Chapter Three: Spreading the Word

“How about Corbin?”
“Huh?” I looked up from the bowl of cereal I was eating at our kitchen island. “What’s Corbin?”
Chris laughed. “Not what. Who. I was searching the channels and fell upon the Disney channel just as Corbin Bleu’s new video started.” He motioned towards the television where some guy who looked to be in his mid-twenties was singing and dancing while playing basketball. “I kind of like that name, Corbin, and it starts with a C.”
“For our boy?” I shook my head. “No. I don’t like it too much. Besides, I don’t want to name our son after someone off the Disney channel. What kind of name is Corbin Bleu anyway? That poor kid probably got taunted in school. What? Did his parents love cordon bleu that much?”
Chris smirked, and turned off the television. He got up from where he had been sitting on the couch, and walked over to me to wrap his arms around me from behind. “I guess he should be grateful his first name wasn’t chicken and his middle name Cordon or Corbin.” He kissed he side of my neck.
I laughed. “You’re such a dork.”
He grinned, and sat down next to me. “Look who’s talking, geek.”
I laughed. “You’re the one who sang ‘Geek in the Pink’ on the show; not me.”
“But I thought of you when I sang it.”
“I never wear pink,” I insisted, holding my head up high.
Chris gave me a look. “Right.”
“What? I never do.”
“If you say so. Now come on. Finish your cereal, and let’s go pick out our girl’s middle name, and our boy’s full name.” Chris nodded towards our computer.
“We are only adopting one,” I said, getting off the stool, and rinsing my dish in the sink.
“I know, but we need to have names for both since we don’t know what we’re adopting yet.” He got up and headed over to the computer. I saw that he already had a baby names site up and ready.
I grabbed a chair, and pulled it over next to Chris’ in front of the computer. “Let me pick our girl’s middle name first.”
He nodded. “All right. Hold on just a sec…” He clicked on the “girls names only” section, and then we read down the list of names.
We read through pages and pages of names, and I couldn't really find one I liked.
“There’s nothing that really sounds good with Bliss, and anything that might work, I don’t like the meaning of,” I said.
“Does the meaning really matter?” Chris asked.
I nodded. “I like Bailey, but come on. “Bailiff? Who wants to have a name that means bailiff?”
“Who’s going to know what it means?” Chris protested.
“We will. I’m sure someone else will know,” I said.
Chris sighed and rolled his eyes. “All right, all right. Let’s move on to the boy name. We can always go back to the girl name.”
I nodded, and Chris switched over to the “boy names only” section. He clicked on the C section, and we began to read through the names.
“These are even worse! Cable? Cache? Cactus? Are these people for real?” I couldn’t believe anyone would ever consider naming their kid one of those names.
“They’re not all bad,” Chris insisted, switching to the next page. “Look. How about Carson? That’s cute.”
“And have people compare him to Carson Daly? I think not.”
“Well, how about Cassidy? That’s cute too.”
I shook my head. “It sounds too girly.”
“It’s a gender-neutral name.”
“It still sounds too girly.”
“You’re not into picking out a name, are you?” Chris looked frustrated.
I smiled, and got up out of my chair to sit in his lap. “I am, it’s just… I think it’s going to have to come to us, you know? Some parents don’t even pick out a name until the baby is born. I think a name should just happen, you know?”
He sighed. “Why do I get the feeling that is just an excuse for getting out of picking out a name? You do still want to adopt a baby, don’t you?”
I nuzzled my cheek up against his. “Of course I do, Richie. But come on. We have a while yet. We haven’t even looked into adopting yet. Let’s just concentrate on our trip to Hawaii, and when we get back, I promise you, we will pick out the names.”
This seemed to satisfy him. He sighed gently, and then held my chin up so that he could kiss my lips.
I gladly kissed him back.
“All right. But as soon as we get back…” He trailed off.
“As soon as we get back, we’ll look into adopting and picking out a name,” I assured him.
He grinned, and then we kissed again.
He nodded towards the bathroom. “Wanna go take a shower, and then see a movie or something?”
I grinned. “As long as you’ll be in that shower with me.”
“Mm, of course I’m gonna be.”
“Well, then what are we just sitting around here for? Let’s go!” I said, getting out of the chair and extending my hand to him.
He laughed, and took my hand. He then got up and we both headed to take our shower and get in our morning fix if you know what I mean…

Soon, it was a day before we were to leave for Hawaii. We still had one last piece of business to take care of before we left. Ryan Seacrest had called us a few days before, and said that people had been asking him for an interview with both Blake and me together. Blake and I agreed to it, since Ryan was a good friend of ours, and we knew we could trust him not to take things out of hand like a lot of journalists and or radio DJs would do when given an opportunity to interview us. Blake and I decided to just fly out to LA to do the interview the night before we were to leave for Hawaii. Blake had gotten our airline tickets switched over so that we would be departing from LAX instead of the Seattle-Tacoma airport. We would stay at a hotel that night, and fly out to Hawaii early the next morning.
