CHAPTER FOUR
Karen dragged herself out of bed and shuffled towards the kitchen. Her legs felt like lead and refused to move but she willed them to. She prepared a pot of coffee, a little stronger then usual, and then went to get the kids up. She turned the crank on the blinds in Ryan, her oldest child’s room first. He squeezed his eyes shut to block out the bright sunlight.
“Mom!” He whined and pulled his pillow over his face. Karen snatched the pillow away and tossed it to the other end of the room.
“Get up. You have school.” He rolled over onto his stomach and buried his face into his bed. Karen spanked his bottom.
“I’m tired!” He complained raising his head and glaring at her.
“Like I’m not?” She said heading out of his room and making her way towards the girl’s rooms. She roused them and then went back to the kitchen to pour her coffee and set out cereal bowls. She was sipping the strong, steaming coffee slowly when Ryan stumbled in. He flopped down in the chair and poured a bowl of cereal.
“You wouldn’t be so tired if you didn’t talk to your boyfriend on the phone all night.” He muttered and poured milk over his cereal. Karen was obviously shocked at his comment. Boyfriend? She talks to a guy once on the phone and now he’s her boyfriend? She had to admit, just the thought of it send tingles down her spine causing the hair on her arms to stand on end.
“For your information, Ryan, he’s not my boyfriend. He’s a nice guy and I like talking to him but he’s not my boyfriend.” Ryan shoveled spoons full of cereal into his mouth.
“Yeah, he’s your boyfriend.” He said and milk dribbled down his chin.
“You turd.” She said as first Carlie and then Kelly bounded in.
“You’re insulting Ryan already? It’s going to be a good day!” Kelly said and downed half a glass of milk. Ryan threw a piece of cereal at her and she stuck her tongue out at him.
“Knock it off you two!” Karen snapped and poured herself more coffee.
“Mom’s just in a bad mood because she talked to her new boyfriend on the phone all night.” Ryan said and grinned knowing Karen would be by to smack him any moment. Just as he expected Karen flicked the back of his head with her fingers.
“He’s not my boyfriend.” She said defensively.
“Oh, I know, right, I heard her giggling all night!” Kelly said. Ryan winked at her.
“You leave mom alone. She doesn’t have a boyfriend. She was just talking to a nice boy.” Karen smiled at her youngest child and then went over and, taking her head into her hands, smooched her on the cheek.
“Thank you Car. At least you have some sense.” Carlie smiled at her brother and sister proudly. They rolled their eyes in unison. Karen left them to get dressed for work. She hummed to herself as she chose a pair of smart blue pants and a cream lace camisole. She topped that with a floral button down blouse. She surveyed herself in the mirror. Not bad. She turned sideways and cringed. Sliding her hand down the front of her she thought that she could stand to lose a few pounds but who couldn’t? Her eyes moved from her bottom to her face. She puffed out her cheeks. Jay said she wasn’t old. So why did she feel so old? Jay … she thought and sighed. She had really enjoyed talking to him on the phone last night. Not only did he have a great personality but his voice was sexy as hell. Something stirred inside her that she hadn’t felt for a long time. There was a passion, a desire that was very intense and it began when she answered the phone and he said her name. The conversation was a long one but not boring. He was funny and made her laugh. He was also sad and struggling which brought out the mother in her. She leered at herself. She didn’t want to mother him though. Oh no … mothering definitely wasn’t involved. She stared at her own green eyes. They sparkled. She loved her eyes. They were probably her best feature. A screech from Carlie brought her out of her own self contemplation to reality. She stormed off towards the kitchen. “Why are you screaming Carlie?” She asked.
“Ryan is talking about your boyfriend again!” Carlie threw her arms around Karen and hugged her.
“Car, he’s not my … Oh forget it! Just go and get ready for school. We only have a few minutes before we have to go.” She patted Carlie’s bottom and shoved her off in the direction of her room. “You two go and get ready!” She snatched the cereal bowls off the table and began to rinse them in the sink. “My boyfriend.” She chuckled to herself. “He’s only …” She stopped and held the bowl under the running water. “Hey, he never did tell me how old he is.” She said and sighed. She turned off the water and went in search of three children who were going to be late for school and make her late for work.
