“I should really say goodnight”
The meeting went completely over Aly’s head, she spent the whole time watching Ricky. He seemed to know more about what was going on than Mr. Savage.
“We’re going to try to take you two on the road as soon as we get all this recording done. We only have demos of the first single Rush. We need to get in studio ASAP.” Fred Savage spoke rapidly as he put out his cigarette.
Aly nodded and blushed when she felt Ricky watching her. It was hot in the room all of a sudden when she realized he was checking her out. She summoned her courage to stare back at him.
“Where is your mother?” Fred kept demanding.
“She had an appointment with my teacher she’ll be here in a few.” AJ said in a rather annoyed tone of voice, she had every right to be he’d asked her that like twenty times.
“You’ve got to stop biting your nails, soon you’re going to be meeting press posing for magazines, guys aren’t going to fanaticize about girls who bite their nails. In fact you two are going to see a stylist. Her name’s Kya she’s really good, I’ll see if she’ll fit you in Wednesday morning.” Fred said.
“Um…Mr. Savage we have school then…”
“School? You can drop out we can get you some tutors.” He shifted through the stack of slightly crumpled papers on his desk.
“Boy where did you put those forms?” he demanded of Ricky.
“You’d better not have lost them. If you did I’ll put my foot in your ass–”
“They are right there on the corner of the desk.” Ricky said rolling his eyes.
“Oh, let you would have lost them it would have really been something…” Fred threatened Ricky seemed unfazed.
“Your mother needs to sign these and then we can get the ball rolling, I wish she’d hurry up. I’ve got a label to run, I ain’t got time to be sitting here baby-sitting. As a matter of fact I’m going up and taking some time for myself.” Fred got up from his desk and heading to the door.
“If their mother ever shows up send her up to my office.” Fred said closing the door behind him.
“That man is ahhhhhh!” AJ exclaimed making a choking motion with her hands.
“He’s the best in the business right now though.” Aly shrugged, “It’s a miracle he’s taking a chance on us.”
“The Savage doesn’t take chances with anything,” Ricky said shoving some of the papers aside on the desk and taking a seat on it directly across from Aly.
“What do you mean?” Aly asked.
“Okay, um…how should I put this, the man doesn’t gamble when there’s a chance he could lose big. You two are money in the bank, you sing well, you write your own stuff, and you’re easy on the eyes.”
“You have that much faith in us?” Aly asked.
“Yeah,” he said as if were the obvious answer.
“I don’t even think I have that much faith in this and I’m in the band.” Aly whispered.
“It’s not only my job to believe and hope for the success of our artists, but it’s my pleasure.”
“I’m sure you’d like for it to be your pleasure.” AJ remarked.
Ricky blushed he didn’t dare meet Aly’s gaze. He kept his chocolate brown eyes glued on the floor.
“Ricky!” Fred shouted over the intercom.
He jumped at the shrill unexpected sound of his boss’ voice.
“Get you narrow behind up here before I come down there and bust your ass.” Fred said, “And you best bring those papers too.”
“I’ll be right back.” Ricky grabbed the papers and went out of the door.
“AJ!” Aly exclaimed.
“What?”
“Do you not remember your last statement?”
“Yes, I do.” AJ grinned.
“Cut it out.” Aly said.
“He wants you, you want him. Why don’t y’all just get it on?” AJ suggested.
“He does not want me. And I’m not looking for another failed romance, I gave up on that remember.” Aly said not sounding so sure of herself.
“Yeah right.” AJ said.
A few minutes later Ricky returned.
“I’m going to get some candy.” AJ said excusing herself.
“Do something I wouldn’t do please…” she told Aly before leaving the room.
“What?” Ricky asked.
“My sister is a little…” Aly paused to swirl her index finger around nearby her temple, “Off, it’s totally my fault for dropping her on her head so much when she was a baby.”
Ricky laughed, “You are a really funny girl.”
“I’m glad someone gets my sense of humor.” Aly muttered, thinking about how that little joke didn’t go over to well with her mother.
“Sarcasm is always good in a girl.”
Aly smirked, her sister had been right. She considered seeing if there was anyway she could further their strictly business relationship, he wasn’t bad looking he was damn near perfect in fact. He had intelligent brown eyes, a cute smile, and he seemed to radiate boyish charm. He seemed fairly intelligent without being too arrogant, he was wearing shoes. Aly continued down the appearance checklist and found no calamities like her other dates.
She knew from experience the more normal the guys looked the weirder they really were, and this one looked REALLY normal he probably had more problems than the lot of them, she should probably leave him alone.
“So you go to a catholic school?”
“No, it’s just a private academy, Crestwood…have you heard of it?”
