The complete second floor of the hotel was sealed off. Not that Take That and their crew required that many rooms, they just didn’t want anyone else there during their stay. Nigel was walking up and down the corridor. He’d arrived early at the hotel before the boys were even there, to check everything. To double check the absolute brainless gits at reception so he was certain that no one, and he repeated NO one to the receptionist, would be allowed access to their floor. Actually, he’d preferred it if there wasn’t allowed anybody in the hotel at all. But the hotel manager calmly told him that if he’d wanted that he should’ve booked the whole hotel. Obviously, Nigel didn’t like the hotel manager.
Take That were packing their gear and getting ready to go to the tv studios which were at a top secret place since half the world seemed to want to be close to them.
“Where’s Howard?” Nigel asked James.
“Dunno, man. I guess still in his room, I saw Mark going into Howard’s room just a few minutes ago.”
“Bloody hell, we should’ve left for the studios 5 minutes ago! Bastard…honestly…”
And Nigel rolled his eyes as he went for Howard’s hotel room. He barged in and started “Howard, really we need to….” and stopped when he saw Howard sitting on the floor, his head in his hands and Mark kneeled down with him saying nothing but smoking a cigarette.
Howard looked up at Nigel, his eyes were red and puffy and he looked terrified.
“Nige, mate, I cannot do this,” he sobbed.
Nigel sat on the bed and sighed.
“Why not?”
“Because I don’t want it to end, not now….not, just….I….I don’t know.”
“Well, we all decided the time was right didn’t we Owen?”
Mark nodded and passed his cigarette to Howard.
“You know you have to do this Howard, finish it,” Nigel continued. “It’s not the end of the world you know.”
Howard shrugged and wiped his eyes.
“Alright, take your time I’ll see you downstairs in a minute right?” Nigel said this more to Mark than to Howard and so Mark nodded and mouthed “thank you” to Nigel.

Julia took a good look around her room. It was massive, in fact, it was so massive she instantly felt alone. She hated sleeping in other places than her own bed because she knew she wouldn’t have any sleep at all. At least she could get a nice bath tonight she thought as she scanned the equally massive bathroom.
The boys had left for the studios and Julia stayed at the hotel to arrange the after party that had been planned by Nigel for the label Take That was signed to. It wasn’t supposed to be a “party”, just a small gathering of important people with a few drinks so Julia had some time to take a shower and see a little of Amsterdam. As she was about to leave her hotel room, she heard a soft knock on her door. When she opened it, the thin blonde woman from that morning stood in front of her and smiled.
“Hello,” she said.
Surprised to see anybody up on this floor Julia asked “How did you get on here?”
“I’m on the list,” the woman said with a soft voice.
Julia had made the list but of course she didn’t know what face went with what name. All the boys had given her some names of people who were allowed access in the hotel, mainly family. Julia did know the list by heart however so she asked the woman’s name.
“I’m Dawn, Dawn Andrews. I’m on the Gary list,” she smiled.
Indeed Julia remembered seeing a Dawn Andrews in the list.
“I’m sorry I’m being so incredibly hospitable Dawn, but you understand…top security here!” Julia said.
“I know, I just didn’t get a chance to introduce myself this morning at the airport.”
Julia laughed. “So, shouldn’t you be with Gary then at the studios?”
“Oh no, too hectic for me, besides, they’re with their fans now. No, I’m here as a surprise. I know these days are hard for him, all of them, I just thought he’d might find it nice to have a familiar face to come home to tonight.”
“That is so sweet…you are his girlfriend right?”
Dawn laughed, “Yes, I am!”
“Now we’ll just have to hide you until they are back, how are we going to do that?”
“ I was thinking of just hanging out around the city for the day, I’ve never seen Amsterdam. Might have a look at a restaurant Gary’s always talking about.”
“I think I know what restaurant you mean,” Julia laughed as she remembered her conversation with Gary on the airplane, “I’ll come with, I’m done here for now and I was just heading into the city and I have an idea and if that works, we might double surprise Gary tonight!”
“Great! I was hoping you could come along…”
And the two women headed into the city chatting away as if they hadn’t just met.

The last chords of How Deep Is Your Love faded away in the TV studio and hundreds of female voices screamed at the top of their lungs. Gary, Mark, Howard and Jason had just sang their final ever song. It was over.