So, the day before we were to leave for Hawaii, Blake and I found ourselves sitting in the radio station with Ryan beside us.
“Thank you guys for agreeing to do this interview. You guys are so poplar. Do you know you two re two of the most requested people that people want me to interview?” Ryan asked us.
“Really? That’s cool. I don’t know why though. We’re pretty boring,” Blake said.
“Yeah. Plus, it has been five years since we’ve been on the show. You would think we’d be considered has beens by now,” I joked.
“You two met on American Idol and fell in love, and now you’re happily married to each other. Not to mention the fact that you’re both guys. Trust me; it shouldn’t be any surprise that you two are popular,” Ryan replied.
Blake and I just smiled at each other. I knew we both felt the same. We didn’t feel like it was any big deal. We were just a couple like any other couple. We just happened to both be the same sex is all. Why that was such a big deal, I had no idea.
“Okay, we’re on air in ten seconds. Are you guys ready?” Ryan asked us.
“We kind of have to be now, right?” Blake asked.
He laughed, and then nodded. “Right!”
And so, ten seconds later, it began.
“You’ve been asking for it, and now I’ve brought it. I have for you in the studio today Blake and Chris Lewison from season six American Idol. Yes, that’s right, I have them together, just as you requested. Say hello, guys.”
“Hey, what’s up, guys, this is Chris Rich. How are you all?” I said, leaning towards the mic.
“Hey, what up? This is bshorty in the house! Holla at me!”
I nearly died as Blake said that. Don’t get me wrong. I love my husband to death, but sometimes he can be such a dork! I guess that is one of the things that made me fall in love with him though.
“So, how has married life been? You two just celebrated you two year anniversary a couple days ago, didn’t you? How was that?” Ryan asked.
Blake and I grinned at each other.
“It was great. I can hardly believe we’ve been married for two years,” I said.
Blake nodded. “The sex is still great, in case y’all are wondering. In fact, it’s gotten better with age. I guess its kind of like a good wine,” Blake quipped.
“Blake!” I gasped.
He grinned. “What? Everyone knows we have sex now.”
I blushed, and shook my head. “If you had told me five years ago that Blake would be this open about our relationship, I would have laughed in your face.
“Wow, you’ve definitely grown more open since five years ago. Really though. Time flies. I remember brining you two to the front before Chris’ elimination on the show. It doesn’t seem that long ago. And as for your wedding, well it seems like just last week I was watching you two get married on that boat.” Ryan said.
“Yeah, I know. Time flies, but Blake and I are enjoying every moment of it,” I said. I gently squeezed Blake’s hand.
“We sure are,” Blake said, turning to smile at me.
“So, if you don’t mind me asking, what did you do on your anniversary? What did you get each other? Or is it too risque for public radio?” Ryan joked.
I laughed. “No, it’s not too risque. At least not the first part. Ha! We went out to my favorite restaurant,” I began. I then proceeded to tell about all the surprises Blake had left me before heading to the restaurant.
Blake told of what I got him, leaving out the wanting to have a baby part of course.
“And Blake got me two tickets to go somewhere for a second honeymoon. I’m not going to say where for privacy reasons, but it’s somewhere really nice,” I said.
“Somewhere that is going to get him a lot of sex from you?” Ryan joked.
I blushed.
Blake laughed. “It better after what I spent on the trip!”
I still wasn’t totally comfortable with being open about Blake’s and my relationship, but I figured since they were all having fun, I might as well too. “It’s a second honeymoon for us. Of course he’s going to get some.”
We were all laughing by now, though I don’t know why. It wasn’t that funny.
“All right, all right. Next question. Do you two think you’ll ever adopt a baby?” Ryan asked.
Blake and I cast a glance at each other. To tell or not to tell? That was the question.

I normally would want to keep something like adopting a child private, but with the media, it was never kept quiet. I was beginning to think that telling Ryan would be the way to go. People were going to find out anyway, and I would rather they found out by a friend of ours instead of some jerk who just wanted a good story, and who would likely twist things around to a soap opera style story. I turned to Chris. “What do you think?” I asked in a low voice.
“I think we should cut to commercial,” Chris said.
Ryan laughed. “Well, we are do for a song. All right. Here is an oldie but a goodie. Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”. We’ll be back with more from Blake and Chris Lewison right after this song.” He played the song, then turned to us. “I’m sorry. Was I not supposed to ask that? When we come back, we can pretend like I never asked it.”