“Nah, I went to a public school in the valley.” He said.
“Oh…So you’ve graduated high school?” she asked she hadn’t thought he was that much older than her.
“Yeah a couple years ago. I’m a junior in college.”
“Oh…” she said digesting the facts she’d just come across.
He was a little older than she expected.
“What’s your major?” she asked.
“Well, I was a music major and doing all that marching band stuff, but I got an internship here and I had to stop for a semester. I’m still a music major and I minor in business.” He told her.
“So I guess you know your stuff.”
He blushed, “Not really, that’s why I’m here with Fred. He’s a beast when it comes to this stuff. I told you he never gambles on anything, he’s not going to do anything that won’t turn him a profit. I wish I could be like that in both personally and professionally.”
“I hear that, I’m so sick of just going out on all these endless dates that never come to anything…” Aly said.
“I know what you mean.”
“Been on a few rough dates lately?” she asked.
“Let’s put it this way the last date I had threw up on me, and there was no alcohol involved.” He said.
“Wow…”
“It was my fault I gave her a Grande Nacho. And then took her on a ride at the carnival.”
“You went to that suck fest too?” she asked.
“It wasn’t my choice, our friends set us up on the date and they chose the place.” He said.
“It was a blind date that makes it so much worse. I’ve done those before, and I’m not going there again. My sister set me up with a guy who was actually blind. He turned out to be a total perv. The first time he felt me up I was like that was an accident, then he was like I want to get a feel for who you are, so again being the genius I am I let him again. But the fifth time I kind of had to deck him.”
“You punched out a blind guy?”
“He got fresh with me. What would you have me do let him molest me all evening I don’t think so.” Aly said.
Ricky laughed, “I’m sorry you have had so much trouble with guys, we’re not all like that.”
“Oh I know there are all kinds…” Aly said.
“You’ve dated a lot of guys?”
“Yes, but don’t go thinking I’m a whore. I don’t sleep around, I don’t even kiss most of them for crying out loud. I’m usually I one date kind of gal.” Aly said.
“Oh…” he said.
“I’ve been on at least six hundred dates and I’m still a virgin.”
“I don’t even know six hundred people, not really know them.”
“I didn’t really know them know them, it was over usually before the date was over.” Aly said.
“You seem like a girl who knows what she wants.”
“No, I’m the girl who doesn’t know what she wants, and I know that I don’t want what I always seem to get.” Aly said.
“I’m the guy who gets nothing.” Ricky said.
“You’re not a–”
“No, but I’m not the most experienced guy around.” He told her blushing.
Aly didn’t expect for them to get so deep into the conversation.
“That’s very admirable, a lot of guys only do the whole dating thing just to score.” Aly said.
“I’m not most guys.” He said.
“I can see that.” she said.
“You’re a really cool girl Aly…” he said.
“You’re pretty cool yourself.” She smirked.
“Would you like to hang out sometime? With me?” he asked.
“You mean like a date?” she asked.
“Yes,”
“Is that okay, to mix business with pleasure.”
“I doubt there will be much pleasuring on the first date. Fred fools around with the artists and people who work in the office all the time. He won’t mind. But if you don’t feel comfortable I’ll clear it with him first.” Ricky said.
“Alright, you ask him and I’ll clear it with my mom. If she’d ever get here.” Aly said.
“Cool deal.” He smiled.
Aly decided she really liked his smile. She could really like this boy, he seemed sweet and genuine qualities most of her dates lacked.
“Alright, so um what do you want to do when we hang out?” she asked.
“We could do anything that doesn’t involve carnivals.”
“I second that.” she smiled.
“We could hang out at my place and watch movies get to know each other a bit.” Ricky suggested.
“Alright, I’ll bring some DVD’s we’ll watch one of your faves and one of mine.”
“Your faves wouldn’t include Molly Ringwald’s greatest box office hits?”
“Yeah but I wouldn’t torture you with Sixteen Candles.” She smiled, “I was thinking Waiting or maybe Date Movie?”
“That would be good, I’ll order us some Tai food and we can just talk.” He said.
“I like that,” she smiled.
The door opened revealing her mother, “Aly, I’m sorry I’m late my meeting with AJ’s teacher ran late.”
“It’s cool Mr. Savage is waiting for you upstairs with some papers to sign.” Aly told her.
“Alright…hello there…” Carrie said noticing Ricky.
“Hi Mrs. Michalka.” He said, “I’m Ricky Ullman, I work for Fred Savage.”
“It’s nice to meet you Ricky, you can call me Carrie. I’m going to run upstairs and do that.” Carrie said leaving the room and returning a second later, “I don’t know where that is.”
