Chloe woke up in a cold sweat, mind a complete buzz. She shook her head and crawled out of the bed, heading into the kitchen. She needed something sweet and found it in the form of a pack of candy bars in the fridge. Sitting at the table in nothing but a tank top and her underwear, she tried to remember her dream, her vision.
She could remember her mother’s eyes with tears in them as she embraced her daughter. Her father’s gently kisses as he promised to always watch over her. She remembered her uncle Gerard as he blew raspberries on her stomach, telling her to behave for her aunt Nia, and her uncle Mikey, kissing her before turning into his giant leopard form and letting her ride him around the house.
She shook her head, clearing the memories of the day she had lost all her family from her mind. She took another bite of the chocolate bar before hearing whimpering coming from the direction of Spencer’s room. Growing concerned as it grew louder, she opened his door slowly and walked over to where he lay on the bed, tossing and turning.
She had a moment to think about the fact that he wasn’t wearing a shirt before she laid her hand on his shoulder, shaking him gently. “Spencer? Spencer, it’s just a dream. Wake up.”
He jumped and sat up straight, staring at her like he had never seen her before. “What the fuck are you doing in my room?” He didn’t even show the least bit of recognition as he hit her square in the jaw. She fell against the wall and her eyes blew to green as she kicked him in the chest when he moved toward her. He grabbed her and tossed her through the door onto the couch and only Alex’s hand on her arm kept her upright.
“Stop it! Both of you! Spencer, she was only trying to help so back the fuck off!” He shoved Chloe toward her room and gave her the glare that said she had better just get to bed before he hit her himself. He turned to Spencer and walked over to him, punching him so hard he went down. “Don’t you ever, ever hit Chloe, again. Next time, I won’t hold back.” He turned and disappeared back into his own room, slamming the door.
Needless to say, breakfast the following more was less than comfortable. Chloe had managed to get up and make enough breakfast for the three of them, though she was more than willing to poison Spencer’s food. She sighed in relief as he ate quietly and disappeared out of the apartment into the elevator. She heard Alex sigh as well and looked at him. “What’s up, Alex?”
“Mom wants me to come home for a while. She found out about what I did in Dr. Smith’s class and told me that if I didn’t get up there and make it up to him that she was going to come kill me herself. I don’t want to leave you alone here with Spencer.” He growled slightly as he said the name.
“Then go home, Alex. If you hadn’t have shown up last night, I would have killed him. He didn’t have anything on me. I’ll be fine here.” Chloe had known that Nia wouldn’t be able to live without her baby for long. She had been waiting for this to happen. “Besides, Alex, I know that you want to go back as much as she wants you back. You’re missing Brendon, and you know it.”
“Chloe …” Alex blushed bright red and looked down at his hands at the implications she was making. Brendon Urie had been Alex’s best friend since Alex was ten. He was a few years older than Alex, but that had never made much of a difference to them. What Chloe was implying, and his reaction made it all the more obvious, was that Alex was in love with his best friend.
“Don’t even try that with me, Alex. I’m not stupid. I know that you and Brendon are an item. Stop.” She held her hand up before he could protest. “I saw the two of you kissing behind the bleachers the other day. It’s alright. I don’t care. Auntie and Uncle Frank won’t care either.”
“You really don’t care that I’m, um, that I’m gay?”
Chloe shook her head and walked over to him, wrapping her arms around his neck and sitting on his lap. “Nope. You’re my older brother and always will be. I love you even more now that I know I can take you shopping with me.”
“Very funny, Chlo.” He kissed her on the cheek and sighed. “I have been missing him, you’re right. Are you sure you’ll be okay without me?”
“I killed a fucking vampire yesterday; I think I’ll be fine.” She slipped from his lap and went to clean up as he moved to his room to get his things to take a taxi home. She shook her head as he tripped over his own shoes. “Those would be your shoes, bastard!”
“I know, whore!” He laughed at their playful banter before coming out and heading to the elevator. “I called the taxi and they’re on their way. Call me if you need me, okay? If not, I’ll be back in two weeks.”
Chloe nodded and watched as he left. She finished cleaning up the kitchen and went into the elevator to see what the company was all about. She found Bill in the office downstairs and smiled as he jumped when she came out. “I was about to come and get you, Chloe. I wanted to be the one to give you a tour of the facilities. Maybe give you a little incite into what we do here.”
Chloe nodded and followed him around, meeting all the various bounty hunters and things around the office. Most of the people she met were human, but a few she could tell were at least psychic. It was weird to think she had spent her whole life thinking her family was the only ones left.