For the first time in years Karen felt good. She was smiling as she drove to work, she approached her job with a whole new outlook. Yeah, it was still a challenge but she found herself smiling and giggling during the day instead of sighing. She thought about “Jay” and the sound of his voice and how he wouldn’t let her hang up the night before. She burst into a broad grin and then caught herself and moved on to answering phones. She had gotten so much work done that she was able to leave work 10 minutes before quitting time and stopped by the store and grabbed a family-sized chicken dinner and an apple pie from the deli before heading home and facing the taunting children. Yeah, the two oldest had made a point of calling several times after school was out to mention Karen’s new “boyfriend” and get a rise out of her. After a while she just giggled when they called. After a while she even started to think of the prospect of having a boyfriend and it tickled her. She carried the bags into the house and as soon as she hit the door the three kids swooped down on her, took the bags out of her hand and began pulling out the food.
“A pie!” Kelly said, eyes opened wide. “Woah, mom, want me to dial your boyfriend’s number for you?” She set the pie down on the countertop and began pulling paper plates out of the cupboard. “If we can get a pie every night …” Karen sighed, pretending to be disgusted and planted a hand on her hip.
“Let’s just eat in silence tonight, okay. How’s the homework coming along?”
“Good.” Ryan said as he helped Kelly set the table. Karen headed for her bedroom.
“I’ll be right back, I have to get changed.” She said as she headed into her bedroom and before changing, turned her computer on. She slipped out of her work clothes and into a pair of pajama pants with duckies on them and a tee shirt. She reached behind her back and unsnapped her bra. She sighed as she pulled it off and tossed it on the bed. She headed back into the kitchen where the kids had the table set and were dishing out food for themselves. She stared at them, helping each other, setting the table, dishing out food and wondered if she’d wandered into the wrong house. She grabbed Ryan and felt his forehead.
“What’s wrong, Mom?” He asked, eyes opened wide. She pushed him towards his seat and then grabbed a soda from the fridge.
“Nothing, Ry, just making sure you’re feeling okay.” She pulled the milk out and set it down on the table then cracked open her can of pop.
“I’m fine Mom. Sit down and eat, you’ll need your energy for later.” He giggled. She sighed and sat down and watched as the kids poured milk and ate.
“Hey, Mom, this is really good!” Kelly said. Karen looked at her suspiciously out of the corner of her eye and then nodded.
“Okay, what’s going on?” Karen asked setting down her fork and looking at the three innocent faces that stared back at her.
“Nothing, Mom. We’re just happy today.” Carlie said and smiled sweetly. Karen sighed and went on eating. Just then the phone rang. Ryan made to jump up and grab it and Karen grabbed his shirt and sat him back down.
“Don’t you dare!” She threatened and then walked calmly to the cordless phone and answered it. It was “Jay.” “Hi, Jay.” She said, walking down the hall towards her bedroom.
“You didn’t answer any of my emails today.” Josh said calmly.
“I was at work.” She said lightly.
“Yeah, but you’ve been home for what?” He paused. “An hour?” She smiled.
“Noooo …” She said and sat down on the chair in front of her computer. “I stopped at the store on the way home and got dinner.” She opened her email program and saw that she had 3 emails from Jay. “You sent me 3 emails?” She asked. He chuckled.
“Yeah. Was that too much?”
“You’re silly. No, I guess. It depends on what’s in them.” She opened the first one. “Karen, I truly enjoyed talking with you on the phone last night. I dreamt about you. It was weird. I couldn’t really see your face but I sure could hear your voice. You have a sweet voice. I can’t wait to talk to you again.” And it was signed simply with a “J.”
“Nothing much really. Just the ramblings on of a mad man.” She giggled.
“You are a mad man, I think.” She said and saw Carlie peeking around the corner at her. She giggled and ran away when Karen spied her. “Listen, Jay, I have to finish dinner with them. Can I call you back?”
“Oh, of course!” He said quickly. “Want me to call you?” She got up from the chair and headed into the dining room.
“I can call you.” She said. “I have your number.” There was a silence on the other end.
“You do?” Josh asked.
“Uhhh yeah, it’s called caller I.D.” She heard him smack himself.