Gary felt relieved, as if a tree had been lifted from his shoulders, after a long time he felt free again and ready to take on the rest of the world and to finally become the artist he always wanted to be.
Jason was confused, he was ready to take a break from Take That but he also felt regret. Was this the right decision? What would he do now? Could his life ever go back to normal? Would these girls ever feel happy again? Millions of questions raced through his mind.
Mark tried to make contact with some of the girls at the front, trying to send out waves of comfort, he wanted to make them feel less sad. But the girls were practically hysterical. The atmosphere at the studio had been heavy but still there had been lots of laughter throughout the show. But now they were all crying. Mark wanted to give them all a hug and tell them it would be fine. He gestured going to some of the girls but James shook his head and Mark thought it wiser perhaps to do nothing so he bowed and gave his sweetest smile.
Howard was in tears. As soon as the song had finished he’d turned around and walked away, he couldn’t take any more and was about to collapse.
They all followed each other silently to the dressing room. Howard crashed in the comfy chair and no longer tried to hide the fact that he was devastated. Big, warm tears were pouring down his face. They all sat around like that for a while, letting the sadness overwhelm them and taking it in. They said nothing, because really, what was there to say?
***
Dawn and Julia laughed hysterically, they’d just visited the restaurant Gary was so fond of and had arranged the most perfect surprise, and as a sort of celebration for pulling their idea off and as a sign of new friendship they’d ordered a bottle of white wine, which was ridiculously expensive, and sat on a terrace in Amsterdam. Julia had jokingly said she’d make Nigel pay for the bottle of wine and they both laughed their heads off.
“Smoke?” asked Julia as she lighted a Marlboro.
“Nah, thanks, I shouldn’t,” Dawn answered, “I’m trying to persuade Gary to give it up too but he won’t listen.”
“Well,” Julia snickered, “That’s men for ya right there!”
The both laughed again.
“No seriously,” Julia said, “Gary is a good catch, he’s nice, friendly, good looking and a famous star! What else could a girl wish for?”
“Less groupies following him wherever he goes perhaps,” Dawn said.
“Less managers telling him how to wear his underpants,” Julia added.
Once again the girls were in fits of giggles but soon Julia told Dawn all about Nigels weird habbits and quirks. Julia found him possessive in an obsessive way, not even the way a mother cares for her children but like a jealous lover. She’d seen his anger looks when the lads had a more than warm welcome from their fans, even the nice fans who just genuinely loved them for their music and their work. Dawn told Julia about the big plans Nigel had for Gary when Take That would finish. Big record deals, world domination as Nigel was sure that Gary would crack the USA and bucket loads of money. By the tone of her voice Julia understood that Dawn wasn’t too sure about these plans but she also said that it was Gary’s dream, he really wanted to become an appreciated artist, a writer whose acknowledged by the other writers in this field. The boyband Take That had just been the first step, this was only the beginning, the real work was yet to start. Dawn sighed. She confided in Julia that all she really wanted was to have a nice house and just be together, maybe some kids. Dawns eyes twinkled when she mentioned kids.
“Can you imagine?” She asked Julia, “A little Gary running around?”
“Ah bless…” said Julia as she imagined a baby sitting behind a piano looking exactly like Gary. She giggled and said “Let’s drink to that, to baby Gary!”
They toasted their glasses whilst giggling “To baby Gary!”

It was already late when Take That finally arrived back at the hotel and Julia had started to feel a little worried; if they'd come back any later her surprise couldn't continue. But there they were, a little tired and shook up from their last gig, the emotional fans and hectic day but also pleased to be finished now and they were all ready to have a drink and relax.
A small room in the hotel was reserved for the Take That entourage; important people from the label, personal assistents of the boys and of course Nigel and Julia.
Everybody drank a little and chatted. Jason didn't really feel like talking to any of the hot shot people present. He sat in a corner, thinking and sipping from a glass of dry white wine.
Julia saw him and couldn't surpress a smile. You could almost hear him thinking. She filled two glasses with wine and sat down next to him.
"You alright?" She asked as she passed him a glass.
" Yeah," he sighed, " Just thinking you know..it's been a hard day." He gratefully accepted the glass of wine and sipped from it.
"It's a bit boring with all these big names, bet you could've imagined a whole different night to end all things, not?" Julia asked carefully.
"It's not boring, it's just....not us," Jason grinned as Howard joined them too, sitting down on the floor and looking knackered.
