Chapter 3 Enjoy the Silence
Orlando stood in express lane at the grocery store; at least that’s what the sign said. It sure as hell wasn’t going very fast, he’d been waiting for almost ten minutes. He looked at his watch and winced, he was going to be late. He put the hand basket on the floor and pulled out his cell-phone.
Cassandra was a little miffed truth be told, Orlando called about fifteen minutes before and said he was going to be a couple of minutes late. “Oh well, At least he called,” she thought to herself. “ At least I can finish picking up. She decided to stir-fry the vegetables after he got there so they wouldn’t be soggy or cold. The rice was almost finished, and the table was set, everything was ready. She grabbed a dusting rag and went into the living room; she went to the fireplace and dusted the mantle and then the coffee table, which was actually a wicker chest. Just as she straightened, she heard the doorbell, Missy ran to the door barking. Cassy looked at the rag in her hand briefly, and then shrugged her shoulders. She lifted the couch cushion and threw the unsightly rag under it, then ran for the door. She looked through the window in the door and saw it was Orlando, looking very sexy in his blue sweater and jeans. Cassandra looked down at herself and straightened her skirt before opening the door.
He smiled at her as she opened the door; it was warm smile of pleasure and greeting. She stepped back to allow him entrance. He stepped in and looked down as Missy was trying to get his attention by sticking her nose in his hand. He scratched her head and said, “ And who are you?”
“ That would be Missy, she is my roommate’s owner” She laughed as Orlando stood up with a grin.
“ Your roommate’s owner, huh, well that’s a new one.” He looked Cassy up and down and said,
“ Wow, You look great.” Then he kissed Cassandra on the check and gave her a warm hug.
“ And you smell so good.” Cassy blushed and felt her body go almost to mush as she felt his arms go around her waist.
“ Oh My Gods, he feels so damn good and he smells heavenly. I wonder if he would mind if I jumped him? NO, I can’t do that…Darn” She said in her mind as she forced herself to pull away from the wonderful smelling man.
“Thank you, so do you.” She said with a demure smile.
“ Dinner isn’t ready yet, but would you like a drink while I finish?” She turned to lead him into the kitchen. As they walked farther into the house she pointed out the living room, dining room and the bathroom, then she led him into the kitchen.
“ Would you like some beer or would you like some wine?” She asked as she opened the refrigerator.
“Wine would be fine for now.” He said as he sat down at the small table by the window. She uncorked the bottle of Chardonnay and poured a goblet about half full and handed it to him.
“ I need to finish cooking, so if you would like you can look around, Okay?”
“ No, I’ll stay here and help if you would like?”
“ No, that’s not necessary, you go sit watch TV or wander around. It won’t be long.” She said When he didn’t move she waved her hands in a shooing motion, “ Get out of my kitchen, shoo” She motioned him towards the door. He grinned and then did as she asked he went to explore the house. He went out to the dinning room and looked at the fireplace, there was some beautiful statues and a pair of elephant tusks displayed on the mantel. He examined them and the shuddered; he could not imagine why anyone would want to have elephant tusks. The animal lover in him rebelled against the thought, but this wasn’t his house. The statues were another matter; they were beautiful dark wood carved representations of Africans. He admired them and then moved on the living room; it was also filled with more African artwork, some of the statues were carved form the ivory of elephant tusk. They were delicate and actually quite beautiful. On the walls hung papyrus scrolls with Egyptian artwork, some were painted with gold paint, and they were very colorful and very nicely done. The living room was furnished with very tasteful leather furniture, there was one chair however that caught his eyes, and it was covered in a leopard print material. He found that to be rather amusing, but it fit in with the rest of the decor. There was also a fireplace in this room also; it looked like it was used quite often. On the floor in front of the fireplace was a large white fur rug, he had no idea what kind of fur it was but there were also throw pillows dispersed on it. It looked like a comfortable place to snuggle or just sit and enjoy the fire. He left the living room and went out to the foyer to the staircase. There was a large bookcase to the right, there were several small ornamental boxes decorating the shelves, some of them looked very old. He then started up the staircase and up to the second floor, as he made his way up, he found that Missy was following him. She was wagging her tail, she seemed perfectly happy just to follow him about the house.
