A trip to the Hospital
Things had been going good. The bowling had been the most memorable event so far. Kat didn’t think she had ever laughed so hard since she left home. The only other thing that was thought about constantly were her encounters with Kane. It had only made her wonder more about him; luckily Chris hadn’t picked up on it...yet.
Kat sat in her hotel room; she had turned down the offer to go out with Chris and the others. When he asked why she said her back was sore from sleeping on it wrong. She was glad he didn’t ask any further questions and left excitedly with the others, wishing her back got better and she could join them some other time.
She didn’t tell him the real reason she didn’t feel like going out was because she had Kane on her mind. It had only been two days since the incidents and she couldn’t stop thinking about him no matter what she did. Presently she was trying to figure out just why she was so interested in him, but she couldn’t come up with an answer.
It was seriously starting to aggravate her and she got up and left her room to do the only thing that would calm her down; lift. She made her way down to the weight room and was pleased when no one was there. She dimmed the lights a bit and chose to work out her legs, they were always what she loved working on and she set it at 150 lbs. It was easy work, she focused on the simple motions and working the muscles in her legs. She felt the satisfying burn as she continued to work out, switching and working her arms and shoulders as she got tired of her legs.
She closed her eyes as she was working her shoulders, not hearing the door to the weight room close behind her and a figure walking up to watch her with interest. A grin spread on the figures face as the weight was increased swiftly, Kat having to pull much harder and it got her attention. Her eyes snapped open and she stood up to face the object of her thoughts; Kane.
He stood leaning against the weight machine with a smirk on his face, his wrestling attire replaced by a black muscle shirt and lose pants. Kat backed up from shock, narrowing her eyes and wondering how she failed to hear him come in. His arm shot out and grabbed her wrist, pulling her close to him as he peered behind her at the weights on the floor.
“You know...you really should pay attention...I think you’ll find it’s better for your health.” As she turned around and relaxed somewhat, he let her go and stared at her curiously. So far he only knew her from the match she had with Jericho, as for their little encounters...as far as he was concerned they were by pure accident.
She turned back to him, blushing slightly “Um...thanks...” Kat didn’t know what else to say, instead she picked up the weights and put them away. It was easy to see he had stirred something in her, just what that something was he had yet to figure out but was going to make damn sure he did by the time this new encounter was over.
He walked up behind her and waited for her to turn around, when she did he made sure she couldn’t duck past him and peered down at her. She met his gaze and held it, not knowing what he wanted but didn’t want to back down from him. Kane seemed to grasp what she was thinking as he smiled evilly at her, just trying to see how brave she was or if she would back down like the others.
To his surprise she didn’t. He had to admire that, if only slightly. It shocked him more when she stood up straight and gently backed him away from her, going back to the previous weight machine and adjusting the weights to her liking. He watched her the whole time, something about her annoyed him slightly. He didn’t know if it was the fact she was like him, or the fact she had no fear of him.
How he knew she was like him, he couldn’t say for sure. He suspected it was instinct. To him she seemed so unlike the other divas and perhaps these run-ins were a good thing. Yet he didn’t want to think about trusting her. Trust was for the weak and something he was not. He growled at the memories of those who used him.
X-Pac. Chyna. Torri. His own family.
He vowed to never be used again, and therefore to never trust. When he came out of his thoughts Kat was watching him curiously, she had stopped lifting and watched the big man relive some of his past memories. Kane looked back at her and said nothing, he didn’t know how much she knew about him but he wasn’t going to let her into his thoughts. Had he wanted to, they were too painful for him to explain.
Picking up some weights he selected another weight machine and worked his arms. Kat watched him and shook her head at the load he was lifting. Over 350 lbs easy, just how much she couldn’t be sure. She couldn’t even dream of being that strong, much less going up against a person who was. The weights hardly even bothered him as he gradually added more, sweat starting to form on his brow and arms and staining his shirt as he continued his workout.
Kat continued with her own routine as they both worked in silence until a pained roar sounded through the room. Kat instantly dropped her weights, which wasn’t a good idea as they landed heavily on her back, and she rushed to Kane. He held his hand to his chest and was growling angrily, as she got closer Kat could see blood on the bench and on his shirt.
