Pre Notes: This is chapter is a little longer than the others.
Despite the doggie incident, my good mood couldn’t be swayed. It may have been because I had just met the president, it may have been because I had been written a check which was worth more than my house and store put together, it may have been a lot of things but that’s not important.
After dropping Hiroto off back at the store, I drove to Maya’s house. Call me a love struck sucker but I missed him. We didn’t live close to each other so it wasn't as easy to see each other as you might think.
I parked in front of his house and went for the door. It was locked so I looked in the safe place he always keeps a spare key: the mouth of a little frog statue. As I entered, Plunger dashed right in and went up the stairs. Probably to sit on Maya’s couch. I always told him not to do it but he never listened. Hell, I wouldn’t listen knowing how comfortable it was.
I set off in search of my boyfriend. “Maya! You home?” I started climbing the stairs when I heard him.
“Over here!” I turned around and saw him poking his head out into the main hallway. He had a white stick between his lips and at first glance you’d think it was a cigarette. Looking better you’d see it was too slim to be that. It was a lollipop stick. Yes, my boyfriend is nuts about lollipops.
“Hey! How are you?” I asked as I approached and kissed him. It was a little awkward because of the foreign plastic object sticking out of his mouth but I’ve adapted. And it made kissing him even sweeter than when he didn’t have one.
“Amy Jane’s giving birth.” he informed with a smile on his face.
Amy Jane was a gift from me on our third anniversary and I thought I could never see him any happier. She was only a few months old and to see Maya mothering over her like he had, just made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. And now she was giving birth.
“How’s she doing?” I asked as I followed him through another hallway that led to a room that looked like a nursery.
“Maya! Here comes another one!” I heard Miyavi yell and we quickened our pace.
Maya squatted down beside the box Amy Jane was in. Three lamps surrounded it to give Maya and Miyavi enough light to see what they were doing. I looked to my left and started petting Jack, Maya’s other dog, affectionately. Maya got Jack from Miyavi two years ago for his birthday. The Meevster said he got him as company for Amy Jane. Looks like Jackie played his role alright.
Maya approached me with one of the cubs in a towel and handed it to me. They might have been newborns but this one was huge and fat. Just the sign for a healthy kid. I gave Maya one more kiss because I just couldn’t resist him when he was like this and he went to pick up another cub and clean it with a towel. Miyavi was petting Amy Jane so she would calm down. Sometimes I thought he should have gotten a full time job at the animal hospital instead of just volunteering. We all knew he was capable of it.
I decided to start up a conversation. “Hey, guess who I met today.”
“The president.” Miyavi answered without looking at me. On any other day I would have thought he said that on a whim.
“You guessed just because everyone knows he’s here. But not everybody gets a check for 15.000 poppas.” I said trying to keep my dignity.
“Really?” Maya looked surprised at me and I smiled and nodded.
I looked back at the bundle in my arms and my thoughts buzzed a little. “Yeah. You know what? I think I’m ready.”
Maya and Miyavi looked at each other wide eyed.
“Where were those towels?” Miyavi said and got up, leaving the room to look for more towels.
Maya got up and came over to me, holding another wriggling cub. “You’re ready? Ready to…” he let his question drift so I continued it.
“…to get a new truck. A big one. No more three trips to the lumber yard for me.”
“Meev, false alarm!”
I looked at him questioningly. False alarm? What was he talking about? Miyavi came up to me and said he’d take the cub so I handed it to him and looked at him and Maya as they went toward the box, probably to put the cubs next to their mother.
“I don’t sense much enthusiasm…”
“I’m thrilled about your new truck, really.” Maya said as he turned around and gave me a slight smile. What had happened? One minute Maya was the cutest and most caring person alive and the next thing I know, he gives me a sort of cold shoulder.
I went behind him and wrapped my arms around his waist before he could bend down and place to cub in the box. “Tonight, after the president’s welcoming party, let’s do something to celebrate. Just the two of us. Get a romantic dinner. What do you say?” I kissed his neck after, hoping he’d be willing.
