June 20th 2004. Camden, London.
Kim was having one of those days that made her sometimes wish she had a normal life with a 9 to 5 job. It wasn’t that Kim didn’t love her career and wasn’t grateful for every bit of success she earned, but when she was away from London she missed her old friends terribly. On this day Kim was spending some much needed quality time with her best friend, Rosie. Kim and Rosie had known each other since stage school when they where in their early teens, they where the only two girls out of the whole group who had gone on to forge successful acting careers on the big screen; most of the others had either lost interest or gained success in other ventures such as music or in most cases, theatre.
As they chatted and shopped, both where approached more than a dozen times for their pictures and autographs which didn’t bother either of them at all. They stood and chatted and even asked for the opinions of fans on the clothes they where looking at. One girl in particular ran back to her group of friends shouting ‘oh my god can you believe Kim Appleton just asked me if that top suited her! Oh my god she’s so nice!’ to which Kim and Rosie laughed, the cockles of their hearts warmed by the young girls’ excitement.
Even though both girls earned enough money to shop at none other but top designer stores if they wanted to, they enjoyed coming to Camden to see what treasures they could find. It had been a little ritual since they had been teens; every Saturday they had gone shopping to Camden, and whenever they where both back in London at the same time and didn’t have work commitments they made sure the old routine was whipped into life again.
When the girls where so heavily laden with shopping bags that they couldn’t carry much more they decided to stop and have a coffee at a quiet café they where about to reach.
‘Latte with two sugars?’ Asked Rosie as Kim tucked her bags under the table and sat down.
‘Yes please sweetie, and a brownie too, ill pay for the lot, have whatever you want’ said Kim, taking a crisp £20 note out of her purse and giving it to Rosie.
‘Okay then thanks, ill be back in a bit’ said Rosie after she had also put her bags with Kim’s under the small round metal table.
As Kim sat and waited she was asked politely by a few more fans for her autograph, but otherwise left alone to her thoughts.
She sat and took in the scenery around her; market stall traders shouting out the latest bargains, bike couriers risking life and limb to deliver whatever small parcel they had in their backpack fighting their way through the traffic, punks communing over on Camden lock drinking cans of beer, and the occasional passing member of her majesty’s constabulary, alert as always.
Kim sat and took it all in, then found her attention was pulled to a banner ad on the side of one of the classic red London busses. It was a huge advert for The Phantom of the Opera, Gerry’s latest film about to hit the big screens in little over 3 week’s time.
Seeing this advert made Kim’s stomach do a merry little somersault, she couldn’t wait to see Gerry again when they began to shoot their new film ‘Professional Lies’. She knew he was heading back to London after having to do some promotional work for his other recently released film ‘Dear Frankie’ in Los Angeles and his arrival was imminent. He had told her that he would call as soon as he was back. Kim had been checking her phone every five minutes just in case she missed his call, to which she got the usual teasing from Lucy, Rosie or anyone else that liked to wind her up over her friendship with Gerry. She was checking her phone once more as Rosie arrived back at their table.
‘You can’t will it to ring just by looking at it you know girl’ said Rosie with a smile as she placed Kim’s latte and brownie down in front of her with the change from her £20.
‘Ha ha, you’re a comedian now are you?’ said Kim jokingly as Rosie took her seat opposite.
‘No, but I have noticed you have been looking at that damn thing every bloody few minutes, don’t worry, he will call when he’s here!’ said Rosie as she watched Kim pull a face and return her phone to her pocket.
‘I really do wish you would just ask him out you know, and before you say that age old line about not fancying him, don’t bother. I know you Kim, and I know you want him’ said Rosie, blowing her coffee and gingerly taking a sip of the scalding hot beverage.
‘Well what if I do?’ Kim began. ‘It’s not like he’s interested in me is it? And we have known each other for too long now to be anything more than friends, it would be weird’.
‘Weird?’ ‘WEIRD?’ Rosie repeated, ‘I can think of more words than weird to describe getting my hands on Gerry Butler sweetheart and let me tell you weird isn’t one of them! She laughed.
‘Rosie! You are such a tart!’ laughed Kim, trying to sound shocked.
‘Yes I am, but he is one damn fine looking man, I mean those eyes, that rock solid muscular body, that accent! If you don’t go for him I bloody well will! Said Rosie, noticing that in spite of herself, Kim’s face had turned a little sour. ‘See, if you only thought of him as a friend then you wouldn’t be pulling that kind of face at what I just said, which was to deliberately wind you up you know’ Rosie finished, lighting a cigarette and giving Kim a knowing look.
‘Rosie, is this a chat over coffee or just another attempt of yours to analyse me and what I want? Said Kim seriously.
‘Oh Kim! Don’t get all defensive, I’m only having a laugh with you! Said Rosie, a little taken back.