“I’ll show you,” Aly said deciding to talk to her mother then about her date with Ricky.
“Thanks Hun.” Carrie said.
“I’ll be back in few.” Aly told Ricky.
“I’ll be here,” Ricky smiled.
Once they were out of the room her mother said, “You like him don’t you?”
“How’d you know?” she asked.
“You seemed like you were really into whatever you were talking about when I walked in.” Carrie smiled.
“He asked me out.” Aly explained as they made their way over to elevator.
“And you said?”
“Yes…” Aly said, “I wanted to clear it with you because, he’s older than me…”
“If you think you like this boy you should see him, but no sleepovers at his place and if Mr. Savage agrees you can see him.”
“Thank you Mom!” Aly said excitedly, they went up one floor to Fred’s office.
“I’m just glad your not giving up.” Carrie said.
“I’m sorry I’m late…” Carrie apologized.
“It’s fine, I just have some papers for you to sign and some things to discuss with you.” Fred said.
“You don’t have to stay up here, you can go back down and play with Ricky.” Her mother suggested.
“You two hitting it off?” Fred asked, “I thought you’d like him.”
“So you don’t mind if we saw each other outside of here.” Aly asked.
“No, but if things end between you two you’ll still have to see him around here. He’s one of my top guys.” Fred said.
“Alright,” Aly said excitedly as she ran for the door.
She made it downstairs in record time.
“I talked them and they said it would be fine for us to start seeing each other.” She said.
“Really, well in that case how about we do what we planned tomorrow night.”
“That’d be great.” Aly said beaming until she remembered her plans with Colby, she’d been blowing him off a lot lately.
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s just I made plans go out with a friend of mine, we haven’t hung out in while but I’ll make sure I see him Saturday.” Aly said.
“If you’ve got plans I don’t want to interfere with that.”
“It’s fine, Colby will understand, he always does.” She said sure of herself.
“Alright, so can I have your number?” he asked.
“Sure.”
They exchanged numbers and arranged for him to pick her up at eight the following night. Aly was out of it all day the next day, she hadn’t been this excited about one of her dates in a while.
She was spacing out at lunch.
“Aly did you hear what I said?” Colby asked.
“OH!” she cried snapping back to reality, “No, sorry.”
“It was only a comment about Mrs. Kellogg’s mustache.” Colby said.
“No, thanks.” She said.
“What?” he asked.
“I thought you asked if I wanted some of your chips.” Aly blushed.
“No, but did say your hair’s on fire.”
“That’s good.” She said gazing out at the trees swaying on the breeze not paying attention to what he’d said.
“And I’m in love with you.” Colby said.
“That’s nice,” she said still distracted by her thoughts about her date tonight.
“Are you sure you’re cool with us not hanging out tonight?” she asked a second later.
“We’re cool Aly,”
“Okay, I promise we’re going to hang at the mall tomorrow.” She said.
“I’m going to hold you to that.”
“I’m really sorry about blowing you off, I’ve had a lot going on but none of it is an excuse for not spending time with you.” Aly said.
“It’s okay Aly, you have things to do. What’s going on? A photo shoot or something glamorous like that?”
“I have a date.”
Colby sucked in a deep breath and nodded, “Who’s the lucky guy?”
“His name is Ricky he works at the label, I think I might get to date number two with this one.” Aly beamed.
“Uh huh…” Colby rolled over on the grass his sunglasses hiding his expression.
“He’s cute, funny, and he’s really nice. I really want this to work.” Aly said.
“Maybe it will…” Colby said nonchalantly.
Aly blinked wondering what he’d meant before she knew it the bell had rung and he was helping her up off the grass.
“I gotta go woodshop beckons.” He said.
She sat there replaying the conversation in her mind trying to dredge up the parts she hadn’t really listened to but found that they were out of her reach. She was too excited to figure out what was up with Colby.
She zoned out through all her classes but fortunately she knew enough people to get the notes from. After dropping off Heckle and Jeckle, since Colby had some mysterious thing he needed to do after school she went straight home to pick out an outfit for the night with Ricky.

Meanwhile Ricky was having the same difficulty concentrating.
“Ricky, you ain’t listening to me are you boy?” Fred demanded.
“I’m listening…”
“You might be listening to me but you sure ain’t hearing me. I told you to take all those flyers down not to put more up. After that I need you to call Navid and arrange a photo shoot for them girls. Then you can scamper off to go get some booty from Aly.”
“What? I’m not trying to get some booty, I just want to know her.”
“You know you want to get up in there, she’s a cute girl and let’s face it you haven’t had any in about ten, twelve months. And you have the nerve to sneer you damn nose up at me when you found me in the janitor’s closet with the sectary.” Fred said.