“Sure.” He turned his head and we kissed once more.
“Okay. I got to get back to the store now." I said as I let Maya go. "Miyavi, say hi to Ruki for me, alright? Bye.” I called Plunger and we were off.
Miyavi looked at Maya’s disappointed face and tried to think of something to comfort him. “Well, he needs a new truck. So he can load all that crap that he’s full of.”
That brought a smile to Maya’s face and they both shared a good natured laugh.

The evening was a bit chilly so Maya was glad he had decided to take a jacket with him. The blouse he had on wasn’t so good at keeping him warm. He watched the mass of people waving small versions of the Uncle Sam and cheering like teenagers when a convoy of black cars arrived and the former president came out of the first one, waving to everyone.
He watched the scene unfold with feigned interest. He was there only because of what I had promised him earlier that day and he was waiting for me.

The atmosphere inside the auditorium where the party was taking place was a very welcoming one. People were dancing, drinking, eating, talking, singing… everything you would do at a party to feel good.
Suddenly, everybody started clapping as the former president entered and saluted everyone. “Fifteen minutes.” he whispered behind him.
“One hour.” Jun whispered back.
“Thirty minutes and…”
“Make it forty-five and we have a deal.”
Kirito, Jun and Takeo approached the small stage with two bodyguards behind them as Sugizo started talking into the microphone.
“Good evening. I’d like to thank everybody for coming. Tonight is a very special night so I’d like you all to give a big warm welcome to our new citizen, Murata “Eagle” Kirito.” The crowd went wild and cameras started snapping from all directions. Sugizo shook Kirito’s hand when he got to the mic.
“Thank you. As you all know, it’s been a year since I’ve vacationed up here. Now I am a Silvervale resident and even though I didn’t get a chance to get to know many of you when I was up here as president, I hope to…”
A door burst open. Maya looked like he had tried to get a hold of the handle before it did but he wasn’t fast enough. His cheeks turned a light shade of pink. He mouthed a “sorry” to everyone for interrupting and tried to get lost within the crowd. However, he couldn’t escape Kirito’s gaze which remained fixed on him since he had walked in. The form fitting jeans and white blouse he was wearing could make anyone keep staring and the crooked black visor was a really nice touch but the townsfolk knew he was taken so they didn’t bother.
“…I hope to get to know you all a lot better. Since I’m not here to ask for money… I don’t know what else to say except thank you so much for your hospitality and see you around sometime.” He flashed the crowd a smile and they all started clapping.
Getting off the stage, Sugizo came up to Kirito and asked if they could talk for a minute in private and took him, Jun, Takeo and the two bodyguards into an office.
“I’m sorry the timing isn’t better but it seems your arrival has coincided with something of a crisis.” Kirito made a sign for him to go on. “Please, take a seat. You see, our beloved mayor of twenty-four years has just passed away. The local counsel had an emergency session an hour ago and voted unanimously to name you, sir, as our new mayor. You see, our former mayor was always running unopposed. And the filing time is tomorrow so we don’t have when to find another replacement. And then Inoran here came with the idea to ask you.” Sugizou explained.
“I SAID GET THE PRESIDENT!” Inoran yelled causing everyone to jump.
“Folks, even though I’m not in the oval office anymore, I still have plans.”
The door to the office opened and half of Maya entered before he stopped when he saw who was inside. “Oh, sorry. I was just getting my jacket. I’ll come back later.”
Kirito got up and went toward the door. “Wait. What’s your name?”
“Maya, sir.”
“Maya. You look like an engaged citizen. What would you say to my being the mayor of your town?”
“Mayor? Really?” He came into the room fully. “I think you should do it.” Sugizo, Ken and Tetsu nodded furiously from behind Kirito. “And then maybe you could do something about that landing situation.” He went to the racks of coats and started looking for his own.
