His home was a mess, not to the point of dirty, just very messy, and unorganised. Clothes, papers, books, CD’s, and such were strewn around the living room, the curtains drawn. Gackt smiled a little at his friend, moving across the room and pulling the blinds open.
“You just need to clean up a little, that’s all.” A wide reassuring smile crossed his face. “So… how’s your arm?”
“It’s fine.” He replied softly, moving about, busying himself by picking up a few things here and there.
Gackt nodded quietly, his concern no less than when he saw the bloody patch on Hyde’s sleeve. He was quiet for a few moments as Hyde tried to neaten up his place. Finally, he stepped forwards, one hand on the short man’s shoulder.
“Hyde… please. Tell me what happened.”
Hyde stiffened a little at the touch, pulling away slightly, his eyes avoiding Gackt’s questioning gaze. “Nothing happened.” He lied outright, but poorly, his voice wavering.
“You’re lying.” Gackt took a half step forwards, his brow furrowed slightly.
Hyde shook his head quickly, trying to deny the fact, but failing. “I…” He faded off, turning away.
“Haido… please…”
The shorter man’s shoulders slumped in defeat, his head hung low as he sighed softly. “I can’t tell you… It’s…” He paused. “I’m scared you’ll hate me…” His voice was tense as he walked to the window, peering out over Tokyo.
“Ne, Hy-kun. I could never hate you.” Gackt smiled softly as he crossed the floor and stood behind the shorter man, one hand settling on his shoulder reassuringly.
Hyde turned around to face the other vocalist. “Promise?”
“Of course.” The taller man smiled and nodded slightly.
“Ok… if you promise…But… please don’t tell anyone else.” He moved away from the window, rolling up his sleeve slowly.
Gackt’s blue gaze followed him, moving to look at the white bandage wrapped around Hyde’s thin arm up to his elbow. He felt a little twinge in his stomach; almost sure he knew what his friend had been doing. Hyde undid the bandage and slowly unwound it, revealing the fresh wounds on his arms, as well as old scars that littered his forearm. His head bowed as Gackt’s eyes open wide, his mouth falling open.
“Hyde…” He stammered, not knowing what else to say.
“It’s the only way…” Hyde replied quietly, his head bowing more.
Gackt was stunned, his eyes not leaving the other man’s arm, even when Hyde tried to cover it with one small hand. The taller man didn’t know what to say, do, or even think. He spoke before he even thought it over, his words just spouting out angrily.
“What the fuck have you done?” He asked angrily. “Are you trying to kill yourself? What you’ve done… It’s such a stupid, useless thing to do!” His voice had risen. “What the hell are you trying to achieve but cutting into yourself!?”
Hyde shrunk away from the yelling, tears welling in his eyes. “I’m sorry!” He cried.
“I just don’t understand why you’ve done this to yourself Haido?” Gackt was still yelling. “It never helps anything!”
“It helps me!” Hyde shouted, tears flying from his eyes.
“No it doesn’t! You only think it does!” Fear was driving Gackt’s words as he kept attacking the other. “Why didn’t you come to your friends for help? We would have helped you! You didn’t have to go and do this to yourself!”
“How?” Hyde retorted, pulling the sleeve of his shirt down, his arms crossing over his chest. “By yelling at me!?” He turned and fled, fighting the door handle and finally wrenching the door open.
“Come back here!” Gackt shouted as Hyde ran out the door.
The short vocalist ran down the hallway, bashing the call button for the elevator until the doors finally opened, he stumbled in and pressed the ground floor button. He sobbed, rubbing at his arm, nails wanting to dig into the open wounds and tear them open more as he huddled against the back wall, tears flowing down his face. The elevator stopped and the doors slid open, Hyde breaking into a run out the front door and onto the street where he ran to a waiting cab and gave the driver directions.
Gackt still stood in Hyde’s home, hands balled at his sides as he waited for the other to come back. His temper calmed quickly, the doorway still empty, the hallway silent.
“Hyde…?” He called softly, walking to the door and looking out into the hall.
It was empty. The only sign of Hyde was the bandage from his arm, lying on the floor just in front of the elevator doors.
“Fuck!” Gackt shouted, one foot kicking out sideways, connecting with the wall.
He ran back into Hyde’s home, grabbing his car keys and racing down the hall. He pressed the elevator’s call button and waited. Impatience to the better of him and he raced to the stairwell door racing down them two steps at a time, bursting out the ground floor door. His chest was heaving as he gasped for air, stumbling to the concierge desk and asking which way Hyde had gone.
“He took a cab Mr. Gakuto.” The confused young woman politely replied.
“Thankyou.” He replied quickly and turned, racing out the front door, climbing into his car and starting the engine. “Where did you go Hyde?”
Hyde was fighting back tears as the cab drove, the driver looking at him every now and then. He’d tried to talk to the singer but had gotten no response, so he just did his job and drove in silence.
“Here you are sir.” The driver said, pulling the car to a halt.
“Thankyou.” Hyde muttered, pulling out a wad of bills and handing them to the driver. “Keep the change…”
The man’s eyes widened, he nodded and drove away, leaving the short man near the river. Tears began to flow again once the car left and he stumbled down the embankment, falling to his hands and knees near the edge. Hyde began searching in the grass, crying as he crawled around frantically.
“Where are you…” He sobbed, wincing a little as a sharp pain shot through his fingers.
His hand grasped the blade he’d dropped earlier, tears flowing still, his body trembling, the sounds of his cries echoing across the river.
Gackt’s hands gripped the steering wheel as he drove through the streets, his mind raced as he thought of where Hyde would have gone. One thought bursting into his mind.
“The river…”
Gackt’s car pulled to a stop, the wheels sliding a little on the loose gravel. He killed the engine and jumped out the door, racing around the front of the car.
“Hyde?” He called out, starting to run awkwardly down the steep embankment.
His eyes caught sight of Hyde lying on the grass, back facing him. He sped his descent and fell to his knees by the vocalist’s side.
“Haido?” He spoke again, one hand reaching out to touch Hyde’s face.
“Oh God…. No…”
