Gabriel stared at the woman before him. He had never seen her in this way before; her usually perfectly styled blonde hair hung loose around her shoulders as she stood before him in her dressing gown. This was odd. Gabriel had never been in that room before, and he did not remember how he had gotten there to begin with.
“I don’t understand,” she whispered, scrutinizing his face. He couldn’t tell what she was thinking, yet he knew that it was something highly improper for a woman of her position. The entire scene was improper, to be sure. No gentleman in his right mind would every approach a young woman in her own bedroom, and especially not while she was still in the process of dressing for the day.
“What do you not understand?” he asked, a bit confused. “I am in love with you, Lily. I have been since the day I met you.” She smiled slightly at the mention of love.
“Love is an abstract principle. You can not touch it, hold it. It is not something to freely be give, Gabriel,” she replied. The sound of her voice pronouncing his name was almost enough to take his breath away. She had never called him by his given name before. “You seem shocked.”
“Is it proper to be calling each other by our given names?” he asked.
“Is anything we are doing to be considered proper?” she asked in response. She smiled. “Gabriel, whatever happens in this room does not matter outside. We can never speak of this encounter again, you do understand that?”
“Of course. We have already broken too many rules of polite society. To speak of this again would condemn us to being outcasts for the rest of our days. It would cause a scandal, not because of what we have done, but because of what everyone will suppose that we have done,” Gabriel replied. He moved over to her, a hand reaching up to gently caress her cheek. She closed her eyes and leaned into the touch, willing for it to be more. “You have consumed my thoughts, Lily. I can not sleep for dreaming of you.”
“Kiss me,” she whispered, looking into his eyes. He leaned in and obliged her, gently pressing his lips to her own. She pushed her lips harder into his own before pulling away and looking into his eyes. “That was inappropriate. I apologize,” she said, pulling away slightly. Gabriel pulled her closer, wrapping an arm around her waist to hold her near as he leaned over and kissed her again.
When he finally pulled away again, she took his hand and led him over to the bed. She pulled off her dressing gown, leaving her only in the thin shift she wore to sleep in. Gabriel reached out and pushed her hair out of her face as she moved to sit on the bed. He moved closer again, leaning in to kiss her as she pulled his ascot loose. She took it off and dropped it into the floor before starting in on the buttons of his vest. He kicked off his own shoes as they kissed, before beginning to help her with the buttons. Once the vest was removed, she began to work at the buttons of his pants.
“We should not be doing this,” he whispered, pulling away from the kiss for a moment. He looked into Lily’s eyes as they sat there.
“There are many things we should not do, Gabriel,” she replied, before continuing to deal with the buttons at his waist. “We are already far beyond the limits of what is polite, and we might as well continue with what everyone will expect has happened between the two of us.”
Gabriel did not respond, but instead moved onto the bed with Lily, positioning himself so that he was lying next to her in the bed as they kissed. She pulled his shirt out of the waist of his pants and pushed his pants down so that he could simply kick them off. Then Gabriel reached down, pulling them hem of her gown up so that he could touch her bare skin. His hand gently grazed her side as he moved the fabric up her body, finally pulling the offending piece of material over her head. He pulled away from her for a moment to dispose of his own shirt before leaning over her and kissing her even more passionately than before. His free hand roamed over her body, caressing as much of her bare skin as he could possibly reach.
“You are beautiful,” he whispered, leaning over to kiss the side of her neck and trailing soft kisses down her collarbone. He then moved so that he could kiss her again, his free hand traveling to her breasts. He gently caressed the skin there as he kissed her.
“Please,” she whispered, looking up into his eyes as she spoke. He nodded slightly before returning to kissing her. As they kissed, he gently spread her legs apart with his free hand, his fingers playing across the bare skin. Before he did anything else, he pulled away and admired her pale skin and the bright flush that had crept into her face, most likely from a lack of oxygen. “Please,” she repeated after a moment. She didn’t want to wait for him any longer.
“Are you sure?” he asked, still a bit concerned over the fact that this was highly inappropriate.
“Please,” she repeated yet again. It was the only word she could bring her self to say. At that, Gabriel nodded and pressed his mouth to hers before positioning himself at her opening. He thrust gently, causing her to moan slightly in pain. It was a new sensation for her, to be sure. After a moment, he began to thrust into her in a slow rhythm, speeding up as he went along. He pulled his mouth away from hers so that he could hear her moans of pleasure.
Gabriel sat up in his bed, breathing heavily. The dream… it had been almost too real. He could feel her smooth skin beneath his fingers, the heat of her breath on his neck. He wished that it had been real… wished that he could have her.

Lily looked down at the various hats displayed in the milliner’s window with a sigh. Elizabeth had run off to see Victoria and her cousin, Moira Finch, most likely to tell them that she was engaged to be married to Ryland. That seemed to be all she was doing lately – telling the world of her impending marriage. It was quickly becoming annoying to hear her going on about the wedding preparations; that seemed to be the only thing anyone within their acquaintance seemed to care about.
