Kimberly’s Daughter: A Modern Day Romance
Part Three: Nice Glasses
Please don’t mind what I’m trying to say because I’m being honest.
The next day after Katie and Kimberly got home, the two of them and Matt sat out on the grass in front of their apartment building for awhile. Katie alternated between chasing butterflies, coloring in her sketchbook, and sneaking up behind Matt and trying to tickle him. Kimberly and Matt carried on a conversation with no real structure or point of origin, just laughing and enjoy the other’s company.
The third time Katie snuck up on Matt, he grabbed her hands and pulled her over his shoulder and into his lap. “Hi, there.” he said, grinning.
Katie’s mouth formed an indignant pout. “Not nice.”
He mimicked her pout. “I’m sorry.” He laughed and let her go, her pout immediately disappearing as she chased a squirrel climbing up a tree. “How old is she?” he asked Kimberly, taking a drink out of his coffee mug. He never seemed to be without it when Kimberly saw him, except on their date.
“Katie’s three and a half. She was born the day after my nineteenth birthday. Talk about a present.” Kimberly grimaced, but obviously not in dislike. “I went into labor on my birthday.”
“Ouch.”
“Yeah.” Kimberly smiled as she watched her daughter trying to climb up the tree the squirrel had. “Worth it though. She’s my life. I’ve never regretted it.” She turned back to Matt. “So . . . what’s the focal point of your life?”
He seemed to think for a minute. “Making sure I don’t screw up date two so I can get date three.”
She rolled her eyes, smacking him playfully in the arm. “You need to get a life, Matt.”
“What are you doing tonight?” he asked suddenly.
Kimberly shook her head, giving an apologetic sigh. “I can’t find a sitter for Katie on that short of notice.”
“Who said anything about finding a sitter?” he said. “Bring her. We’ll go to the movies.” He took another drink.
“You want me to bring my daughter on a date?” Kimberly said, raising her eyebrows.
“Well, it’s not exactly a date if Katie’s coming, but it could still be fun.” He reached for Kimberly’s hand and felt it twitch in his own, but she didn’t pull away. “Look, even if nothing comes out of the second date, I like you. I’d like to see more of you. And think of all the butterflies and frogs you’ll be saving in the process.”
Kimberly laughed. “You really don’t give up, do you?” She turned and looked at her daughter who was crawling around on all fours and roaring at a dandelion. “Well, I guess it couldn’t hurt. I’ll meet you in front of your building in ten, okay?”
He nodded, standing up and pulling her to her feet. Her hands twitched in his again. She was short, about nine inches shorter than him. “See you in ten.” he said, reaching down and grabbing his coffee mug, disappearing into his building.
Kimberly smiled, trying to push the warnings her brain was giving her away. “Katie, come on. We’re going to the movies.”
“Movies!” Katie stood up and hurried over to her mom, holding her arms out. Kimberly scooped her up and pulled open the door to their complex, trying to recall every item in her wardrobe as she walked up the three flights to her apartment.

“She interesting fashion taste.” Kimberly said apologetically to Matt once they reached him. Katie was dressed in a fairy dress. There was no other way to describe it and no need as it had been a fairy Halloween costume.
“She’s three.” Matt said, grinning. “I think I can forgive her. Now, if you were in that dress, I would worry.”
“Or get really turned on.” Kimberly said, winking and laughing.
“Or that.” he agreed. “Let’s go.”
“Shit.” Kimberly looked at Katie. “Don’t say that word.” She looked back up at Matt, literally. “Can we take my car? Car seat.” she said by way of explanation.
“Sure.” he said with a casual shrug.
Once Kimberly had opened the car door and buckled in her daughter, she reached under the seat and pulled out what looked like an extremely large pair of headphones, which she slipped on Katie. She got out of the car, shutting the door and noticing Matt’s bewildered expression. “They block out sound.” she said. “Katie hates listening to grown ups talk.”
“Ah. You have a weird kid. But, then again, look at the source.”
“You’re really doing great for that third date.” Kimberly said sarcastically. “Now get in the car, TV boy.”
“Yes, Mom.” he said, leaning down and kissing the top of her head.

It was some movie about penguins, which doesn’t narrow it down at all because aren’t all movies about penguins nowadays? Kimberly sat between Matt and Katie, tensing slightly when Matt put his arm around her. Or that’s what she thought he was doing. Instead he tickled Katie’s shoulders and pulled his hand back quickly. Katie turned to the pair, an impudent glare on her face. “Mommy, stop it.”
“Mommy didn’t do it.” Kimberly said quietly. “Now watch the movie.” She turned to Matt, the same glare that had been on Katie’s face on her own. Her green eyes were laughing. “Are you trying to get me in trouble?”
“I would never do that.” he said, smiling. “Now watch the movie like a good girl.” Fifteen minutes later he slipped his arm around her shoulders. She probably would have had to argue with a shoulder demon and a shoulder angel if that wasn’t where his arm was.

