Naida was not looking forward to the day at all. She would have to see Brendon, Alex Iero, and Nia and Ray Toro at some point. She was just hoping they wouldn’t ask her about Jon and the baby. It was something that angered her more than made her sad and she was to the point where anger was not her friend.
She finally opened her eyes and looked up at the high ceilings of the cavern and sighed, crawling out of the bed and stripping out of the clothes she had been wearing for the last two weeks. She walked through the pearl curtain and spotted the warm water spring that led straight to the open. She dove into it and felt her tail turn, forcing her to keep going.
She came out of the opening into the open and smiled as she spotted Okeanos laying on the ocean’s bed. She swam up to him and lay on his back, breathing in the scent of the large water serpent’s scales. “Oh, my dearest friend, I have missed you more than the sun misses the sky.”
The serpent moved his head around to look at her and she laughed lightly as his tongue touched her skin, showing her the love she needed at the moment. She kissed him gently on the nose and told him that she had needed him today more than anything because she had to face the world once again.
She stayed with him, just basking in the warm light from the sun through the water, for nearly an hour before saying her farewells and swimming back up to her cavern, crawling along the stone floor into the bathroom where she got a towel to dry her tail off. She caught sight of herself in the mirror on the ceiling and sighed.
Her once flawless body, especially her tail, was ravaged with scars from being kidnapped and tortured for information. The first few times, Jon had managed to save her before she truly broke, but eventually, she had been broken. Jon had always managed to bring her back a little, but she was never truly normal again.
Torture had become second nature to her. She was no longer able to be broken when even the most horrid of torments. Maybe it was why she had been sent back. For them to use her as bait. Ha! She wouldn’t try that again.
She heard the door to her room open and Alex’s voice rang through the cavern. “Naida?”
“I’m in the bathroom, Alex.” She hadn’t wanted anyone to see her like this, but it would help if someone knew to tell the others so she wouldn’t.
He walked into the bathroom and inhaled sharply. “Oh my gods, Naida, what happened?”
“Torment, torture, rape, the normal things that happen when you’re kidnapped. I could only do so much with the damaged before I injured myself further. Now you know why it took me so long to come back.” Naida wouldn’t look at him, she was too busy trying to get her scales dry so that she could have legs to walk around with again.
Alex sat beside her and started to help her dry her fin. “Um, your body was broken, but what about your mind, Nay? Are you okay?”
Naida laughed and that was answer enough. It was the laugh of the mad scientist or the mental patient. The laugh that said the mind that had once been there was gone, never to return. Maybe one day she would be able to have her friends help her, but for now, she was too far gone to even care about it. “Oh, I’m peachy keen, Alex. Why do you ask?”
Alex frowned and started to study her fin carefully, watching as the scales began to disappear and make her legs reappear. Her legs were worse than the fin had been and he flinched at the sight of them. “Oh, baby, I’m so sorry.”
“Sorry about what?”
“This, Jon, the baby, all of it. I should have done something to keep you here.” Alex’s voice held the guilt he now felt that he hadn’t done anything. He had become close to Naida in the last few days before the fight and hadn’t been there to keep her from leaving.
“What could you have done, Alex? You were dead. Or at least, everyone thought you were dead. By the time we found out you were alive, I had been tortured to the point that I couldn’t walk. I was unable to move most of the time. You would have been too late even if you had been able to find us.” Her voice held no emotion, like she had gone through the argument in her head a million times and had only come up with this answer.
“Please, Naida, just say something that shows me that you’re still you.” Alex lifted her chin to make her look into his eyes. He could see the pain deep inside her sky blue eyes, but mostly he saw the insanity that had taken over her in the last few months, both before and after Jon and her son were killed.
“What could I say to make you feel better, Alex? Death has taken all I loved. Spencer, Jon, and my son are all gone to me.” She looked at her feet and a few tears moved down her cheeks. “I would have named him James, after Spencer and Papa.”
Alex saw the tears and knew that there was hope for her, but she had shown no emotion with the loss of Spencer and Jon, only with the unnamed son she had lost so young. “You can have other children, Nay. We can help you have more children.”
Naida laughed and looked Alex up and down, none too subtle in what she was doing. “What are you going to do, Alex? Fuck me? Is that what you want to do? Fuck me until I’m pregnant?”
