Chapter Two
Emmy walked in through the cottage door and sighed as she tiredly hung up her jacket on the hooks near the front door. Checking her watch she saw that she had little over an hour before Kian would pick her up again. Pulling her hair free from her ponytail she began to head to the bathroom for a much needed hot shower.
“Emmy is that you?”
Smiling at the sound of her grandmother’s voice, Emmy changed her direction and followed it into the small living room. “Yea Grandma, it’s me.” She smiled at the elderly woman that sat in a worn rocking chair.
Looking up from her knitting, Moira Riley smiled warmly at her granddaughter. “Did you just get off from the pub? I have dinner started. You’re uncle will be home from work soon. Your cousin, Bridget, is over at a mate’s house. Aunt Maggie took the other four to have dinner at her mum’s house tonight.”
As Emmy came to sit on the couch, she gave her grandmother a mysterious smile. “Actually I’m going out for dinner.”
Moira’s eyes raised up in surprise. “You have a date, already? You’ve only been in town two days.”
“Sort of.” Emmy couldn’t hold back the laughter.
“What’s this sort of business? Just where are you goin’ young lady?” Moira put down her knitting. She peered at her granddaughter over a pair of old wire rim glasses.
“I’m going over to the Egan’s for dinner.”
Moira’s eyes lit up as she cackled softly as she clapped her hands together. “The Egans? You mean…Don’t tell me you ran into Kian Egan? Wee Kian Egan?”
Emmy giggled. “Trust me Gran, he’s not so wee any more. But yea I did. He and his friends were in the pub today. It was so surreal Grandma. Here I was taking their orders and out of the blue we found each other.”
“That is wonderful, Emmy, just wonderful.” Moira laid her hands in her lap. “Kian was always a nice young lad. Your mum really liked him. She used to say that she never had to worry about ya when he was around. If only your father would have felt the same.” She sighed as she made a quick sign of the cross in memory.
“It still doesn’t seem real.” Emmy swallowed hard as she thought of her mother. “I never thought I’d see him again. I can’t believe he still lives here. I would have thought he would have gone on to college or moved away or something.”
“He’s rarely home these days. That poor lad leads a very busy life.” Moira shook her head as she began to knit again.
Emmy cocked her head. “What do you mean, Grandma?”
“Well you know, with his hectic schedule with Wes-“ Moira looked up at her granddaughter only to see a blank look of ignorance on Emmy’s face. Then it hit her. Emmy didn’t know. With all those years in New York, Emmy wouldn’t know.
“Why does Kian have such a busy schedule?” Emmy had a puzzled look on her face.
“I’m sure he’ll tell you all in good time.” Moira smiled at her as she picked up her knitting needles and began to work again.
“What is so secretive about what Kian does?” Emmy threw her hands up. “It’s not like he’s a serial killer or anything.”
“What a man does for work defines the kind of man he is. You’re granddad always said that.” Moira answered cryptically.
Shaking her head, Emmy stood up. “I need to go get ready. Kian is going to be here soon.”
“I hope you have a good time, Emmy. I’m so happy for you.” Moira kissed her granddaughter’s cheek as Emmy bent down.
“Thanks Grandma. If Kian comes just tell him I’m in the shower.” Emmy called out as she headed towards the bathroom.
Moira shook her head as she knitted away. Emmy was in for a surprise.

Kian practically raced up the stone walkway to the Riley cottage. It had only been an hour since he had seen Emmy but it felt like a week. As he looked around, he couldn’t help but smile. It had been a long long time since he had been here.
Emmy had sneaked him in a couple of times to meet her grandparents and her mother. The last time Emmy’s father had caught them. Kian was shown the door and he could hear her getting yelled at for having Kian over. Her father felt as if Kian was below Emmy and had no business being with his daughter. Her mother felt very different and encouraged the young friends to meet often.
Reaching out with his finger, Kian rang the doorbell. After several long seconds the door opened. In the doorway stood Moira Riley, Emmy’s grandmother. Instantly Kian’s eyes lit up as he smiled at the elderly woman. “Good Evenin’ Mrs. Riley.”
“Well Kian Egan, my you have grown up lad.” Moira chuckled as she stared at the very handsome young man standing before her. She adjusted her glasses as she beamed at him.
“Some folks would say otherwise.” Kian smirked.
“I’m sure they would.” Moira motioned for him to come in. “Emmy is almost ready.”
“And how do ya know I didn’t come to see you?” Kian winked at Moira.
Patting him on the arm Moira chuckled. “You haven’t changed a bit, Kian.” She smiled as Kian followed her into the cottage.