“Oh duh! Yeah, I forgot. See what a sheltered life I lead …” He said and laughed. She laughed too. “Okay, I’ll let you go. Call me back.” He said.
“I will.” She said and hung up the phone right before the kids started making kissing noises in the background. She set the phone down hard on the table. “Knock it off and eat!” She snapped pointing at their plates with the fork she now held in her hand. They laughed and she giggled with them.
The kids were safely in their beds, Karen sat in front of her computer, the phone cradled on her shoulder and on the other end it was ringing. Josh picked it up on the second ring.
“Hi Karen.” He said happily.
“Hi Jay.” She replied just as happily.
“Did you miss me?” He teased.
“No, did you miss me?” She teased back. He sighed.
“Yes! I have no life. Have I told you that?” She heard the TV chatting away in the background.
“I think you did. But then that makes two of us, if you don’t count three obnoxious children and one shitty job.” He chuckled and then she heard the volume on the TV disappear. “What are you watching?” She asked.
“Nothing much, just news channels. I like to hear what’s going on in the world.”
“Ahhhh …” She said. “Checking out Entertainment Tonight?” He was silent.
“Okay, that’s weird, because yeah, that’s what I was watching.” She laughed out loud. “What?” He asked.
“I could hear it you goof!” She said.
“Duh again!” She laughed at him.
“I should have let you think I was psychic or something.”
“No you shouldn’t have!” He said.
“Why, are you afraid of me knowing what you’re thinking?” She asked with a teasing lilt to her voice.
“Perhaps.” Josh said and made a grunting noise.
“What are you doing?” Karen asked timidly, afraid of the answer. There was a banging noise in the background.
“Sorry, I was pulling the garbage bag out of the can and the freaking thing didn’t want to come out! I had fish for dinner and I don’t want that smell stinking up the house over night.” She sighed in relief. She heard a door squeak and then it sounded like he was moving.
“You’re taking the garbage out?” She asked and then giggled.
“Yeah. It’s not going to take itself out.” He said sarcastically.
“Oh ha-ha.” She said. She heard a door bang which she assumed was the garbage going down the chute. “Neatly disposed of?” She asked.
“Yep.” He said and then it was quiet in the background. “What did you guys have for dinner?” Karen gave up on checking her emails and shut down her computer.
“I got chicken from the store. And an apple pie!” She flopped down on her bed and lay back against the pillows.
“Ohhhh, apple pie! Yummy!” Josh said.
“Want some?” Karen asked fluffing her pillows around her head so they would hold the phone for her. Her palm was beginning to hurt from holding it so long.
“Yes, I do, it’s one of my favorites!” Josh exclaimed.
“I’ll have to make one for you some day. It’s my specialty.”
“I can’t wait. Hey, Karen, make sure you’re comfortable tonight. I wanna talk to you until dawn.” Her mouth fell open and she flopped her arms open wide, palms up on the bed.
“What?” She gasped. She heard him laughing in the background.
“I’m just kidding!” He explained. “I thought you’d react like that. Hey, I nearly fell asleep on the phone last night.”
“Yeah, I know. I’m setting a timer as we speak and when it goes of, *poof* I’m gone!” He sighed.
“Nooooo! We have so much to talk about.” He whined.
“Well get to talking, I have to get to bed earlier tonight. I was dragging today.” She lied. She was walking on clouds all day. She hadn’t felt so light in years.
“So …” He began. “How are you?”
“Jay!” She snapped. He laughed.
“I’m kidding!” He said chuckling. The two talked until Karen spied the clock as it approached midnight.
“Jay.” She said interrupting his chatter.
“The Princess Bride, it’s about the funniest movie I’ve ever seen. It has my idol Mandy Patinkin in it. He’s a fabulous singer, have you ever heard him sing?” Josh asked ignoring Karen.
“Jay.” She said again once he had gone quiet.
“Have you?” He persisted. She sighed knowing he was stalling.
“No, I haven’t. I do like Mandy though.”
“I’m going to make you watch it with me someday.”
“I will, I promise but right now …”
“Don’t say it.” Josh pleaded.
“I’m saying it.” Karen said. She didn’t want to hang up any more then he did but she needed to sleep.
“I don’t want to.” He stated plainly.
“Neither do I but I have to. Some of us have to work at regular person’s hours Jay!” She teased knowing he didn’t have to get up early to go into the studio. He sighed.