Katie was asleep when Kimberly opened the back door of her car. Matt stopped her, however, before she could wake Katie up to get her out of her car seat. One of his hands gently grabbed hers. “This was fun.”
Kimberly smiled. “Yeah, it was. You’re really good with kids, Matt.”
“I’m pretty busy the next few days with work.” he said, moving his other hand to gently brush her shoulder. “But I get a break Monday. So, dinner? A movie? One without penguins this time.”
Kimberly pretended to think. “All right. But only if I don’t have to wear a dress this time.”
“Fair enough.” Matt leaned down slightly and kissed her cheek. “I’ll call you Sunday with details, all right?” His breath tickled her cheek.
Kimberly gave a shaky smile when he stood back up. “All right.” she said, unbuckling Katie who opened her sleepy eyes. “Good luck with work.”
“Not ‘good luck’.” Matt said. “’Break a leg’. Night, Katie.” he said, ruffling her hair.
“Good night, Matt.” Kimberly said as he began to walk across the street.
“Good night, Kimberly.”
The woman turned and walked toward her building, unaware that Matt didn’t disappear into his until he saw her apartment light turn on. She quickly undressed Katie and put her into a nightgown, tucking her into bed. Not brushing her teeth for one night wouldn’t hurt.
“Mommy?” Katie asked, yawning and rubbing at her eyes.
“Yeah, baby?”
“Matt’s nice.”
Kimberly smiled.

Kimberly’s forehead furrowed as she watched her television. She had grown curious and typed ‘Matt Guber’ in Google. Now she was watching the second half of a show called Criminal Minds and getting more and more irritated with Tausha letting her daughter watch it. Granted, it was a good show and Matt was the cutest nerd she’d seen, but the gore wasn’t something she needed Katie to have nightmares about.
The phone rang, startling her. She answered it, still staring at the screen. “Hello?”
“Kimberly. Hi, it’s Matt. What are you doing?” He sounded tired, but upbeat. Kimberly was sure it was probably owed to several cups of coffee combined with overworking.
“Watching you on TV. Nice glasses, by the way.”
Matt laughed. “So you found me out, huh?”
“Yeah. You should wear those glasses on our date. I think you might just get me into bed.”
“I’ll remember that.” he said, laughing softly.
“So, what are you doing?” Kimberly asked. “I thought you were working.”
“I am.” Matt said. “I have about twenty minutes before I got into make up for my next scene. So I thought I’d call you since we haven’t talked in three days. If I don’t watch out you’ll find some other somewhat handsome guy who’s nice to your kid to get you into bed.”
Kimberly rolled her eyes. “Yeah, because I met so many of them before you. They’re either somewhat handsome or they’re nice to Katie to get in my pants. It’s never a combination unfortunately.”
“Except for me.”
“Except for you.” she agreed.
“Yes, I have my contacts in.” His voice was quieter, the phone turned away from his mouth. “Glasses. ‘Kay, gotcha.” His voice returned to normal. “They’re wrapping the other scene now, so I have to go.
“Going to put those sexy glasses on?”
“Nice detective work.” He laughed. “Talk to you later, Kimberly.”
“Break a leg, Matt.”

It was four AM when Matt finally got off set. He drove home, listening to the terrible talk radio that was on at the late-slash-early hour. He parked his car and walked to the front of his building, intending to go in. Fifteen minutes later, however, he was still standing there, leaning against the door. Kimberly’s apartment was the seventh over on the third story. He couldn’t see it now, but during the daytime there was a picture of a cat that Katie had drawn on the window.
He ran a hand through his hair as he stifled a yawn, finally opening up his building door. Kimberly was nothing special, not even looks-wise. She was cute, but not gorgeous. Blonde hair, green eyes, short, slim. Nothing out of the ordinary. But there was something there that was. And what guy in his right mind would pursue a woman that he knew had a kid?
“Since when have I been in my right mind?” he asked himself as he pushed his apartment door open. Talking to himself only proved the point more. He stumbled through the darkness in his apartment until he reached his bedroom, turning the light on. It was clean, but with five bookcases, each flooding with books, tapes, and DVDs. Yawning again, he stripped off his jeans and tee shirt, kicking off his socks and shoes.
He turned out his light and was asleep in fifteen minutes.
It was officially Sunday.