“Landing situation?” Kirito was confused and as he looked at Maya he ran his eyes over the blonde’s body, enjoying what he saw.
“Yeah. I’m a vet and I had a critically injured donkey in my helicopter this morning and I almost lost her because.. the president just had to land first.”
Well, now. That was something Kirito wasn’t expecting. He remembered the helicopter he had seen outside his window while on the plane and didn’t quite know what to think.
“I’m terribly sorry. That must have been a procedural thing.” he tried to reason.
“Maybe if you were mayor you could do something about that.”
Having found his jacket, Maya walked toward the door. Kirito thanked him for his opinion and they shook hands, after which Maya left.
“Hey. You’re leaving already?” Miyavi came up to Maya with two glasses of punch. Maya took one and downed it down in one gulp.
“Yeah. I don’t feel like waiting anymore. I’ll see you tomorrow, okay? Say hi to Ruki for me.”

I made my way through the throng of people and finally arrived in front of the auditorium. Maya was just leaving and I couldn’t help but see the disappointment on his face. At least we could still go for dinner.
“Hey! Sorry! Miller’s tank broke again. You look great!” And he did. If I wasn’t used to how good he looked I would have been gawking and had a bucket under my mouth to collect my drool. To show him I was really sorry I hugged him tighter than I ever had and I was going to kiss him too if he hadn’t pushed me away, making a face.
“You stink! Did you think about a shower?”
“Well, I did but if I stopped and had one I would have been even later. So is this thing over?” Lame excuse and lame way of changing the subject. I just felt uncomfortable and I wanted to take him somewhere.
“It’s over for me.” he said and started walking away. I caught up with him and asked where he wanted to go to eat but he said he was just going to go home.
“Come on, is it that bad? Okay, I’ll take a shower first. We can take a shower.” I said and came closer to him, putting my hands on his hips.
“I already took a shower.” That left me dumb for a nanosecond. I turned around because he walked around me and continued on his way.
“Maya, come on! What’s the problem?”
“I don’t know, I’m just… You know, for the past six years… Today, when you said you were…” I looked at him waiting for him to continue. He looked at me as if he expected me to continue. “I don’t know, Aiji. Why don’t you tell what the problem is?” Can you get anymore cryptic than that?
I shook my head and stated calmly that I didn’t have a problem. Maya just looked at me with a bit of sadness in his eyes.
“Well, that’s the problem. I’ll see you tomorrow.” And he turned around and kept walking. I take my words back; this was how cryptic a person could get. I just looked after him, trying to understand what he meant.
“Hey, Aiji.” I looked to my left and saw Tora, Shou and Saga coming toward me, probably from the party. “What happened? Did you two have a fight?” Shou asked me looking at Maya’s retreating back.
“It was just a discussion.” I answer. Technically, we didn’t have fight. We didn’t raise our voices and Maya said he would see me in the morning so, yeah, it was just a discussion.
“Aiji, I’m saying this because I’m your friend.” Saga started. “Get your act together and make that man the happiest guy alive because that ass of his is winking in everybody’s direction.” I looked at him as if he just said something along the lines of "Maya is going to have your babies".
“Saga! What the hell?!”
“Calm down, Aiji.” I heard Tora. Calm down? For all I knew Saga just said he was going after my boyfriend and Tora wanted me to calm down?! “And Saga, stop saying crap. Now, seeing as you probably won’t get Maya to listen to you anytime tonight, let us take you for a drink and give you some tips on how to go over the situation tomorrow.” He put his arm around my shoulders and the four of us started walking. “But after you take a shower. Dude, you smell like you spent the whole day in a sewer!” He exclaimed pushing me to the side, making me knock into Saga. In his turn he pushed me back toward Tora who pushed me again. Until I got mad and slapped their hands away.
Post Notes:
1. If I know correctly, Uncle Sam is the name of the United States flag. Don’t take my word for it, I don’t live in America.
2. Dun, dun, duuun! What will Kirito do after hearing Maya’s opinion about him being the mayor?