"Drink?" Julia asked him.
"Please, Vodka and tonic, make it a big one!"
As she walked over to the bar to get Howard his drink she now saw Gary finally walking away from Nigel who'd been talking about "the big plans" all night. He grabbed a chair and walked over to Jason and Howard and he and Howard climbed in the big chair.
"So, you doing the drinks tonight?" a soft voice danced in her ears and Julia new it was Mark. "D'you want some too?"
"Yeah, I'll have a wine please love," he winked and took a same sort of big chair to the other lads and waved at her to come sit down next to him.
Julia took the drinks and went over to the boys. They all sipped from their drinks.
Julia felt extremely uncomfortable sitting so close to Mark, who was so tiney and thin that she feared she'd squash him if she moved herself. But Mark didn't feel any shame and smiled at her.
About an hour later, all the important people had left and it was just Paul, James, Nigel, the boys and Julia in the room. Chatting away and feeling light headed from the alcohol.
Julia's phone went off and she walked to the door.
"Lads," she said, "I know this is your last night together and uhm, well I thought I'd arrange a little surprise for you."
"You're gonna strip?" Gary said jokingly.
Julia opened the door.
"No, she won't be stripping but if you're a nice boy tonight, I might."
Dawn walked into the room with a big grin on her face.
Gary's mouth fell open in surprise and he stood up to hug and kiss her. Behind her three guys came into the room with take away bags from the Akbar, the restaurant the guys loved so much.
Plates with all kinds of curry, rice and sauces were put on tables.
"I didn't know what you'd like so I ordered a little but of everything," Julia admitted looking at the huge pile of food now on the table.
"You're fab!" Howard said as he finally smiled for the first time that night. Mark was sending one of his biggest and brightest smiles ever and Jason raised his glass to her and cheered "You're the best Jules!".
Julia grinned and felt great as they all digged in.
Gary was cuddling with Dawn and couldn't get his hands of of her but he didn't forget the food, soon the two of them were feeding each other curry and rice.
Mark and Jason tried the veggie dishes and proclaimed that Julia had exactly ordered their favourite stuff.
Howard sat next to Julia as he gave her some things he thought she had to try. She noticed how clean his hair smelled even if it were dreads. They sat in the comfy chair she'd sat in with Mark moments earlier but this time she didn' feel uncomfortable at all. Maybe it was the booze, or because it was so late but she leaned against his great body and felt right at home.
"Cheers," Howard grinned as he raised his glass.
"Cheers," she almost whispered and she felt her cheeks go red.

On the other side of the room Nigel looked in disgust at the scene before him. He hated this. He hated Dawn, he just knew she was able to spoil all his big Gary plans. He hated Indian food 'coz it made him fart. He hated Howard flirting with HIS PA. He hated his PA because he could see her weakness and he just knew that she was falling for Howard like a brick.
His fury reached a boiling point when Howard gently rubbed Julia's cheek to clear some curry from her face.
He stood up and stormed towards them.
"What the HELL do you think you are doing?!" he hissed at Julia.
She looked up at him with innocence and fear in her eyes.
"What...why..what d'you mean?" She stumbled.
"You slut! You are flirting with him and you're in position to do that. You're like a little girl drooling all over him.
"What?" Julia got angry now. This was too much crap and she wasn't going to take it.
"Shut the fuck up!" Howard got involved too. "We're not babies anymore Nige, Jeez show some respect!"
"Respect? Respect?!" Nigel started screaming now. "How about YOU all show me some respect. This is the final fucking night and ain't nobody asked me what I wanted to drink."
"Nigel, stop it." Jason said with a sound of such determination in his voice that it made Gary's skin crawl. Jason had never spoken to Nigel like that.
Nigel's eyes were squeezed and it made him look even more like a pig.
"You," and he pointed a shaking finger in Julia's face. "Get out of my sight."
"No, Nigel," she said. "You get out of my sight. I and all the boys have taken enough crap from you. We were having a great time and you've ruined it all. You're talking about respect? Well, you've just fucked up the night of these boys and they will remember it forever. And you must be ever so pleased with yourself now. Gosh, you're revolting!"
Julia was shaking with anger and everybody looked at her. Nigel looked as if he was about to explode when he raised his hand and slapped her right in her face. She could feel the burning mark his hand left on her cheek and tears sprung in her eyes.
