Chapter three: Facing the Future
Four interviews, four fucking interviews and not one of them has actually been good enough to watch my little girl, Pete started to hyperventilate, I can’t do this, what was I thinking, why did I let Patty talk me into this? Walking towards the living room he hears the doorbell. At least there’s only two more. He thought as he turned around and walked towards the door.

“Like, I didn’t even know you had a daughter. It’s crazy so many celebrities are popping babies out left and right. Pete Wentz with a child, my friends are going to go completely insane about this.” The girl stated as though he was suppose to be pleased with idea of her telling all her friends.
“Well, Ashley, right” even her nod was annoying” Have you ever been a nanny before?”
“Well no but you can’t have experience without some one like giving you a chance right? I mean Petey, I’m pretty sure I can do this and with minimal help.” At the end of her sentence she flipped her long blonde hair over her shoulder almost as a punctuation to the what she had just said.
“Well ok I think that’s all the questions I have, I’ll call you if you get the job. If I don’t call you can just assume that you didn’t get it.” Her annoying smile and ugly blonde hair with brown roots was grating on his last nerve. She looked a little confused but shook his hand and smiled as she walked out.
“God Pete, you only asked the chick one question,” Gabe, one of his closest friends laughed. “You could have given her another one just to see if she got more sophisticated. She was kinda hot in the I’m blonde and fake way.”
“Shut up Gabe, I can’t keep doing this. Two of the other interviewees were exactly like her and the other two…they were worse, I wouldn’t even let them watch Aly’s doll let alone Aly all by themselves and the one before her? It was guy!! He could be some kind of pedophile!!! Plus, the whole minimal help thing? Seriously? I would rather just take Aly everywhere with me then have to worry about those chicks looking after her.”
Aly stomped in, her hand firmly placed in Vicky’s. “Daddy Vicky T said that if it’s ok with you I can go shopping with her and Uncle Joe!! Please, Please, Please?? Can I go?”
“Are you sure it’s ok Vicks?” at her nod, he turned towards Aly, “Get a coat and make sure you listen to Vicky-T because if you don’t she’ll tell me and you’ll be in trouble.”
She kissed him on the cheek and told him she loved him, leaving the room dragging Vicky behind her. Vicky waved her goodbye.
“This next girl better be good. I can’t take anymore interviews. I might have to resort to hiring the guy if she’s like the other girls.” Pete looked towards Gabe and started laughing. “Who would have thought I would prefer a woman over a man watching my child? Usually I would have automatically picked the guy, the second he walked in here.”
“Well, maybe it’s not just Aly you want a girl for. Maybe you want a better girl for yourself instead of the -I kinda look and sound like a man-, Danielle.” Patrick stated as he walked into the room making Gabe choke on the water he had just taken a sip of.
“Patrick, please don’t start that bullshit now,” Pete glared as Patrick looked at him amused. “I need someone I can trust, I usually know right away who I can trust and who I can’t and those 5 people were definitely in the not pile.”
Patrick just shook his head and looked at Gabe, who had been in all of the interviews at Trick’s insistence. Gabe nodded his approval at Pete’s words.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
After printing the directions off some obscure website, Maddie started on her hour drive to the interview. Looking at the directions she could help the words that came out of her mouth, “Fuck I’m totally going to get lost. Where does he fucking live in the boondocks?”
Shaking her head she picked up her cell phone and dialed an all too familiar number.
“Hello?” Maddie sighed as she heard a voice that sounded so much like home.
“Mom? It’s Maddie, I just wanted to see how everyone was doing.” Maddie hadn’t talked to her mom in almost 3 weeks. In her world, that was way too long. She heard her mom laugh on the other line.
“Maddie you worry way too much, everything is fine up here. It’s you we wanna know about how’s LA? When you going to invite us down to see your place?” Her mom knew that Maddie was calling for a reason but also knew she wouldn’t admit it without some prodding,
“I’m ok. I guess ok is a relative word, I just don’t know. Brylee and Trista encouraged me to set up an interview for a nanny job and I don’t know if I can do it.”
“Madeline Tyler, you can do anything you put your mind to and you know it. Stop fretting over nothing and knock the socks of the people interviewing you with your charismatic personality.” In the background she could hear her sisters, cheering her on and her brothers talking about what they should drink next.
“Thanks mom. It’s just so hard imagining myself watching another child especially after what happened to…ya know.” Maddie berated herself for not being able to say Tonya’s name.
“Listen Madeline and listen closely because I don’t wanna say this anymore. What happened to Tonya wasn’t then and still isn’t today in any way shape or form your fault and I know that you think it is but please listen to me when I say this. She wouldn’t blame you, she would blame the man that was driving drunk. Tonya loved you with every ounce of her being. You were the big sister that she never had, the one that tucked her in to bed at night and the one that was there when she woke up in the morning.” She listen to the deep breathes that Maddie was taking and could tell she was crying and trying not to be obvious about it.
“Thanks mom, I gotta go. I’ll call you tonight after the interview and everything.” Listening to her mom’s goodbye she hung the phone up and pulled off to the side of the road. As she stopped, the sobs that she had been holding back worked their way to the surface and once she started she couldn’t stop. It took her twenty minutes to calm down, shit it’s already 2:45, damn it, I knew I was going to be late.

