It was again some weeks later and the evening had been pretty much like the ones before. They had been to a gallery opening and then out drinking with friends. Somehow they had all ended up at Neil’s place and around 3 o’clock Rebecca was the only one left.
“Was Danny lucky to get a nice fuzzy Indian guy for a cab driver?” She inquired when Neil returned to the living room after having seen his friend Daniel Parker to the door.
“Nasty girl!” he chided and sat down on the sofa with a sigh. “Oh dear, I have the feeling I will have a terrible headache tomorrow.” He leaned his head back and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
“No sir, you won’t!” Rebecca replied, half giggling. “You’ll have a terrible headache today. It’s so late that it’s early and that means that tomorrow is today!”
He looked up at her, smiling wickedly. “Well, you don’t get any more champagne either, young Lady! What shall your mother say when you return home drunk?”
“She doesn’t have to find out and besides…” She stood right in front of him now, pointing her index finger at him with some attempt at authority. “… besides, I don’t live with her anymore. As you well know!”
“So why is it that you always end up here and don’t throw one hell of a party at your lovely little flat? Darling?” He teased and took off his already loosened tie entirely.
She just waved her hand dismissively, kicked off her high heels and sat down on the sofa next to him; knees drawn up, head resting on his shoulder. He smiled. It had become such a habit of hers to do that. One he found incredibly endearing. Like her always taking his arm when they were in public or kissing him on the cheek all the time. But no, he wasn’t going to entertain these kind of thoughts, not even when he was drunk. Otherwise things would only get too complicated.
Suddenly she was kneeling on the sofa, one hand resting on his knee, the other softly massaging his neck. Her mouth was so close to his ear that for a split-second he thought she was about to kiss it.
“Do you know…” she whispered, “Do you know that I really fancied you when I was younger? That I fantasised about being your girl-friend? That I still fancy you now?”
He snapped out of his thoughts, feeling very much alarmed. He sat up straight and tired to escape her hands. Suddenly he felt her touches very keenly and it made him extremely uncomfortable. She didn’t seem to notice and just went on caressing his neck and whispering in his ear.
“It’s a shame that you have no interest in the opposite sex anymore. I mean you had girl-friends once… Maybe you should refresh your memory. Maybe I could help…”
Neil could hardly believe his ears as she said that. Had she really offered what he thought she had? Oh dear…
He felt like somebody had poured a bucket of ice water over him. Extremely sober and extremely annoyed. What the hell was she thinking? That he was her play-thing? He got up and stared down at her, furious by then.
“You better don’t say anything else anymore. In fact I think you should better leave. Right now!” He tried to keep his voice calm but even in his own ears it sounded icy.
For a moment she looked up at him, wide-eyed like a puppy dog and then she giggled.
“Oh come on, no need to get angry. I don’t think that one gets out of practice with…”
“Rebecca Hollowell! Now shut up and do me the favour to take the cab I’ll be calling you. And don’t dare to talk to me like that!”
The fury in his voice had done the trick. Rebecca was silent and not giggling anymore as she watched Neil leave the room and bang the door behind him.
She could kick herself. She hadn’t meant to say that. Now it seemed she had messed up big time. Slowly she stood up, feeling more dizzy and drunk than before.
After what seemed like an eternity she managed to get her shoes back on and left the room as well. The lights were still on in the entrance hall but no Neil was to be seen. She sighed, bowing her head guiltily. She must have really upset him when he left her like that without even saying good-bye. She put on her coat, found her handbag and went outside, closing the door behind her very carefully. It was properly better to wait outside for the cab to arrive. Maybe it would even help her headache.
By the time he had climbed, or rather stormed up the stairs and reached his
bed-room, Neil had calmed down a little. He shook his head; this was all just too absurd! He knew he should possibly just laugh about it but somehow what Rebecca had said had stung him. Maybe it was her carelessness, the way she so arrogantly assumed that all it took was one eager woman to make him change the sides. Again.
As if she had not made everything confusing enough. As if it was not unsettling enough to find himself suddenly very much attracted to a much younger woman when he had fought so long and hard to finally come to terms with whom and what he was. He sat down on the bed, burying his face in his hands. Jesus, he felt almost as silly as all those years ago when he had had a crush on his best friend Jeff. It was really quite ironic, when one thought about it. Back then he had had a girl-friend and a crush on his best friend and now he thought of himself as gay and had a crush on a female friend of his. How bad could it get? Would he ever be happy with what he had? Or would he always want what he couldn’t get?
When he came downstairs later that day after a rather sleepless night, thinking about the whole scene didn’t wind him up quiet as much anymore. Rebecca had been drunk and most likely just been talking crap. He had been drunk as well and apparently too tired if such a comment could make him explode like that. Maybe he should just take it as some wired compliment.
In the sitting room, the answering machine greeted him with a flashing light.
Neil rewound the tape and listened to the messages.
The first one was from 3.47 p.m., nobody had left a message. He smiled a satisfied smile to himself. So, Rebecca had not dared to leave a message. How come, after she had been that in-your-face beforehand?
The next one had been left 15 minutes later. Rebecca’s voice on the tape sounded rather nervous, he noted.
“Hi Neil, I’m just calling to let you know that I’m back home now. I’m… I’m fine, you don’t have to worry. Bye!”
He chuckled. Now that was typical! She said something silly and she still expected him to be worried about her!
Another message had been left just half an hour ago at 11.23 a.m.
“Good morning, Neil, hope you don’t have such a bad headache. Mine is killing me. Anyway, I just wanted to say I’m sorry. Becky.”
Neil switched the machine off and shook his head. That had been remarkably quick. Usually she remained terrible stubborn after they had had a bit of an argument and it took some pleading before she saw reason and apologised. He whistled softly to himself. He had an idea. He would keep her hanging on for a few days; he would not return her calls and then just pop in at her place and make up. She was still his darling girl but even darling girls had to learn their lessons when they did something stupid.