“Okay, okay. I understand. Can I call you at work?” He asked innocently. She burst into giggles.
“No! You cannot call me at work!” He laughed then too. “You are so cute!” He laughed in a deep voice.
“Well you don’t really know that do you?” He asked sounding sinister. The sound of his voice so low made the hair on her arms stand on end and tingle.
“No, Jay, really I don’t. Where’s that pic you were going to send me?”
“Ummm … I haven’t found one yet that won’t scare the daylights out of you.” He teased. “And, uhhh, where’s the one of you that you were going to send to me? Hmmmm?” She blushed even though he couldn’t see her.
“I ummm, it hasn’t been taken yet?” She said in a little girl voice.
“Well then, I’ll make a deal with you. When I get yours you will have mine within minutes.” She frowned, her eyebrows knitting together.
“Hey! Not fair. You have seen me already!” She protested.
“Oh yeah, in a picture the size of the head of a pin! Deal?” She sighed and then growled.
“I guess.” She gave in, unwillingly. That meant she would have to come up with a decent picture to send to Jay and she didn’t know where she would get one. She bit her lip nervously.
“OoooOOo …” He said. “Growl at me again.” She felt her face flush hotly.
“Jay!” She chastised swatting at the air.
“Come on, it was sexy.” He said deeply. “Come on, growl.” This time he whispered. Karen giggled until she couldn’t breathe.
“Stop!” She panted.
“No, I’m not kidding. I need to hear it again.” She felt a tingling sensation that moved from her belly down into her thighs.
“Another time.” She whispered, nervous about how she was feeling for him. She still didn’t even know how old he was. He could have been 17 for all she knew. Oh, yeah, right Karen and live in his own place with his own cell phone? She laughed at herself. You never know … “I have to get to bed.”
“I’m in bed.” Josh said softly. He was trying to lure her and she knew it. As badly as she wanted to take the bait, she needed to cool him off and she needed to cool herself off. She would need a cold shower after this. She was curious to know what he was doing in bed and bit her lip again, this time so hard it made her eyes water.
“Jay …” She said licking her lips and tasting blood. “You are a naughty boy. And as much as I would like to play with you, I really have to go to sleep.” He sighed. “I’m sorry.” She said softly.
“It’s okay, I’m just teasing you anyway. I know you have to go to sleep. We can talk tomorrow if you want to?” She breathed a sigh of relief.
“Thanks, Jay.” She said. “Now find a picture of yourself because I’m going to send you one in the next day or two.” He clicked his tongue.
“What? Day or two? How about hour or two?” He said and then laughed.
“Yeah, that ain’t gonna happen but you can sit and stare at that computer screen and wait if you want to.” He snickered.
“No thanks. I think I’ll get some rest too.”
“Okay, Jay.” Karen waited for him to respond. “Ummm …” She began.
“Yes?” He said.
“Good night?” She asked. She didn’t want to hang up but now it was almost 12:30.
“Sure, yeah. Sleep well sexy woman.” She blushed again and those tingly nerve endings made another appearance.
“Sexy my ass.” She sneered.
“Your ass is sexy?” He said perking up at that. “Send me a pic of that too.” Karen snorted as Josh laughed. “I’m guessing that’s a no.”
“And you would be right.” He sighed.
“I can’t win with you tonight, can I?” Karen glanced at the clock again and then sighed.
“Not unless you’re the first to hang up, then you’re the winner.” He laughed.
“I guess I lose.”
“Good night, Jay.” Karen said and forced herself to hang up. She hugged the phone to her chest and grinned so hard she couldn’t see through her squinted eyes. Her heart was pounding and she had the urge to scream out loud. She breathed heavily and her hands trembled. She suddenly realized she was falling in love with a man she had not only never seen but didn’t know and had only spoken to twice on the phone! She laughed at herself as she brought the cordless phone to it’s cradle and hung it up. Giggling, she made her way back to the bathroom where she brushed her teeth and washed her face before slipping between the sheets of her bed. She lay, face up, arms folded behind her head going over their hours long conversation in her head. She could almost hear his voice again, so soothing, so deep, so sexy. She sighed. Before long she glanced over at the clock on the nightstand and gasped. It was nearing 1:40! She closed her eyes but it was a long time before she fell asleep.