“The truth is, we had just decided on our anniversary that we want to adopt a baby. We haven’t told our friends and family yet. I don’t know if I want the first place for them to hear it to be on the radio,” Chris told Ryan.
I hadn’t thought of that. “I just think that now that it has been brought up especially, people are going to find out. If we don’t answer now, people will take it as we are adopting. I’d rather be the ones to tell everyone before some tabloid starts making up stories that one of us is having a baby with some woman, and you and I are going to raise it together, but she'll have full custody since it’s harder for gays to adopt. We just get visitation rights or something,” I said.
“You should write for the tabloids,” Ryan joked.
“You have a point, and I would like the announcement to be on Ryan’s show, since he is the only DJ we can fully trust. I don't know. Maybe we should just announce it. Ryan already mentioned it anyway. Like you said, it will look suspicious if we just drop it,” Chris agreed.
“I’m sorry guys. I shouldn’t have asked you that,” Ryan stated.
“It’s all right. You didn’t mean anything buy it,” Chris said.
“Maybe our parents won’t even be listening. We can call them as soon as the interview is over,” I suggested.
Chris nodded.
“All right. Are you guys sure about this?” Ryan asked.
Chris and I looked at each other. The song was coming to the end, and we knew that there would be no turning back once we gave Ryan the okay.
“Let’s do this,” I said,
Chris nodded.
“All right,” Ryan agreed.
The song ended, and we were back on air.
“All right, we’re back with Blake and Chris Lewison. Now, before the break, I asked them if they were going to adopt anytime soon. They are about to answer that question right now. Take it, boys.”
I grabbed Chris’ hand and spoke first. “Yes. Actually, on our anniversary, we first talked about adopting a baby. Chris brought it up to me, and after a little convincing, I decided that that is what I wanted too.”
“He was a little worried he wouldn’t be a good parent, but I’ve seen him with Phil Stacey’s kids, and know that he is going to be a great father,” Chris said.
“So will Chris,” I responded. “He is amazing with those kids. Our kid is going to be lucky to have him as a father.”
“So, what made you think you wouldn’t be a good father?” Ryan asked.
“I don’t know. I don’t have too much experience with kids. I was afraid I’d mess it up somehow, or that we're doing the wrong thing by bringing a kid into a same-sex parent situation,” I answered.
“Well, I’m sure you two are both going to be wonderful fathers. If you ask me, the kid will be gifted to not only have one, but to daddies that love him or her unconditionally,” Ryan said.
Chris and I both smiled at him, and then said, “Thank you” in unison.
“So, do you guys want a girl or a boy?” Ryan asked next.
“Well, I want a boy, but Chris wants a girl,” I replied.
“But we both would be happy with either,” Chris chimed in.
“Yes, we would,” I agreed.
“Any names picked out?” Ryan asked next.
“We picked our girl’s first name out, but we kind of want to keep it to ourselves for now,” Chris said.
“Yeah. We don’t want it being all over the media,” I added.
“I can understand that. So, lets get on the subject of your careers. You just finished a ‘cake tour’ as the fans call it. What is next on the agenda?” Ryan asked.
“We’re taking a slight break now, to both relax, and to adopt our baby, but eventually, I’d like to put out a new album,” I said.
“I think it would be cool to put out a cake album,” Chris stated.
I smirked at him. “That’s news to me. Not that that is a bad idea. I’d love to do an album with you.”
“Wow, I bet a cake album will outsell all of your solo records combined,” Ryan said to us.
“I’m sure it will,” I agreed.
“Well, that is all the time we have, but you guys, I want to thank you for agreeing to do this interview, and thank you for letting me be the first to get the inside coop on your adopting a baby,” Ryan said. “I know you two are going to be great parents. That is going to be one lucky kid.”
“Thank you,” Chris and I both said with a nod.
Chris and I said our goodbyes to the radio listeners, and then Ryan switched to a commercial.
Chris and I stood up, and when Ryan followed suit, we shook hands with him.
“Have a fun trip, where ever it might be,” Ryan said.
“We’re going to Hawaii, but we didn’t tell you that,” I said.
Ryan laughed, and pretended to zip his lips. “My lips are sealed. So, can you tell your old friend what you’re going to be naming the girl if you decide to adopt a girl?”
Chris grinned. “Bliss. Part Blake, part Chris.”
“Aw, that’s cute! I like that a lot. Well, good luck. You two deserve all the happiness you can get.”
“Thanks man,” I said, giving Ryan a hug, and patting his back.
“Thanks,” Chris said, following suit after Ryan and I finished hugging.