After several hours of just learning about the place, he took her down into the depths of the building, getting her a card and pass code so she could roam around on her own, and showed her the training room. “I think it’s best if you know how to shoot a gun, Chloe. Around here, we all carry one with us at all times. We’ll see if you can shoot and, if you can, we’ll get you a license and a gun. Here. Try this. It was always your mother’s favorite.”
Chloe took the gun he handed her and found the balance in her hand. She turned the safety off and pointed at the target, shooting off all fifteen rounds before he had even told her how to shoot the thing. He frowned and brought the target close to them, gasping as he realized that she had shot all fifteen rounds through the same hole. “Was that bad, Bill?”
“My Gucci, Chloe! That was outrageous! No one has ever done that before. I guess we can just go ahead and give you a license. How did you learn to shoot like that?”
“I’m state champion. The private school I go to has a shooting range. They wouldn’t let girls shoot there so I snuck in one time and showed them just what they were missing by not letting me shoot. They put me in the competition and I won.” She shrugged as if it was no big deal and popped the clip from the gun, placing both on the table.
He was shaking his head the entire time he filled out her shooting license. He handed it to her and then led her down the hall into the weapons room. “Pick a shoulder holster and a gun.”
She found a simple nylon shoulder holster and the same gun she had just shot. She slipped them on and found that it was surprisingly comfortable and covered it with a jean jacket she found on a hook, showing Bill. “How’s this?”
“Perfect. You’re all set to run the company now. Don’t worry. I’m here to help.” She nodded and followed him back upstairs.
Almost as soon as they were upstairs though, they realized that something was wrong. Someone grabbed Bill and started to talk rapidly in a foreign language about something that didn’t sound to good. Bill came over to Chloe and smiled. “Your first day on the job, and we’ve already gotten a call. Contract Valley has been abandoned because of an invasion of vampires.”
“Contract Valley?” Chloe felt fear in her heart. “What about Frank, Nia, and Alex? Did you hear from them?”
Bill nodded and smiled. “They’re fine. They went to help the Rolling Hills division of the company. Something about wanting to see how you would handle things on your own.”
Chloe nodded and followed the people out to their cars, pulling into her own with Bill and, surprisingly, Spencer. “What are you doing here?”
“Besides you now, I’m the youngest shooter. I’m also one of the best. They’re going to need me.”
Chloe shook her head and pulled out of the parking garage with a screech, speeding down the road because Bill told her to. She made it to Contract Valley in less than two hours, a strong feat considering at the speed limit it was a four hour drive.
She stopped at the town gates and frowned, her mind flashing to a picture her mother had given her when she was four. It had been a picture of Contract Valley before the restoration. Her beautiful small town looked like it had been ravaged by war. The boom of a grenade going off didn’t help stop that illusion.
“What was that?!” She slipped from the car and yelled over the noise to Bill.
“High powered grenade launcher. Seems to be coming from the right. You know the layout of the new city, where did it sound like it hit?”
“Home.” Chloe jumped over the low wall that had been built in her absence and found other following her. She slipped into a crevice as a group of troll-looking creatures came around the corner. As soon as they were gone, she continued to move through the streets of her town.
She stopped beside the church and turned to those behind her, frowning. “The Portal to the other side if open. I can feel it.”
“Me too.” Spencer’s voice could be heard from the back of the crowd. She nodded and slipped along the walls of the church, pulling her gun as she spotted her house and the crowd of vampires there. She felt the tears come to her eyes at the sight of her godfather’s body laying at the foot of the steps. “Bill, is that Frank?”
She heard the movement behind her as he moved up beside her. He gasped and shook his head. “But Nia said that they were okay.”
“Nia would have blocked this out to keep her and her son safe.” Chloe turned the safety on her gun off and moved from the wall, shooting the vampires square between the eyes as they saw her. She shot the one closest to Frank’s body and then bent down, crying as she found no pulse in her godfather’s body. He had gone to join her parents.
She stood and shot a few more vampires that were joining the ranks behind her people and shook her head. “Everyone get back to the cars. It’s too dangerous for humans now.” She shot another vampire and found Spencer standing beside her, shooting along with her.
As soon as she was sure that her people were all cleared out of Contract Valley, she ducked into her house, Spencer close behind, and slammed the door behind her. The house, she could tell, was empty, but now she had a bigger problem then vampires. She was trapped in a house with a guy she didn’t really like. What else could go wrong?