CHAPTER FIVE
Josh sped down the highway on his way to the studio and made a few phone calls. He felt great this morning despite more TV coverage of Jan and Jude. He was almost to the point where it didn’t bother him any more. His thoughts constantly returned to Karen and their phone relationship. He smiled as he reminisced of the night before. She had been so cute, so girlish though he knew she was 10 years his senior. She had an alluring voice and when she spoke it was soothing, intelligent, and provocative. He had been lying in bed, his clothing in a heap on the floor when she started that growling thing. His body responded to it immediately. When he begged her to do it again she just giggled like a young girl. He loved that about her. She was so humble. She was Jan’s opposite. Whatever Jan wasn’t, Karen was. Jan was a model, a flawless woman but Karen, Karen didn’t need the outer beauty that Jan possessed because she was the keeper of inner beauty. If his parents taught him anything in life it was that the beauty that’s on the inside was much more important than the beauty that was on the outside. He parked the car, locked it and went into the building. He was greeted by several people who had been waiting for him. They all went into a large conference room and sat. His assistant handed him a stack of papers and the group, headed by David Foster and Brian Avnet began to go over them.
“You have two charity events coming up, Josh. One in Canada and the other in New York. We have to begin working on that. I’d like to start planning personal appearances for the upcoming record you’re currently working on.” Brian said and flipped the first page of the report over.
“How committed am I to these events, especially the Canadian one?” Josh asked lightly, not looking for confrontation but knowing he was going to get one anyway.
“Josh, you said you’d do this months ago.” David Foster said. “Don’t tell me you’re going to try to get out of another commitment.” Josh shook his head quickly.
“No, no. I was just wondering.” He grumbled to himself. These charities that David involved himself in and then dragged Josh into drove him nuts. And now he would have to start traveling. He wondered if Karen might be able to go with him …
“Good because once I tell people you are going to be there you can’t back out on me.” David’s booming voice brought him back to the present. Josh jumped slightly and crumpled the paper he held in his hand. His assistant touched him lightly on the arm.
“You okay, Josh?” She whispered. He smiled and nodded.
“How’s the CD coming along?” Brian asked and received multiple answers. “Josh?”
“Great. I think I only have like 6 more and then I’m done recording.”
“Good, let’s move it along then. The sooner we can get it out on the shelves the sooner you can start touring again.” He felt a bolt of electricity shoot through his chest. Touring for Josh was a double edged sword. He loved to sing live but the stress of traveling could get to him. Life on the road in a tour bus was very similar to what he thought jail would be like. He sighed and outwardly he smiled but inwardly he cringed.
“Are we done?” Josh asked, anxiously. He knew they weren’t but he thought maybe if he seemed anxious to get going …
“No, next is this January issue.” Josh snapped his head up and glared at Brian. “I’m sorry, Josh. It has to be addressed.” He felt his cheeks tinge red and looked down. “She’s embarrassed herself in Australia by messing around with that actor, Jude Law.”
“Have you spoken to her?” David asked Josh. He shook his head.
“The last time I talked to her she denied everything.” David sighed and Brian shook his head in disbelief.
“Well maybe it’s not as hot and heavy as we all think it is. Perhaps the relationship could be salvaged.” Josh shook his head adamantly.
“No. Don’t even get involved in it. It’s my business and I’ve decided I’m not salvaging anything. What’s done is done. I’ve been talking to someone new anyway.” He mumbled the last part.
“Who is she? Is she a celebrity?” David asked. Josh stared down at his papers and shook his head.
“You don’t know her and she’s not a celebrity.”
“It’s not one of your fans is it?” Brian asked quickly and sternly. Josh sighed and shook his head.
“No, of course not. Why do you ask dumb things like that? That makes me mad.” Brian looked at Josh quizzically.
“That wasn’t dumb Josh, you know the rules.” Josh frowned right back at him.
“Then if you know I know the rules why even ask?” David coughed.
“That’s enough Josh. I know it seems like we’re like parents but …”
“Worse then parents.” Josh muttered.
“What is your problem today?” Brian snapped.