‘Well I wish everyone wouldn’t constantly have ‘a laugh’ with me at one of my friends’ expense. For the last fucking time, there is nothing between Gerry and I, we are just friends and that is the way I want it to stay’ said Kim angrily, with an air of finality on the subject.
‘Ill take that as my queue to shut my big mouth then? Asked Rosie.
‘Please do’ said Kim.
Rosie felt a little defeated as she sat back and silently watched Kim. She knew denial when she saw it. Rosie couldn’t figure out for the life of her why Kim wouldn’t at least admit to her, her alleged best friend that Gerry was the one she wanted to be with. Rosie had seen them together on a few occasions and was always secretly hoping they would become a couple. They looked great together. They looked like if they where a couple, they would be the couple everyone else wanted to be. But if Kim was adamant that they would permanently just be friends then there wasn’t a lot she could do about it, except maybe pull Gerry to one side and have a few words with him. She thought on this and decided not to, she didn’t want to poke her nose in and had a feeling she had already prickled Kim’s temper enough already.
It was then, while she and Rosie sat silently at their table that Kim realized she couldn’t lie to herself or her friends anymore. Gerry meant more to her than just a friend. And lord did she fancy him, so much so that his very presence made her knees weak. She knew it was now or never to confess.
‘Look I’m sorry, it’s just that, um, I, errrm, oh I don’t know Rosie’ Kim started, ‘You know I’ve been hurt before, I don’t want to get my fingers burnt again or upset the balance, if you, erm, um, know what I mean’ she finished uncomfortably and without being able to meet Rosie’s eyes over the steam coming from their coffee’s.
‘So, was all than um-ing and errrm-ing you finally admitting to the fact you like him? Asked Rosie softly, taking hold of Kim’s hand.
‘Yes’ whispered Kim after a long pause. ‘Yes I like him more than a friend’.
‘Halleluiah, she finally admits it!’ Rosie shouted out loud.
‘Keep your fucking voice down! Walls have ears! Hissed Kim.
‘In case you didn’t notice, we are outside. No walls around to have ears’ laughed Rosie, making Kim laugh too.
‘Oh you know what I mean’ Kim said as she squeezed Rosie’s hand.
‘So what are you going to do then, you going to tell him?’ asked Rosie.
‘Oh please! I’ve only just admitted it out loud, give me a bit of time’ said Kim.
‘Not another four bloody years I hope! Rosie chuckled as Kim’s eyebrows rose so high they nearly disappeared into her hair.
‘To be honest I don’t know if ill say anything at all, I can fancy him from afar. And I don’t know what kind of can of worms I’m going to be opening if I do tell him. I mean what if it totally wrecks our friendship, the very reason I’ve been giving to you all for ages’ Kim said, feeling herself start to obsess again.
‘Look, you are right. You have just taken a pretty big step by actually admitting it, so just take your time. See how things are when you are working together; maybe engage in some harmless flirting?’ Rosie said.
‘We already playfully flirt with each other though, so that wouldn’t make a difference. Ill work it out, don’t worry’ Kim said to Rosie, who was draining the remaining dregs of coffee from her cup.
‘I’m glad to hear it, now, eat your brownie or ill pinch it! Rosie giggled she reached out to grab the brownie only to have Kim playfully slap her hand away and then break it in half so they had a piece each.
After Rosie had departed, Kim stayed at the café for one last coffee and then decided to head home. She walked back down to the busier end of Camden and hailed a cab on the corner of the road. Now she was famous she always found a cab quickly, every London cabbie liked to transport a film star. The driver pulled over to where she was waiting and quickly got out to open the boot and help her pile in her shopping bags.
Once she had got comfy inside and given the driver her address Kim sat back and felt a relief wash over her. Not just the nice relief she always got when she found a cab and was on the way home from a successful shopping venture, but the relief of finally admitting the way she felt about Gerry. It was like a big weight had been lifted off her shoulders by finally telling someone the one thought she had been pushing to the back of her mind for so long.
‘Excuse me mate, can you pull over just outside Lotus Flower on the right, I want to see if I can get a bargain in there before I go home’ said Kim, reaching forward and tapping the partition at the front of the cab to alert the drivers attention.
‘Ok m’love, want me to wait outside for you?’ asked the cabbie as he pulled over outside Lotus Flower, the boutique around the corner from Kim’s flat.
‘No it’s okay, ill walk from here, it isn’t far’ said Kim as she fished around in her bag for her purse to pay the fare.
Once Kim was out and had all her bags arranged she agreed to sign a quick autograph for the cabbie, gave him his fare plus a tip and went inside Lotus Flower. She looked up and down the rails for a new dress to wear to the premier of her new film in Paris four weekends from now, but couldn’t see anything of interest until she spotted a long backless lilac dress on one of the rails. Putting down her bags she pulled it out and began to study it when her phone rang. The name displayed on the caller I.D was the one she’d been waiting for.