Carefully she knelt beside him and tried to pry his other hand away, wanting to see how badly he had been hurt. Kane glared at her and jerked his hand back. He didn’t want her help and could tend his own damn wounds. Unfortunately for him Kat was just as stubborn as she sat on the bench and faced him.
Kane growled under his breath “I don’t need your help...” he winced in pain as he tried to move his fingers, he didn’t want anyone to see him like this. Kat looked at him with concern on her face. The bleeding was bad, and his hand could be completely crushed but there was no way of telling since he wouldn’t let her look.
“Kane.” It was the first time she had spoken to him directly. He looked at her while still holding his hand to his chest, a grimace on his face that would have sent most heading for safer ground. She hesitated before placing a hand on his arm and pulling it away, he didn’t know why he let her and quickly snapped it back to hide his injured hand.
Kat gave a short growl of annoyance and looked into his eyes “Listen...you may be able to take care of yourself, but you need to get help. Your hand may be crushed, this is one thing you can’t fix on your own...” She looked at him defiantly as he glared back at her, he hated when anyone told him what to do.
“Don’t TELL ME what to do. I don’t need your help, and I don’t want it.” He stood up, still cradling his hand to his chest as she stood to meet him. His temper was rising dangerously and he was about to show her why people avoided him at all costs.
She sighed and shook her head, still not willing to give up “If we go now, you can be back before anyone misses you. You can get your hand fixed up and no one will know about this incident but me.” Kane stared back at her, his shirt was now soaked with blood and he was beginning to lose the feeling in his hand.
He hated to admit it, but he really did need help. Kane gave her an angry stare and almost growled, “Fine. No one else knows about this...” Kat nodded and quickly lead him down the stairs to the parking lot, finding her rental car and opening the door for him. He slid in and slammed the door out of pain and anger, Kat sat in the drivers seat and started the car.
The drive there was quiet, neither one saying anything as she sped to the nearby hospital. It didn’t take long for them to get a doctor and she was forced to wait while they accessed the damage to Kane’s hand. It took 45 minutes until a doctor finally found her and told her how bad it was.
“The right side of his hand was nearly crushed completely, but we can do some surgery and have him fixed up. He was lucky. Had it been any harder and we would have to remove his last three fingers. Are you related to him?” The doctor finished speaking as he looked at Kat, who breathed a sigh of relief. She shook her head at his last question.
“No, we have no relation...how long will he be here?” She knew that if they took too long others would become worried. She only hoped Jericho wouldn’t check up on her as soon as he got back.
The doctor shrugs “It depends on how cooperative he is. Right now they are working on him and he should be able to go in 4 or 5 hours. They had to sedate him but he is still struggling, I’m guessing he isn’t much of a hospital person.”
Kat chuckled and nodded “That doesn’t surprise me in the least.” The doctor nodded and walked away, leaving Kat by herself and she thought now would be a good time to rest. It only vaguely worried her that she had to wait for so long, but she wasn’t going to leave now.
She was roughly shaken awake and Kat had to think for a second to remember where she was and why she was there. It came flooding back to her as she looked up into the face of a very pissed off Kane. He shoved her and she got up, glancing at his hand that was now in bandages. She looked at him sternly as he headed for the exit, luckily they had been on the first floor and he had filled out all the papers when he came too. Even luckier that it hadn’t been his dominant hand that was injured.
Kat followed him as they got to her car and the trip back was the same as the trip there. Silent. They arrived back at the hotel without trouble and they were quick to avoid the gaze of anyone important. They were lucky Jericho hadn’t returned. It was too silent for him to be there, which meant Kat wouldn’t be getting a bombardment of questions. Good.
Kane got his hotel card and swiped it, the door unlocking as he went inside and he turned to look back at Kat.
“Thanks...” His expression softened only slightly before he closed the door and Kat was left standing in the hall. Alone. She sighed and went to her own room, another encounter with Kane. She still didn’t have her questions answered...although she hadn’t asked any to begin with. Sighing once more, she went to the bed and flopped down. Holding the pillow to her as she soon fell asleep, Kat wondered how in the world Kane was going to explain this to Bischoff.