“You’re a married man and she’s only nineteen!” Ricky said.
“You robbing the cradle a little bit yourself boy.”
“Three years are between Aly and myself, and you’re how old?”
“Hush boy and take them damn flyers down.”
Ricky did what he was told he was so glad to be able to leave the office, on the way out he passed the receptionist he’d caught Fred with a girl younger than him named Kristen Cavilari. There was no denying the girl was hot, Ricky didn’t even take a chance with her. She seemed so far out of his league.
He assumed that Aly was out of his league but she was very open and sweet. Kristen was one of those girls who were apt to flirt with anyone who can get her a little further in life, ignoring people who wouldn’t.
“Did Fred make you scrub toilets today?” she asked laughing.
He countered with, “Did he tie you up in the janitor’s closet today?”
She looked shocked and tried to hide the rope burns on her wrists.
He walked out of the office smiling.
He went home and took thirty minutes deciding what to wear, finally giving up and just putting on another pair of his “girl pants” and tight t-shirt proclaiming some eighties band he liked.
He glanced at the clock and discovered it was time to go get Aly. They’d talked on the phone for an hour the night before, and decided that he’d go over and pick her up a little early and probably meet her dad. He wasn’t nervous; if her dad was as cool as her mom he’d have no problem.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aly dressed causally in a white bohemian skirt a sky blue tank top and flip flops. She curled her hair and it set down past her shoulders in beautiful curly waves. She stood in the mirror admiring the job that she’d done on her makeup despite the fact that her hands had been shaking.
“I told you should have gone for the denim mini skirt and the Judy Jetson shirt with the hooker boots.” AJ said.
“No way! You wear that on your first day with a guy.”
AJ rolled her eyes, “When’s he gonna get here? I can’t wait to see how dad’s gonna scare him.”
“Oh…” Aly dropped her lipstick, “I forgot to tell him about dad’s jokes… I’ve got to call him.”
“He’s probably on his way.” AJ pointed out, “If he’s a keeper he’ll get through it. And if he doesn’t I’ll get a good laugh.”
“It’s not funny, I think I really like this one.” Aly said.
“Well, since it’s not everyday you say that I’m going to ask dad to go easy on him.”
“Thank you.”
“Sike…”
“AJ please…”
“Alright,” AJ left the bathroom to go speak to their dad.
The doorbell rang probably before AJ could get to their father.
“NO!” Aly shouted running from her bathroom and colliding with her sister on the stairs.
“Ow!” AJ said.
They both ran into the living room to find their father dressed he was did for his joke in a old yellowed wife beater and the most beat up pair of jeans he could find a freshly opened beer in his hand and to Aly’s horror he was already talking to Ricky in that pretend drunken slur.
“Hi Ricky, you’ll have to excuse my Daddy he didn’t take his pills.” Aly said.
“I was just telling him I was looking to get you and your sister married off pretty soon.”
“That’s real nice dad.” AJ rolled her eyes.
Ricky laughed nervously, “You’re kidding right?”
“Looks like he didn’t run away…” Her father said in his normal voice.
They all laughed.
“It’s nice to meet you Ricky, I’m Mark. Aly’s father.”
“It’s nice to meet you as well.” Ricky smiled.
“You ready to go?” Mark asked Aly.
“Yeah.” She said.
“You guys have a nice time. Try to be home before one.” Mark said.
“Alright.” Aly said, “See ya later Daddy.”
“You look amazing.” Ricky said.
“You too.” She said.
“Shall we?” Ricky asked reaching out a hand to her.
Which she took and let him lead her outside.
“What a beautiful sunset…” Aly sighed as they stood on her porch.
“It is…” Ricky whispered looking down at their entwined hands.
They walked down the steps and out to his car, he opened the door for her. She really liked that, and she knew her dad was probably watching from the window.
His place wasn’t what she expected, it was a nice apartment not far from her house. It was neat and not really decorated.
“This is it,” he said, “I’ve been living here for over a year, I haven’t really done much with the place.”
“It’s nice…” she whispered looking around.
The living room had a coffee table, a couch, and a flat screen TV and entertainment center . The kitchen was a tiny alcove with a space saving stove and microwave a bar and some stools.
“I think it’s time you met Lumpy…” he said.
“Lumpy?”
“My couch…”
“Oh,” she smiled and took a seat.
She took the DVD’s out the bag.
“Which one?” she asked.
“I don’t know…um…Date Movie…”
“Okay,” she handed him the DVD.
He put the DVD in and loaded it, and then joined her on the couch, they were sitting close and his hand found hers again.