‘Hello mate’ she said warmly with a smile as she answered.
‘That colour doesn’t suit you’ Gerry said at once.
‘What the….?’ Kim began, turning around quickly to see where he was. No sign. ‘Where are you that you can see what colour dress I’m holding up?’
‘Put the dress back and count across five to your left, then pick out the fifth one’ said Gerry, not satisfying Kim with an answer to his whereabouts.
‘Alright’ said Kim, feeling a little puzzled as she began to count back across the rail of dresses, finally reaching a silvery coloured dress. ‘Is this the one?’ she asked after she had pulled it out and waved it around gently in all directions, still not knowing where he was.
‘Yes that’s it, now stop waving it about and go and try it on’ said Gerry, trying not to laugh at the extremely puzzled look on Kim’s face.
‘Gerry this is silly, just tell me where you…….’
‘Behind you’ he whispered, his warm breath making contact with her flesh made all the tiny hairs on Kim’s neck stand up.
‘Since when have you been one for playing hide and seek then? Said Kim when she had turned to face him, and had to stop her jaw from dropping. He looked more beautiful than ever. He had let his hair grow to around the similar length it was when she had first met him, maybe a little longer, and was dressed in a half done up blue and white striped shirt which showed off his more than noticeable muscular chest and a battered up old pair of jeans.
‘I saw you from outside and couldn’t resist the temptation for a bit of fun. I’ve been hiding outside behind the window display’ Gerry said as he shrugged and smiled. ‘So are you going to try it on then?’
‘Maybe, I don’t know. Anyway I don’t mean to sound rude but what are you doing in my neighbourhood?’ Kim asked.
‘I decided to give you a personal visit, but obviously you aren’t at home. It’s lucky that I passed here really or I could have missed you’ Gerry said with a bright smile, making two cute dimples appear in his cheeks.
‘Well I only decided at the last minute I’d stop off here for a mooch around so looks like we couldn’t have timed it better!’ replied Kim. ‘I think I will go and try this on, would you be so kind as to watch over this lot while I’m otherwise engaged? Said Kim as she gestured down to where her many bags lay.
‘Sure thing’ replied Gerry.
After Kim had tried the dress on and decided to buy it, she and Gerry decided to go to the small bar and bistro situated opposite Kim’s flat for a bite to eat. While Kim quickly nipped back in her flat to drop off her shopping Gerry ordered their drinks, a coke for himself and a glass of chardonnay for Kim. When Kim arrived back she found Gerry with his head stuck in the menu.
‘I’m afraid I can’t recommend anything unless it’s from the vegetarian menu’ said Kim as she sat down. ‘Oooh thanks for getting this’ she continued as she picked up her glass of wine and took a sip.
‘That’s ok, I’ve decided already’ said Gerry as he snapped the menu shut and placed it back on the table, ‘I don’t take half an hour to make up my bloody mind like some people I know’ he said, giving Kim a knowing look.
‘Just because I like to make sure I’ve made the right choice doesn’t give you the right to criticise me!’ Kim snorted, reaching forward and playfully smacking him on the arm with her menu.
‘Assault! Assault! This woman is violent! Shouted Gerry as he pointed at Kim, making the other diners turn around to see what all the fuss was about to which both Gerry and Kim fell about laughing.
‘Oh just shut up and let me decide what I’m eating, or ill take another half an hour’ said Kim once her laughing fit had subsided.
When they had finished their meals and sat and chatted for a while longer, Kim invited Gerry back to her flat.
‘Wow it looks great since it’s been decorated’ said Gerry as he stepped through the door.
‘I have Gus to thank for that, he came in and repainted the lot while I was on location in China’ said Kim as she hung up her coat on the old iron hanger behind her front door and pulled off her boots. ‘It’s a damn side better than battleship grey’ she continued as they made their way into Kim’s lounge and slumped down on her huge black leather sofa. Gus was Kim’s 19 year old brother who was a lot handier with a paint roller than Kim could ever hope to be. All Kim had successfully managed to make with paint was a mess; she definitely didn’t have an artistic streak in her.
‘So how was China then?’ asked Gerry.
‘I had a great time, the locations where beautiful but we all suffered in the heat with those big heavy costumes on! I thought I was going to pass out after one particular battle scene’ laughed Kim as she remembered stumbling around and being caught by one of her co stars, saving her from hitting the floor with exhaustion and over heating. She had just finished filming a fantasy adventure film where she played a barbaric warrior and thus had to wear some very interesting looking and very heavy costumes.