Twenty more minutes my ass, Maddie couldn’t help but smile. Trista would be so proud.
Pulling up to the gated house, house? More like mansion Maddie couldn’t help but let her jaw drop as the guard came to her window, she told him that she was here for an interview. As she pulled to the front of the house the gasp that escaped her mouth couldn’t be helped. She rolled up her windows, fixed her mascara and threw open her car door and hearing a loud thump she jumped out of her car quickly.
“Oh my god, are you ok?” Maddie exclaimed
“Yea, I’m okay, I like run into things all the time. I kinda like got use to it a long time ago.” Maddie stared without pretense at the obviously stupid girl in front of her.
“Oh, umm ok. Well I’m sorry. I didn’t even see you. Were you here to interview for the nanny position?” Brylee and Trista always told Maddie her curiosity would be the end of her.
“Yea and I totally think I got it. I think the dad of the little girl totally wants me. It’s so in my bag!! Oh, wait you’re here for the interview also?” the dumb blonde stated taking in the black flared out skirt and red cardigan Maddie was wearing. “Well I just don’t want you to get your hopes up for obviously no reason.”
Maddie smiled and nodded at her, thanked her for her well wishes and left the yet again confused girl behind. Taking a moment to look at her self in the window, she took a deep breathe and rang the doorbell. As the door opened slowly she let her breathe out.
“Hi, you must be Mrs. Tyler?” Pete Wentz asked Maddie. Pete Wentz? The Pete Wentz? Ok calm down Maddie, he’s a normal guy, a normal incredibly hot, sexy and talented guy. Maddie he’s talking to you. Hello wake up from this day dream.
“What? Oh, yea sorry, but umm it’s Maddie, my mom’s Mrs. Tyler.” He chuckled a little at her response. “Forgive me for being a little flabbergasted, Mr. Wentz. You just happen to be the last person that I ever thought I would see pull that door open.”
“Yea you and me both, and if I can call you Maddie than I insist that you call me Pete.” He felt at ease with her and before he could figure out was happening he smiled; the first real smile he had given to a stranger today. “How about you follow me and we’ll talk in my office.”
Maddie followed obediently almost in awe of the gold records that were hung on the walls along with pictures of friends and family members. She stopped at one picture in particular, it was of Mr. Wentz, Pete, she corrected her self in her mind, Pete and a little girl that looked to be five.
Not hearing footsteps behind him anymore Pete turned around and saw Maddie standing in front of his favorite picture that’s hanging on the wall. He saw the far away look on her face and found himself wondering what she was seeing in her mind. Trying not to scare her he spoke gently.
“That’s my daughter Aly. This is actually my favorite picture of us, it was her first birthday with me, she had just turned five and she was so happy.”
“She’s beautiful; she looks so much like you. Well except the eyes, which I assume she gets from her mom?” Maddie mentally shook all the images of Tonya from her mind.
“Yea, the eyes are her mom’s, but uh she’s not around anymore.” Maddie was intrigued by the way his body tensed the moment she mention the mother of his child. He gestured for them to continue on. Opening the door to his office, he saw Gabe questioning look and tried to ignore the smile that came over his face when he saw Maddie walk in behind him.
“Take a seat. Maddie this is Gabe he’s kind here for a second opinion. I hope that doesn’t bother you,” as she shook her head no he continued, “Ok well, let’s start than shall we? Have you ever been a nanny before?”

Smiling, Maddie walked out the front door and to her car. She picked up her phone and dialed.
“Hello?” Brylee answered before the phone had even rang through once.
“Geez, Bry what were you waiting impatiently for my call?” Maddie couldn’t help the giggle that came out of her mouth.
“Maddie, Oh my god, Maddie did you just giggle? Seriously? What kind of interview was this?” Brylee smiled because hearing Maddie giggle like she was made Brylee’s day so much brighter.
“It was just an interview but I really want this job. I never realized how much I missed working with kids! But I seriously need to talk to you and Trista like in 15 minutes at Tommy’s café?” Maddie waited hoping that she could get off and get Trista to come also.
“I haven’t heard you this happy in a while; of course we’ll be there. I’ll drag Trista out by her hair if necessary!” Bry didn’t need any more convincing. She hung and called Trista.

