanted to surprise you! Plus, I wanted to know what you really thought of him; I didn't want you to just like him because he was in a band or because his friends are cute! " Luca just looked at her blankly, still firm in her disbelief. She turned her eyes up to the stage and observed him for a few moments. How can he be so....charismatic up there?! She watched him flail the microphone around himself like a lasso, and then wrap it around his neck as a noose. She couldn't make out much of the words between the pounding of the bass and drums and the duelling guitars, but what words she could were filled with gory, comic-book like imagery, heart-break, and death. But despite her reservations, she couldn't help it. The songs were well, good. She jumped up and down with the rest of the crowd, and yelled back when Gerard asked the crowd to scream. How is this possible?! He seemed so quiet and shy before! Where does this come from?! She wondered in admiration. Everything about his performance was over the top, but he was being honest in a way that she had never seen before. And it floored her.
Almost too soon, the show was over, and she watched Gerard leave the stage, somehow sad that little piece of truth was gone. Marina fished her out, and pulled her over to the side of the stage. "So?" she asked expectantly. "What did you think?!"
"It was just...I don't even know.....it was awesome!" she smiled at Marina. "He was amazing up there! Just totally.......and his voice.. ..and the band.....it was great!" Marina smiled back.
"See, I told you they were! Didn't I tell you?!" Luca smiled.
"Yeah, you were right!"
"Of course I'm right! Now let's go!" She grabbed Luca's hand and lead her over to the door beside the stage.
"Where are we going?!" Luca asked, worried that they were going to get into trouble or something.
"Backstage, duh! Remember, I'm friends with the band!" She pulled her in through the door, and Luca found herself amidst a swarmfull of sweaty, gabbing band members from all three bands and their respective entourages. Gerard had seen them come in and waved Marina over.
"Hey guys, what did you think of the show?" he asked excitedly. Marina answered before Luca had a chance to open her mouth.
"It was great, you did so good!" she gushed
"Aw, thanks Marina!" He pulled her into a sweaty hug, making sure to rub his face against hers to cover her with sweat as well. Luca burst out laughing as Marina rampaged, pushing him away hard.
"Ew, GERARD! That's DISGUSTING!!!! You're lucky you don't have syphillis or something!" She wiped her hand on her face to get rid of the wetness. Gerard just laughed and looked over at Luca.
"What did you think of the show, Luca?" he asked, his eyes they're green, really green! boring right into hers. She really liked the way he said her name...
She momentarily forgot how to work her tongue. "Uh....my.....um...I mean....It was good." She paused, swallowing visibly. "I mean, it was really good. Really good! I'm totally a fan now!" She continued, mastering her speech once again. Dammit, what the hell?!
Luckily, Gerard hadn't seemed to notice her momentary speech impediment , and smiled back at her. "Thanks, it's good to know that we can make new fans!" He smiled down at Marina, who had firmly attached herself to his arm, and pushed through the crowd towards a couch in the corner, sitting down in the midst of his fellow bandmates who were talking and laughing loudly.
"Hey guys," he said loudly to grab his friends attention as he lowered himself to the couch. He pointed at Luca. "This is Marina's friend Luca. Luca, these are the guys: Frank," he pointed to the guy with the mohawk, who waved "Ray," the guy with the curly hair, "Bob," the normal looking one, "and my baby brother, Mikey." He leaned over , all conspiratorial like and whispered in her ear, loud enough for everyone to hear him, "Don't call him Michael though, he hates that!" Mikey mocked being offended at the thought, and then punched Gerard in the arm.
"Hey now! Be nice, or I'll keep these two lovely ladies to myself!" Gerard put one arm around Marina, and then patted the couch on the far side of him, motioning for Luca to sit down. Did he just say "lovely ladies" as in both of us? Oh God... She remained standing. He gave her an inquisitive look, but she just turned her head, pretending she hadn't noticed.
"Luca....that's a really pretty name. It's different." Frank smiled at her, and she was thankful for the distraction of talking to him rather than wondering why she wasn't sitting next to Gerard.
"Thanks, uh....Frank right?"
He chuckled, "Yeah, that's right. Kind of bombarded you with all those names, didn't he?" she nodded.
"It's so hard when you meet so many people at once, to try and remember which name goes with which face, you know?"
"Oh, totally, I know exactly what you mean! We meet so many people, like doing shows in other towns and stuff, and everyone expects you to remember them, just because you've met them once! It can be frustrating sometimes, but I'm not complaining. I love fans, you know? They're the reason we get to keep playing." He paused, swallowing slightly. "But your name's really unusual." he paused again, looking up at her. "I'm sure I won't have any trouble remembering it." He beamed a soft smile at her, showing off even white teeth.
She smiled back at him. He seemed really nice. And his eyes were such a nice hazel colour. She turned her head a bit to the side, unconsciously looking to see what Marina and Gerard were doing. He was still sitting on the couch, deep in conversation with Marina and Mikey. But his eyes were on her. Uncomfortable under his scrutiny, Luca turned back and continued talking to Frank.
They had just started talking about Luca's drive down when Gerard came right up behind her. "Hey, you guys ready to go?" She turned around to see that the while she had been talking to Frank, the room had emptied out considerably, and now Luca, Marina, and Gerard's band were all that remained.
"Oh!" Luca exclaimed, a little embarassed at how she had lost track of time while they had been chatting. "Yeah, sure!" she said and started walking towards the door, waiting until Marina caught up with her.
"So," Marina started under her breath, grabbing onto Luca's arm, "you and Frank seemed pretty cozy......" she winked.
"Oh, come on Mina! I just met the guy! But he seems real nice, easy to talk to."
"Right, and not at all attractive..."
Luca's face turned bright red. "I didn't say that he wasn't cute, i just don't really know him yet." and Gerard is more my type...NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!
"Uh-huh." Marina laughed and lead her out the door behind the rest of the guys.
Halfway to the car, Luca finally thought the ask, "Where are we going anyway?"
Gerard, up ahead of them, turned around and stopped, waiting for her and Marina to catch up. "We're going to my house-" Frank coughed loudly. "-well, the band house. We figured since it was your first show, you need to be initiated into the group, so we're having a little shindig. Not even a shindig really, mostly just you, Marina, me and the guys."
"But we've got cable!" Frank called as he ducked into the rear driver seat.
"Oh, well, then it really IS a party!" Luca laughed as she got into the rear passenger seat behind Marina.