‘I bet you had fun doing all the fight training’ said Gerry with a knowing smile, he knew Kim loved doing a lot of her own stunts and that she really got into all of her fighting roles with so much enthusiasm that sometimes her co stars would come off rather worse for wear.
‘Yes it was great! Said Kim with mirth before telling Gerry all about the things she had done for her training to play the part, of which included horse riding, sword fighting, Thai boxing, and other martial arts.
Gerry sat back and listened to Kim intently. He couldn’t think of a single other person in his life who could hold his interest so much when they talked, she made everything she said seem like the most fascinating thing on the earth, even if she was just talking about something quite trivial. He also found that when he spoke to her, she listened in the same intent manner; her eyes never leaving his, her face alight with interest at his words and thoughts. He felt there where too few people who actually listened like Kim did, everyone else just seemed to wait for their turn to speak.
‘So how are things going with that drummer guy then?’ asked Gerry as Kim reappeared from the kitchen with a coffee for him and a mug of tea for herself.
‘Crashed and burned’ Kim said plainly as she looked down into her mug of tea. Kim had been dating a drummer from an American rock band for a couple of months, but due to work commitments their brief union had ended, although Zach, the guy in question had stated it was because he ‘couldn’t deal with being with someone more famous than him’.
‘What a fucking asshole!’ exclaimed Gerry when Kim told him the story of being dumped over the phone by Zach while she was away in China. ‘I don’t really care, he wasn’t right for me anyway’ said Kim.
‘He doesn’t deserve you babe, I can’t think of many people who do’ said Gerry, reaching out and giving her arm a friendly squeeze.
‘He’d have to be someone pretty special’ said Kim, ‘someone just like you’ she mentally added.
‘He’d need to be, you’re a special girl, at least to me you are’ said Gerry as he pulled Kim towards him and enveloped her in one of his near bone crushing hugs. Kim sighed and rested her head on his shoulder, feeling his arms around her offered her the kind of security she felt she would never find in anyone else. Or want to. As she sat being cuddled she lazily picked at a bit of cotton on one the button holes of Gerry’s shirt.
‘Are you trying to undress me?’ asked Gerry with an amused tone in his voice.
‘No! I’m just playing with the loose bit of cotton on your button hole’ Kim retorted, and sat bold upright in a slightly startled manner. She then realized she had hugely overreacted to his usual playful flirting, and went red and turned her head from him. ‘Oh dear’ she thought to herself, realizing that her overreaction had been a tad extreme as the silence grew uncomfortable.
‘Ahhh, and here’s me thinking I was going to get lucky and all you where doing was tidying me up’ said Gerry eventually, trying to sound as casual as he could but not quite managing it.
‘Oh you are rude Mr. Butler’ said Kim, trying desperately to sound normal again, and take his harmless flirting with her usual good nature rather than jumping out of her skin.
After the little button hole incident things seemed to be a little strange, a certain atmosphere had grown denser between them as they sat in relative silence.
‘Well I think ill be heading home, it’s getting a bit late and I hate driving at this time and having to dodge all the drunkards wandering out into the road for a game of chicken with the cars’ said Gerry as he stood up and pulled his coat from off the arm of the sofa.
‘So I guess ill see you next Tuesday then for the fight training? Said Kim as she got up and saw him to the door.
‘Yes ill be there bright and early, not that either of us needs much more training in ass kicking what with our experience of playing badasses! Said Gerry with a smile as he moved to the side to let Kim open up her door.
‘This is true, but it will be fun to kick your ass’ said Kim, feeling glad that the air had seemed to clear a little.
Gerry smiled and shook his head before giving Kim a hug. ‘Goodnight angel’ he said to her before planting a small kiss on her forehead and departing down the hallway to the lift.
Kim watched his back as he left and then silently slid into her flat and double bolted the door. Once bolted, Kim turned and pressed her back into the door, and promptly slid down it until she made contact with the floor. ‘Did I just blow it completely?’ she thought to herself as she cringed, very much aware of the fact that she had jumped out of her skin unnecessarily at Gerry’s comment, and further to that, he had noticed. ‘Bugger, bugger, BUGGER!’ Kim cursed as she thumped her head back into the door. She knew that she would have to chill out and relax more when she was around him, but after her confession to Rosie (and if she was honest, at the same time to herself as well) she almost felt as if she didn’t know how to act around him anymore. She told herself it was the same old Gerry, nothing about him had changed, he was still the same guy who she told her awful jokes to, still the same guy who she knew she could tell anything to, except at that moment maybe not one thing, the most important thing.
After sitting on the floor for two hours, lost in her thoughts, Kim peeled herself up and made her way to bed. She lay there staring at the ceiling until 2.30am, where she eventually fell asleep. Little did she know that in a flat not 25 minutes away from hers a tall, dark haired Scottish man was still lying awake, being consumed by similar thoughts of his own.