“Miss Fletcher?” a voice asked. Lily turned towards the sound, smiling and curtseying at the sight of Gabriel bowing to her. “I hope I did not disturb you, Miss Fletcher, but I could not help but notice that you were alone and I thought that you might enjoy some company,” he said.
“Company would be lovely,” she replied, smiling at him as he held out an arm for her to take. She slipped her hand into his arm as they began to walk down the street. “I don’t suppose that Mr. Blackinton has been as obsessed with all of this wedding business as my dear sister,” she commented. Gabriel smiled at the comment.
“So far he has only spoken to me about staying here with him in London until the wedding,” he replied. “Although I did just receive word that one of my cousins will be coming to London from Spain in a few days time on business, and we will be traveling to my father’s house in Derbyshire for a few days so that he might visit with my parents.”
“So you will be leaving the city for a while?” Lily asked, trying to sound uninterested in the fact, as though the fact truly meant nothing to her other than a constriction of her social circle.
“For a week or so, unfortunately. But my cousin and I shall both be back in plenty of time for the wedding, I assure you,” he replied.
“I had no doubt that you would return in time for the wedding, seeing as you are one of Mr. Blackinton’s closest friends. You said that your cousin is coming from Spain?” she asked, more than just a little bit curious about his family.
“Yes. His father began a business importing sugar from the plantations in the Caribbean many years ago, with my father. When my uncle passed away a few years ago, my cousin took his father’s place within the business,” Gabriel replied. “This will be his first visit to England since he finished school, and I believe that he will be looking for a suitable bride. His mother is against the idea of his marrying a Spanish woman.”
“But he is a Spanish gentleman. Why should she not want him to marry a woman that he has grown up with?” Lily asked, a bit confused.
“His mother is an Englishwoman. She does not see the young ladies of Madrid as being equal to her son’s position as a wealthy businessman,” Gabriel explained.
“That is a bit condescending, don’t you think?” Lily asked, hoping she would not offend him with her words. Gabriel smiled at her words, and Lily breathed a sigh of relief.
“Condescending, yes. But that is Mrs. Suarez’s way, unfortunately. I am afraid that she does not understand the meaning of love. Hers was an arranged marriage, and she believes that love grows with time,” Gabriel explained.
“That is a shame. A marriage not based on love is a sad thing, to be sure,” she replied.
“It is, to be sure. I do not think that I could marry a woman that I did not love,” he commented.
“Nor could I marry a gentleman unless I was in love with him,” Lily replied. She turned to look at his face as they spoke, wondering what was on his mind.
“Do you believe in love at first sight, Miss Fletcher?” he asked.
“Beg pardon?” she replied, unsure of what exactly he meant by that particular question.
“I apologize, perhaps that was an improper question,” he replied, suddenly seeming more than just a little uptight.
“It was not improper… it was just an unexpected question,” she replied. “I don’t know that I could say whether or not such a phenomenon exists. True love can not be at first sight, because true love is dependent upon more than just appearances.”
“But do you believe that true love can grow from the type of love that occurs when two people meet for the first time?” he asked.
“Mr. Saporta, may I inquire as to the reason behind all of these questions?” she asked. Lily did not want to answer such questions without understanding exactly what he meant.
“Merely curiosity, Miss Fletcher. I simply wish to know what a woman would say on the subject,” he replied. Lily felt quite sure that he was, in his own way, evading the question.
“In that case, I suppose it is quite possible that true love could come from such a beginning as love at first sight,” Lily replied, a soft smile on her face. She was not quite sure what to make of the conversation, so she simply shut her mouth.
“I had hoped you would agree with me,” he said. After a moment, he added, “I had hoped that I was not more of a hopeless romantic than most women.”
“But you forget, I am not like most women, Mr. Saporta,” she replied. “Most young women would have been too shy or accommodating to voice their true opinion on such a question. Especially with a gentleman she had so recently become acquainted with.”
“Then, I suppose, I am lucky that I did not choose to ask such a young woman,” Gabriel replied, “for I wished to have a woman’s true opinion on the matter.” Lily smiled at his words.
“I am honored that my opinion would hold so much weight in your mind,” she replied.
“A woman’s thoughts are worth no less than a man’s, provided there is an equal degree of education,” he replied.
“You know little of my education, and far less of what I was educated in, yet you still feel that I am educated,” she commented.
“Your words and expressions show that you are educated, Miss Fletcher. Anyone who speaks to you will see that,” he replied.
“Once again, you flatter me, Mr. Saporta. Your description of me seems better suited for another woman, one who has actually had a formal education,” she replied. “I have had very little. What I know has mainly come from the books I have read. Our governess left us when I was only ten, and my mother chose to allow us to continue our education as we saw fit.”
“Whether your education was with a governess or through your own merits, it is quite an accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have accomplished,” he replied, leaving her standing at the foot of the stairs leading up to her door.