"You dirty bastard!" Howard growled as he jumped to his feet, knocking Julia out of the chair on her knees.
"Howard don't, he's not worth it," cried Mark. But it was too late, Howard swung at Nigel, his bare fist hitting him hard on his nose. Immediately blood was gushing from his face but he turned on his heel and walked towards the door. He said nothing as he slammed it shut behind him, his hands holding his nose.
Dawn sank on her knees besides Julia calming her as Julia was still shaking with anger and fear. Howard's face was white as a sheet. He looked at Julia then at the lads as if to say he was sorry and then quietly left the room.
"The fucker sure knows how to ruin a party." James sighed as he downed his can of beer. Everybody knew he was talking about Nigel.
***
The nice ambiance in the room was gone and Gary, Mark and Jason all got up, sorting their glasses and gathering their stuff; ready to go to bed. It had been a long, hard day and after this nobody felt like drinking anymore.
“Should I check on How?” Gary asked Dawn. Dawn had just wrapped some ice cubes in a tea towel and was holding it against Julia’s cheek.
“That might be a good idea, darling,” she said.
“No, no, no. I’ll go.” Julia got up and wiped away her tears. She stood up and headed for Howard’s room.
“She’s so sweet,” Dawn said to Gary.
Everybody in the room agreed.
***
Howard sat on his bed, thinking about what had just happened. It wasn’t his style to be so aggressive but a rage had come over him when he had seen Nigel hit Julia. He had felt so depressed all day long and a sweet girl comes and tries to make their final night as agreeable as possible and Nigel spoils it all. Typical.
Howard heard knocking on his door but didn’t react, he didn’t feel like seeing anybody really and just wanted to sob in his bed. But when he heard Julia’s voice outside he got up and opened his door anyway. She stood there with a tea towel dripping with melting ice. “Here,” she handed him the tea towel, “for your hand. Does it hurt?”.
“No, not really. Does your face hurt?” he saw the bright red spot on her cheek which must must’ve stung but she shrugged. She came in and he closed the door.
“I’m sorry it ended like it did tonight. I really wanted you all to enjoy yourselves and it all went wrong. I really hope you don’t feel offended by anything I did or said because really I never wanted to..”
“Don’t apologise Julia, it was Nigel who sent everything to pieces. You did nothing wrong, honestly. The man is just fucked up. I don’t know why I hit him but when I saw him lay his hands on you something….just snapped.”
“Well, normally I don’t enjoy men fighting over me, but you know…” Julia grinned.
Howard smiled weakly.
“Thanks Jules, you’ve really made our day better. You have no idea how I felt today. You might not understand our lifestyle or what we do and how come people go crazy every time we lift a finger but…this is me life. And today I’m saying goodbye to me life.”
He looked out the window trying to hide his tears and swallowed. He felt like such a girl.
“Hey,” Julia wrapped an arm around his shoulder, “please don’t. Howard, can’t you see? This isn’t the end, this is just the beginning. It’s hard to let go of something but it might also be a great chance you’re given here. You’ve earned nicely, you can do what you want, travel the world or start a business. Whatever. There are so many possibilities. Please, don’t feel sad.”
“I’m sorry, it’s just…I can’t…right now everything feels so….shit.” And even though he really didn’t want it to happen, he started crying uncontrollably. Weeks of depression, tiredness and stress all came out. Through his tears he tried to apologise, tell Julia how hard it was, how he felt so guilty for making all the fans feel so sad. How tired he was.
Julia said nothing but listened to his sobs and wrapped her arms around him.
“Shhh, it’ll be fine Howard. Go on, let it all out and tomorrow it’ll all be different.” She caressed his hair and barely noticed how she closed her eyes and inhaled his scent. His arms around her felt really good and it was only now that she saw how fit he was.
“Did you know, when we just announced we’d split up. I wanted to throw meself in the Thames.” Howard said softly, calmed down a bit.
“Why?” Julia was shocked and looked at him.
“Because I’ve got nothing else to live for.” He said.
She took his face in her hands. “Don’t ever, ever say such a thing again.” Her bright green eyes flashed and all Howard could think about all of a sudden was how her lips would taste.
They looked at each other which seemed to last endless when finally Howard whispered, “I’m sorry he hit you.”
“Never mind.”
Julia looked down, shy all of a sudden.
“Don’t be shy..” and Howard lifted her head and leaned in for what would be their first kiss.