“My problem? How about the fact that my girlfriend is in another country sleeping with an actor and you’re worried about who I’m talking to. It’s humiliating to say the least!” He pushed the papers from in front of him and rubbed his forehead. David looked at Brian and sighed.
“Josh, we’re sorry.” He said softly, gently like a parent would to a child. “I know it’s rough.” Josh glared up at him.
“Do you?” David tightened his lips.
“Yeah, you know I do. Now I know it’s been rough on you and I’m sorry if you took it the wrong way but we have to salvage what we can and move on. You know you’re the victim and people will side with you on this one.” Josh covered his face with his hands.
“I don’t want to be a victim. I don’t want anyone’s sympathy. I want this over with.”
“Well play it cool if you can. No Grobanites.” Josh sighed.
“Enough with the Grobanites. I’ve already told you I haven’t. Don’t push it.” David headed for the door.
“The meeting’s over. Josh is being a shit. Don’t back out on me Josh or you’ll regret it.” He stated, walked out and slammed the door behind him blowing the curtains on the windows sideways. The remaining people in the room sat staring at the door incredulous. Finally Brian clapped his hands together.
“Well, okay then boys and girls. Does anyone else have anything to add?” He looked from face to face. Josh began to rip little tiny pieces of paper from the agenda and toss them up in the air.
“Josh!” Brian said loudly and Josh jumped. He looked at Brian and frowned.
“What?” He snapped.
“Stop irritating David. He’s your biggest fan you know.” Josh sighed and pulled his feet down from the chair across from him under the table.
“I know. Tell him I’m sorry.” He said, got up and left the room. He left the studio and headed towards his parent’s house. He was in search of a picture, one he could safely send to Karen. One that she couldn’t and wouldn’t recognize as Josh Groban the singer but Jay, the man she talks on the phone to. He hated lying to her. Of all the vices he had, lying wasn’t one of them. He despised liars and that was one of the reasons he was learning to loathe January. The woman he thought he would marry. He stuck a CD in the slot and turned the music up loud. The first strains of Wanna Be A Marytr by Full Devil Jacket came blasting out of the speakers. He needed something loud and distracting. He squealed into the driveway and screeched to a halt. Entering the house he found his mother in the living room on the phone. He came up beside her and kissed her cheek then went into the family room and pulled out a few picture albums. When Lindy finished her phone call she joined her son.
“Can I help you find something Joshua?” She asked sliding up behind him and peeking over his shoulder.
“Yeah, Mom. I’m looking for pictures of Brandon.” She frowned and pursed her lips.
“Well whatever for?” She went over to the shelf where the picture albums were and pulled one down.
“I was telling someone about him and how much he looked like me and I want to show them. Have anything fairly recent?” Brandon was Josh’s cousin. He was a year older then Josh, had a good job as a Los Angeles Veterinarian, and the wealthy son of Lindy’s sister. Lindy pushed an album towards Josh.
“Here’s the picture from when he graduated Veterinary school.” Josh glanced down at it. It was almost eerie how alike they were. They could have been brothers. Josh glanced at his mother and then shuddered. He didn’t even want to think about that.
“How about one where he’s NOT in a white coat, Mom?” He asked. She pulled the album back and flipped through a few more pages. She found one of Josh and Brandon playing football in the yard.
“How about this one?” She asked. He looked at it and smiled.
“Yeah, gimme that one.” He pulled the picture out of the sleeve and set it aside. “Do you have more?” He asked.
“I think the pictures from his 21st birthday party are in here somewhere …” She flipped through that album and when she didn’t find what she wanted moved on to another one. “Here they are!” She exclaimed excitedly and turned the album towards Josh so he could see. He grinned, took the album and slammed it shut. He took the one picture he’d put aside and stuck it between the pages. He bent down and kissed his mom on the top of her head.
“Thanks Mom. I’m gonna be in my room for a little bit, I have to scan these pictures.” He yelled heading off down the hall and then sprinting up the stairs to his old bedroom where he had a big computer set up with a printer/scanner/fax machine. He turned on the light and smiled. He loved his old room, it brought back so many warm, loving memories of his family. They had always been a close bunch, the Grobans, and success hadn’t changed them much. Josh turned on his computer and busied himself picking out the pictures he wanted to scan while it booted up. He lay out the pictures neatly and then when the computer and scanner were ready he scanned them and burned them onto a disc. While his computer shut down, he put the disc in a plastic box, put all the pictures back into the album where they belonged then returned them to the family room where he’d gotten them. He found Lindy in the kitchen. As soon as he walked in the tangy, tomatoey smell of spaghetti hit him in the belly. It was then he realized he hadn’t eaten since breakfast.