“Emmy’s changed so much.” Kian sighed as he walked in. “She’s no longer the little lass who used to tag after me.”
“It’s been a long time, Kian. Unfortunately she has had too much of her father’s influence bearin’ down on her.” Moira shook her head. “Poor child.”
“What’s she really doin’ in Sligo? Why did she come home after all these years?” Kian knew that Emmy couldn’t have been telling him the full truth earlier.
“Why haven’t you told her about Westlife?” Moira asked instead.
Kian looked up at the old woman in surprise and then sighed. “I know I should’ve today. I would have. She’s gonna find out sooner or later.” He ran a ragged hand through his hair. “It’s hard to explain. Comin’ home to Sligo helps me feel a bit normal. Seein’ Emmy today made me feel like that fourteen-year-old that she knew all over again. To her I’m just good old Kian, before Westlife and all the craziness. It’s not that I don’t love what I do, cause God knows I do. It’s just that I don’t wanna drag her into all of this if she’s not ready. I mean it’s hard enough on us lads, not to mention our families and our friends.”
“I think you’ll have a lot to learn about the grown up Emmy.” Moira patted his shoulder.
“What has Kian got to learn about me?” Emmy caught the last part of what her grandmother said as she came down the stairs.
Kian raised his eyes and his heart started to race as he watched Emmy walk towards him. She had changed from her grubby jeans and work shirt. She now wore a black mini skirt that showed off a pair of perfectly tanned legs. A short sleeved button down blouse of sage green accompanied the skirt, topping it off with a pair of black sandals. Her hair was loose around her face, framing it in honey waves. “You clean up good there, Emmy.” He teased.
Emmy smiled as she walked towards her grandmother and Kian. “I don’t want your family to think that you picked up some waif on the side of the road.”
“Nah, I’m just bringin’ ya home.” Kian laughed as he ducked away as Emmy’s fist came plowing into his arm. “OWW!” He pouted as he rubbed his arm. “That hurt. Who in the hell taught ya how to hit like that?”
Emmy smirked as she crossed her arms over her chest. “You did, remember? It was after Tommy O’Hearn knocked me down. You said I needed to learn how to protect myself.”
“Of all the times you chose to listen to me.” Kian grumbled as he rubbed his arm.
Moira smiled at the two young people before her. It was as if the nine year separation never existed. They were joking and carrying on as if nothing had changed at all. “You two go have fun, and I’ll see you later Emmy.”
“I’ll take good care of her.” Kian smiled sweetly at Moira.
“Thank you Kian. Goodnight you two.” Moira gave him a little wave as she walked into the living room.
Taking Emmy’s hand in his own, Kian smiled at her. “Ready?”
“No, but since you won’t listen anyway.” Emmy grinned.
“Nope I won’t. Come on, Mum is gonna be surprised.” Kian pulled her towards the door.
“What about Jodi?” Emmy couldn’t help but worry.
“What about her? She is at the house waitin’ for us. I told her that I was comin’ to pick ya up.” Kian led her out to his BMW.
“How long have you two been together.” Emmy couldn’t help but ask as she walked with Kian.
“For a bit.” Kian replied hesitantly. “Jodi is a great lass. She’s very sweet and carin’.” For some reason it felt strange to be talking to Emmy about his girlfriend. He didn’t know why, but it just did.
“That’s great Kian. I’m glad you’re happy.” Emmy grinned at him as Kian opened her door for her.
“Now we just need to get you someone.” Kian teased as he held the door open.
“Don’t go holding your breath.” Emmy got in the car and Kian shut the door.
Getting in the driver’s seat, Kian started the car. “There ya go doubtin’ yourself again, Little One. You need to stop doin’ that. You just need some confidence.”
“Just where am I gonna get that from?” Emmy turned to look at him.
Kian began grinning from ear to ear as he leaned over and kissed her cheek. “Leave that to me.”
* * * * * *
Emmy was a bundle of nerves as she and Kian walked up to the front of a large white house. This wasn’t the same house that she remembered visiting in the past. “You moved?” She turned to look at Kian.
“Yea, the old house was getting' too small.” Kian winced as he lied to her. What’s the big deal, he asked himself. After all it wasn’t like Emmy didn’t know that Kian loved music. She was there when his parents bought him his first guitar. But he wasn’t sure how she would react to knowing that her old mate was one of the most wanted men in the UK. Once the press caught wind of it there would sure to be talk.
“Just how many of you are still living at home?” Emmy teased as Kian opened the front door for her. She knew that Kian came from a large family. With three brothers and three sisters Kian was used to being part of a crowd, while Emmy was an only child.
