[Jenn's Point of View]
Why did I even have to go there, it's not like I was wanted there. Neither of us was. Neither me nor Ellie. But when our mother died, we had no other relatives. So we were shipped off to our father, a father we barely knew. A father that had no idea how to take care of an eight year old, and a one year old.
All the houses on his street looked so different from the homes back in Chicago. I missed our house, with its white fence and huge lawns. I missed our swings and our sandbox. But mostly I missed my mother. I missed her so much, and it hurt so bad to know she wouldn't be able to read me bedtime stories anymore.
Arriving to the house and meeting our dad for the first time was scary. I held Ellie in my arms, and talked to her silently as I stood there outside the cab with wide eyes. The house was huge, and I fell in love with it the second I saw it.
My dad looked tired when he came to greet us. He didn't hug us, he didn't even smile. He just acknowledged us before grabbing our bags. He showed me to my room, and then he gave me a small tour. Ellie was in my arms the whole time, even if my arms were beginning to hurt from holding her. Sure she was pretty light, but I was only eight years old and I had been holding her for a long time.
Ellie didn't cry, and she didn't speak. She didn't even smile when I tried to play with her. She had been like that since mom died, silent and resigned. Just like me.
After feeding Ellie I went outside on our backyard, and was amazed to see that it was so much bigger then our old one. But our old one had had a dog running around, together with me. And it had had my mother pushing Ellie in the baby swing. And Ellie had taken her first steps there.
Now she didn't walk much, so I had to carry her around. She refused to be alone, and she refused to let me leave her. I had to spend every day with her, and not that I didn't love her. But I was eight, and I wanted to be able to play. But I guess somehow, mother dying had forced me to grow up way to fast. I was no longer able to act eight; I had to act much older.
"Maybe we can ask the neighbors if we can swing there Ell, would you like that?" I cooed to my sister as I gazed upon the garden next to ours. The swings and the tire swing looked so welcoming, and I wondered if they had children I could maybe play with. If there was a mother in that family that could help take care of Ellie. I knew it was stupid, so I quickly forgot my thoughts and brought Ellie back inside to read her a story.
[Franks Point of View]
The first I remember after the fire was waking up, and not being able to feel my legs. My eyes shot open, and the bright light blinded me. I knew I was in a hospital because of all the white. But what I didn't know was where Gerard was. "Gerard?" My voice was low and hoarse, and it hurt to talk.
"I'm here baby" Someone next to me said. And through my tired eyes I saw him sitting in a chair next to my bed. His face was pale and tired, but still as beautiful as he was when we met. He had tears in his eyes, and his lower lip trembled. "Oh God Frank"
He broke down, just like that. He fell on top of me and wept. I didn't understand, I mean yeah sure he was probably glad I was okay… but I had only been out for a few hours.
"Gerard, what's wrong?" Again my voice came out much lower then I had intended it to. Gerard didn't answer; instead he held my hands as he cried. Over his shoulder I saw a doctor entering the room carefully. He had a clipboard in his arms and a relieved expression on his face.
He cleared his throat which caused Gerard to sit back in the chair next to my bed, still crying violently. I looked from the doctor to Gerard several times, still not being able to figure out what was wrong.
"You're awake I see" The doctor finally said. I didn't know what to reply so I just nodded slowly. "You've been in a coma" The doctor explained slowly, and then closed in on me. He looked at the different machines I just noticed I was hooked too. Then he wrote a few things in his clipboard before returning his attention to me.
"We didn't think you'd wake up" He said slowly, and I turned to look at Gerard. Now I knew why he was crying, and I couldn't help but feel tears well up in my own eyes. I held my hand out for Gerard, and when he took it I pulled him to sit on the edge of my bed.
"How long was I out?" I asked the doctor, without taking my eyes off Gerard. "Five months"
After another month I was allowed to come home, and I was surprised when I caught sight of the house. It was in perfect condition, and Gerard revealed to me that he had paid a ton of workers to fix it. Apparently the fire had started in the garage, but there were no signs of a crime.
It was hard, but I and Gerard had to accept that it wasn't Riley, and that we still had no proof of who he really was. My body was fine, I had a few scars, but that was it. Gerard was in the same condition, and he had gotten a scar on his forehead. A scar that I loved to trace with my fingers.