Pete walked back towards the office where he knew Gabe and Patrick would both be awaiting him and his decision on Maddie. Maddie, there’s something intriguing about her. The sad look in her eye when she talked about her last employees, the way she happily talked about her love of children. She’s perfect. Perfect for Aly anyways.
He smiled at Gabe and Patrick when he walked back into the room.
“Hey man, I was just telling Patty here that Maddie was a hottie. I mean if you took her out of that cardigan and put her into a slinky little shirt.” Gabe smiled while trying to burn that image into his mind.
“Oh god Gabe, get your mind out of the gutter. I liked her though. She seemed perfect for the job, like she actually knew what she was doing and what would be required of her.” Pete had a tiny smile on his face as he talked about her to Patrick.
“Ok well maybe you should mull it over and call one of them tomorrow,” Patrick noticed the smile but didn’t comment.
“No it’s her. She’s the perfect girl,” he looked up to see Patrick and Gabe staring at him curiosity written on their faces. “Perfect girl to help me with Aly; she’s done it before.”
Patrick turned to Gabe and smiled. This is going to be interesting and this maybe our chance to get rid of Danielle, were the only two things running through his mind.

Sitting down at their usual table, Brylee and Trista were trying to contain all of the questions they felt needed to be answered from the moment that Maddie walked into the café.
“OH my god! Madeline tell us already!! Jesus if I have to wait any longer I might smack you!” Trista was always the most impatient one. “And what the hell is with that smile on your face?”
Maddie laughed “Where should I start? Maybe I’ll start with the really dumb blonde that I actually hit with my car door or before that with how I was almost late because I called my mom and she made me cry for twenty minutes, no I think I’ll just start with the opening of the front door. By the way, it wasn’t a house it was a mansion that I pulled up to with a gate and everything.”
“Oh my god you hit a girl with you car door?” Brylee couldn’t help but ask.
“Forget about the stupid blonde chick, who opened the door and why do you sound all secretive?” Trista cut right to the point.
“Pete Wentz opened the door that’s why I’m trying to be secretive. He needs a nanny for his six year old daughter.” Maddie continued to talk slightly above a whisper.
“PETE WENTZ?” Brylee screamed, after receiving glares from everyone in the café including her two best friends she whispered,” Pete Wentz has a daughter? Seriously? Wow that’s kinda surprising.”
“Yea well imagine my face when he opened the door! I mean over the last three months, Fall Out Boy’s music is the only thing that got me through the nights and the nightmares I was having. Oh and I also met Gabe, he was there to judge me basically but I mean a second opinion seemed reasonable.”
“Damn what did he do introduce you to his whole family?” Trista asked sarcastically.
“No, I just met Gabe and Pete; I didn’t even meet the little girl. I did see a picture of him with her though. She has these electric green eyes, almost black hair, and a huge irresistible smile. Plus, she has daddy wrapped around her pinky finger.” Maddie smiled at the duo across from her.
“So did you tell him about Tonya and what happened?” Trista quietly implored.
“No,” she answered tersely “I gave him no more than was needed. I can barely talk about her to you guys and think I’m just going to open my heart to two complete strangers? No it doesn’t work like that.”
“Calm down, Maddie. She was just wondering what was said.” Brylee tried to ease some of the tension between the two girls. Before either of them could answer they could hear the distinct voice of Patrick Stumph (Hum Hallelujah just of the key of reason, I thought I loved you…), Maddie leaned down and grabbed her phone out of her purse. She glanced at the number and looked at the other two girls in surprise.
“Hello?” she answered
“Hi, can I speak to Madeline Tyler?”
“This is she, who is this?”
“Pete Wentz, I was calling to inform you that if your still interested in the nanny position than I want to hire you.” Maddie’s eyes went wide and she smiled.
“Of course I want the job, when do you need me to start?” She could hear the smile in Pete’s voice when he answered.
“Is tomorrow at 7:30 too soon?”
Maddie thought about it, “No that’s fine. Thank you so much for this opportunity and I’ll see you tomorrow morning.” She listened to him say goodbye and turned to her friends the tension from earlier suddenly evaporated.
“I got the job.” She couldn’t contain her excitement; she was bouncing up and down in her seat. They were just as excited if not more for her. “Oh my god, what do I wear tomorrow? I mean what’s appropriate?”
The other two started laughing and paid for the drinks while at the same time deciding they would hit the mall and then her closet to decide.