“Oh man, does that smell good!” He said making his way to the stove and lifting the lid off the stewing pot. The steam rolled out from under the lid and he sucked in the scent through his nostrils. Instantly he salivated. Lindy watched him, smiling.
“You’re hungry, aren’t you?” She asked. He smiled at her and nodded. “Do you want to stay for supper?” He shook his head.
“I do but I have to get home and get these pictures sent.” He grinned a cheesy, toothy grin at his mother. “Would you like to make your starving son a care package?” She smiled back at him.
“Yeah, I suppose.” She said and went about the kitchen putting noodles in a bowl and spooning some gravy over it. She cut a few pieces of Italian bread and put them in a bag for him. When she was finished she handed over a neatly wrapped dinner to go. He kissed her on the cheek again.
“Thanks Mom, you’re the best.” He said and bolted out the door.
Josh made it home in record time. After parking the car in the garage, he headed up to the condo and turned on the laptop while unwrapping the spaghetti. It was still steaming and didn’t need warming up so he stood by the counter in the kitchen and shoveled it down. By the time he was finished eating, his computer was up and ready to go. He slid the CD into the slot and then opened his email program. He typed up a letter to Karen and attached two of the pictures. One of them being the one of him and Brandon. Just then the phone rang. Every nerve in his body lit up and he leaped up off the couch and headed for the dining room table where he’d left his cell phone. He picked it up hurriedly and out of breath.
“Jay?” It was Karen. “Are you okay? You sound like you just ran up several flights of stairs to answer the phone.” He was still clutching at his chest. He’d suffered several heart attacks that day and wasn’t sure he’d live through another one.
“Yeah.” He let out a deep breath. “I’m okay, the phone scared me that’s all.” Karen laughed.
“Man, you need to get out more!” She teased. He laughed softly.
“You’re telling me!” He said and headed back to the couch where he was in the process of sending pictures of himself to her.
“So how was your day?” She asked lightly. He frowned and was tempted to tell her how shitty it was but thought better of it. Not just yet, Groban, not just yet, he told himself.
“It was okay. Could have been better.”
“How’s your boss?” Karen asked. Josh raised one eyebrow, confused.
“Which one? David? Brian?”
“No, the singer!” She said. His eyes opened wide as realization dawned on him. Shit, he mouthed silently.
“Oh him!” He said and then laughed. “He’s ticked off, he’s got a commitment in Canada next week that he doesn’t want to attend but has no choice.”
“Canada? Does that mean you have to go too?”
“Yes.” He said through gritted teeth. “I’m not happy.” She sighed.
“So no one in the band is happy to go to Canada and make music?” She said and then laughed. “Nice band.” He sighed and rubbed his forehead. He couldn’t continue this ruse much longer.
“Yeah, I know. I don’t mind but …” He trailed off.
“It’s not like you’ll miss me. You talk on your cell phone anyway. You planning on bringing it with you Einstein?” He snickered.
“What do you think?” She laughed.
“I think yes.”
“That’s why I like you, Karen, you’re so smart and quick on the uptake.”
“I know it!” She laughed. Josh leaned back against the couch and put his feet up on the cocktail table, one foot on either side of the computer.
“So, lady, where’s the pic you promised me?” He asked. He heard her gasp on the other end.
“I am working on it.” She said defensively.
“Well I hope you work on it faster because I have several of me I was going to send to you but I’m not going to until you ante up.” She sighed heavily.
“Jay! You are a mean young man.” He grinned.
“Oh you haven’t seen me mean yet. You should see what I can do with a feather duster and some rope.”
“Jay, you are a tease.” She said in a whisper. He was a tease? When she used her voice like that, soft and alluring she was even more of a tease!
“Oh no, it’s not me, it’s you!”