"You're not gonna believe this, Riley's got kids!" Gerard said one afternoon. I looked up from Pansy, and stared at him. "What do you mean?" I asked putting Pansy down. Gerard came over and sat on the bed with me. "It was in the paper a few months ago. Apparently their mother died and Riley was their father and only living relative. I gave him a shocked expression and he laughed. "I know, it's weird. I feel so bad for the kids."
Three days later I and Gerard were discussing the next-door kids while getting ready for bed. We had seen the girl walking around in the backyard with her sister in her arms. She always looked so troubled, and sometimes we saw her glancing longingly at the swings on our own backyard.
"Lets think about them later" I sad kissing his cheek and letting my hand rest on his thigh. He gave me a surprised look but then burst out laughing. "Oh, so you want to have sex now?" He asked and I raised my eyebrows. "Well I haven't had sex in like 6 months, can you blame me?" I said shrugging.
Suddenly he pounced on me and pinned me on my back to the bed. "Oh no I can't, and you can't blame me for wanting some either" then he kissed me deeply before I could respond. In a matter of seconds I was kissing him back and pulling my arms so he'd let them go. As soon as he did I let my fingers run through his hair as I opened my mouth to let him in.
We had been kissing for almost ten minutes, and started on each others pants (our shirts were long forgotten on the floor) when we heard a knock on our back door. Gerard groaned and abandoned his spot on top of me but I quickly pulled him back. "Ignore it!" I said sternly and kissed his jaw. At first he looked like he was going to ignore it, but another frantic knock stopped me from kissing his jaw.
Something in the know sounded so desperate. Like someone was in trouble. And neither I nor Gerard could ignore whoever was at our door. We jumped out of bed, pulled on our shirts and tried to fix our clothes the best we could.
When we walked towards the backdoor I looked at the clock and saw that it was 11pm, pretty late for this to be a normal matter. Me and Gerard switched nervous glances, both thinking the same thing. What if it was Riley? However I finally reached the door, and after hesitating a few seconds I opened it.
Outside in the cold October night stood a girl, around eight-ish with a toddler in her arms. She looked tired and scared, and her long brown hair looked messy. The child in her arms was sleeping, and was wrapped in a blue blanket. We recognized her as the girl next door at once, but neither of us reacted. We just stood there staring at her.
After a few minutes it hit me that she must be cold, she was only wearing a t-shirt and a pair of jeans. "What, I mean, how? Why?" I stuttered as Gerard ushered her to walk inside. She gave us a weak smile before stepping into our warm house. "My dad is your neighbor, and he left" She said shifting her weight, not really knowing what to do. I saw that she was struggling with her sister, so I held my arms out towards her. "I can hold her, you look tired" She gave me a suspicious look.
"I babysat my cousins when they were little, I know how to handle kids" I said and gave her a reassuring smile. She finally nodded and gave me the child. Then she rubbed her arms, and me and Gerard knew she must be freezing. "Come here" Gerard said and ushered her towards the living room, where he told her to sit in our couch. She did, and looked curiously around the room before Gerard joined her, sitting on the very far end of the couch.
I sat down in one of our chairs, careful not to wake the sleeping baby in my arms. Gerard asked her to explain herself to us, while he gave her a blanket which she gratefully took and wrapped around her small frame.
"My dad was angry, he was shouting at us so I ran with my sister to hide in the backyard. And then he left. And he locked the doors, and I don't have a key" She said, her voice trembling a bit. "I'm Jenn by the way. And that's Ellie" She said pointing towards the girl in my arms. I wrapped the blanket tighter around Ellie before returning my attention to Jenn. "How old are you?" Gerard asked before I had the chance to. "Eight" she answered quickly. "And Ellie's one" She added when I opened my mouth.
Me and Gerard nodded then looked at each other. I knew what he was thinking, because I was thinking it too. Riley must be a horrible man, who could just abandon his own children this way. However we knew why they lived with him in the first place, and it wasn't because of their choice. Or his.