“Enough to drive Mum daft.” Kian laughed as he led her into the foyer.
“Why am I not surprised?” Emmy couldn’t help but look all around. This was much bigger than Kian’s old house. She suddenly went quiet as they turned to head into a vast living room.
“Mum! We’re home.” Kian called out as he dragged Emmy behind him.
Patricia Egan was talking to Jodi on the couch when she turned her head to acknowledge her son. But she wasn’t prepared for the person standing next to Kian. There was a very lovely young woman on his arm and they looked very close. She watched as Kian lowered his head and whispered something into the young woman’s ear as he smirked. Her head went from the young woman to Jodi and back again. Just what was her son up to?
“Mum, you remember Emmy McAllistair?” Kian asked nonchalantly.
“No, I don’t think I-“ Patricia started to say until she stopped dead in the middle of what she was saying. “Emmy?” Her voice came out as a surprised squeak. “Wee Emma McAllistair?”
“Hello Mrs. Egan.” Emmy gave the older woman a warm smile.
Patricia stood up immediately and practically ran over to her son and his guest. Wrapping her arms around Emmy she rocked the young woman. “Darlin’ it’s so good to see you. It’s been so long.” She pulled back to smile brightly at Emmy.
“Nine long years or so Kian keeps reminding me.” Emmy laughed as she hugged the older woman back.
“Lord Kian why didn’t you tell me that Emmy was our special guest?” Patricia pushed lightly on her son’s chest.
“I wanted ya to be surprised.” Kian kissed his mother’s cheek.
“It’s good to see you, Emmy.” Patricia beamed at her. “How long are you in Sligo this time?”
“Permanently I hope.” Emma told her. “I’m living with Grandma and my family.”
“Well that’s great, isn’t it Kian.” Jodi walked up slowly to Kian as she wrapped her arms around his waist, laying her head on his chest. The smile on her face said that she was happy but the look in her eyes told a different story.
Kian hugged Jodi and kissed her softly. “I think it is. I get me girlfriend and me best friend all in one vacation.”
Just then the doorbell rang and Patricia looked down into the foyer. “Do you have any more guests comin’ for dinner that I don’t know about, Kian?” She asked as she began to walk into the foyer.
“Not that I know of Mum.” Kian shook his head as he held Jodi close to him.
A few seconds later Patricia came walking back into the room followed by Mark, Shane, Nicky and Bryan. “Well look who I found on my doorstep.” There was a twinkle in her eyes.
Kian groaned as he watched his bandmates stroll on in as if they owned the world. “What the hell are ya lads doin’ here?”
“Emmy, love!” Mark called out as he walked over to Emmy and gathered her up in a huge hug. He laughed as he lifted her off her feet.
Emmy laughed as she hugged Mark back. “Hey Mark.”
“Did ya miss me love?” Mark winked at her as he set her down.
“Oh of course. I mean all day without seeing you is just too long.” Emmy nodded with a deadpan expression on her face.
Mark grinned as he wrapped an arm around her waist. “See Bryan, I told ya she was a beauty.”
Kian frowned and looked hard at Mark. What in the fuck was Mark doing? The last thing Emmy needed was Mark hitting on her. He would have to have a little talk with his bandmate later. A very long talk.
Bryan moved past Nicky to step forward and took Emmy’s hand in his own. Bringing her hand up to his mouth, he lightly kissed her knuckles. “Bryan McFadden, a pleasure to meet ya Emmy.” He gave her an unabashed cocky grin.
“Nice to meet you Bryan.” Emmy fought a giggle.
“Quit hittin’ on her. She’s not interested.” There was a stern warning in Kian’s voice.
Five pairs of eyes lifted to look up at Kian, as his friends and Emmy stared at him in surprise. “How in the hell do ya know that?” Bryan argued. “She could be.” He frowned at a very pissed off Kian.
“You’re married!” Kian pointed out angrily.
“Kian Egan, I can’t believe ya think I have anythin’ other than friendly thoughts towards Emmy here.” Bryan had a look of mock shock on his face while laughter flooded his sparkling blue eyes. “Besides, ya have Jodi so just what kinda things are ya thinkin’?” He raises his eyebrows up and down.
Shane, Mark and Nicky snickered as Kian glared angrily at Bryan. He knew his mates thought this was just too funny. However he did not.
“Ignore those two, they love to fight.” Shane drawled as he walked over to Emmy. “How ya doin’, love?” He gave her a hug.
“I’m doing good, Shane. Nice to see you again.” Emmy looked over Shane’s shoulder. “I think you’re forgetting someone.”