They hardly paid any attention to the movie they were getting to know each other. Ricky shyly worked an arm around her, and she leaned into him resting her head on his shoulder.
“You hungry?” he asked rubbing her arm.
She sighed at his gentle touch, “A little.”
“I’m going to call for some take out. What would you like?”
“Pizza is always good.” She said.
“What do you want on it?” he asked.
“Everything except anchovies.” She said wrinkling her nose.
“Alright, you seem like my kind of girl. You’re not on any crazy binge diet or anything?” he asked.
She looked at him like he was crazy and laughed, “No, I eat what I want. The benefits of a high metabolism.”
“That’s good.” He smiled before getting up to make the call.
He returned a few moments later and put his arm around her again. She scooted closer to him, letting him know that she liked the attention he was giving her.
He traced his finger over her cheek, “You’re beautiful,”
“You are too…” she whispered.
He blushed.
“You are.” She insisted.
“You’re the only one who seems to think so.” He told her.
“You don’t give yourself enough credit.” She said.
“This is moving to fast.” He whispered.
“Why?” she asked.
“I might kiss you.”
“I might let you.” She breathed.
“Aly…”
“Maybe I want things to go fast between us, what we have right now is more than what I’ve had with guys I’ve date for months.” She told him.
“I feel the same way…” he whispered.
“Well, kiss me…” she said.
He wrapped his arms around her their faces were only millimeters apart when the doorbell rang.
“Fast food.” She whispered.
“Really…” he said pulling away to answer the door.
He paid for the pizza and then sat it on the table after getting plates and sodas from the kitchen.
“We’d better dig in before it gets cold…” he said.
“That’s why God invented microwaves.” She whispered.
“I was really hoping you’d say that.” he sat down beside her and pulled her close.
When their lips finally touched, it was electric, it was like her whole life she’d been waiting for that moment. The kiss deepened effortlessly her arms sliding around his neck as he pulled her into his lap.
Ricky was having similar thoughts he could hardly keep up with them though. Kissing Aly was something else, he’d kissed a few girls before but none of them made him feel like his body was alive. It was a beautiful feeling. He reluctantly pulled his lips from hers so they could breathe, they gazed at each other for a few moments before going back to making out.
He tightened his arms around her caressing her back denying his instinct to take his caresses lower to her bottom.
He broke off the kiss to trail more kisses across her jaw.
“Ricky…” she moaned and he ventured lower his lips attaching to her neck.
“We should stop…” she whimpered as he nibbled on her neck.
He stopped to gaze up at her, “But you taste so good…” he whined.
She giggled, “You’re so cute…”
She kissed his lips once more.
“You’re teasing me…” he whispered.
“I mean too, I’ve never been this far…with anyone…”
“You’re not ready, I’m not going to rush you into anything.” He said.
“I trust you…” she said.
“I’d never take advantage of your trust.” He said.
She kissed him again, “You’re wonderful.”
“Let’s not go any further…I don’t want to do anything to make you uncomfortable.”
“We can eat and watch the other movie…” she suggested.
They did and then she curled up against him and it was nice having her in his arms. He would never get enough of that girl. He was content to just hold her, he loved kissing her, he loved just spending time with her.
He looked down and found that she had fallen asleep, he brushed her hair away from her forehead. He started to feel drowsy himself his eyelids grew heavy and he began to doze himself.
He woke up hours later to the sound of the TV blaring, the movie had finished and the DVD player switched back to regular channels which were a lot louder than the movie.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer theme song blared loudly. He waited for his eyes to adjust before glancing at the time.
It was almost two thirty. Well past Aly’s curfew.
“Aly…” he whispered.
She moaned in her sleep.
“Baby, wake up…I’ve got to take you home.”
She slowly opened sleep filled sea green eyes and gazed at him.
“Mmm…what time is it?” she asked.
“Two thirty… come one.” He said scooping her up in his arms.
“I want to stay with you…” she whined as he grabbed her purse and his keys and walked out of the apartment.
He put her in the car and got in himself.
She was awake by this time, “How’d we sleep so late.”
“I don’t know…” he said.
“I just felt right in your arms…” she whispered.
“I have to agree…” he started up the car.
Ricky didn’t expect Aly’s parents to be that upset when he brought her home. They walked into the living room and found no one.
“Well, I’m pretty sure I’ll be grounded but I’ll call you…” she whispered.
“No, I’m going to call you.” He smiled.
“I’m gonna hold you to that.”
“I’m gonna hold you too, come here.” He pulled her close and she kissed him.
“I should really say goodnight…” she whispered.
“Goodnight…” he whispered his lips touching hers once more before he turned to walk out of the door.