“ So, Missy did she kick you out of the kitchen too? Well that’s okay, you can show me around.” He said down to the large dog. He made it up to the second floor and turned to the left down the hallway. There was a bedroom to his left with the door open. It wasn’t decorated elaborately, but there were a few personal touches about, there was a fireplace in this room too, with candles on the mantel and an oil lamp. There were a few paintings about the room, mostly landscapes and one picture of a vase of wildflowers. The bed was made up with a bright yellow comforter and white and yellow striped sheets. He smiled at that; yellow was his favorite color. He left the room and continued down the hallway, Missy following along, he reached another bathroom with a large claw foot tub. It was a bright and cheery room with white walls and a cream colored curtains and a blue and yellow shower curtain. He smiled again, “ She really likes yellow,” He said to himself. The last room was a workroom of some sort; there was a desk with a computer and chair. There was also a painter’s desk with a small lamp along with a myriad of paints and brushes. He got closer to the desk and saw that there was a miniature that was almost finished, it was attached to a paint bottle with a clay like substance that was rather sticky. He picked up the bottle carefully and examined the miniature. It was a woman, with a bow and leather armor; it was very detailed and painted with a lot of skill. The figure had long dark brown hair and even the lips were panted a delicate shade of pink. He was impressed. It must have taken a long time to learn how to do this kind of artwork.
Missy came up beside him and nudged his leg; Orlando put the miniature down and pat Missy on the head. He looked about the room and saw several shadow boxes with more miniatures. He looked at them too. He saw that the majority of the figurines were female, there were a few male and animal miniatures along with some monsters. They were all painted with precision and a lot of care. Just as he turned to leave the room, he heard Cassandra yell from the bottom of the stairs that dinner was ready. .
He made his way down the stairs and met her on the way to the dining room carrying a large platter of white rice. She handed it to him with a smile.
“ Here make yourself useful now.” Then turned back to retrieve the rest of dinner. Orlando took the rice and put it on the dinning room table. She came in a few seconds later with another platter filled with stir-fired vegetables. She placed it on the table along with the bottle of white wine. Orlando pulled out her chair and seated her, then sat down himself. Cassy was surprised at the show of chivalry. It wasn’t often that a man actually showed manners. It was the first time that anyone had pulled out a chair for her; not even Jason had done that.
“ So, did you look around?” She asked as she poured herself a glass of wine.
“ Yes, this is a beautiful house, I didn’t look at all of it, so after dinner you can show me the rest. I did notice that someone likes yellow a quite a bit.” He replied with a slight grin
“ Yes, It’s my favorite color, it’s so warm and bright. It makes me feel good. There is nothing wrong with the color yellow.” She said with a mock frown. He picked up the platter of white rice and served himself, then passed the platter to her.
“ I never said there was anything wrong with it, in fact I’m quite fond of the color myself.” He said as he picked up the plate of stir-fried veggies. He served himself a large quantity and passed the platter to her. The food looked and smelled wonderful.
“ Oh really, well then you understand what I mean…” She watched under slightly lowered eyelids as he spread the napkin in his lap then he began to eat, she watched for any sign that he didn’t like the food. He seemed to be enjoying it and so she relaxed and began to eat. They ate and chatted amiable throughout dinner; he had seconds, but declined thirds. She teased him by saying that he was too thin. He just grinned.
After they had finished their dinner, she got up and started to clear the table, he helped her by picking up his plate and the platters of leftover vegetables and rice. They took the dishes and leftover food into the kitchen and put the dishes into the dishwasher. She put the leftover food in containers and sent him out of the kitchen again. Before he left he kissed her cheek and told her how much he enjoyed dinner, then made his way out of the kitchen before she could shoo him out again.
Cassandra blushed profusely again after he kissed her cheek; she shook her head and grinned. That was the second time he kissed her, she wondered where this relationship was going to go, if it was going to go anywhere. She found herself hoping that it would. She went to the refrigerator and pulled out the fruit, washed it, sliced it and then put it on another platter. She also pulled out the sweet desert wine along with a couple more wine goblets. She took the fruit out to the living room and put it on the “table”
“ Orlando, do you know how to make a fire?” She asked, as she was about to leave the room.
“ Yes, would you like me to start one?” He asked with a grin
“ Yes, please...thank you” Then left to retrieve the wine and glasses. By the time she returned he had the kindling already lit and was about to start adding the larger pieces of wood.
“ Wow, that was fast. I’ve never been able to get it started that quickly. You must be an expert.” She said with exaggerated amazement. She sat down on the couch and poured herself a glass of the sweet wine, and then poured a glass for him she picked a strawberry and took a bite. He turned just as she put the berry to her lips, he watched as she took a small bit and savored the sweet morsel, then she took a sip of the desert wine. She puckered her lips slightly, then took another sip. She didn’t know he was watching and he was glad. It allowed him to observe her without her getting embarrassed. He walked over to the couch and picked up his glass as he sat down next to her. It wasn’t a full sized couch but a love seat. There was plenty of room for the both of them. He took a small bunch of grapes and began to eat them. The fire was burning quite nicely and they watched it in silence for a couple of minutes. It was a comfortable silence. Times like this made her think of one of her favorite songs.
Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Can't you understand
Oh my little girl
She remembered when she was a teenager, that song was almost an anthem to her. She was in her own little world most of the time, closed up in her room, listening to music or just reading. She had never been into partying or anything like that, but it didn’t mean she wasn’t rebellious. She was, in her own way. Cassandra was ashamed to admit that at the time she had absolutely no respect for her parents, she stole money from her mother and talked back and argued on a regular basis. She had boys over and had sex with them in her bedroom, with her mother in the living room. When Cassy thought about it, she couldn’t understand why her mother never said anything. Her father would have blown a gasket if her found out. It took her awhile but she finally figured it out, her mother didn’t say anything because, she was having an affair and Cassy knew about it. Her mother didn’t want her to say anything about it to her father. It was a sad case of, “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine”
Vows are spoken
To be broken
Unfortunately those words were those words were true for her parents, they divorced after twenty years of marriage. Her mother cleaned out the savings account and left. She remembered when her father came home and told her that their electricity was going to be shut off because the check he had written bounced. He had tears in his eyes, tears of frustration and hurt. Cassandra grew up very quickly after that. She had to be the rock, the stable one. It was hard, because she was still in high school and had her own difficulties in school. Her self-esteem was in the gutter, because she was overweight and had just gotten dumped by her boyfriend. It was hard several months for her and her two younger sisters, not to mention her father. It was during those months her father met a woman, she lived down the street and had three children of her own. Cassandra and her sisters were friends with them. The woman was in the process of divorcing her husband and ended up having to give up custody of her own children. Melissa was her name; her father asked her to move in and eventually after Cassy’s father and mother divorced, the same day he was divorced he and Melissa got married. That’s when all the nine hells broke lose.
Her new stepmother showed her true colors and became “The Bitch” Melissa and Cassandra didn’t get along for a long time, Cassy got thrown out of the house several times. Her younger sister chose to move out with her. They ended up at their mother’s after a really bad yelling match with their father and Melissa. It was a period in Cassandra’s life that she wanted to forget and that she was very ashamed of. She said things to her father that should never be said. After a couple of years, they reconciled and Melissa and Cassandra became “friends”. The only thing was that the “friendship” wasn’t a real friendship based on trust and mutual caring. Melissa was a control freak; she had to have everything her way. For several years, Cassandra let Melissa steamroller her into compliance. She was just tired of the fighting and wanted peace.
She loved her father, but finally realized that he was a very weak willed man.. Of course Melissa tried to run Jason off, but he wasn’t as weak as her father was. He told her that she was a control freak one-day on the way to the beach. He was lucky that she didn’t kick him out of the car right then and there. Of course Melissa went running to Cassandra’s father and made a big stink about it. Cassandra’s father begged Jason to apologize and Jason being the sweet and kind person he was, went over to Cassy’s parents did just that, he apologized. He didn’t want to because he was right and she deserved it, but Melissa was making Cassy’s father miserable. Well after six years of marriage Melissa and her father divorced, it was a volatile marriage to begin with and a worse divorce. Melissa and her father couldn’t seem to stay away from each other, there was talk of re-marriage, but Melissa showed her colors again and drove her father away again. For once her father was single and seemed to be happy. Her father now was married for the third and hopefully last time to a wonderful woman who treated him the way he was supposed to be treated.
Cassandra looked thoughtful as she sipped the sweet wine and nibbled on some slices of starfruit. Orlando watched her face turn almost to an expression of sadness, he couldn’t understand why. He popped his last grape in his mouth. He swirled the wine around in the glass then drained it. He put the goblet down and took her glass out of her hands. She didn’t resist, but she did look up at him in surprise. She didn’t know what he was going to do. He pulled her almost onto his lap and wrapped his arms around her. Cassy went into his arms with no resistance and felt his arms wrap around her. He was so warm and comfortable. It felt so right…so good to be held. It had been a long time since a man had held her. He didn’t say anything he just held her. They sat like that for awhile, and then she turned around in his arms to look at him.
“ Thank you…” She said timidly. Cassandra reached up to kiss his cheek, but he turned his head and caught her lips in a sweet kiss. He brought his hands up to hold her in place and kissed her thoroughly. She felt her heart explode in her chest as he claimed her lips, she didn’t want the kiss to end, but he did pull away to take in a much needed breath. She could still taste the wine and grapes on from his lips, he tasted so wonderful, a mixture of sweet and salty. When he pulled away she looked up into his chocolate brown eyes and almost fell into them. They were so deep that she could lose herself in them forever. She could fall in love with this man so easily, but knew that it wasn’t that easy. She couldn’t just give her heart to someone she barely knew, but it didn’t feel that way. It felt like she’d known him forever.
Orlando looked into her dark brown eyes, he saw the emotion in them, he could tell that she had very strong feelings. He did too, but there was also some confusion and caution. He felt as if a two by four had hit him in the chest and his heart was beating a hundred miles an hour. It was something he had never felt before, but how could this happen? He had only known her for a couple of days, not even that. He had to take this slow; he couldn’t just rush into it...could he?