“Don’t mention it. Bring me back a Hawaiian shirt,” Ryan called after us.
“Done!” I said with a final wave as Chris and headed down the hall. I didn’t even look back, but something told me Ryan was smiling and shaking his head while going back into the room. I could see it in my head.

“We heard on the radio. Congratulations! I’m really looking forward to having another grandchild,” my father said. Blake and I had called my parents first on my cell phone, having put it on speaker.
“You could have told us before you told everyone else you know,” my mom said, though she didn't sound angry one bit.
“We know. We’re sorry. Ryan just brought it up, and we knew people would know even if we ignored the question,” I said.
“It's all right. We’re not angry. I’m jut so happy I’m going to be a grandma again! What’s the name you have picked out for the girl?”
I smiled. “Bliss. Part Blake, part Chris.”
“That’s an adorable name!” my mom said.
“It sure is,” my father agreed. “When are you two going to look into adopting?”
“When we get back from Hawaii. I know we’re probably going to be put on a waiting list. We might not be able to get a baby. The babies have the longest wait I’m sure,” I said. “We might have to settle for a toddler.”
“Well, I’m sure with you two being celebrities and all, you might get some pull. Now you two will have something to look forward to now when you get back from Hawaii,” my dad said.
“I don’t want to be unfair to someone else. If they are first on the list, I’m not going to use my status to take their baby way,” I said.
“We raised you right. I’m so proud of you,” my mom said.
“Me too,” my father stated.
“Well, we have to call Blake’s parents now. I love you both, and I’ll see you when we get back.”
“All right. Have a fun trip! We love you both too,” my mom said. “By, Blake!”
Blake smiled. “Bye, Phyllis!” We had decided he would call my parents by their first names, and I would call his parents by their first names. It was too creepy calling each other’s parents mom and dad. It made us feel like brothers instead of husbands.
“Bye, you two. Have fun. I love you guys always,” my dad said.
“Bye! We love you too,” Blake called out.
“Love you. Bye,” I said.
I clicked off the phone.
“Well, that went well. I know my parents are going to be ecstatic. With me being an only child and marrying a man, I bet they thought they’d never get a grandchild,” Blake said.
I laughed. “You make this call.” I winked at him.
He smiled, and took my phone. He put it on speaker again, and then dialed his parents’ number.
His father picked up. “Hello?”
“Dad, it’s me and Chris. Did you and mom listen to our interview on Ryan Seacrest today?”
“No, we didn’t even know you were going to be on it. We would have liked to have heard. You should have told it was going to be on. How did it go?” Dallas asked.
“Can you get mom on the other phone? We have a surprise for you guys,” Blake said, ignoring his father’s question.
“Really? What is it?” Dallas asked.
I rolled my eyes. Now I knew where Blake got it from.
“Get mom, and we’ll tell you,” Blake ordered.
A moment later, Dinah was on the phone. “Hey, honey. What’s this surprise your father tells me you guys have?”
“Well, Chris and I have decided to adopt a baby. We’re not sure if we want a girl or a boy yet, but, as soon as we get back from Hawaii, we want to look into adopting,” Blake told her.
There was a brief silence on the other end.
Dallas broke the silence. “All right, who knocked whom up?”
For a split second Blake and I were rendered speechless, then, when Dallas started laughing, we did too.
“You guys are strange,” Dinah said. Then her tone was ecstatic. “I’m actually going to be grandma! Do you know how happy you two just made me with this news?”
“I’m happy to be a granddaddy too. I can hardly wait! I am so happy for you guys. You have no idea,” Dallas said.
“Me too. I can hardly wait to hold my grandson or granddaughter in my arms!” Dinah said.
“It’s going to be work, adopting a baby as a same-sex couple, but I know you guys can make it work,” Dallas said.
“We know we can too,” Blake said with a grin.
We talked to his parents a little bit more, then we said our goodbyes and they told us to have a safe trip.
When Blake hung up the phone, he set the phone on the coffee table, and held me in his arms. “I’m glad they are happy for us.”
I kissed him. “Me too.”
“Did you really mean it about doing an album together after our break?” He asked, looking up at me.
I smiled. “Yes, I did. Would it be something you’d be interested in?”
“You bet I would! I know it will sell a lot. But as for now, you know what else I’m interested in?”
I grinned. “What’s that?”
“You in our bed, naked with me. Me making love to you.” He began to kiss down the side of my neck.
“I closed my eyes. “Then what are we standing here for?” I asked, giving a similar line to his from earlier that morning.
“Good question!” He said, taking my hand and leading me to the bedroom.
I grinned, and let him lead me. The day was turning out to be a really good day, and I knew it was only going to get better from there.
