“We can’t stay out in the open for much longer. We’ll be safe at the church. They can’t come on hallowed ground.” Bob Bryar stood before his wife and acted as if he didn’t know her. He merely started to walk to the church with Mikey, Frank, and Persephone followed blindly after him.
As they made their way into the church, Persephone put her guns away and sat in the nearest pew. She slipped her hand under her shirt and her hand came away with blood. She groaned and ran her fingers along her stomach until she found the wound, flinching at how deep it was.
The light was blocked and she looked up to find Bob standing over her. “You’re hurt.”
“You think? Who the Hell are you anyway?”
“Let me help.” He knelt to help her, reaching to touch her and she backpedaled down the pew, running into Frank who was trying not to stare at the angel in front of them that looked so much like their best friend.
“Don’t touch me. I think I can handle it. I don’t really trust people who look like someone I watched die, someone whose pulse I personally felt stop. Now who are you?” Persephone felt a nudge at her leg and looked down to find Mikey still in leopard form, pleading with his eyes for her to get help.
“I am, was, Bob Bryar.” Frank and Persephone turned their attention from Mikey to Bob, puzzlement on their faces. “I did die, went to heaven and everything. I was there about a year before they realized my heart wasn’t. I was asked what could make me happy. My answer didn’t please them, so I was sent back. As a fallen angel.”
Persephone felt dizzy but ignored it, needing more information before she could trust him. “What did you tell them would make you happy?”
Bob looked down and had the grace to blush slightly. He looked back up at Persephone as he spoke, letting her see his face. “I told them that the only thing that would make me happy was to be able to make love to my wife one more time. Apparently, that’s not something they wanted to hear.”
Persephone felt a smirk flick across her face, but it was gone in an instant. She needed to know that it was for sure Bob, so she had to ask one more question. “I need to know that it’s really you, so I’m going to ask you a question only we would know the answer to.” She paused and sighed. “When was our first time and where?”
Mikey’s ears perked up at the question and he looked between Persephone and Bob like he had expected his baby sister to be virginal until the day she was married. The possibility that there had been another time that they had been together shocked and appalled him. He narrowed his eyes at Bob, waiting for his answer.
Bob ignored the leopard and smiled slightly at the memory. “Valentine’s Day, your senior year of high school. I saved up most of my money to be able to buy you a dozen roses. We ended up having a picnic on the Mountain. One thing led to another, and we ended up wrapped in the blanket in the backseat of the car.”
Persephone visibly sighed in relief and moved a little back toward him. She felt the blood run down her side and moved her hand to cover it, though movement wasn’t such a good idea. White patches of light went across her vision as it threatened to go out.
Mikey, sitting on the floor in front of her, was the first to catch her as she fell off the pew, but Bob was soon to get there, picking her up gently and gesturing for them to follow him to the priests’ quarters where he set her on a bed and commenced to taking off her holsters, sheaths, and shirt. He visibly flinched as he looked at the wound and shook his head. “I don’t see how you walked this far without passing out.”
“I don’t see how I’m not passed out right now.” Even as Persephone said it, she knew why she hadn’t passed out. She sighed and stuck her blood soaked fingers into her mouth, letting the blood flow through her body. She closed her eyes and heard the gasps of Bob and Frank as well as a surprised yelp from Mikey.
She opened her eyes and found them staring at her stomach like they had never seen one before. She moved her hand down her chest and along her stomach, feeling the smooth flesh move over the gash that threatened to spill her innards. She lay there for a moment, feeling the turmoil inside her body as it healed, trying not to think about the fact that she was laying in a bed with her supposedly dead husband, brother, and best friend looking down at her in shock. Now would come to question.
“How the Hell did you do that, Persephone? One minute, you’re insides are about to fall out, and the next, you’re, well, better.”
Persephone sat up and leaned against the headboard, looking between the three. She turned to Mikey as he shook violently and shifted in the middle of the floor, obviously no longer willing to stay quiet. “What … the … fuck?” He grabbed a nearby blanket and wrapped it around himself, though his words were loud and clear.
She sighed and shook her head. “Not everyone that escaped Contract Valley escaped with their lives. Some of us were given different lives, different abilities. Gregory Douglas could run at speeds that would make a police officer freak. His sister, Kimberly, could sing a single note and knock out hundreds. It was like that with almost all the supposed survivors. I got a combination platter for myself. Speed, hearing, sight, smell, sound, and blood that heals when ingested.”
Holding up her hand, the boys nodded as they saw the fingers that had been sucked clean. She looked down at her hands and realized that she was sitting in front of them in nothing but her bra. She sighed and looked at Bob. “You wouldn’t happen to have any spare clothings around here, would you?”
“Oh, yeah. I have a shirt you can use.” He walked to the closet on the other side of the room and pulled a shirt out, tossing it to her.
She pulled it over her head and sighed as she noticed him staring at her. “What is it, Bob?”
“I’ve imagined this for four years now, but I never thought I would see you again.”
Persephone frowned as her brother and Frank started to vacate the room to leave her and Bob alone. She didn’t know what to think about that, but she turned to Bob and sighed. “What do you want me to say, Bob? That I’ve wished every day to have you near me again? I have, but I’ve also learned to live with the realization that you died. You were dead. Dead means no coming back.”
“But I did come back. I may not be completely human anymore, but I came back for you, Persephone.”
“What about Marta? What about your daughter? What ever happened to her?” Persephone would not cry for him anymore. She had spent the first year after his death crying herself to sleep every night and she would not cry for him any longer.
“Marta was too young to choose to stay or go. They would not let me bring her with me, telling me that it was not my choice, but hers when she grew older. She was happy and well taken care of. Your mother and father saw to that.”
She didn’t know what to say. She wanted her daughter and parents happy, and if they were together, then she knew they would be happy. She shook her head, not wanting to love him again, not wanting to lose him again. “No, Bob. It doesn’t work that way. They may be happy, but you left me. I learned to deal with being alone, unloved, hated. I will NOT have you in my life just to have to worry about losing you again.”
She stood and went to walk out of the room, but he grabbed her and pulled her into him, his lips meeting hers. For a moment, she didn’t know what was happening and tried to fight it, but with the touch of his lips, she knew there was no way to fight it. She returned the kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck, letting him think she was all his, before kneeing him hard in the crotch, and sending him sprawling on the floor.
“I’m not the same little girl you used to manipulate with that kiss, Bob Bryar. I’m a hunter now, a killer. I don’t fall with a kiss.” I’ll fall when I know I can’t lose you again. Her thoughts had always been able to show on her face so she grabbed her weapons and left the room before he could say anything else to her. She didn’t have time for affairs of the heart. She had an army to fight and needed to raise an army of her own. She just had to figure out who and where they were.