“Nope. Don’t argue with me or I’ll be forced to spank you when I meet you. And you most likely won’t like it! You forget, I’m a mommy.” He closed his eyes and felt a heat that spread through his body like wildfire. The more he talked to her the more he wanted her.
“You’re telling me you’re going to spank me and I’m a tease? I think not.” He said with a guttural laugh. “You really need to send me some pictures of yourself. Get on that computer of yours right now while we’re talking and find one. I know you can. Go on!” He ordered and pointed in the air at nothing. She sighed again.
“Man, you’re bossy today. Who pissed in your cornflakes?” He laughed.
“You don’t even want to know. I told you I had a crappy day, all that talk about going to Canada and all …” He rambled on and on mindlessly and minutes later he received an email from Karen. “Ohhhhh…. What’s this?” He taunted as he opened it and found there was an attachment.
“Just look at it and get it over with.” She said dryly. He clicked on the little paper clip that signaled an attachment and waited anxiously for her picture to show up. When it finally did he stared at it and smiled. She was elegant. She was charming. She was beautiful. He felt a crawling feeling that began in his belly and tingled it’s way down to his thighs. “Well?” He heard her ask. “Did I kill you because you’re awfully quiet!”
“No, Karen, you’re gorgeous!” He breathed. She clicked her tongue and sighed.
“Oh please!” She said sarcastically.
“No, I mean it.” He said defensively. He couldn’t take his eyes off her. “You’re radiant.” She laughed.
“Of all the things I’ve been called Jay, radiant is not one of them! Bitch fits me better. What do you think?” He had covered his mouth with his hand and was rubbing his thumb along his lower lip.
“No, I think the picture is great. Send me more.”
“Uhhh, no. I think you owe me something.” She said quickly. He frowned. “Jay?” She said.
“Oh yeah, I do, don’t I?” He teased then cradled the phone between his ear and his shoulder while he finished the email he’d started earlier and after attaching two pictures of Brandon, one being the one of him and Brandon, pressed send. “And there you go. Now, if anyone’s going to get sick from pictures it’s going to be you.” He said leaning back against the couch to wait for her response. He didn’t hear anything for a few minutes. Then Karen spoke.
“Which one is you?” She asked.
“I’m the one with the football. The other douchebag is my boss.”
“What’s his name again?” She asked. He smiled.
“Josh.”
“Right! Hey, you’re really cute!” He rolled his eyes.
“Ya think so?” He asked. She growled at him.
“Rowr.” He felt the little hairs on his arms stand straight up.
“Do that again.” He said, grinning. She growled at him again. He felt an awakening between his legs. “Again.” He said softly. She did. He sighed.
“Oh baby.” He moaned. She giggled. “You make me hot.” He whispered.
“Are we going to start this again tonight?” She taunted. He reached down and adjusted himself from where his jeans were pinching him.
“You want to? Because after all that growling I’m definitely in the mood.” He lay his hand on his thigh and rubbed it lightly back and forth.
“Not on the phone, Jay. At least not now.” She pleaded.
“It’s okay, Karen. I understand but we’re going to have to meet sooner or later.” He said with a disappointed sigh.
“I know.” She whispered. “And I want to. Now more then ever.” He slid his hand up his thigh to the mass in his pants.
“We’re going to meet. Right after I get back from Canada.”
“Are you going to come here?” He looked around at the emptiness of his condo and the privacy it allowed.
“No.” He said in a throaty voice. “I’m going to fly you out here.” He was sure she could use a little mini-vacation anyway.
“I’m not sure that’s going to work with the kids and all …” She moaned.
“It will. The ‘ex’ has them on the weekends now and then doesn’t he?”
“Now and then.” She said.
“Good. Then it’s decided.” They talked a bit longer then Karen begged ‘Jay’ to let her get some sleep. He was generous and gave in. After hanging up with her Josh undressed and slipped into the shower. He rubbed the bar of soap between his hands until they were good and bubbly. He began to scrub himself. He thought about Karen. He now had a pretty face to go with that sexy voice. And sexy it was. He heard her growl and then growl again. He shivered as his slippery hands worked over his hard body. It had been almost a month since he’d had sex and by the time his hands moved down from his arms to his chest then over his belly he was stiff and ready. He took himself into his hand and relieved his frustration before crawling off into bed and going to sleep.
