We followed Gerard onto the bus, we were so close behind that I could still smell him in the air. That gorgeous scent of aftershave and cigarettes that he left in every room and that he left in my mind every day.
There was no sign of him in the front lounge but I spotted the back of him strolling between the bunks, Ray's voice calling him to come and play video games.
"Gerard come on...don't be a pussy. Come and play Resident Evil!"
"I'm fucking coming. Calm the hell down. I'm gonna kick your ass so I don't know why you're so eager," Gerard retorted jokingly. Ray hated losing...especially at video games.
"Whatever dude. You are not winning this time," Ray replied confidently.
"We'll see," Gerard teased. I snorted loudly at their exchange of words and Gerard turned suddenly when he heard me. So close but so far away. He smiled gently. "You coming Sarah?" he asked.
"To watch you guys argue like a bunch of girls?" I replied, raising my eyebrows. Gerard shrugged and nodded, a grin spreading across his pale face. "Sure," I smiled back, following him down the narrow corridor between the bunks.
"I'm gonna go and grab some supplies before we set off," Frank called, obviously wanting me to go with him.
"You don't mind if I stay here do you?" I said, it was a rhetorical question but he still answered it.
"Well....no but I'd like some company," he pouted, holding his arms wide for me.
"Mikey will go with you...won't you Mikey," I pulled the covers away from the other Way brother who was snoozing in his bunk.
"Wah? Wasgoingon?" he mumbled, squinting at the bright sunlight.
"You're going with Frankie to the supermarket," I said briskly.
"Can we get candy?" Mikey asked, immediately looking more interested.
"Sure," Frank sighed, obviously downheartened. I felt a twinge of guilt but it soon vanished when I heard Gerard calling me from the back room.
"Are you coming or not Sar? Ray is getting antsy."
"I'm coming," I called, walking to Frank and pecking him on the lips. "I just don't feel like it honey ok."
He smiled at me, his hurt medicated by the kiss.
"We have all the time in the world," he whispered, holding me close. My stomach twisted, I couldn't reply.
"I'm ready," Mikey said, still sounding groggy from his sleep.
"See you," I said, as they descended the steps. An afternoon with Gerard, I could hardly contain my excitement. "Ok I'm here," I said, sinking down next to Gerard on the sofa.
"Finally," Ray said, starting the game. I didn't take any notice of the game, all I was aware of was Gerard's body close to mine in the cramped space. I could feel the heat from him seeping into my skin. His thigh pressed to mine, his upper arm pressed to mine. I wanted to be joined with him forever.
After what seemed like merely seconds, but was more like an hour Ray paused suddenly. "I need some nourishment man."
"It's because I'm winning isn't it," Gerard said, folding his arms in mock anger.
"No," Ray said, turning slightly red.
"We believe you," I said, trying to keep my face dead-pan.
"You guys suck," Ray said, getting up and leaving the back room. "I'll be back," he shouted, as we heard him rattling around with glasses and plates.
Me and Gerard sat there in silence for a few seconds, still pressed close together even though there was more space now Ray had vacated the room. He cleared his throat and twisted his hands together nervously. I didn't move in fear of touching him in any way that could be deemed inappropriate. I turned my head towards him and realised how close together we actually were. My heavy breathing made his chin length hair wave softly. I scoured his face for some emotion, some feeling that would tell me what I was doing was right, but I found nothing. He too turned his head so we were mere inches apart. I felt his breath on my face, minty and smokey but intoxicating. His eyes burned and I needed no more invitation. I inched closer to him, our lips almost brushing, our eyes forged together like molten metal.
"Do you want this as much as I do?" he whispered so quietly I could hardly hear him. The sounds of Ray in the kitchen showed that he was nowhere near returning.
"Would we be this close if I didn't?" I answered just as quietly. He smirked and it sent butterflies fluttering in my stomach and shards of ice down my spine. We were so absorbed in each other that we hadn't noticed Ray clatterings had stopped and his footsteps back down the corridor were getting nearer. His voice broke the deathly silence. We hadn't even kissed but we sprang apart at the sound like we had been rolling around the back room in the throes of passion.
"You guys don't want anything do you?" Ray repeated, popping his head round the door, a sandwich in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.
"We're good," Gerard said, slightly breathless.
"Time to continue," Ray laughed, plonking himself back in the corner and resuming the game immediately.
"I'm going to get some air," I said, the atmosphere between me and Gerard was stifling me. I couldn't cope with being so close to him but paralysed nonetheless anymore. If I was near him, I needed him to be holding me...loving me. I stood and left the room without another word and I could feel Gerard's eyes on me all the way to the front of the bus.
"Fuck," I gasped, my back against the same part of the bus that Gerard had been leaning against just a couple of hours before. I could still imagine him here, drawing. His sketch book still lay in the grass, where he had stood after Ray had called him inside. He was usually so secretive about his drawings. I flipped open the sketch book and found page after page of my image on the crisp white pages. Gerard's view of me, always alone, always staring with tear filled eyes, always on the verge of kissing him. That's how I always wanted him to see me.