"Well, do you want to stay here tonight?" Gerard finally asked, and I gave him a loving look. Jenn looked ecstatic and nodded furiously. "Oh you're so nice!" She said before throwing herself on Gerard and hugging him. Gerard, who wasn't used to handling kids hugged her back timidly. I laughed at the expression on his face, but stopped when he glared at me.
"I'll take Ellie to our guestroom and lay her in the bed. Then I'll come down and we can dig something out for you from the freezer… perhaps ice cream" I said and laughed at her smile.
Jenn sure did love to talk, I and Gerard found that out when she talked for almost two hours while we were eating ice cream. She told us about herself, and how she missed not being able to play much since she had to take care of Ellie. She talked about how she missed going to school, since her father had said he wanted to tutor her at home. Of course he didn't he just lay around all day in his sweatpants and drank bear. At that me and Gerard exchanged worried looks, but then turned our attention back to Ellie, who had left the previous subject and was now telling us about how much she loved being outdoors.
"And I saw that you have swings, could I use them sometime? I love swings, we used to have one back home" She said and looked at us with pleading eyes, before yawning. I smiled at her and brushed some hair out of her face. That's when I noticed she had green eyes, which is kind of unusual when you have brown hair. "Let's get you to bed young lady" I said and stood up from my chair.
"I'll clean up while you take her to bed" Gerard offered and I nodded. I took Jenn's hand and she skipped happily next to me towards the stairs. When we got upstairs I first rummaged through mine and Gerard's closet in search of a t-shirt she could use to sleep in. While I was looking her mouth didn't stop moving once, and I swear she was talking both while she was breathing out AND in. I giggled a little when she told me about how she hated her fathers taste in music, and that she'd rather listen to 'awesome' music.
Finally I found a t-shirt that was still too big for her, but it was the smallest one I could fine. It was black and had a skull on it, and she started talking about the skull immediately of course. "Let's skip brushing your teeth tonight since you don't have a toothbrush here" I said and picked her up and blew a raspberry on her exposed shoulder. She giggled and started kicking her legs.
I took her into the same room as her baby sister, and moved the covers away so she could climb in next to Ellie. She did, and I tucked her in while talking to her about different things. Mostly about music, since that was something she seemed to like talking about.
"I don't know your name" She said suddenly, and I realized that I and Gerard never introduced ourselves. "Frank" I said, and pointed towards me. "And Gerard" I finished waving with my hand towards the door, where Gerard had just turned up. "Talking about me ey?" He said and stepped towards the bed, and sat on it, next to me.
Jenn giggled and nodded, before yawning yet again. "Now go to sleep princess, and we'll talk to your dad in the morning okay?" I said stroking her cheek. She nodded slightly and closed her eyes. Then she opened them again and looked at us. "You never said if I could borrow the swings or not" She pointed out and Gerard laughed and ruffled her hair. "Of course you can, anytime" He answered and she nodded, happy with his answer. "Can you sing to me?" She asked suddenly. I looked at Gerard with meaningful eyes and he sighed.
"Of yours, what do you want me to sing?" He asked, and she shrugged. "Anything" She said with her angelic voice. Gerard thought for a moment then laced his fingers together with mine and took a deep breath.
Then he started singing Umbrella by Rihanna and I snorted as I tried to suppress my laughter. Gerard glared at me, but continued singing. And to be honest, it didn't sound bad at all. And it didn't take long before Jenn had fallen asleep, and her breathing evened out.
I kissed her forehead before standing up and leaving the room with Gerard behind me. Out in the hallway he suddenly wrapped his arms around me and embraced me in a bone crushing hug. When he released me I saw tears shining at the corner of his eyes. And I knew exactly how he felt.
It was so unfair, that a beautiful girl like Jenn, and an innocent child like Ellie, should have such a monster as a father.
When I and Gerard finally went to bed, after checking on the children again, we both decided that we had to do something. Call child-services or anything, this couldn't go on anymore. Jenn deserved to have a normal childhood, and she deserved to go to school and learn. And Ellie deserved a real parent, not just her eight year older sister.
"Maybe this happened for a reason" I heard Gerard whisper as he wrapped his arms around me and kissed me goodnight. I thought for a moment before kissing him again, "Maybe" I said. And then we drifted off to sleep, resting in each others arms.
A/N: And Jenn, tell me, how much do you love me now? :*