Shane chuckled as he turned around. “That is Nicky Byrne. He’s another one of us. Just like Bryan, he’s a Dublin lad.”
Nicky pushed Shane out of the way as he kissed Emmy’s cheek. “Nice to meet ya Emmy. There’s nothin’ wrong with Dublin, don’t let the Sligo lads get to ya. Dublin lads do it better.”
“Fuc-“ Bryan started but then he saw the look Patricia was giving him. “Darn right they do.” He smiled sweetly at Patricia and Emmy.
Kian watched with tight pursed lips as his mates surrounded Emmy. For some reason he didn’t like that they seemed to be hanging around too close to Emmy. Not that the lads were bad boys or anything. But when he pictured the man that Emmy should be with, none of the Westlife lads came to mind. No one was good enough for her.
“I take it you lads are stayin’ for dinner?” Patricia looked at each of the boys with a wry grin on her face.
“Like we would miss one of your dinners.” Bryan kissed her cheek.
“Who invited ya?” Kian threw out.
“Kian Egan! I swear where are your manners?” Patricia turned to give her son a dirty look. “There is plenty of food for everyone.”
“I don’t think it’s the food he wants to be sharin’.” Nicky whispered to Shane. Shane turned his head as he began to snicker.
Jodi glared up at Kian but he didn’t notice. She didn’t like how the lads seemed to take Emmy in as if she were one of their own. It should be she who Kian was protective of, not Emmy.
“I’m hungry.” Bryan rubbed his stomach.
“You’re always hungry.” Kian grumbled.
“Well food is on the table, plenty for everyone.” Patricia began to usher the crowd into the dining room. “Kevin is waitin’ for us with the others. Lord he’s gonna be so surprised to see you, Emmy.” She smiled at the young woman.
Kian followed his mother with Jodi on his arm. As he looked back he found that Emmy was laughing at something Mark was saying to her. He stopped dead in his tracks as he frowned once again. What in the fuck was he saying to her?
“Kian, come on.” Jodi put her hands on each side of his head and kissed him. “Dinner is waiting.”
Drawn out of his thought about Emmy, Kian looked down at his girlfriend and smiled. “Thank ya baby.”
Surprised Jodi stared at him. “For what?”
“For understandin’ about Emmy. I know it isn’t easy.” Kian caressed her face.
“I just want you to be happy Kian, and I want to be the woman who makes you happy.” Jodi hugged him. She was his girlfriend, nobody else. She was the woman who Kian would turn to when things went wrong. If she had her way she would be the wife who Kian came home to after the tour was done.
“I’m happy baby.” Kian gave her half a smile as he started to walk. But looking back at Emmy surrounded by the lads, his stomach dropped. He was happy, wasn’t he?
* * * * * *
Kian laid in the darkness staring up at the ceiling. Jodi faced away from him, fast asleep. Even though they went to bed hours ago, he just couldn’t sleep tonight. His mind was unsettled as he went over the night’s events in his head.
Dinner had been a chaotic event. He had wanted to sit next to Emmy but his so called mates made sure that wasn’t to be. Emmy was crowded between Mark and Bryan and they kept her quite busy all night. Shane and Nicky kept the conversation up and made sure that she wasn’t bored. With Mark and Shane knowing that Emmy still wasn’t aware of what they did, they thankfully drew the conversation away from any mention of Westlife.
With a rustling of sheets Jodi turned over and reached for Kian in the darkness. “Kian, is everything ok?” She moved closer to him as she laid her head on his bare chest. Her fingers teasingly ran up and down over the broad expanse of muscle.
Hugging her close to him, Kian kissed the top of her head. “Yea baby, everythin’ is fine. I guess I’m not as tired as I thought I’d be.”
“You should get some sleep. You only have this week and then you have to get back to work. Better enjoy it while it lasts.” Jodi softly chastised him as she began to nibble on his chin.
“I know baby.” Kian’s voice was flat as he pulled her up to kiss her deeply. In the past Jodi had always had the power to make him forget and feel better. But tonight for some reason that wasn’t the case.
Instantly Jodi could detect a change in him. The kiss he gave her was not one of a man who seemed interested. Reaching up she pushed Kian back onto the bed as she moved her body over him. “Maybe sleep is the last thing we need.” There was a huskiness to her voice.
Knowing exactly what she meant, Kian pulled her head down and kissed her passionately. His tongue slipped between her lips as he almost brutally conquered her mouth. He needed this distraction badly. Moaning as he felt her hands run all over him, he tried to concentrate on what she was doing. He had to keep Emmy from entering his thoughts tonight. But it was much easier said than done.