“If need be, yes.” Alex smiled, letting her know that he was playing, though he had fear in his heart over that look in her eyes. She had lost her mind, lost herself. He wasn’t sure if he would be able to help her come back, but he was hoping he could find something, or someone, to help her. “Come on, Nay. We’re going to get you upstairs.”
“Why? What’s the point in leaving this cavern? I lived here for two years alone and was what I thought was happy. Jon made me realize I was wrong, but seriously? Why not go back to being alone? A recluse? I have nothing or no one to live for. I should just lay here until I die and go to Hell. That’s where people like me go, Alex. Hell. I wonder if it’s nice there.”
Alex helped her stand and took her into the cavern and pulling a white dress out of her wardrobe, helping her put it on. He helped her slip white ballet flats onto her feet and then watched as she stared at her feet for a moment. “Why did you dress me in white? White is the color of innocence. Of someone who has never done anything bad. I’m a bad person, Alex. I shouldn’t be wearing white. I should be wearing red. Like pools of blood on a white floor.”
Alex hid the shudder that ran through his body as he took her arm and helped her out of the cavern and into the elevator, taking her up to Rick’s office. He walked into the room and found Rick, Chloe, Brendon, Ray, Bill, and Nia sitting around in the chairs. They all looked up and smiled as Naida walked into the room, giving her greetings.
“Why should you greet the one that brings death into you midst? I could kill you without lifting a finger. Did you know that?” Naida looked down at her feet again as Alex released her and walked over to Bill. “I didn’t know that, but I can. It’s fun.”
Alex felt the others look at him and shook his head. “She’s been tortured to the point that she’s broken.”
“Who said I was ever fixed? Was it you, Papa? Did you tell him I was fixed?” Naida heard the glass in the door behind her shatter at the accusation and started to shake her head and make tsking noises. “Oooo. Shouldn’t make me angry, shouldn’t do it. Bad things happen when I’m angry.”
Everyone looked horrified as she walked around the room and started to pick up books off the desk and throw them onto the floor. She would let the book fall open and start mumbling on the subject that it opened up to, scaring everyone with the meaning behind her words. “Vampires … poor things don’t last that long. Pours from their ears it does. Faeries … crushed, broken. Lycanthropes … aggressive, but weak, so weak. It comes from their eyes. Pops them right out!”
Rick stood quickly as the book opened onto humans and the accursed. “Naida, baby, I think you should go downstairs and get some rest. You’ve had a long couple of days.”
Naida looked at Rick through a curtain of her white blonde hair and tilted her head to the side. “What’s wrong, Papa? Don’t you want to know how your kind dies? Don’t you want to know that they go screaming my name? Begging me to end it? They explode. Pow!” She opened her hand as if it were an explosion and laughed, maniacally.
She grew quiet and turned scared eyes to the group. “Help me.” She felt the power well in her and fought it, not wanting to hurt those she knew cared for her. She fell to the floor and screamed until the power stopped, leaving her unmoving on the floor. Her eyes were open, but there was no one home.
Rick took the initiative to grabbed the phone and call for help. “Bring me two of the biggest guys you have. We need to transport someone to the padded cells in the basement. Preferably the ones for water based creatures.”
He hung up and went to Naida, checking her vitals before looking up at the others. “So, Nia, Ray, do you believe me now?”
Nia nodded, clinging to Ray. “I believe you now, Rick. What happened to her?”
Alex walked over to her and lifted up enough of the white dress for them to see her legs and the deep scars there. “The rest of her body is almost as bad. She went through a lot. I think her and Jon both might have in the last year. He never did sound the same on the phone the few times he called in to give us updates.”
Everyone nodded in agreement as the two guys came into the room to get Naida. They touched her and she screamed, backing away from them and into Brendon’s legs. “Don’t touch me! Don’t touch me! Bad things happen when people touch me!”
Brendon, not knowing what to do, placed a hand gently on Naida’s head. She jumped and looked back at him, relaxing when she realized it was just him. “It’s alright, Naida. These men won’t hurt you. They’re just taking you downstairs for some rest.”
“Rest? I like rest.” Naida laid her head on Brendon’s lap and yawned. “Rest is … good.” She lost consciousness and only Brendon’s hands around her kept her up enough for the two gentlemen to take her downstairs to the containment areas.
